A wild driver who ran red lights and drove on the sidewalk was charged with dragging an officer and running over her foot as she tried to arrest him, prosecutors said. The incident was captured on surveillance video and police body cam video.

Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark said, “The defendant was allegedly weaving through oncoming traffic and driving through red lights. When police stopped the defendant and entered

the vehicle, he allegedly put the car in drive and accelerated, dragging the officer, and injuring her. His alleged actions not only recklessly put the officers at risk, but also members of the community.”

By Dan Gesslein A Bronx man who was arrested for rape last year, was arrested in Cincinnati for a separate Bronx sexual assault of a pregnant woman over the summer, police said.

Amara Doumbouya, 27, is heading back to NYC after being arrested in Cincinnati in connection with an attempted rape in the Bronx.

According to the NYPD, Doumbouya is the man whose image is on surveillance video released in connection with a sexual assault on August 9th in Concourse Village. The video released showed the man wanted for questioning wearing an orange t-shirt with a distinctive drawing of a dark bunny design and the word "Lucky Charm" on the front.

“The defendant allegedly tried to rape a five-months’ pregnant woman, kicking and punching her in the face, head and abdomen. The defendant also allegedly strangled the victim,” District Attorney Darcel Clark said. “The atrocious attack left her with bruises, lacerations and swelling.

Fortunately, the victim gave birth

to a healthy baby months after the horrendous incident.”

At around 3 am on August 9, a 37-year-old woman was sitting in front of her apartment building in the vicinity of East 163 Street and Teller Avenue, when a man struck up a conversation with her. When the suspect made some obscene remarks, the woman, who was 5 months pregnant at the time, tried to go into her building. The man then grabbed her and pulled her shirt up over her head and wrapped a scarf around her neck.

He then threw her to the ground and dragged her into the vestibule where he tried to pull her clothes off and climbed on top of her.

The victim fought back and scratched her attacker’s face. The would-be rapist responded by striking the woman in the face and stomach. A neighbor heard the victim’s screams and came to her aid.

The woman was treated at Lincoln Hospital and is in stable condition.

The NY Daily News is reporting that Doumbouya had been arrested last year for a rape near Crotona Park. On January 13, 2021, Doumbouya invited a 53-year-old woman into his home on Boston Road. He then allegedly slapped the woman and refused to let her leave. He then

raped the woman, police said.

Doumbouya was arrested and charged with rape and assault in 2021.

Police said Doumbouya was picked up in Cincinnati for the recent sexual assault. The suspect has ties in the city and had applied for Ohio state and local identification. It is unknown when he moved Cincinnati after being charged in 2021 with the Crotona rape.

The defendant had been released on $25,000 bail at his Criminal Court ar-

raignment on December 14, 2021 and was later remanded for a parole violation. He is due back in court May 18, 2022.

According to the investigation on December 12, 2021, in the Fordham section of the Bronx, the defendant allegedly refused to pull over during a traffic stop near 194th Street and Marion Avenue. Haruna

allegedly drove into oncoming traffic, through red lights, speeding, and at one point steered onto the sidewalk in an effort to avoid traffic.

Police approached the vehicle, and the defendant allegedly punched one officer who attempted to put the vehicle in park. Another officer tried to open the front driver side door, and the

defendant allegedly pushed her out of the vehicle, put the car into drive, accelerated and ran over the officer’s foot. He then crashed into another car. The officer sustained a fractured ankle and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

An indictment is an accusatory instrument and is not proof of a defendant’s guilt.

Wounded teen charged with attempting to rundown cop

By David Greene Police have charged a teen in connection with attempting to run-down a police officer-- when cops fired into the vehicle, striking him twice in the head.

Police say 18-year-old Luis Manuel-Monsanto of Clifton, NJ., was driving a Jeep along Boston Road, running red lights, when officers attempted to stop the

vehicle at East 165 Street, at just before 7 p.m. on March 6.

Police say the teen put the car in reverse and into the direction of at least one of-

ficer, when two officers fired a total of four rounds, with two striking Manuel-Monsanto.

"The officers drove ahead of the vehicle and angled their unmarked police car with the warning lights in front of the Jeep, as a second unmarked police car, also with its lights on, approached from behind," NYPD Chief of Department Kenneth Corey said.

