THE GIFT OF friendship This may not be what you were expecting to find in your photographer’s client guide, but if you don’t read anything else in this magazine, please read this. It’s so important for me to explain how I view my relationshiop with my couples. Early into my business, I started realizing that what I desired in my business, more than anything, was a personal connection with my couples. Everyone wants to be known, seen, loved and befriended. I don’t know if I’ve ever met a human being who didn’t appreciate someone caring about who they are and what they’re passionate about. In the early years of my business, I committed to forming friendships with my clients and intentionally caring to get to know them. Having a heart for genuine friendships in my business has become a huge part of my purpose in life. Not only are my friendships with my couples a gift to me, but it positively impacts my client’s wedding day experience, too. When you are getting ready the morning of your wedding day, it will be a relief to feel like a friend walks through those doors with a camera and not just a random hired vendor. Friendship breeds comfortability and comfortability leads to trust... and trust is something that EVERY bride needs to have in their relationship with their wedding photographer! I’m so excited to get to know you during your engagement session!

Your E NG AGE M E N T SESSION

SELECTING THE R IGHT

Location The location of your engagement session is up to you! I have lots of favorite locations that I am happy top reccomend or we can photograph somewhere special to you. Good light and minimal crowds are two of the biggest factors - but the most important thing is that you choose somewhere that feels authentic to you. Your location will also most likely be the deciding factor in figuring out the best day for your session. If its a location that is normally very busy on weekends such as parks, gardens, downtown cities, or places that host events, then your session should be scheduled on a weekday evening to avoid crowds which can very easily take up precious time of your session and can dictate where we can shoot at.

13

L O C AT I O N L O G I S T I C S - I love shooting at gorgeous locations. I recommend we go to two locations max for engagements. A general rule of thumb is the more locations and outfits, the less images but the more variety you’ll have. - I can do weekday sunrise sessions if necessary! I require sunrise shoots for those who want to take portraits in very crowded locations such as the DC Cherry Blossoms, cities, and places that are normally busy, etc. - If your location requires any type of photography permit, they usually have to be taken care of far in advance. If the location requires the photographer to obtain the permit then the permit fee will be added to your wedding collection. - I love when couples include props! Nothing is too big. A cute tandem bike, a couch, a picnic for two. It is up to you!

T I P: My Sundays tend to fill up in advance. You can get a Fast Pass to the front of the line by scheduling during the week. 14

ENGAGEMENT PREP It’s always a little intimidating to have your picture taken .... even if it’s just a photo on an iphone that is taken by a friend. We still want to look nice, make sure nothing is in our teeth and that our hair is behaving! I realize that preparing for your engagement session can be a little overwhelming. Over the next few pages, I’ll be providing tips for outfits, handling nerves and recommendations that will make your shoot the best it can possibly be!

the b a s i c s + what to bring POCKETS | Empty your pockets! Literally. You don’t want to have key chains or phones showing through your pockets. (This is for the guys especially!) TIMING | The sun sets quickly especially if your shoot is not in the summer months. The later you arrive, the less time we have to shoot! Once the sun is set, the shoot will be over. RING CLEANING | Clean the ring! I love to shoot a few rings shots while you change outfits! The cleaner the better.

PARKING FEE | This may not apply to your shoot, but you always want to plan in advance for a cash-only parking fee that we may encounter or any tolls. We’ve had instances where this has caused some stress and stress is what we want to avoid! CLOTHING | I’ll explain this more in-depth in the next few pages but generally, our couples like to bring one casual outfit and one dressier outfit! If you’re unsure about a few pieces, feel free to bring all options and I can help you decide.

CHANGING CLOTHES | As much as I would like to say that we always have restrooms for outfit changes, more often than not, our clients do quick outfit changes in their car if there are no other options!

LIP COLOR & HAIRSPRAY | You may need to apply more lip color after one outfit change and a few kisses. (If you have a bold lip color, try to have a matte finish so it won’t transfer to your groom as intensly!). Hairspray and a brush will be helpful if your hair struggles in the humidity!

DEEP BREATHS | I’m going to help you along the way and it’s going to be a blast! Enjoy this time together, and make a date out of it! Plan dinner afterwards and celebrate!!

FLIP FLOPS | If you’re wearing shoes that are difficult to walk in but look awesome, bring some comfy shoes to change to while we walk to each shooting location!

