Advance Camp is a day camp held every month for fatherless young men (6th-12th grade.)
We teach them things their dad could/should/ would have taught him if he was involved in his life.
In addition to building a strong foundation through these practical skills, the dedicated mentors help teach them how to be rooted and established in Christ.
Advance Camp is completely free to the young men that attend and their families thanks to generous donors.
If you are interested in getting involved with Advance Camp, would like to have your son attend, or would be willing to give financially, please check out of website and send us a note via the Contact Us page.

BY PEGGY PURSER FREEMAN BY PEGGY PURSER FREEMAN CONNIE LEWIS LEONARDThroughout the last several years this town and this community have bound together to endure. When you could have hunkered down and shut out the world, instead, you chose to open new stores, reinvest in community spaces, look towards the future and create bright horizons. You chose to create something you were proud of… and it shows!
The future is bright for Comanche County and each and every individual in this area should be proud of the town you are.
Inside these pages, my hope is that you would feel that pride, that you would read story after story about what YOUR community, your town, your people are doing. My hope is that you would be encouraged to keep going, to keep pursuing those dreams and goals, that you would endure the ups and downs and that you would lean on one another. Comanche County is stronger together, as you have proven time and time again, and you’re just getting started!

The programs and events have had to change a bit over the last year, however these are creative ladies.
Comanche Public Library (CPL) lost one of its best resources last year—Ms. Hollis McCright. After spending seven years as director, updating the collection, and overseeing a huge remodel, Ms. Hollis retired, leaving a legacy that blessed the community. Deborah Hanson became the director. Her knowledge and life experience, along with her staff, stepped up to meet the needs of the public library.
Since June of this year, Deborah Hanson has served as director for the CPL. Hired in May of 2020
as a library assistant, Ms. Deborah shared with me her assessments and plans as director.
“It was a privilege to work under Hollis McCright’s directorship and I’m excited for the opportunity I have been given to carry on the legacy of our library. Both librarians before me accomplished such amazing things here, I can only build on their huge accomplishments, which have set me on a path for success.”
As the director, Ms. Deborah is excited about future plans. “At this time, we are adding the final touches to a pocket park. It’s quite lovely, creatingspaces outdoors for any outdoor events. Also, we are working to create our Young Adult section.
Our plan is to create an area that is visibly enticing to young adults. Due to space issues, it will be small, but a space where teens can study, game, or just retreat with a good book.”
Ms. Deborah lived in a number of cities in various states, before moving to Comanche. Most recently she lived in the Houston area.
“I’m definitely a "newbie" to Comanche County since I moved here in September of 2016. However, I already love the close community here. It's like one big family. Taylor and Tammy have been wonderful additions to our staff. They are both friendly and ready to meet the reading and resources needs of the community. We all enjoy our daily interactions with wonderful patrons.”
In November of last year, Tammy Boswell joined the CPL staff. Before Comanche, Ms. Tammy lived in Midland and then Lake Brownwood where she met her new husband. “Even though I recently moved to the area, I feel at home. My husband, Joey Boswell, has been the County Auditor since 1986.” Tammy primarily coordinates the Inter-library Loan requests and the Adult Fiction and Non-Fiction sections. Her personal favorite books are mysteries by authors John Grisham and Clive Cussler. If you need help with genealogy reference questions, Ms. Tammy is your go-to person.
Taylor Fritts came to the library at the end of June this year. Taylor jumped right into the middle of all CPL projects. She brings a much-needed tech-savvy addition to the staff and a huge benefit for the community.
“I primarily handle the Children's, Juvenile, and Young Adult sections, plus technology reference questions,” Taylor said. “My go-to books include for the young ones, books like If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, and of course , Splat the Cat. In the juvenile section, I like Spiderwick Chronicles and the Dear America series. For young adults, we are currently working on expanding this collection, including Divergent Series, City of Bones, and Shadow of Bones Netflix series.”
If you want any suggestions on your next read or need help with research, Tammy and Taylor have cross-trained in all areas and can assist all patrons with any needs.
The programs and events have had to change a bit over the last year. However, Ms. Deborah and her staff are creative.
“We were grateful to be able to conduct our Summer Reading program in June, with as many as 97 children in attendance. It was terrific fun. The children enjoyed it and we had a blast. Community volunteers involved in this event included Comanche Study Club members, teachers, and teen volunteers.
It was definitely a group effort and very successful.”
Ms. Deborah has worked extensively with children in the educational world. “Giving the community access to lifelong education is important to me. This is a marvelous school district and I hope that we can reinforce what they are teaching. We have several retired teachers on our board who are passionate about learning and literacy. I’m thrilled that we’re able to glean from their knowledge.”
For those able to come into the library, CPL offers AWE an early literacy game station. These three units offer quite a few learning games that cover various subjects. “The children love the games and home-schooling parents often utilize them.”
The CPL staff are in the process of organizing an online Story Time for the wee ones. “We will have a story, song, poem, and craft.” Ms. Deborah explained how this process will work. “Parents will be able to stop by and get the craft kit so their children can participate as they watch the online Story Time.”
‘Tis the Season, and Ms. Deborah is creating ways to help Santa during difficult times.
“Santa time is in the works, and Story Time at Christmas will include Mrs. Santa,” Ms. Deborah added. “I have invited Mrs. Claus to read the book A Bit of Applause for Mrs. Clause.”
To find a book or access resources online, go to the homepage of the Comanche Public Library website, www.comanchepubliclibrary.org. To check out a book, enter "catalog" into the search bar. This will pull up the online card catalog. Enter the author or title for the book you want and place it in your cart

