Man gets 12 years for sexually assaulting child in broad daylight

A man, who sexually assaulted a girl walking home from a local store in broad daylight, will spend the next 12 years in prison, prosecutors say.

Malcolm Lugo, 24, pled guilty to sexually assaulting a 12-yearold girl in a Mount Eden alleyway four years ago. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison for the crime which shocked the community.

“The defendant followed a 12-year-old girl, who was on her

way back home from a store, and sexually assaulted her in broad daylight. He also terrified the child by threatening to kill her and her family. We hope today’s sentence brings some solace to the victim and her family,” said Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark.

Lugo, 24, last of

Bronxwood Avenue, was sentenced to 12 years in prison and 20 years post-release supervision by Bronx Supreme Court Justice James McCarty. The defendant will also be required to register as a sex offender upon his release from incarceration. The defendant pleaded guilty to first-degree Criminal Sexual Act on March 12, 2021.

According to the investigation, at 11:00 a.m. on August 13, 2017, near 1686 Weeks

Avenue, the victim was returning from a store when the defendant spotted her and followed her for a block.

Video surveillance shows Lugo grabbing the victim from behind and dragging her into an alley.

Lugo pressed what the victim believed to be a gun to her head and threatened to kill her. The defendant then sexually assaulted the victim and engaged in oral sexual conduct.

Before fleeing the scene, the defendant

told the victim he knew where her family was and threatened to kill them. When the child returned home, she told her mother what had happened and she called 911.

Surveillance videos show the defendant changing and throwing away his clothes after the incident, and at several friends’ houses across the city, in an attempt to evade authorities.

Lugo fled to Massachusetts and was arrested after a six-week manhunt.

Honored were local residents: Rachel Miller Bradshaw, Myrna Calderon, Kpoto Kpana, Angela Salazar and Elaine Grays Watts, who were all presented with New York State Assembly Proclamations recognizing their individual achievements.

Besides the proclamation, awardees were also presented with a bouquet of roses.

Pichardo was joined at the event by local officials Fernando Cabrera, the current New York City Councilman (14 C.D.) and current candidate for Bronx Borough President as well as attorney Angel Cruz, who is currently running for Bronx Civil Court Judge.

The event was originally scheduled for May 8, but the event was postponed due to rain.

Mystery deepens over state trooper raid of Bronx home

By David Greene After a week of inquiries to the Harrison Police Department, officials have announced that a Morris Park man has been apprehended and charged in an April 1st burglary of a home in Harrison, N.Y., and the suspects subsequent arrest on May 7 in the Bronx.

In the statement issued on May 13th by Harrison Police that read in part, "Following a month-long investigation, Harrison Police have charged a Bronx man with breaking into

ment continued, "Harrison Police responded to a report that an unknown male had entered a residence through a rear window while the home was occupied. After being confronted by the nanny, the man fled out the front door and left in a vehicle.”

Harrison Police eventually identified the vehicle and

tracked it to Colden Avenue in the Bronx and watched the block for several hours. One eyewitness reported that as the suspect attempted to leave the area, eight uniformed and plain clothes police officers converged on the suspect’s black BMW. Several residents of the quiet street watched as police took the man into

custody at Colden Avenue near Rhinelander Avenue at 1 p.m. on May 7. Police then impounded the BMW before executing a search warrant at a three-family home at 1828 Colden Avenue.

Harrison Police say they were assisted by members of the New York State Police and members of the Westchester County District Attorney's office.

Police arrested Emiljian Drekaj, 27, who was charged with burglary in the 2nd degree, a felony.

Officials say Drekaj is currently being held at the Westchester County Jail and is being held on $25,000 cash bail or $50,000 bond.

The Harrison Police statement added, "Search warrants were executed on the suspect’s vehicles

and his residence, where evidence related to the burglary was seized.”

Harrison Police did not immediately respond to follow up questions emailed on Monday, May 17, regarding reports from a witness that Drekaj attempted to flee police as well as questions about the apparent bullet hole in the side of Drekaj's BMW.

Dollar store robbed at knife point

Cops are looking for the man who robbed a Bronx Family Dollar store at knifepoint.

At around 4:46 pm on May 3, a man walked into Family Dollar store on Boston Road in Morrisania. Cops say the man walked behind

the counter while the cashier was waiting on a customer. As the cashier opened her cash drawer, the man displayed a knife and began

At around 11:45 am on April 28, the 81-year-old had gotten into a verbal dispute with a 20-year-old man in front of 1970 Gildersleeve Avenue. The two were arguing over a parking spot on the Soundview street when the 20 year old pushed the elderly man to the ground. He then punched the senior

short black hair and was last seen wearing a blue face mask, a gray sweatshirt, blue jeans and white sneakers.

decade, this annual event has offered free cervical and breast cancer screening to women ages 21 to 64 who have limited or no health insurance.