NAT U R A L L IGH T I NG I believe that natural light from the sun and its ref lections creates photographs that feel fresh, timeless and true to you as a couple. I begin all engagement sessions two hours before the scheduled sunset during “the golden hour,” when the light is the dreamiest. Use a sunset calculator online to determine the scheduled sunset for the date and location you’d like to do your session. Then, just subtract two hours to figure out your start time. Remember, the sun sets much earlier during the colder months of the year and much later during the warmer months, so make sure to factor that in when choosing your engagement session date, especially if you’re taking time off work or have evening plans afterward. To get the most out of your session, please plan a buffer when getting ready so you can arrive a few minutes early. I am only able to shoot when natural light is still in the sky, so I want to take advantage of every minute we have together before the sun goes down. I want you to have the most beautiful photos possible. If the weather looks cloudy or rainy, lets talk about rescheduling to a day with better weather if you are able to.

E NG AGE M E N T PR EP & OU T FI TS It’s always a little intimidating to have your pictures taken. Even if its just a photo on an iPhone that is taken by a friend, we still want to look nice, make sure nothing is in our teeth and that our hair is behaving! I realize that preparing for your engagement session can be a little overwhelming. The next few pages have tips for outfits and accessories that will make the e-shoot preparation a little bit more managable!

- Don’t try to MATCH... Try to pick - Most often, couples like to have one casual, everyday outfits and accessories that coordinate instead. If everyone outfit and then one outfit that is dressier! This will wore the same exact color at their e-shoot, how boring give your shoot two totally different “looks”. would those images be? - Empty your pockets! Literally. You don’t want to - Don’t be afraid to be BOLD! Accessorize and make have key chains or phones showing through your your outfits your own! Scarves, bold necklaces, fun shoes pockets. (This is for the guys especially!) and floral crowns are always welcomed!

23

- MOST PATTERNS are actually ok... However, graphics are not favorable for portraits. If you’re wearing a pattern, make sure it’s not overwhelming and distracting.

- Make sure you’re comfortable in what you’re wearing. And ladies, if the top is super low cut or the dress is super short, that will limit the amount of angles I can shoot from.

-It’s best to avoid wearing super bright colors that can reflect weird color tones on your skin such as hot pink or anything close to neon.

- BE ON TIME! The sun is only out for so long! The later you arrive, the less time we have to shoot! And nobody wants that!

- Be sure to check out my Pinterest boards for more inspiration if you’re having trouble! @christynphotog

- Relax! You don’t have to be a pro at this. I’m going to help you along the way and it’s going to be a blast! Enjoy this time together and make a date out of it.

DECIDING ON YOUR

STYLE

what style do you prefer? BOLD or NUETRAL

DRE SSY or CA SUAL

CLASSIC or TRENDY These choices represent the three main decisions you will have to make in regards to your outfit choices. There are no right or wrong answers! Maybe you want one outfit to be dressy and the other to be casual. Maybe you want one outfit to be very light and nuetral but you want to wear more color in the next outfit. These categories will hopefully help you determine what you’re hoping for in your engagement session. If you’re feeling stuck and can’t seem to determine what you prefer, that’s very normal! Here are some general “rules of thumb” when it comes to styling during an engagement session. Once you read through these, you may have a better understanding of what you perfer and you can start planning your outfits. These “rules of thumbs” are based off of my experience and aren’t concrete rules that can’t be broken. However, if you have questions about one of them in regards to what you want to wear, just email me and we can talk about what would be best! :

Things to Avoid: 1. Colors to avoid : bright reds, neons, bright oranges (they reflect color onto skin and can be difficult to edit!) 2. Avoid patterns smaller than a quarter : Tiny patterns cause something called “Chromatic Abberation” in digital images. Men’s checkered shirts are fine if the “checks” are on the larger side. 3. Alternate Heaviness: If one of you is wearing very dark jeans, the other may want to wear lighter pants. If one of you is wearing a navy top, the other shouldn’t wear a dark/heavy colored top. To a certain degree, alternating the “heaviness” of your outfits can make your images look more balanced. 4. Avoid one of you being casual while the other is more dressy: This can look a bit awkward in photos. If one of you is dressed up and the other is casual, it can look a little odd in your images. 5. Other things to avoid: Tennis shoes, Graphic tees, Bold logos on shirts, Sunglasses & Baseball Hats - unless these are important to your style.