According to police, when the officers got out of their squad cars to approach the SUV, the Jeep backed up and was seen racing toward an officer. The officer pulled out his weapon and opened fire striking the driver.

"The officers immediately began to render lifesaving aid to the driver. Responding officers removed three additional occupants from the vehicle to the 42nd pre-

cinct for further investigation," Corey said.

According to the NY Post, Manuel-Monsanto was living in New Jersey, but was a sophomore at Cardinal Hayes High School on the Grand Concourse.

Police continue to investigate and prosecute the case as the NYPD's Force Investigation Division investigates the officers actions in the case.

Another unprovoked NYC subway attack

By Dan Gesslein Violence on the NYC subway lines continues as a woman was punched in the face in another unprovoked attack on a subway platform. The NYPD released surveillance video in the hopes of locating a suspect.

At around 7:12 am on February 28, the female subway rider was walking down the stairs at Woodlawn Station. The man in front of her suddenly turned around and punched her in the face.

Investigators released surveillance video of the suspect who is wanted for questioning. The video shows the suspect inside a pizza shop on Jerome Avenue shortly after the attack.

The Woodlawn attack is just the latest unprovoked attack on NYC subway commuters.

Previously, cops in Wakefield arrested Frank Abrokwa, 37, after he allegedly smeared feces in the face of a woman as she sat on a bench on the train platform. Abrokwa was released under the no bail law.

The feces attack came days after a horrify-

ing attack in Manhattan where 57-year-old Nina Rothschild was repeatedly struck in the head with a hammer as she walked down the steps to a Queens subway station. William Blount was arrested and held without bail.

The event that marks the official start of spring/ summer in New York City is officially accepting registrations. The 14th annual Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Run for the Wild run/walk at the Bronx Zoo returns on Saturday, April 30 at the Bronx Zoo.

This year’s event is dedicated to hornbills and will help raise important funds to further its mission of saving wildlife in New York and around the world. Runners, walkers, and wildlife supporters are invited to participate and/or make a donation to support a participating runner or team.

Each participant is encouraged to seek donations and there are prizes for achieving the fundraising goals.

There is a $35 minimum fundraising requirement (plus registration) for all participants 16 years of age and old-

er. Registration fees are $55 for adults and $45 for children and seniors. There is a $15 discount for members. Those who prefer to participate virtually, virtual run registration is $35.

Individual and team participants can register for the 5k run or 3k walk at WCSRunForTheWild.org.

Amid rising prices Hochul raises SNAP benefits

Governor Kathy Hochul announced that all New Yorkers enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will receive the maximum allowable level of food benefits for March.

All households participating in SNAP—including those already at the maximum level of benefits —will receive a supplemental allotment this month, which will result in New York State's economy receiving roughly $232 million in federal funding.

"No New Yorker should struggle to put food on the table," Governor Hochul said. "Ensuring eligible New Yorkers get the maximum level of food benefits will bring much-needed relief to millions of New Yorkers, ensuring no one gets left behind as our economic recovery moves forward.”

SNAP households in all counties outside of New York City should see these extra benefits posted between now and the end of the day Thursday, March 17. Those SNAP households in the five-county New York City region should see their benefits post between Thursday, March 17, and Wednesday, March 30.

The emergency assistance supplement is to be provided to households that do not ordinarily receive the maximum allowable benefit per month on SNAP - a federally fund-

ed program overseen by the state Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance. Those households already near or at the maximum benefit level -$835 for a household of four -will receive a supplemental payment of at least $95.

New Yorkers continue to rely heavily on SNAP, with about 1.6 million households throughout the state enrolled in the program in January, a nearly 1 percent increase over the previous month. Roughly 2.8 million New Yorkers received benefits in January, the most since June 2021.

OTDA began issuing the emergency supplemental benefits in April 2020 to those SNAP households receiving less than the maximum monthly benefit amount. When New York State's emergency declaration expired in June 2021, the agency successfully worked with the federal government to secure the maximum allotment for all SNAP households until the expiration of the federal declaration, currently expected to be extended into May. OTDA Commissioner Daniel W. Tietz said, "We continue to see strong demand for

SNAP benefits, underscoring the economic struggles so many households are experiencing throughout our state.

