Girthy gunman opens fire on Bronx street

By Dan Gesslein A girthy gunman was caught on surveillance video opening fire on a Bronx street near bystanders.

The NYPD released surveillance video of the shooting that took place at around 6 pm on November 10. The video shows the large gunman in a black hoodie and face mask repeatedly firing a hand-

gun outside the deli on West 170th Street, which is less than 4 blocks away from the 44th Precinct in Mount Eden.

Burglar roughs up elderly woman in her home for $100

By Dan Gesslein A Bronx burglar beat up an elderly woman inside her home for $100, the NYPD says.

At around 2:24 am on November 7, the NYPD says a suspect entered an apartment building via an unlocked door at the back of the building on Beck Street and Longwood Avenue. Investigators released surveillance video which shows the suspect skulking around the back of the building.

Cops say the suspect

then entered the bedroom of an 89-year-old woman. The burglar grabbed the elderly victim by her arm and threw her down on the bed demanding cash. The senior took $100 from her purse and handed it over to her attacker. He then fled through the same open back door.

The NYPD says the victim suffered pain and

bruising to her arm.

The suspect is described as a man in his 50s who is 6 feet tall and has a slim build.

By Dan Gesslein The NYPD is searching for a trio of Bronx bandits who robbed a Dunkin’ Donuts, 7-11, deli and more throughout Pelham Bay and Morris Park. In most of the cases the convenience store robbing twits made off with very little.

The NYPD has linked the group to 5 robberies throughout the formerly quiet neighborhoods of Pelham Bay and Morris Park. The first incident took place on October 26, when a man claiming to have a gun, robbed a deli at 3101 Westchester Avenue. The robber simulated a gun in his pocket, walked behind the counter and demanded money. He walked away with $100.

the thieves struck again up the road in Pelham Bay. At around 10:45 pm on October 23rd, the trio entered the 7-11 at 3220 Westchester Avenue. One of the group ran behind the counter and simulated a gun. He forced open the

cash register and took $1,425.

While he was hitting up the cash register, his accomplices were stealing singles out of a jar that was tied to the counter.

At around 5 pm on October 26, two of the

suspects entered the Dunkin’ Donuts at 2515 Boston Road. One of the men walked behind the counter, while his partner demanded that the clerk open the cash register. When the clerk refused, the bandit tried CONTINUED ON PAGE 7

unsuccessfully to open the register himself. The would-be robbers left empty handed.

Investigators said in this incident the robbers did not display or simulate having a gun.

The trio finally struck at 6 am on November 8.

The group entered E & D Parking Lot, located at 1855 East Tremont, just outside Parkchester.

One of the men entered the employee booth, while the accomplices waited outside.

The bandit displayed an object that appeared to be a long screwdriver. He pinned the employee up against the wall and threatened him with the object. He then removed the keys from three different cars that were on hooks inside the booth. The trio then fled without any money or stealing any of the cars parked on the lot.

Bronx Zoo Holiday Lights tradition just got sweeter

The Bronx Zoo’s Holiday Lights tradition just got even sweeter as the zoo’s “How Do You S’more” contest kicksoff.

The traditional s’more is of course made of chocolate and marshmallow sandwiched between two graham crackers, but there are an infinite number of ways to elevate the sweet snack. The zoo is calling for people to submit their gourmet s’more recipes at BronxZoo. com until November 20 when Holiday Lights officially opens to the public.

Gourmet versions of the classic snack can

be submitted online for a chance to win tickets to Holiday Lights. The three most creative, tasty, s’mores recipes will also be chosen as a featured s’more which will be available for Holiday Lights revelers to purchase for one week each.

Submit a recipe and a photo, share on social media using #SmoreToLove, and show the world how you s’more!

The Bronx Zoo’s Holiday Lights, a family-favorite holiday light experience, will open to the public on November 20 and run on select dates through January 10.

Tickets for Holiday Lights must be purchased in advance and are now available online.

This year’s experience will encompass a larger area of the zoo and be organized to accommodate social distancing.

With dozens more animal lanterns than last year, the zoo has created five geographically representative lantern safaris that include species from different regions of the world.

In addition to the wildlife lantern safaris and sprawling holiday illuminations, the new Luminous Garden will feature larger-than-life plants and animals unlike any other garden in New York including flowers, mushrooms, butterflies and other insects.

Entertainment will include ice carving demonstrations, costumed characters, stilt walkers, souvenirs, and seasonal treats. Of course, s’mores have been so popular, the event will have 12 fire pits where people can make their own

s’mores or try one of contest winners.

