BROOKLYN BACON Design has been a concept interweaved throughout my entire life. I grew up in the town of Decatur, IL, raised by an architect and interior designer. Growing up, my dad would always be pointing out buildings in town that he or his firm had designed and I could find him sketching away in the basement in most of his freetime and my mother would bring me along to her interior design client meetings and take me on trips to IKEA as a child, both of them subtly impacting my view of what my career interests might become.

I am currently studying architectural studies with an emphasis in interior design at the University of Missouri. I have an interest in residential architecture as well as interior design on a residential and commercial level. I have been enjoying learning about how materials, color and light play a role in interior design, and how spatial arrangment and organization can be just as much of an impactful design element.

I recently was married this summer which has given me new values and motivations for my academic and career goals. The program the university offers allows me flexibility in being able to work while also continuing my education. Being married has also brought about a new set of limitations as to where I can live, because my husband may need to relocate for work, which allows this program to offer the perfect opportunity for me. I am hoping to continue my education so that I can learn more about architecture and specifically more about residential and sacral projects.

While these previous interests show the kind of work that I am interested in doing, there are some other long term goals that influence my motivation for continuing my education. In five years, I would hope that I would be working with a firm on projects where I can have the flexibility of working on both interior design and architectural aspects of projects.

At the height of my career, I am interested in designing residential homes from start to finish, doing both architectural and interior design for the homes. Wanting to be heavily involved in whatever community I beome a part of later in life, I am wanting to be able to use my architectural license to provide pro-bono work to make an impact on that community. At some point in my career, I hope to work in a foreign country in order to gain a different design perspective and approach, as well as gain a new life experience.

I want to formally thank you for providing educational opportunities such as the architectural program that you offer. Being able to continue my education in a flexible manner is not an opportunity easily found, and I appreciate the diligence the university has to be able to pour into students like myself that need a non-traditional learning environment. I look forward to your response and am excited to be able to have a new educational opportunity.

ENCOUNTER

An intimate experience by providing moments in space and time for users to happen upon which add to the present atmosphere of well-being, togetherness, and quality of contentment found within the North Village Arts District.

LOCATION The Berry Building is located at 1025 Walnut Street in Columbia, MO. This location is within the North Village Arts District; a few blocks away from the main downtown area of Columbia. The Berry Building specifically, has been restored to feature the industrial aesthetics of it’s historical roots in previously being a wholesale grocery store and warehouse. While it is slightly away from the main downtown, there is still the hustle and bustle of city life with a bus stop behind the building. There are also several student apartments nearby and resulting pedestrian traffic because of the high population of college students within the city.

SEATING a moment is created in this seating area because the window is accented by the compression of walls

BUILT-IN STORAGE each room comes with a custom piece of furniture built to store the guest’s belongings

SMALL FOOTPRINT the rooms were designed with a small footprint in order to encourage guests to utilize the large lounge areas within the hotel

SEATING these seating areas are significant because of their arch wall detail, and the arrangement brings an inviting feeling

COUNTER this curved counter is tucked beneath the balcony, creating a space that has more intimacy than others

CASUAL SEATING an arrangement was used for casual seating so that guests can have an informal space within the cafe

This design maximizes intimate settings and minimalist qualities so that guests can focus on areas such as the bedroom seating area for the perfect moments to stop and rest, as well as a more streamlined guest room, to encourage guests to wander out into the rest of the hotel to encounter the gathering spaces.

RESURGENCE Whereas the previous South addition of Ellis Library served to revive “forgotten” artifacts or books, the new addition will bring life to new ideas and concepts that will better serve the modern day patrons.

Neutral tones and natural materials accent the design of the reading room, by allowing the focus to be drawn towards the wall of windows and “tree” like colulmn features.

Pops of a natural green accent this space for the University Archives and Specal Collections. The other neutral colors draw the focus towards the wooden slat walls that separate office spaces.

TANGENCY

This architectural project within the Fulton Market District of Chicago aims to be a place of connection for people, transportation, and history, as well as bring identity to the district as a whole, throught the building mass and interior design.

ATRIUM

HEART OF VERTICL CIRCULATION Using Bruno Zevi’s principles of modern architecture, asymmetry and dissonance are created in the design. Asymmetry is created but then is broken due to the vertical slide transformation in the building form, which leaves a winding circulation throughout the structure’s atrium. The use of the atrium space creates the intended connectivity of the site and blurs indoor/outdoor space.

This concept brings clear identity to the site and the differing places that surround it. The point of integration is the starting point to understanding the identiy of place: it is similar to America being nicknamed the “melting pot”.

The density of the surrounding area and access to most nodes of transportation make this concept site specific. This should be a

space that connects people to people, people to transportation, people to activities, and people to history. By making the space accessible from multiple entries, and providing a space for people to connect, the site will become a point of integration for the many aspects of the Fulton Market District.