These supplemental benefits play an important role in helping households make ends meet and avoid food insecurity as our state continues to recover from the pandemic."

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand said, "As food prices rise and New York continues to battle the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, SNAP provides a critical lifeline for low-income New Yorkers," said Senator Gillibrand. "I applaud Governor Hochul's work to provide struggling families with additional food assistance this March and I'll keep fighting to bring federal resources to our state.”

Representative Sean Maloney said, "Thank you, Governor Hochul, for putting these federal funds to work to reduce food insecurity in our communities. I fought to include funding for SNAP in the American Rescue Plan because no child in America should go to bed hungry and we know that when Hudson Valley families have food on the table, kids do better in school and the whole family lives healthier, more productive lives.”

OTDA distributed roughly $2.5 billion in supplemental benefits last year alone, underscoring the integral role this federal funding is playing in New York's economic recovery. Every federal dollar invested in SNAP

is estimated to generate up to $1.54 in economic activity, according to a federal study quantifying the impact of SNAP on the U.S. economy.

As with the prior months, the payments will be delivered directly to recipients' existing Electronic Benefit Transfer accounts and can be accessed with their existing EBT cards. Like regular SNAP benefits, the supplemental benefits can be used to purchase food at authorized retail food stores. Any unused SNAP benefits will automatically carry over to the following month.

Helping children, families cope with hospitalization for 50 yrs

Close your eyes and bring it to life in your mind’s eye…what was the environment like, how did it smell, did you taste anything, do you remember any sounds there, who was with you and how did the provider explain everything…or not? Let yourself really go back into that memory, stay there for a minute. Did you have a Certified Child Life Specialist (CCLS) to support you?

This month at Montefiore we commemorate 50 years of the Phoebe H. Stein Child Life Program helping children and their families cope with hospitalization.Trained professionals, who complete a clinical internship and pass a certification exam, CCLSs recognize the unique emotional and developmental needs of children throughout their healthcare experience.

The role of the child life specialist is to help children successfully cope with illness, injury, and treatment so that they may continue to live

normal lives, despite their health challenges.

Recognizing that play is an important part of every child's life, essential to growth and development, but also play is a tool for learning and to promote healing, Montefiore launched The Phoebe H. Stein Child Life Program in 1972. Throughout the 197090s, the program expanded to offer services in all inpatient units and the day surgery.

Our child life specialists use play, art, music, technology, and socialization to help patients ranging from newborns

to young adults, minimize stress and trauma during medical events, and help them begin to understand and cope with their fears during their hospitalization.

Our child life specialists help children, and their families, prepare for procedures, including teaching them coping strategies for pain and anxiety reduction.They also accompany patients through treatments, help formulate family-centered treatment plans and provide bereavement support.

When the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM) opened in 2001, there was a strong foundation of child life services already integrated into the family-centered approach of the medical team. I began my career here as a CCLS in 1999 and in 2004, I became Director of the program with a vision to expand. With the support of leadership, the program is now also available to patients seen in the pediatric emergency department, the behavioral health program, on the dialysis unit, in the hematology oncology clinic, at radiology appointments and various outpatient sites.

Over the years we have add-

ed licensed creative arts therapists to provide therapeutic interventions through music and art.

As well as their critical role at our patients’ bedsides, our senior child life specialists support programs around education, internships, special events, and inclusion initiatives to develop cultural humility. The child life program has dozens of community partners who provide support services and enhance programming for our patients and families.

Since the Child Life services began five decades ago, we have also developed a mentorship program to offer Bronx young adults an opportunity to work within the child life team by offering recreation activities to our patients, such as playing games and keeping them company in our playrooms. The mentees receive guidance to help develop their professional skills, including helping with their resume writing, interview skills and exposure to healthcare careers that helps them determine their own career path.

One day walking down Bainbridge Avenue in front of CHAM, a young woman

approached me with open arms and a broad smile. She recalled that she was a patient in the pediatric intensive care unit 10 years earlier as a teenager and almost died.

She said “I don’t remember much about all that trauma, but what I do remember is that you were my child life specialist and you supported me through it all. You helped me understand and face the scariest time of my life and I have carried that with me into my adulthood.”

Recently when asking child life staff why they enjoy their work at CHAM, one CCLS remarked, “Child life specialists bring the power of play back to children in the hospital. I love my job because we give children the language they need to cope with their hospitalizations.”