16

ROM A N TIC ST Y L E R ECIPE If you’re hoping for a more romantic style of shoot that includes “light” and “airy” colors, you can actually make outfit choices that will lend your images to turn out brighter, softer and extra photogenic! Here are some ingredients that go into creating a romantic styled shoot. It’s important to note that you do not need to choose all of these ingredients in order to have a light and airy style to your images but the more ingredients you include, the more romantic it will be: - Neutral Colors: Blushes, tans, light pinks, faint blues and light minty teals, creams, grays and whites will always result in more of a light and airy look in your images. These colors photograph softer and more romantically! - Long, Flowy Skirts/Dresses: Dresses and skirts with feminine ruffles, multiple layers of fabric and the ability to blow and move in the wind will always photograph beautifully! You would be amazed at how impactful moving fabric softens an image. - Khakis vs. Jeans: If you really want your images to be as bright as possible, consider having your groom wear lighter pants instead of dark dress pants or dark jeans.

25

BR IGHT & BOLD R ECIPE Just like the “Romantic” recipe, you don’t have to apply all of these “ingredients to get a perfectly BRIGHT & BOLD look to your engagement session. These ingredients include: - Only one wears a pattern: If one of you has a bold pattern, it’s very important that the other doesn’t. The more bold the pattern, the more important this rule is! - Bold Backgrounds: A lot of time, if my couples are going for a bold and bright look, I will notice solid colored backgrounds to use for part of their engagement session! It’s a double win if the background coordinates with their outfits! - Only one bold color: If you really want a bold and bright look but you want to do it well and tastefully, I would suggest that only one of you have a bright and bold colored outfit and the other stay in a solid nuetral to avoid over-doing it! - Large Patterns are Preferred: If you really want to wear a pattern, my only request is that your pattern is on the larger side. Patterns that are smaller than a quarter can be difficult to photograph. This isn’t true of all patterns but it’s a good general rule to go by!

28

THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS TOO DR ESSED UP! Have you thought about rocking a sequined gown, tulle skirt, or flower crown but just never had an occasion for it? This is your chance to do it up! Remember, there is no such thing as “too dressed up” when it comes to your engagement session, so don’t be afraid to have some fun! If you don’t want to add a new permanent piece to your collection, a lot of my brides love Rent the Runway for their engagement photos because you don’t have to spend a lot to feel like a million bucks. Plus, you can send the outfits back when the session is over. Other brides just love having a great excuse to bring a new permanent piece (or two!) into their closet!

29

ON E OR T WO I TS U P TO YOU

Most of my brides who choose two outfits will bring one “wow” dress/skirt, and then another shorter sun dress or cocktail dress for a more casual “us on a date” feel. But if you want to bring two “wow” dresses and forgo the more casual dress altogether, give yourself permission to do it! The camera loves runway-esque apparel and so do I! Remember, you don’t have to bring two looks if its too stressful or you’d rather just stick to one fabulous look. Just one outfit that you love will be so much better than one outfit you love paired with another you’re not very excited about. So, one or two? It’s really up to you! Long, flowy dresses and skirt look amazing on camera because they bring extra movement to the photos, especially when juxtaposed with nature, like a field, forest, lake, or beach. Cute, shorterlength dresses photograph beautifully as well but they can more limiting. Dresses and skirts tend to look very stunning on camera. Some couples like to include a third outfit that is special to them, like something related to their careers, their favorite sports team, or just a super casual look. We can get the last few photos in a third outfit if you want - just let me know! No matter what, the most important thing is that you feel comfortable and beautiful.

32

C O O R D I N AT I N G T H E L O O K AS you are coordinating your outfit with your fiance’s, keep in mind that your outfits will look the most cohesive on camera when the color palettes coordinate, but do not necessarily “match.” You should each aim to wear a different dominant color, but stay within a similar color palette family. So if you’re wearing a blush dress, soft blue earrings and nude heels (blush being your dominant color), then he could wear a navy coat with gray pants, paired with brown leather shoes and maybe even a blush pocket square. Now he has his own dominant color (navy) while still incorporating a few touches of your color palette. Most of my brides choose their dress first, and then put together their fiance’s outfit based on that. That said, wear what you love! If matching perfectly fits you, do it!