More Than Just Testing Women who’ve attended See, Test & Treat in the past say it’s more than just a place to get tested. It’s a support system of caring providers and community resources. It’s a sisterhood of women who know, from personal experience, why it’s important to get screened for breast and cervical cancers. Some are cancer survivors and want to make sure they stay healthy, others come in honor of a loved one who has survived or been lost to breast or cervical cancer. Transformation of social work practice

By Collina D. Cooke, LMSW, PhC For social workers, the last year plus responding to the coronavirus pandemic has encompassed work that provides support to those dealing with the devastation of loss. This includes the loss of loved ones, jobs, and financial instability, in addition to reimagining self-imposed isolation.

Feeling constant fear to the point where one may become sick, coupled with being isolated from friends and family, has caused an increase in

the need for social work services surrounding psychological well-being, especially in communities in the Bronx, the borough hit hardest by the pandemic.

Our experience of Coronavirus (COVID-19) extended to threats of our physical health, mental health and spiritual well-being. These threats to wholeness affected the way we understand anxiety and depression and informed decisions about our clients.

In April of 2020, The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) released a Social Justice Brief which highlighted the devastating impacts

that coronavirus has had on marginalized and vulnerable populations. The brief reported that “vulnerable and marginalized populations are at very high risk for bearing the brunt of the pandemic.”

Families are grieving the loss of loved ones, experiencing food insecurity, loss of health benefits due to job loss, and undergoing crippling financial strain.

It is the job of social workers to provide innumerable services to those in need making the professionalization of help essential as we respond to the pandemic.

When the pandemic first hit, we were met with a new challenge: the need for mental health services skyrocketed, but we couldn’t meet any of our patients in person.

As an industry and as a company, we had to get innovative in how we supported our members.

Social workers quickly pivoted to virtual sessions via telehealth software, Zoom or phone calls. At EmblemHealth, we launched the Peace of Mind initiative, where we called thousands of members and asked one simple question: “How are you doing?” The traumatic effects of the pandemic pushed the social work field to adapt to new virtual methods so that the continuity of care to patients would not be broken. Telemental health allowed our clients to honor the stay at home mandates as they received therapeutic ser-

vices that were perhaps inaccessible in the past.

Further, social workers have been working to connect those in need to available community resources such as food panties, domestic violence shelters, mental health services, and addiction services. In my experience, demand is increasing so rapidly for these life-saving services that there are not enough resources to meet the needs. Counseling centers are at capacity and practitioners are overwhelmed with patients.

Consumer need is beginning to surpass the available community resources. Additional funding is necessary to ensure that resources are available for those impacted by the pandemic. However, despite the challenges created by pandemic responses, social workers have remained dedicated to supporting communities through advocacy, counseling, and referrals. We remain dedicated to ensuring that those impacted receive services that help stabilize their interaction with the world around them.

Lincoln grows love of nature for kids

The NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln sponsored its Children’s Spring Festival for pre-kindergarten and kindergarteners and their parents from P.S. 18 across the street from Lincoln Hospital.

The Lincoln Courtyard was filled with “never stop growing” activities, the art of planting fruit and

vegetable seeds into pots.

All pots were taken back to the classrooms so they can be watched as the seeds become seedlings and grow into edible and recognizable food. Parents and children and Lincoln staff and volunteers participating enjoyed the weather, the activities and the

The Crane Project: Montefiore addresses grief as a community

By Dr. Sriya Bhattacharyya Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, we’ve lost over 6,000 lives in the Bronx — neighbors, relatives, friends, and healthcare and essential workers.

Social distancing guidelines have meant that funerals and other forms of commemoration for our loved ones have been paused, while the emotional tolls continue to increase. In response, a team of psychologists, artists, and creative arts therapists at Montefiore have come together and formed The Crane Project to support emotional healing.

Paper cranes have been used throughout history to honor mass

losses of life. In the Japanese tradition, one thousand paper cranes are hung to symbolize hope and healing.

Flocks of cranes hang at memorials for 9/11, Hiroshima, and the Boston Marathon bombing, and are now springing up around the United States as a way to honor those lost to COVID-19.

The Crane Project is a living art installation at Montefiore where we invite community members and healthcare providers to explore the

impact of COVID-19.

Participants can choose to write 6-word poems, create origami (folded paper in the shape of cranes), or experience a group art exhibit throughout the hospital.

Our goal is to provide an avenue for community healing; to help individuals grieve; to honor the lives lost during the COVID-19 pandemic; and to create a public tribute to instill hope and foster resilience.

Commemoration serves many roles in grieving. By creating a space for public acknowledgement, memorials can affirm that pain and sorrow is authentic and important. Sharing and receiving support from one’s community provides an opportuni-

ty to move forward as a collective.

When we don’t grieve or acknowledge loss, our feelings don’t disappear. Instead, they manifest as anxiety, sadness, or anger, and we may try to cope with the pain in harmful ways. Creativity and art can be powerful ways to access and make sense of our grief.

When we write as witnesses to a historical event, we can be present with our emotions.

Written words ensure that the losses are not forgotten. The folding of origami cranes allows us the opportunity to publicly display these emotions as part of a collective, while giving us reflective time for our own feelings. Sharing grief, loss, and hope

within a larger group connects us, empowers us, and reminds us that we are not alone.