As the current director, I am proud to have been a part of this program for the past 23 of its 50 years and look forward to continuing to help Bronx children for many more years to come.

Morris Heights Health joins global campaign to increase patient safety awareness

In recognition of National Patient Safety Awareness Week, held from March 13th-19, 2022, Morris Heights Health Center (MHHC) will be joining health organizations around the world in a global campaign to increase awareness on safety in the healthcare system, for patients, caregivers, and the workforce.

MHHC’s Patient Safety Committee, led by Dr. Kenneth Jones, Deputy Medical Director, is hosting a weeklong series of educational learning sessions with specific themes centered around patient safety and workshops designed for healthcare leaders. Each session will focus on developing a sustainable or-

ganizational culture of patient safety while identifying strategies that address workplace violence.

MHHC will kick-off their weeklong awareness campaign with opening remarks from the Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Lois Bookhardt-Murray. This campaign includes 15-minute presentations from the organization’s leadership, designed to engage the staff in best practices for providing a safe environment for patients and staff alike.

Employees are also invited to participate in a virtual Jeopardy themed game challenging their knowledge of patient safety processes and protocols. In col-

laboration with the Center for Patient Safety, MHHC will also feature daily lunch and learn sessions focused on reducing preventable harm.

In addition, they were recently awarded the 2021 Silver Tier Community Health Quality Leaders from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) for their notable quality improvement achievements in the areas of access, quality, health equity, and health information technology.

As part of Lincoln Hospital’s International Women’s Day celebration, Mexican artist Arantxa X. Rodríguez (AXR) unveiled “Blooming Blossoms,” a hand-painted mural in the OB/GYN unit.

“Blooming Blossoms” will adorn the walls in the maternity ward and bring light and color to the section of the hospital where life is born.

This mural was designed to spread positivity throughout the space, features several colorful mandalas with figures of mothers and caregivers.

“Blooming Blossoms” is Arantxa’s second mural and was made possible thanks to a City Artist Corps grant from the City of New York that she received last October.

Car drives through Bronx park, mows down woman walking dog

By David Greene A woman walking her dog along a footpath inside Claremont Park was struck by a speeding car. Police arrested an Atlanta man in connection with the accident but still have not determined why the car was driving through the park and on a foot path.

According to CISReports, a new reporting system by the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) and the NYPD's Crash Investigation Squad (CIS), the incident unfolded at 6:50 a.m. on March 12, after a 911 caller reported "a pedestrian struck inside of Claremont Park," within the confines of the 44th Precinct.

"Upon arrival," the report states, "Officers observed a 58-year-old female pedestrian lying on the ground with severe trauma to her head and torso.”

The victim was rushed

by EMS to NYC Health and Hospitals / Lincoln in critical condition with severe head trauma and other injuries.

The report continued, "A preliminary investigation determined that a 2017 silver Nissan Altima, being operated by a 21-year-old male, was recklessly being operated on a pedestrian roadway.

The vehicle mounted the curb onto a grassy knoll," striking a tree. It added, "The vehicle continued on the grass striking the pedestrian and her dog.

After dragging the pedestrian, the operator of the vehicle then backed up and left the location exiting at East 170 Street and Clay Avenue.”

After exiting the park, the vehicle drove a short distance down Clay Avenue, where it slammed into two parked cars at Claremont Parkway and Webster Avenue.

Police say the driver fled the scene on foot and was captured by patrol officers from the 44th Precinct a short distance away.

Police later charged Becan Floyd, 21, of Atlanta, GA., with two counts of assault, leaving the scene of an accident with serious injury, reckless endangerment, criminal possession of stolen property, reckless driving and

driving without a license.

At the scene investigators were observed inside Claremont Auto Parts, a business across the street from the second crash that had at least one camera facing in the direction of the Silver Nissan plowing into the parked cars.

Officials could not immediately say if the injuries to the still-unidentified woman who was mowed-down in the park

was intentional, accidental or if drugs or alcohol or weather played a role.

Meanwhile, officers from the 49th Precinct were on scene at the site of another crash that morning at the intersection of White Plains Road and Pelham Parkway, where bystanders reported two separate crashes at the intersection; however, the NYPD had no record of that crash.
