Drivers caught on video behind the wheels of stolen school buses

SMILE! Young suspects who took a trio of school buses for a joy ride from a Bronx bus depot were caught on camera driving the stolen buses. Police released the new video in an attempt to catch the thieves.

Cops said thieves broke into the buses at the depot on Blondell Avenue off of Westchester Square at around midnight on Tuesday. They drove off with three short buses that

the company said were spares and not in service.

Once the crooks got behind the wheel and drove the buses through the front gate and off the lot, cameras in each of the buses activated capturing the drivers in action.

According to published reports, one of the buses was recovered in front of a school in Crotona Park.

Another of the stolen buses was seen on the vehicle’s GPS

as tracing to Springfield Gardens, Queens.

New York Cit y is back with more jobs than ever

By Mayor Eric Adams Less than two years ago, I was sworn in as the 110th mayor of New York City.

Our city was still reeling from the devastation of a global pandemic. Commercial neighborhoods and office buildings were deserted. Headlines questioned the future of New York City.

But I knew then what every New Yorker has always known: this city would be back.

And right now, that comeback is official: We have regained the nearly one million private sector jobs that were lost during COVID-19, and New York City has more total jobs than EVER before in our city’s history, totaling 4,709,400 million jobs.

Not just private sector jobs. Total jobs. And more than 280,500 of those jobs were created since the beginning of this administration.

This is more than just a recovery, and I am proud to say we got there ahead of schedule.

Before we took office, experts were projecting the city wouldn’t regain pre-pandemic job levels until 2025, but this is the “Get Stuff Done” administration. And we got it done in 22 months.

Our plan was straightforward: Protect public safety, invest in public spaces, and support working people, or as we have been calling it, the “Triangle Offense.”

As I have said for so

long, public safety is the prerequisite to prosperity. It is what I campaigned on, what I was elected to do, and what we have delivered for New Yorkers.

That is why we took immediate action and invested $171 million in our Subway Safety Plan; took action on gun violence, car theft, and retail crime; and boost-

ed enforcement of quality of life and criminal offenses alike.

We are also delivering billions into the pockets of working people across the city, but when it comes to lifting up working people, we are going to go even further.

Too many people have been left out of this recovery. Black unemployment is too high. Our wealth gap is too wide. Equity re-

mains a serious issue in communities of color across the board.

We must build a fairer, more inclusive economy. And we are going to start with a “Working People’s Tour” of the five boroughs — one that highlights the New Yorkers powering our recovery, introduces new economic solutions, and allows us to hear directly from those who are still lacking access to good jobs. We will create new interventions to help boost growth and build on-ramps to opportunity across the five boroughs because all New Yorkers must share in our city’s prosperity, no matter what line of work they are in or what borough they hail from.

New York City has a history of coming back stronger no matter how tough things get. Going forward, we are going to make sure that every New Yorker can share in our city’s legendary opportunity and prosperity as well.

Speaker Claudia De La Cruz, the co-director of The People’s Forum, said of Torres, “The only people he represents are the people he’s meeting in Washington DC right now are the Zionists and the real estate moguls.

De La Cruz added, “We are here to say that it is a shame that this man stands in Congress and needs to spit out the Bronx from his mouth. He is a shame to the Bronxites. He is a shame to the Puerto Rican community.”

Hip Hop Museum boosts housing A host of elected officials, hip-hop luminaries and community leaders joined L+M Development Partners, Type A Projects, BronxWorks, and The Hip Hop Museum for a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of the housing and public space components at phase one of Bronx Point, the much-anticipated $349 million mixed-use development on the Harlem River waterfront in the South Bronx.

The event marked the official opening of 542 new housing units at the project – which was co-developed by L+M and Type A – as well as 2.8 acres of a brand new waterfront public

park and esplanade open to the public. In addition to the housing, open space, and engaging retail, Bronx Point will be the future home of The Hip Hop Museum, the world’s premiere

institution chronicling the history and impact of hip-hop, as the Bronx-born genre celebrates its 50th birthday this year. Bronx Point will also feature an early childhood space run by BronxWorks, one of New York City’s most effective and respected non-profit organizations whose mission is to help individuals and families improve their economic and social well-being.

By Dan Gesslein A Bronx pizza shop was delivering more than just pies. Feds seized almost $4 million dollars worth of drugs including cocaine and fentanyl when they raided the Soundview slice shop that was across the street from a school.

Federal law enforcement officers and prosecutors announced the arrest of three people in connection with Mexzzarella Pizza on Soundview Avenue across from PS 69. Authorities said they observed the defendants coming and going with large heavy bags.

After such a pickup, cops made a car stop of one of the defendants which led to the seizure of five kilos of cocaine. This then led to a search of the pizza shop where cops and DEA officers recovered 42 kilos of cocaine, one kilogram of heroin/fentanyl, 1,000 glassine envelopes containing suspected oxycodone and fentanyl, large rocks of cocaine, a kilo press, and approximately $40,000 from the basement. They also recovered 100 vials of suspected crack cocaine. Prosecutors said the crack vials were stored near the counter for easy sales or to provide samples to customers.

“This drug trafficking organization was cooking up more than pizza in the

Bronx,” said DEA Special Agent in Charge Frank Tarentino. “The large stash of cocaine found in the basement of Mexzzarella Pizza is very significant because it had the potential to supply drug networks throughout the Northeast.

“Cocaine is being laced with fentanyl, which is contributing to poisonings and unnecessary deaths in New York and across the country,” Tarentino said. “ As evident in this investigation, DEA and our law enforcement partners are continuously working together to identify and arrest drug traffickers responsible for inflicting the most harm on our communities.”

