For the first time in the University’s history, the Brown Annual Fund has reached $50 million, and we couldn’t be prouder. This milestone represents more than just a fundraising benchmark; it demonstrates the tremendous commitment of our Brown Annual Fund donors—all of you.

For the last three years we have observed firsthand the power of this incredible community, and it is our hope that as you read through this FY22 Impact Report you will get a strong sense of the overwhelmingly positive effect your support has had on Brown’s students and faculty. With your support of the Annual Fund you are changing lives, and changing the world.

The entire Brown experience relies on your contributions to the Annual Fund. With your gift you have provided transformational financial aid and experiential learning opportunities for our students, aided the recruitment of faculty operating at the cutting edge of academia and research, and advanced key University-wide priorities such as creating a model for both sustainability and equity on college campuses. You have made Brown the place it is, and the world is better for it.

As we look back at the last three years, we are thrilled to complete our tenure as Brown Annual Fund co-chairs on such a fantastic note. Thank you for everything you make possible with your support of the Brown Annual Fund.

LEADERSHIP DONORS

“I had the great opportunity to go to Brown and have benefited from the experience. I want to support Brown directly, but also indirectly, in helping bring the most talented students to College Hill who may not have the resources to attend the University otherwise.”

“I support the Annual Fund because Brown shaped me into who I am today. It’s rewarding to be able to give back and continue to have an ongoing role in the Brown community that I love so much.”

“I am a big believer that the Brown education and culture set the foundation for achieving the dreams of tomorrow. I give back to the Annual Fund because it’s the most direct way to enable those dreams for all students today while continuing to allow the University to invest and expand upon what Brown has to offer the world.”

9

BROWN BY THE NUMBERS

Helping Brown foster a truly inclusive campus by providing programmatic support for resources benefiting students from historically underrepresented groups.

$1.3 M DOLLARS 924 DONORS

“I spend my free time attending heritage events at the Brown Center for Students of Color (BCSC), many of which speak to my identity and provide a sense of belonging. From community dinners to film screenings to simply using the cultural rooms as a quiet study spot, the BCSC creates space for me and other BIPOC students to learn from and connect with each other.”

14

“I found a place that demonstrates commitment to the LGBTQ+ community, which allowed me to freely explore my sexuality and my gender without having to feel any shame or judgment. This center has given me the opportunity to connect with other LGBTQ+ students through open discussions about being BIPOC, social events with incredible guest speakers, and by having the center open during the day as a place to just gather and be.”

“The Sarah Doyle Center is an incredible space that has helped me grow both personally and professionally. I love exploring the extensive feminist literature collection and participating in our Women’s Peer Counselor (WPC) signature events. I recently organized an event with fellow WPCs where we explored boundary setting as a form of self care with our residents!”

Campus Sustainability Fund

Brown has taken on efforts driven by science, innovative engineering, and financial modeling to ensure the University is able to operationally and financially fulfill its commitment to decarbonize campus and claim a net-zero campus by 2040. Donor support of this fund aids the University in these efforts.

$126 K DOLLARS 242 DONORS

“What makes Brown’s approach unique — and is of the utmost importance — is we’re not relying on offsets to accomplish a net-zero campus. The only way to drastically slow the catastrophic changes to our atmosphere is if organizations, like Brown, commit to eliminate fossil fuel burning equipment and source its electricity from renewable sources.”

“I’ve had a meaningful career in primary care medicine with the opportunity to serve patients from disenfranchised communities. While in leadership roles at various Community Health Centers, it was frustrating to see the continued dearth of young, Black physicians, and other underrepresented groups in medicine. I support this scholarship because diversifying the medical student body and ensuring their success is critical to creating equitable health care for all.”

Advancing Diversity in Medicine Term Scholarship Donor

“The Doctoring course has been instrumental in my time as a medical student. Fundamentally, it reminds me of why I chose to go into medicine—to treat patients. Between the weekly in-class sessions and community site visits, Doctoring has given me the opportunity to practice my clinical skills and actively engage with patients. Because of this course, I feel better prepared for clinical years and a career as a physician, which I wouldn’t have without your generous support.”

“Due to your donation, I no longer have to work a minimum wage job that is not in my field to pay for my tuition. This permitted me to take on unpaid public health internships and put all my efforts in improving the public health of Rhode Islanders. The Rhode Island community and I thank you.”

“There will be more pandemics in our future. But, the good news is we can work to prevent the devastating harms we witnessed during COVID-19. Brown’s culture of interdisciplinary collaboration and thought leadership give this university unique power to drive the changes needed to protect us.”

Ryan Marra ’23 2nd Team All Ivy, Baseball

“Besides the opportunity to play for the soccer program and the coaching staff, the community at Brown was a big reason I decided to come here. Walking around campus I could feel how inclusive and welcoming the environment was, something I didn’t feel at a lot of the other schools.”