to be checked out. When requested, the CPL even provides curbside service.
Ms. Deborah reminds us, “Call ahead of time to ensure your books are ready when you arrive. Pull up to the rear entry and call to let us know you’ve arrived. We will promptly bring your books out to you.”
“If you have any issues, or if you would like further information about our digital collection through Overdrive, give us a call and we'll be happy to help.” Ms. Deborah added. “People love Overdrive. Kindle and audiobooks are convenient to find and download, especially for those who travel.
Located at 311 N. Austin, Comanche Public Library’s hours of operation are Monday - Wednesday and Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday 9:00 a.m. - noon. The library is closed on Thursday and Sunday.

Today large cities explode into chaotic cesspools and small communities fade into ghost towns. Which path is ahead for Comanche County? Will our young people have a future here? Will seniors be able to safely retire in our neighborhood? Who has a voice in the future growth of our community?
“In the face of all these uncertainties, we need a plan to survive and prosper.” Judge Stephanie L. Davis shares exciting news for our county. “We’re ready to develop a comprehensive county-wide strategic plan.”
A 1992 Comanche High School graduate, Judge Davis received her Bachelor of Business Administration from Texas Tech University and her Doctor of Jurisprudence from Texas Wesleyan University School of Law in 2001 and was sworn in as County Judge in January 2019. She knows and loves Comanche County.
“These ideas are the seeds to grow Comanche County into an even more desirable place to live and raise a family.”
“Shortly after I took office, I made a plan for my vision for Comanche County but that was my vision. I wanted to know what vision the people who voted for me have for our communities. What is their vision of the county in 10, 20, or 30 years?”
Counties, municipalities, even nations are great at dreaming, but projects need a plan in order to achieve the dream. Judge Davis began her research soon after she was elected to office. “Out of 254 counties in the state, less than 20 have county-wide strategic plans.” Judge Davis explains. “I found a plan for Liberty County. It was well thought out, professional. Texas A&M’s Texas Target Communities program was involved in formulating Liberty’s award-winning strategic plan. As I researched, I had no idea how to get in touch with this program.”
As fate would have it, two weeks later an invitation came in the mail from Texas A&M for counties to apply for this project. The application process is extremely competitive, but Judge Davis poured her heart into a letter and waited.
“Then Covid hit,” she says. “I knew our county had to have a new direction to make it through this economic downturn. I sent another letter to Texas A&M’s commit-
tee, and I mobilized every Aggie I knew. They helped me make connections with people. Former Lieutenant Governor Ben Barnes, DeLeon’s Hiram, plus a Texas senator and a representative wrote letters. We flooded the Texas A&M University (TAMU) Chancellor’s office. Then I received a phone call from Senator Buckingham, and we not only were selected for the project, but we were also awarded a $10,000 grant to go toward this project.”
TXTC is an award-winning, service-learning program and university-wide community engagement initiative, where faculty, professional staff, and students from the Department of Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning and the Public Partnership & Outreach efforts of Texas A&M University join with local citizens to provide technical assistance in developing locally tai-