33

34

F L AT T E R I N G Y O U R F E AT U R E S In my experience, every woman, regardless of her shape has an area of her body that she’s selfconscious about, so recognizing what area that is in advance is key. Choosing f lattering silhouettes and colors that complement your natural features is the best way to ensure you’ll love the way you look in your photos. Pairing an accessory or two with your outfits can really help bring some extra dimension to your images. Big statement necklaces bring a lot of pop to the photos, while the smaller, delicate ones are not as noticeable on camera. Belts, bowties, bracelets and earrings bring great visual interest, so choose one or two that don’t compete for attention.

ENGAGEMENT STYLE GUIDE | 5

HAIR & MAKEUP Professional hair and makeup can be a fun engagement session option because it removes the stress of getting ready on your own. From lash extensions to blown-out hair, professional hair and makeup will give you an extra boost of confidence in front of the camera, and it always photographs like a dream. If you’re working with a makeup artist, have her apply your makeup in natural light, if possible, so that it looks fresh and not too heavy. Plus, that’s the type of light I’ll be shooting in, so it’ll give you the best expectation of how it will translate on camera. Most of my brides feel like their makeup is “too much” at first, since its more than you would wear on a normal day, especially when it comes to false lashes, so if you feel that way at the beginning, don’t worry! Good makeup artists know how to get it just right for the camera. Try taking a few selfies after you finish your makeup and see how you feel about it. It is important to love your look! If you need a recommendation for hair and makeup, please let me know! I work with some wonderful hair and makeup artists. This can be a really nice way to try out your wedding day makeup ahead of time to make sure that you and your makeup artist are a good match, too. No matter what, you want to look and feel like you!

38

SOME HELPFUL TIPS!

A LITTLE EXTR A POLISH Don’t forget, you ring will be center stage, so give yourself permission to get it cleaned and your nails done, too! Most jewelry stores will even clean your ring for free too!

SK I P T H E SPR AY TA N Although it might seem counter-intuitive, I reccommed that you do not get a spray tan before your session, even a few days prior, becasue it tends to photograph orange ever when its applied subtly and by a profession. Your actual skin tone will photograph the most beautifully and naturally.

A DD SOM E ACCESSOR I ES Pairing an accessory or two with your outfits can really help bring some extra dimension to your images. Big statement necklaces bring a lot of pop to the photos, while the smaller, delicate ones are not as noticeable on camera. Belts, bowties, bracelets and earrings brings great visual interest, so choose one or two that don’t compete for attention.

B R I N G WA L K I N G S H O E S Bring a pair of f lats or comfortable pair of shoes to wear when moving from place to place. Your feet will thank you later and you still get to show off your cute heels!

If you know me then you know my cats and dogs are important members of our family. I’ve shot many sessions and weddings that included furry friends! If you would like to add your dog, cat, or other pet in for part of your session I’m all for it! Here’s a few helpful tips! First we will need a friend/family member that is willing to tag along and help out; preferably someone your dog is comfortable with already. This way we can ease your dog into photos once you’re warmed up in front of the camera and if there are any distractions nearby we have a person to help. Bringing a helper allows you both to focus more on each other and less on making sure your pup is behaving. It’s a good idea to feed your dog so they don’t have an empty belly. Try to tire your dog out before your session, this way they will be more calm and cooperative. Take your dog for a walk before your session starts. If your dog loves to jump, have them arrive at the end portion with your first outfit or at the last 15 minutes of your session in your second outfit. Please make sure your location is pet friendly; not every park or outdoor area allows dogs. Always bring treats and a toy for bribery! This will help get them to look towards the camera and they can be rewarded. Try not to get too set on specific ideas when it comes to taking photos with your dog. As we know, they can be unpredictable and don’t always want to follow directions when it comes to posing and sitting still for the camera - but no matter what you will have photos with them that you can cherish forever! 43

Don’t forget waste bags if we’re shooting in a public place. If its really hot outside bring along water and a portable water bowl. Last you’ll want to make sure your dog is looking their best. Groom them a week prior or bath them beforhand so he or she is clean and ready for their closeup. Also consider what collar & leash to bring. You already spent time coordinating your outfits together so make sure it doesn’t clash with the colors you’ve chosen. Example, if your dogs leash is a neon color, it will stick out like a sore thumb!
