The NYPD is searching for these two men in connection with the assault and robbery of a woman outside a Bronx motel.

Man killed, woman critical after early morning cemetery crash

By David Greene One man is dead, and a woman remains in critical condition after a vehicle collided with a tree along Jerome Avenue, outside of the Woodlawn Cemetery.

Police officers from the 50th Precinct were called to a long stretch of roadway on Jerome Avenue, between Bainbridge Avenue and East 233 Street on the Norwood – Woodlawn Heights border, after a 911 call at 3:20 a.m. on November 12.

A police official stated at the time, “A preliminary investigation determined that an unidentified male operating a 2022 Honda Odyssey was traveling northbound on Jerome (Avenue) when he failed to navigate the roadway and struck a tree.”

Police later identified the victim as Jonathan Ramos-Robles, 30, of nearby Dekalb Avenue.

Officials say a 42-yearold woman remains in critical condition at St. Barnabas Hospital.

Members of the NYPD’s Crash Investigation Squad continue to investigate the cause of the crash.

By David Greene A stray cat that was stuck on the roof of a Briggs Avenue home for several days was saved by a volunteer after several attempts during the week by residents and fire department officials had failed.

Residents say the home at 2761 Briggs Avenue, between East 196 Street and East 197 Street in Fordham Manor section had been attracting crowds all week.

The crowd would stare up at the second-floor ledge of the three-family home where

the cat had been stuck.

Witnesses reported that fire officials were called to the home, but they were unable to reach the cat with a ladder from the street. A woman who said that she had provided food and water for the trapped cat and

other strays on the block, explained, “We’ve been trying to get him for four or five days.”

The woman, who declined to be identified, said she believed the cat entered an open door of a home at 2759 Briggs and made it to the third floor of that home when it apparently got “spooked” and went out an open window and jumped to the second-floor roof of an adjacent home.

A second unidentified woman then joined the conversation, adding, “That makes more sense because this door stays open, and she went in there and walked up the stairs… how’s she going to jump all the way up there.”

The cat was eventually saved by volunteer John Debacker, vice president of Long Island Cat and Kitten Solution, who was allowed into the home by a resident

and with a ladder, was able to eventually coach the cat into an open window and then trapped in the bathroom and caged. A task once performed by the former Center for Animal Care and Control, now called Animal Care Centers of New York City (ACC), which recently stopped accepting stray dogs because their facility is filled to capacity.

The rescued cat enjoyed his first meal after several days on the roof of a Briggs Avenue home before it was rescued.

ACC no longer responds to such calls, he replied, “They don’t have any staff.” He said of the rescue, “It took about a half hour to an hour, yeah they let me inside, I climbed up on the roof and we got an eight-foot ladder, and we climbed up and scared her inside.”

The cat, now crying from inside its cage, was taken back outside and released

once again onto the street because Debacker explained it was a “feral cat.”

It immediately ran under a parked car for safety. The unidentified woman then gave the cat a plate of food which it quickly ate.

In May the city broke ground on a $92 million ACC at 2050 Baychester Avenue. The 50,000-foot facility will be able to house 140 cats, 70 dogs and 30 rabbits. It is expected to

One Democratic source told THE CITY that Velázquez harmed her chances by focusing almost entirely on turning out voters who already backed her while largely ignoring others on the fence or in neighborhoods like Country Club and Throggs Neck where she was less popular.

Velázquez, who easily won her primary, had banked on support from the Carpenter’s Union — whose political director previously told THE CITY “Jesus Christ could have come in for an interview and we’d still pick Marjorie”— and other labor groups, including the Hotel Trades Council, that rallied behind her after her Bruckner vote that ensured jobs for union members.

“I think the unions are helpful because they provide manpower. They provide boots on the ground to give out literature. They provide financial support through independent expenditures,” former Councilmember Jimmy Vacca, who represented the district from 2006 to 2017, told THE CITY. “But, you know, I ran three times. And I don't remember anyone ever telling me ‘Jimmy, my union told me to vote for you.’”

Rather, Vacca continued, “my residents say to me, ‘We're gonna vote for you be-

Vacca endorsed Velázquez in 2021 but withdrew his support for this year after her vote for the Bruckner rezoning.