While celebrating the holiday season, all events and activities have been modified to meet all safety guidelines as directed by the State of New York. All guests over 3 years old are required to socially distance and wear face coverings, and all tickets are date-specific and must be purchased in advance online. Flowers bloom in November thanks to ‘Art on Concourse’

Flowers are blooming in several Bronx neighborhoods and it's not because of the unseasonably mild Autumn temperatures we've been experiencing, but a collaboration of artists of all ages, participating in the annual "Art on the Concourse" project.

The Art on the Concourse: A Virtual Block Party, an online event kicked off on November 12, that featured stories, performances and poetry by local residents

Fordham Bedford residents worked alongside local artists C.G. Esperanza, Melanie Gonzalez, Lady K Fever and Naomi Rag. The online program was presented in coordination with a public art walk, created by the artists and community members currently residing at several of Fordham Bedford-run building's, that provide housing to women and children and seniors.

On November 9, Cathleena Howie, a 15-year resident of Bedford Park, who is also an artist who goes by the name of "Lady

K Fever,” was spotted outside of Met Foods supermarket at East 198 Street and Bainbridge Avenue, as she painted the last of several flower-themed murals.

Besides the virtual art show, Howie said, "We're also creating a physical art walk that people can come and check this and check that. Howie, who teaches art to residents of Fordham Bedford-run buildings, also has newly created murals at East 194 Street and Bainbridge Avenue and another inside a park along Mosholu Parkway North in nearby Norwood.

Normally this is an annual gala at the Concourse House," Howie explained, "to raise money for the domestic violence shelter, the senior housing and they do lots of community services." The event was forced to go virtual due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Working with nearly a dozen children artists, Howie continued, “The whole thing this year is flowers.

ery works that now hang from the fence of the property. Large prints of photos taken by seniors hang from the fence at the other end of the block on Marion Avenue.

Howie's murals are her rendition of their art work, she concluded, "So I was being inspired, Charles is an actual photographer and he's an incredible artist, an incredible man and he's always around, so I put a portrait of him and kind of re-pourtraiting the neighborhood," she explains, celebrating "life and wisdom.”

Grisel Fernandez a resident of Servian Gardens, but not a participant in the project, stated as she admired Howie's new murals, "I think it's very good and then look at this over there," as she also points to the crochet work of the seniors.

Fernandez added, "I think it's fantastic... it is good for the neighborhood, because nowadays nobody's interested in doing anything positive.”

As several artists and assistants were displaying the artwork

along East 198 Street, "Jess," the associate curator at Fordham Bedford Community Services and curator at Concourse House, offered, "I've been working here for four years, so this year with the pandemic the seniors sadly, we've had a lot of losses and some of their biggest loves are arts and crafts and photography."

Unable to do their regular program, this year they went virtual.

According to Jess, artist Melanie Gonzalez taught photography to about 20 seniors at Servian Gardens and 40 to 50 photographs taken by the seniors of fellow residents as well as the landscape of the local community, were blown up and now hang outside the home.

Jess recalled, "During COVID while we were under lockdown, we made a newspaper of all the photographs and put it under their doors as a way for them to feel connected and now with our event, we thought it would be especially moving if we could really amplify their voices

and put it right here in front of the building.”

According to Jess, the crochet work was done by members of the Servian Gardens arts and crafts club, who worked on their flower art under quarantine. Howie then used their art to create her murals, Jess added, "There being celebrated by Lady K Fever on the murals as sort of a thank you and nod to them.”

Local officials honor veterans at Woodlawn Cemetery

Unlike years past, in the year of our lord 2020, the 25 or so in attendance wore face masks, remained socially distant and plenty of hand sanitizer was available.

The men placed a wreath at the foot of the

monument, a plaque embedded in the bedrock that reads in part, "In memory of the heroic men who gave their lives in noble sacrifice.”

The plaque ends with a passage from the bible, that says, "He maketh wars to cease." The United States suffered 116,516 casualties and 320,000 more were left sick or wounded.

Woodlawn Cemetery has so far identified 6,500 soldiers whose final resting place is at Woodlawn and they have served in every American conflict since the War of 1812.

Those buried at Woodlawn include Civil War hero David Glasgow Farragut, the first Admiral of the United States Navy; Edward Knox, a member of the 15th New York Light Artillery, who was awarded the Medal of

Honor for his bravery at the Battle of Gettysburg and Lucy Bainbridge, a nurse during the Civil War who cared for wounded soldiers of the Union Army on the front lines in Virginia.

According to Bronx Historian Lloyd Ultan, one standing on "Central Avenue" inside of the cemetery and facing east, would be overlooking the actual battlefield of "The Battle of Gun Hill," the Revolutionary War battle that took place on January 25, 1777. On that day freedom fighters carried a cannon up "Gun Hill" and were able to push Brit-

ish troops east back into Queens.

The Woodlawn Cemetery & Conservancy is open to the public and often hosts walking tours and other events, and is located at 4199 Webster Avenue.