lored planning, design, and development strategies. "Along with community leaders from Comanche, Gustine, and DeLeon, we created a county-wide task force of twenty-plus people—farmers, ranchers, business owners,” Judge Davis explains. “At the end of the day this is not a plan a few people put together—this is the voice of the county of what they want for the future. A plan to address Comanche County's immediate challenges, long-term needs, and the opportunity to develop a guide to recover and thrive.
County Extension Agent Mike Berry became invaluable in meeting with the Texas A&M team and the county citizens often. “The Texas Target Communities program is providing an unprecedented opportunity for individuals and entities from throughout the county to work together to form a vision that will help to ensure a prosperous future for the county. With nearly twenty proposed subdivisions coming into the county, it is obvious that Comanche County is moving toward long-term growth. The Texas A&M TXTC program offers us a platform to create the tools to help manage that growth for the current residents of Comanche County and for those who will soon call Comanche County home.”
Judge Davis praises TAMU’s advanced graduate classes, working on surveys, creating useful maps, and providing tips for infrastructure on increasing subdivisions. “These classes are building an end product, giving us steps to reach that product.”
One thing that’s unique in Comanche County is a Youth Task Force. We enlisted juniors and seniors from each high school in the county to hear the voice of our youth. What will it take to get young people to stay or make them come back to Comanche?”
Comanche High School Senior Harrison Sides adds, “It’s exciting to be a small part of something that can be so impactful to our community!”
Alan Lesley General Manager and CEO at Comanche Electric Cooperative Association is another member working for the good of the community. “It’s exciting to see so many segments of our community engage in this planning process. These ideas are the seeds. With work and commitment, they’ll grow and the fruit that is produced will make Comanche County an even more desirable place to live and raise a family.”
“Now we have an opportunity for everyone in the community to come together to understand the aspirations, assets, and gaps in the community, so we can together come up with a plan for the future,” Judges Davis continues. “TXTC is a facilitator of this process—listening, and documenting the needs of the community, and helping strategize with different tools poised to address them.”
Task Force member and publisher of De Leon Free Press, Jon Awbrey, says, “It’s rare when an agricultural county in the middle of the state would have access to world-class planning and strategies for the future. Comanche County is very lucky to have been afforded this opportunity. This is in large part due to the organization and push by Comanche County Judge Stephanie Davis.”
Judge Davis adds, “The purpose of all this is to get an action plan, so the county and all the cities can work together. It's time to be part of this effort. Let’s roll up our sleeves and get working!"

ARainbow Room is “a ray of hope in a child’s dreams.” It is an emergency resource center available to CPS caseworkers to help them meet the critical needs of abused and neglected children. It consists of a store-like setting that allows Child Protective Services workers to go “shopping” for the children and families on their caseloads. The room is stocked with new items such as clothing, shoes, toys and games, diapers, formula, school supplies, hygiene products and cleaning products. Every item in the Rainbow Room is donated or purchased from donations.
“To every child – I dream of a world where you can laugh, dance, sing, learn, live in peace and be happy.”
One of the Comanche County CPS workers requested a Rainbow Room. Child Protective Services promptly rented a storage building and voted to supply it. Since opening in July, many children, babies through high school, have been served. CPS workers have seen an increase in child abuse since the pandemic hit, and the child abuse reported is more serious in nature.

“Jesus loves the little children, All the children of the world. Red and yellow, black and white, All are precious in His sight, Jesus loves the little children of the world.”
Abused and neglected children can be removed from the home anytime, 24/7. Often, they have nothing but the clothes on their back, maybe just a diaper, with no shoes or socks. The Comanche Rainbow Room has a combination lock on the door, so the CPS workers can gain access at any time.
“Then the little children were brought to Jesus for Him to place His hands on them and pray for them. And the disciples rebuked those who brought them. But Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to Me, and do not hinder them! For the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.’”— Matthew 19:13-14
The room is stocked with NEW items only. Basic items needed include clothing, coats, windbreakers, hoodies, socks, shoes, diapers, formula, blankets, car seats, personal hygiene items, household cleaning sup-

plies, school supplies, toys, games, books, Pack ‘n’ Play Portable Play Yards, cribs and mattresses. Currently, Comanche’s Rainbow Room does not have any cribs or mattresses.
“The first happiness of every child is to know that he is loved.”— Don Bosco
Only new items are accepted as donations, because abused and neglected children deserve better than abused and neglected things. The citizens of Comanche County have been very generous. No fund raisers have been required, nor are any planned.

The Comanche County Welfare Boards want people to be knowledgeable and concerned about prevention and treatment of child abuse and neglect. They sponsor Angel Tree in Comanche and De Leon during the months of November and December. They also host holiday celebrations for caseworkers and foster children. They provide support for family group decision making meetings, foster parent training, and foster youth conferences. They sponsor public awareness events to promote child abuse prevention and recruit foster and adoptive homes. They coordinate public awareness events to promote child

“Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight.”
Romans 12:15-15
There are four types of child abuse. Sadly, abused children often suffer more than one type of mistreatment. Physical abuse may be more easily detected because of visible bruising, burns, and broken bones. Emotional abuse—criticizing, insulting, rejecting, or withholding love—may manifest itself by a child being extremely withdrawn and insecure, or they may act out by criticizing and insulting others since that is their learned behavior. Sexual abuse includes rape, touching or fondling, or involving a child in pornography. Children who have been “groomed”—befriended, showered with attention and gifts—may be reluctant to report the person who has shown them “love.” They may also be shamed into believing the heinous atrocity against them was somehow their fault. Neglect includes failure to provide for a child’s basic physical, medical, or emotional needs. Leaving a young child home alone or failing to provide needed medical care may also be considered neglect. Texas law requires that child abuse or neglect be reported when there is “cause to believe” that abuse or neglect has occurred or will occur. CPS will investigate and determine the nature and extent of the problem, evaluate the child’s condition and safety, and if appropriate, initiate action to protect the child.