“Another big loser is the Bronx Democratic County organization,” Eli Valentin, founder of the Institute of Latino Politics and Policy, told THE CITY. “This is where a county organization has to step in to help one of their own. At the end of the day would it have made a difference? I don’t know. But I don’t think this is a good result for the Democratic Party in The Bronx.”

The Bronx Democratic Party did not immediately respond to a request for comment from THE CITY, but in a video recorded by the Bronx Times, executive director Ariana Collado told supporters at what was supposed to be a Velázquez victory party on election night that the loss was “a wake up call.”

“We knew this race wasn’t gonna be easy and the results were not what we expected, but we want to thank you. I think this is a wake-up call for what’s expected to be next year,” said Collado. “And this means we need to organize.

We need to work together.

This does not mean that we give up.”

A quarter mile away outside of the Bronx Library Center on East Kingsbridge Road, a flyer was spotted on Sunday, November 5, stating, “Israel is committing genocide” along with the latest death toll provided by the Palestinian Authority.

Meanwhile, someone produced two giant “missing” flyers for the Dove of Peace that was placed at a construction site at East Tremont Avenue in Parkchester.

The flyer states, “Missing Dove of Peace”, and “Reward if found alive.”

Sadly, within days of the peace posters' appearance, someone attempted to tear the posters down but were mostly unsuccessful.

Mural imagines life without gun violence NYC Health + Hospitals and the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs unveiled a new mural at NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln about gun violence.

The artist, Fernando “Ski” Romero, developed the mural with youth who participate in the gun violence interruption initiative Guns Down, Life Up at Lincoln Hospital. The ¡Oye! Group developed a workshop where participants used disposable cameras to capture their experience living in the South Bronx, and the artist incorporated those images into the final mural using silkscreen and collage. The mural features participants and staff from Guns Down, Life Up and is located along the hallways where the program meets, and it includes QR codes with their videos, poems, and artwork.

The new mural, United, is one of the projects planned with ¡Oye! Group and Modesto “Flako” Jimenez, the 2022-23 NYC Public Artist in Residence who has been embedded in the health system’s community and gun violence interruption programs over the past year. His residency is a program of the health system’s Arts in Medicine department, and funding for the residency is provided by NYC Health + Hospitals, the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, and the Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund.

To break the cycle of violence, the health system’s hospital-based intervention pairs

credible messengers – people who have experienced gun violence and live in the community – with doctors, social workers, and other clinical staff who treat patients at the bedside. NYC Health + Hospitals’ Violence Interruption Programs also provide conflict mediation, prevention and youth empowerment, and community outreach and mobilization services in response to community and gun violence. Flako has spent the past year meeting with hospital-based violence interruption staff at NYC Health + Hospitals facilities and in the community, followed by months of creative workshops with youth participating in Guns Down, Life Up, the gun violence interruption program at NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln.

In addition to the new mural, the results of the yearlong residency include a modern adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet written and performed by participants of Guns Down, Life Up; a monthlong gallery exhibit of art and photography; and a showcase at Carnegie Hall’s Resnick Education Wing with interactive painting, poetry readings, a theater performance, and a brief documentary about Flako’s residency with NYC Health + Hospitals.

Romeo and Juliet, a modern adaptation: Over a period of six weeks, participants of Guns Down, Life Up partici-

pated in workshops to develop a modern adaptation and performance of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

Participants adapted the play by adding street slang and modern English. They considered the kind of justice they would like to see in their community and how to represent this through a modern, Bronx adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. They were introduced to the rudiments of the theater-making process and developed skills in acting, memorization, adaptation, staging, and performance while creating dynamic new characters based on Shakespeare’s plays.

The performance was on Friday, August 25 and was free and open to the public.

Gallery exhibit: A gallery

exhibit of photography, film, poetry, and other creations by participants of Guns Down, Life Up was on display at Materials for the Arts in Queens from August 17 to September 12. The exhibit showcased the visual interpretations of the adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, giving visitors a glimpse into their process using found objects, video confessionals, drawings, sculptures, and photography. Materials for the Arts, a program of the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, is New York City’s premier creative reuse center, which provides arts nonprofits, public schools and City agencies with access to a vast range of free materials and supplies. The exhibit was free and open to the public.