De-Stressing daily rituals when a loved one has dementia or Alzheimer’s

By Jane Sadowsky-Emmerth, RN, Partners in Care, an affiliate of VNSNY Anyone who has a relationship with someone suffering from Dementia or Alzheimer’s knows that even the simplest tasks in daily life can become true challenges—for both caregivers and the family members themselves.

Something as innocent as making and enjoying a morning cup of coffee or tea can turn into an exhausting and frustrating experience—especially with challenges like COVID-19 causing additional stress. Coping is difficult enough on good days, we don’t need the little joys of life to become a burden too.

As a registered nurse and clinical case manager at Partners in Care, a licensed home care agency affiliated with the Visiting Nurse Service of New York, I know there are countless potential obstacles that can make even daily rituals extremely difficult for caregivers. My colleagues and I have come up with some ideas for communicating that we hope will help caregivers maintain patience and a sense of calm when they are reaching

their breaking point.

Setting yourself up for success as much as possible will create a more positive and productive environment for both you and your suffering loved one alike.

Accentuate the Familiar

Be sure to continually remind your family member of the person, place and time. Say “I’m…, we have breakfast together every day, remember we laughed about my new mask.”

This helps a person with dementia feel grounded in what they know and allows them to feel safe with that knowledge for however long they can.

Observation is Key As noted in the tip above, familiarity can help lessen the frustrating aspects of dementia, when the patient can grasp onto something being told to them or something they can come to expect. Notice

what their favorite foods and drinks are, how they take their coffee.

Do they like variety in day-to-day meals, or do they like consistency?

Also try to notice which times of day they seem to be more clear or confused, and adjust your caretaking accordingly.

If you know they are most disoriented during the morning, know you will need to be more repetitive and patient.

Try New Conversation Tactics Since conversations with dementia patients can repeat and tend to loop around again and again, try to listen carefully and then reword the question or emphasize a different point to help keep the communications flowing.

Re-clarifying and altering the question slightly can go a long way. Also, though it is tempting when conversing with someone with dementia to fill every silence, sometimes you do have to give the person some time to think before they respond.

Involve the Patient Instead of calling all of the shots with simple tasks like getting

dressed and ready for the day, involving your loved one can help foster engagement and self-respect. You can make suggestions—“It’s hot outside today, so let’s wear something with short sleeves”—but let them choose which short-sleeve shirt. You might also have a selection of cloth masks to protect against COVID-19, and ask which one your loved one wants to wear. Try this when going grocery shopping too: ask which flavor or which brand of a product they think you should buy. Allowing them to have input in small decisions may allow them to feel a little bit of the independence they have lost again.

Be Mindful of Your Reactions Even if your loved one is suffering from a very severe form of dementia, they will still react to you based on your tone of voice and/ or facial expression. Be mindful of not letting

your frustration show.

It is difficult, but take a deep breath, put a smile on, and keep your tone positive. It can make a world of difference.

Know When to Take a Break

Sometimes there is nothing left to do but simply step away for a short while. This is one of the most important things you can do to take care of yourself as a caregiver. If things have become aggressive or simply too overwhelming, walk away for a few minutes (as long as it is safe). Give yourself some time to collect yourself and try to return with a different facial expression.

November is Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month

By Dr. Jennifer Chuy, medical oncologist at Montefiore Health System and assistant professor, Medicine, Albert Einstein College of Medicine As our nation mourned the passing of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, another legend, Jeopardy host Alex Trebek also recently succumbed to pancreatic cancer this month.

Pancreatic cancer is the ninth most common cancer in men and the eighth most common cancer in women in the United States. More than 57,000 people will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer this year in the United States. In New York alone, 3,700 people are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer each year and 2,900 people will die of the disease annually. Despite advances in treatment, five-year survival rates remain at 9%.

What is the pancreas?

The pancreas is an organ located behind the stomach. It releases enzymes to help digest food and produces hormones, such as insulin to control sugar levels in the blood.

What causes pancreatic cancer?

Risk factors for pancreatic cancer include: -smoking

What steps can you take to protect yourself and loved ones?

Stop smoking and lead a healthy lifestyle with a diet low in fat and engage in regular physical activity.

Pancreatic cancer is often difficult to diagnose because signs and symptoms tend to be nonspecific and a routine physical exam and blood work may not detect the condition early on. You should call your doctor if you have non intentional weight loss, persistent abdominal or worsening abdominal pain that radiates to the back, jaundice (yellowing of the eyes and/or skin), dark-colored urine, light-colored stools, new onset diabetes, unusual bloating, or new onset diarrhea, especially with fatty foods. Your doctor can order a blood test or scan and make a referral to a gastroenterologist to see if you need further evaluation.

