Show Boat

Twelfth Night

Wednesday 10 June, 2.30pm

Presented by The Lord Chamberlain’s Men

Captured live from the great stage of the San Francisco Opera House and broadcasting to Broxbourne Civic Hall

Wednesday 24 June from 7.30pm (picnic from 6.30pm)

Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II’s Show Boat, a true classic of American musical theatre, sails into Broxbourne Civic Hall for one day only.

The Lord Chamberlain’s Men is an open air theatre company built upon the same principles that Shakespeare himself followed: to present bold, clear and dynamic productions that excite and engage the audience. With its fill of jesters, shipwrecks, mistaken identities and cross-dressing Twelfth Night follows Viola as she tries to win the man she loves (while dressed as a man) and find her lost twin.

Based on the novel by Edna Ferber, this tale of life on the Mississippi from the 1880s to the 1920s, is both a poignant love story and a powerful reminder of the bitter legacy of racism. The magnificent Jerome Kern-Oscar Hammerstein II score, which includes such classic songs as Ol’ Man River, Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man, Make Believe and You Are Love, sound glorious.

Othello is the greatest general of his age. A fearsome warrior, loving husband and revered defender of Venice against its enemies. But he is also an outsider whose victories have created enemies of his own, men driven by prejudice and jealousy to destroy him. As they plot in the shadows, Othello realises too late that the greatest danger lies not in the hatred of others, but his own fragile and destructive pride. After more than a decade working in film and television on projects from Star Wars to Holby City, Hugh Quarshie returns to the RSC to play Shakespeare’s Othello. He was last seen with us in Faust and Julius Caesar (1996). Hugh will play opposite Lucian Msamati in the role of Iago, returning to the RSC following his role as Pericles in 2006. Comedy Club 4 Kids

Wednesday 2 September, 1pm & 4pm Thursday 3 September, 1pm & 4pm

Broxbourne Civic Hall

Broxbourne Civic Hall “Somewhere, hidden amongst the thorny brambles is a little kingdom where everyone is very very small...” From the makers of Peppa Pig comes this BAFTA award-winning television animation live on stage! Ben and Holly have fun and games helping Gaston the Ladybird clean up his messy cave, they go on a trip into The Big World with tooth-fairy Nanny Plum, even plan a surprise birthday party for King Thistle, and oops, let’s hope there’s not another jelly flood! Join Ben and Holly, and their friends on this exciting musical adventure packed full of games, songs and laughter on an enchanting journey through the Magical Kingdom. With actors, masks and colourful costumes this beautiful story of elves, princesses and childhood innocence will delight all the family.

Sunday 13 September, 2.30pm – 3.30pm Since 2005, the Comedy Club 4 Kids has been getting the best stand-ups and sketch acts from the international circuit to do their thing for an audience of children (aged 6+) and their families… but without the rude bits! A decade later, the company has expanded from one London residency to being countrywide, running shows and workshops all over the UK from Peebles to Portsmouth, even producing a book on how to write and perform stand-up. The show is family friendly, but without any patronising idiocy. In fact, it’s just like a normal comedy club, but it’s on in the day, kids are allowed in, and thus there is a higher than usual chance of heckles like “why is that your face!?” “A highlight for children in recent years, giving them a taste of some of the biggest names in comedy... with the fun, rowdy feel of a real comedy club” - The Guardian “The ethos is just right” - The Daily Telegraph “The perfect way to entertain the whole family.” - Three Weeks