“When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You? And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My bretheren, you did it to Me.”

Stepping through the red door at Shuga Pops is like crossing a magic portal into the past, a sweet time of innocence. The sugary scent of delectable candies and popcorn permeate the air. Adults once again become kids in the candy store with jars and jars packed full of brilliantly-colored candies. Oh, what to choose—nostalgic vintage jaw breakers, fire balls, red hots, licorice, wax coke bottles, chocolate rocks, candy necklaces and Decco Candy Wafers that have been around since the early 1900s? Or some new novelty like goose eggs, chicken eggs, sour worms, candy Legos, peach rings, or going bananas? Perhaps a decadent candy bar like the U-NO original, rich, creamy chocolate. Or a long-lasting, chewy Big Hunk to last all day. Then there are the hard Gilliam candy sticks, since 1927, in root beer, cherry, watermelon, lemon, cherry cola, and more. Maybe crispy, crunchy peanut, pecan or jalapeno brittle will tickle your taste buds. Hope House makes the brittle to support their rehab center, making it a double pleasure for the consumer and producer.
Oh, and the Pop Corn! Movie Theater Butter—sure to enhance any drama, action, or love story you can get your paws on. White Cheddar melts in your mouth and has you coming back for more. Cheddar tastes so good, it’ll make that Cheetah fella change his spots. Dill Pickle with just enough twang to rile those taste buds and want sum-more. BBQ Bacon with just enough bacon to make you go hog wild. Garlic Parm—so much garlic even the dog won’t wanna kiss ya! Sweet N Sassy Flavors: Vanilla Confetti, Jalapeno Caramel, Honey Hush, Red Hot Kettle, Buttered Toffee, Caramel, and Kettle. How did this delicious sweet shop come into being? Beth and Dennis Whitsell saw a need to help support students who wanted to participate in extra-curricular activities at De Leon.
"Oh, what to choose!"
"The sugary scent of delectable candies and popcorn permeate the air."
They bought a kettle corn trailer to use as a fund raiser to help kids. After several years, Beth took time off her career as a nurse to pursue her love of popcorn and serving the community. Thanks to Hico Popcorn Works for helping Beth and son Luke learn the trade. Thanks to Kelly and Howard Dickey for helping make the dream a reality. In addition to getting to know members of the community, their desire is to share the love, joy, and happiness of Jesus.
Beth candies all the popcorn with sugar, butter and flavor in ten-gallon batches. The fantastic employees, Diane, Sophie, Chloe, Mayson and daughter Madison add the extra flavorings. More than just a family owned business, Shuga Pops is a loving community of family and friends working and enjoying life together.
The warm, homey atmosphere provides a perfect setting to get to know the desires, dreams, and prayer needs of customers. Shuga Pops evokes good, old memories for some and creates sweet, new memories for others. Laughter fills the spaces between the candy displays as friendships forge around the tables in the quaint shop. In a world separated and divided, people need a sweet respite.
In an ever-changing world, the antique furnishings offer a sense of stability and permanence. The long, mirrored bar along one wall came from the Blue Moon. The taffy cabinet once contained ladies’ “unmentionables” in an old department store. The cabinet with glass doors standing behind the counter served as a refrigerated flour cabinet. The drawers at the bottom held blocks of ice, while the large fan in the center circulated the cool air. Well-made items stood the test of time, and so shall we.
The first year, the Whitsells just ran the shop. Then COVID hit. Beth had to go back to work, this time as a Hospice nurse covering the areas of De Leon, Gorman, Comanche, Hamilton, Stephenville, Gatesville and Santo. Her husband continues to work with his mobile X-ray business. The Shuga Pops team was truly blessed by God through the pandemic. Thankfully, they did not contract COVID. Participating with Totelcom Communications Company to provide meals for the elderly, shut-ins, and those locked down, they offered bags of popcorn. They kept the business open with curbside service.
"In addition to getting to know members of the community, their desire is to share the love, joy, and happiness of Jesus. "
"Laughter fills the spaces between the candy displays as friendships forge around the tables in the quaint shop. In a world separated and divided, people need a sweet respite."
The Whitsells plan to spread the goodness around. They opened a booth in Shaw’s Marketplace in Brownwood. Soon they will open a Shuga Pops in Comanche. In a world with so much turmoil and sad news, take a break in a peaceful, downhome, pleasant place. You can’t be unhappy eating candy. “You are what you eat, so eat something sweet.”
