Reach for the Stars at Discover Space: A Cosmic Journey The African-American Research Library and Cultural Center (AARLCC) has been awarded the Discover Space: A Cosmic Journey exhibit from the American Library Association. This exhibit is free and open to the public and will be on display July 20 – October 14, 2016. AARLCC is one of only eight sites nationwide that will host this national traveling exhibition that explores the fascinating world of space and astronomy. Discover Space covers topics such as the formation of planetary systems, asteroids and comets, Mars exploration and solar storms impact on Inside this issue : Earth. • A Note from Laura The Discover • Mind Games Space exhibit • Focus on Broward: strives Homegrown Talent to make learning about STEM topics fun with hands-on, multimedia activities where visitors can build their own solar systems on a 42” touch table, learn how telescopes work, play magneto-golf, learn about near real-time changes on the sun, try to save Earth from an asteroid impact and much more. Discover Space: A Cosmic Journey is part of the STAR Library Education Network (STAR_Net) led by the National Center for Interactive Learning at the Space Science Institute. Exhibit partners include the American Library Association, the Lunar and Planetary Institute, and Afterschool Alliance. Discover Space is supported through a grant from the National Science Foundation.
All Events are FREE and will be held at AARLCC July 20 – Teacher Open House Week: Educators are encouraged to explore exhibit as a learning tool for their classroom, open during normal library hours July 25 – Discover Space: A Cosmic Journey Grand Opening featuring an unveiling of 16 new planet stamps with Fort Lauderdale Postmaster David Guiney, all ages, 6 to 7:30PM August 3 – Are Aliens for Real? A search for alien earths – what will finding alien life mean for us? Presented by astronomy teacher Kyle Jeter, Broward County Public Schools 2017 Teacher of the Year, 6 to 7:30PM August 6 – Exploring Space with Virtual Reality and Little Bits Robotics courtesy of the Creation Station, ages 6 and up, 12 to 2PM August 10 – Stellar Astronomy: The Life-Cycle of Stars, presented by Kyle Jeter, all ages, 6 to 7:30PM August 20 – Interactive Online Activity on Exoplanets: Learn about the hundreds of planets and stars that have recently been discovered, presented by astronomy teacher Kyle Jeter, seating limited/please RSVP: 954-357–6210, 12 to 1:30PM August 27 – Astronomy Tools: Learn how to find stars, asteroids and planets with telescopes, observatories and more in this interactive session, all ages, 12 to 1:30PM American Library Association