In a small group of people, immunotherapy and targeted therapy may also be an option. It is important to find a cancer center where care is coordinated closely by a team of providers who specialize in the treatment of pancreatic cancer.

Clinical trials are an important way to provide access to new and promising treatments that may not yet be available to the rest of the general population.

This is especially important for pancreatic cancer where we are in desperate need for more effective therapies.

A tale of two pizzerias During these pandemic times there is nothing like hunkering down with our favorite comfort foods. Here are a couple of suggestions…

LOUIE & ERNIE’S STILL MAKES A GREAT PIZZA!

I had not been to Louie & Ernie’s Pizza on Crosby Ave. in the Bronx for a few years. It came up during a recent discussion with friends, then it became a craving. I decided to make the journey down from my Westchester haunts. So glad I did!

Little has changed here over the years including the restaurant’s old neighborhood brick façade. You could see the pizza man preparing a pie thru the window.

Inside there were a few spaced tables. Pizza takeout boxes were piled high towards the rear of the dining room ready for the daily rush. There was a constant buzz of customers coming in and out for pick-up. On the wall was a plaque recognizing Louie & Ernie’s for its 60 years in business. The shop originally opened in 1959.

Scored a small window table and ordered a slice of regular cheese pie with a helping of their signature lump fennel sausage on top, and a broccoli rabe calzone. It was the oldtime religion. Great flavor!

Memories of my years in the Bronx came rushing back to me. Took half the calzone home snacking.

Wanted to order more but

decided I would be better off returning with friends sometime soon and share more of the offerings.

Looking forward to trying their Chicken Parm Calzone, Meatball Pie, Onion Pie, and White Pie, with extra toppings, of course.

The phone rings incessantly, and take-out orders fly out the door. At peak times, the atmosphere can seem chaotic, but the crew

gets the job done.

Some of the current crew have been working here for 25 years. John Ruffolo refers to his shop as the ‘heartbeat of Pelham’. However, the flavors emanating from this ‘neighborhood’ pizzeria now draws followers from throughout the metro area.

Pelham Pizzeria has consistently made the ‘101 Best Pizzerias in the US’ rankings on The Daily Meal national website. It has received honorable mentions in Westchester Magazine, and raves from the community at large.

They draw legions of followers every day, 7 days a week.

A Little History: “Pelham Pizza opened its doors in May of 1978.

Originally, the restaurant was jointly owned and managed by two brothers from Italy: Luigi ‘Gino’ and Ettore ‘John’ Ruffolo.

In 1988 ,John passed away and Gino ran the pizzeria as the sole proprietor until he passed away in 2009.

Gino’s son-in-law Pino Mancini joined the business in 1997 and now manages the business with Gino’s son John and wife Rose.”

The display case at the counter beckons with its fresh baked pizzas by the slice: Sausage Pie with the house signature lumps of tasty sausage; Spinach Pie, White Pizza, and Chicken Cutlet Pie. According to the latest Covid mandate issued by Gov. Cuomo and Mayor DeBlasio, all restaurants and bars in New York must close by 10 p.m. due to a surge in coronavirus cases. The food service industry is concerned, of course. Hopefully, we will not fall too far backwards.

Fight Club Super Spreader?

NYC Sheriff shuts Bronx ‘Fight Club’

By David Greene Members of the New York City Sheriff's Department shut down an illegal "fight club" type event as a crowd of over 200 jammed into a private warehouse. Video from the event shows many guests not wearing masks and the gathering may have been a 'super spreader' type event for the coronavirus.

The sheriff's office reported that deputy sheriffs discovered the event, billed as the "Rumble in The Bronx" event at 347 - 351 Coster Street, at 11:15 p.m., on Saturday, November 14.

Video of the broadcasted event shows gloved fighters slugging it out as the mostly unmasked crowd watches from outside a chain-linked fence.

The raid prompted the

sheriff to Tweet, "200+ people, violation of emergency orders, illegal combat, no liquor license." The sheriff added that two loaded firearms were recovered as well as illegal liquor, hookah pipes and small amounts of marijuana.

Ten organizers were charged with multiple crimes.

es $15,000 in fines for breaking social-distancing orders for large gatherings, illegal alcohol sales and hosting unsanctioned boxing matches. The still-unidentified Bronxite was issued a desk appearance ticket, as were his nine staff members.

The raid comes on the heels of another gathering busted up by deputies on November 7, at 170 West 233 Street, where over 125 people thought they would dance the night away,

but instead were ordered into the cold. An illegal Halloween party shut down by deputies on Seabury Avenue, had drawn a crowd of 557 people.

The NYC Sheriff's Department has reported at least one such raid a week since March when the first social distancing guidelines went into effect, the gathering's will likely continue as new COVID restrictions have gone into effect, including restaurants and bars now closing at 10 pm.