During a press conference for the multi-agency investigation, prosecutors announced the arrests of Gaudencio Rosendo Perez, Zulema Cardenas Espinoza and Alexander Samboy.

Each was charged with operating as a major trafficker and criminal posession of a controlled substance in the

first and third degrees.

Special Narcotics Prosecutor Bridget G. Brennan said, “This highly profitable Bronx based narcotics operation appeared to operate as a wholesaler and distributor of cocaine and fentanyl laced products and was advertised as an ‘inexpensive’ Mexican pizza spot. Investigators recovered cocaine, crack and fentanyl in bags, vials and kilo sized portions from Mexzzarella in the Soundview section. Our office will continue to work with our federal, state and

local enforcement partners to stem the distribution of lethal drugs that claimed the lives of a record high number of people in our city last year.”

NYPD Commissioner Edward A. Caban said, “This successful narcotics investigation resulted in the shutting down of a major drug trafficking organization in the Bronx and is indicative of how the NYPD and our law enforcement partners work tirelessly to identify and arrest anyone who endangers our communities in

this way. We will keep using our collective resources to aggressively pursue these criminals to the fullest extent of the law.”

The investigation was conducted by following an investigation by DEA Group D-43, along with New York City Office of the Special Narcotics Prosecutor, NYPD, NYSP, and Rockland County District Attorney’s Office.

The investigation was also assisted by the New York/ New Jersey Port Authority Police Department.

According to a recent study, by 2050 approximately 1.3 billion people around the world will have diabetes. Our goal at Montefiore is to work together to raise awareness about the condition and help our community to manage and prevent diabetes and its complications.

One such complication is a diabetic foot ulcer (DFU), which is an open wound that can be located anywhere on the foot, but most commonly is seen on the bottom or side of the foot. These areas are the most frequently affected as they are exposed to greater pressures from body weight when walking, especially when shoes are too tight.

There are many factors that can contribute to the formation of a diabetic foot ulcer. One of the most common is the loss of sensation in the feet, known as “neuropathy,” which occurs when nerves are damaged by diabetes. People can develop neuropathy even during the pre-diabetes stage.

Other common causes of diabetic foot ulcers include poor circulation and peripheral arterial disease (PAD), which causes poor blood flow to different parts of the body. Many patients with diabetes will have both neuropathy and PAD. When blood glucose levels

are elevated (also known has hyperglycemia), this can damage the body, including nerves, which can lead to patients being unable to feel physical trauma to their feet. This can also cause damage to blood vessels, leading to poor circulation and poor wound healing, which is frequently seen in patients with diabetes. This is why it is important to monitor your blood sugar levels regularly, whether that be with finger sticks or with a continuous glucose monitor.

We recommend that you see your diabetes provider every three months, so that they may closely monitor your diabetes by reviewing your blood glucose readings, checking a Hemoglobin A1c test and making any necessary changes in your treatment plan.

How can we prevent a diabetic foot ulcer?

People with poorly controlled

diabetes and diabetic foot ulcers are more susceptible to longterm consequences, including

infections and amputations. So, it’s important to take action to help prevent the development of diabetic foot ulcers. Patients can check their feet daily for damage that could lead to a diabetic foot ulcer. This includes looking for any injuries or scratches, assessing your nails, or new cuts that you did not sense. If unable to look at your own feet you should ask someone else to check your feet for any injuries, such as a family member or friend. Alternatively, you can use a mirror to observe the bottom of your foot.

Properly fitted shoes are essential in the prevention of diabetic foot ulcers. You can check with your insurance company to see if they provide coverage for orthopedic support or diabetic shoes. Minimizing the possibility of injury by not walking around the house barefoot can also help. Taking your own equipment to nail salons, cutting your own nails, and not

cutting your cuticles can also mitigate the risk of getting a diabetic foot ulcer. Controlling blood glucose levels and avoiding smoking can help patients prevent complications that may make them more susceptible to diabetic foot ulcers. Finally, it is critical that patients with diabetes have a health care provider as a partner to maintain healthy feet and to rapidly provide care if ulcers develop.

What are we doing in the Bronx?

At Montefiore, the Departments of Medicine and Vascular Surgery are partnering to establish a limb preservation program to prevent amputations. With early intervention, the need for an amputation can be prevented in patients with diabetic foot ulcers.

We are also getting involved in the community by

co-hosting a Diabetic Foot Ulcer Expo with Assemblyman Anthony Benedetto on November 16th from 11am2pm at the Dreiser Loop Community Center. This event includes a town hall to connect with the community, followed by vendor tables representing diabetes technology, shoe companies, health insurance and nutrition.

The vibrant flavors and hospitality of Greece are served with kefi (gusto) at Anasa Greek Kitchen, the newly revamped Mediterranean restaurant on Central Ave., White Plains.

Restaurant veterans Bobby Tsakarakis and Stevia Farmakopoulos took over the former Niko’s Greek Taverna and imbued it with a refreshing airy and flowery décor.

A good Greek meal is a must for me from time to time, and Anasa, which refers to ‘the breath of life’, surpassed our expectations. Bobby and Stevia, who originally hail from Lesvos and Kefalonia in Greece respectively are all over the room engaging with customers. The choices on the menu sounded so

tempting, and Bobby, who is the talented self-taught chef and artist, helped us decide on our first meal here.

The waiter brought us an ample platter of tasty, warmed pita bread with fresh hummus for dipping.

An extraordinary starter was a hot meze platter of Chargrilled Octopus served with olive oil and lemon. The herbal flavors exploded in your mouth.

Followed with their colorful Horiatiki Salad loaded with tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers, onions, olives, and feta cheese, sprinkled with oregano, olive oil and vinegar dressing. Fresh and delightful!
