OMBORI OFFICE

WO R K S PAC E

Brief: Design a 15,000 sq ft three story workplace to be occupied in the year 2030 on the prescribed site, 231 Bowery, on the Lower East Side. Work with an organization of your choosing and address the pressing topics redefining workplace design, engagement with the city and the public, and the work culture in 2030.

Company: Ombori Technology Concept: As we near the year 2030, the lines between work and home are blurred as technology allows organizations’ borders to have no limits. As we deep dive into the technology era of retail, Ombori Technology has been at the forefront of this movement; offering digital in-store shopping assistants, interactive store windows, self-checkout, and way-finding.

Conceptualizing a Manhattan Headquarters for the Stockholm based company proved to be a consolation for exploring how technology has affected our performance on both an input and output level.

The company’s output is actualized through a combination of collaborative and “deeper” more individualized work.

The Headquarters is comprised of three floors that serve vastly different functions. Upon entering the building on the ground floor, employees will be immersed into a collaborative space and can circulate higher within the levels to find enclosed private offices on the top floor, conducive to extremely deep and focused work. The mid-level, 2nd floor plan, presents employees the opportunity to work individually, but with the energy of others present.

CONCEPT MODEL The model examines a multi-level approach, where in the scattered orbs at the base represent a sea of miscellaneous office tasks and the stacked orbs coloured in an ombre pattern represent cultivating a higher level of focus and achievement as you move to higher floors within the building.

As we progress as a society into the technologically influenced future, the ability to perform deep work is becoming highly valued and increasingly rare. Guided and inspired by the stories in Cal Newport’s book, “Deep Work: Rules for Focused

Success in a Distracted World,” I synthesized designing an environment in which inhabitants would be guided to a place of distraction-free work. The model examines a multilevel approach, where in the scattered orbs at the base represent a sea

ARCHES

The arches lean into the design concept; in architecture the arch serves as a structure to lift the mind to a higher level/ideal. When workers enter the vaulted spaces they may subconsciously feel a higher sense of focus and removal from distractions, therefore allowing the production of deeper and more focused work. The arcades give way for focused yet collaborative spaces on the lower floors; the single arches lend themselves to creating private and more secluded spaces on the third level.

BESPOKE STAIRS

Left: Study of bespoke fire-stairs to be placed in a 2� thick glass enclosure at the front of the building. The design of the staircase is intended to mirror the iconic NYC exterior fire escapes. Fire escapes in the city act as balconies & outdoor space for many residents, therefore formulating them into a design element felt more organic.

BACHELOR PAD

RESIDENCE

Brief: A client has purchased two adjacent apartment units in a residential building and wishes to combine them into a single residence. They have hired a designer to develop a concept and produce drawings that provide enough detail to build the space consistent with the design intent.

Concept: Drawing upon the original style of an Italian Villa, two single family apartments were combined into a single residence for a client’s bachelor pad.

The client travels annually to coastal regions in Southeast Asia for holiday and therefore desires a space that encapsulates the calmness, simplicity, and meditative state that he experiences there.

Natural finishes including, cement flooring and wood paneled ceilings were carefully specified for the space. As the Koi fish symbolizes good luck and fortune in Japanese culture, selected bathroom fittings include the Koi washbasin and soaking tub by Maison Valentina.

THE PRESTON

HOTEL

Brief: Conceptualize a hotel brand and re-design a hotel on the prescribed site, 222 West 23rd St, formally the famed Hotel Chelsea. The executed design should communicate the primary experimental components of the hotel and the private guest suites should be an extension of the public spaces.

Concept: Drawing upon the original design style of Phlip Hubert, the proposition for the re-design of Hotel Chelsea draws upon elements from the Queen Anne Revival and the Victorian Gothic Style.

The hotel will be a marriage of brutal-ism and romanticism, in efforts to cater to its clientèle of chic art dealers, models off duty, yuppies, and New Yorkers dreaming of their next European holiday.

Upon entering, guests will be swept into a fantasy of old-world New York, greeted with a flute of champagne, seduced by the aroma of fresh florals, and encased in a jewel box of marble.

At their leisure they will enjoy the on-site: wine vault, Food Piazza, and Guerlain Parfumerie. During the evening hours, guests can choose to relax and unwind in our tranquil suites or choose to make their way up to the rooftop, for a cocktail in our European inspired garden.

Concluding their getaway, guests will be chauffeured on to their next journey, only to dream of their return.

PARFUMERIE & FOOD PIAZZA Parfumerie: Situated at the far end of the food plaza, the parfumerie was created in partnership with Guerlain Beauty. As experiential stores are the new table stakes in metropolitan areas, designing the store in a highly experiential way was priority. The proposed design concept for the parfumerie was inspired by bird habitats. The wall and ceiling tiling representing the metal caging of the enclosure and perfume display platforms mimicking traditional bird cages. The elixirs housed on the wall represent the beakers through which domesticated birds seek hydration. The elixirs lend to the experiential component of the store and allow customers to craft their signature scent.

Food Piazza: Drawing inspiration from the Galleria Vittorio Emaniele II in Milan, the Food Piazza was conceived as a means to usher in European architecture to the hotel interior.

Taking lead from the cross shaped interior plan organically created ease of circulation and fluidity between spaces. The architectural structure created in the design process led to the conception of the rooftop space by translating the same cross shape into a landscape design.

garden destination with sweeping views of Lower Manhattan. Taking division cues from English gardens and the piazza structure below, the garden is mapped out to cater to approximately 200 occupants. Visitors may enjoy a cocktail at the central bar before finding their way to their table, situated atop a manicured patch of greenery.

Wine Vault: With a play on the old-world style of more is more, attention to finite details, and ornate ceiling design, the wine vault came to be. Roman Mosaics were compiled for the floor design to revitalize the art of craftsmanship. Decorative tiles were selected for the walls and ceiling in efforts to re-introduce this traditional design element in a more contemporary setting.

PRESIDENTIAL SUITE The elliptical entry gallery is a study in ancient Roman architecture. Taking cues from the oldworld elegance of Europe, often found in Upper Manhattan, and translating it into a trendy downtown locale lent itself to the use of an abundance of gold accents. Utilizing traditional materials and installing them in a fresh contemporary manner was pivotal to the design process. Jacquard was upholstered onto the bed frame and white silk wallpaper swept through the suite. Artwork was selected from artists that once resided in the original hotel as a means to preserve the history of the iconic site.
