Gunman casually loads firearm during bodega robbery

By Dan Gesslein A Bronx gunman was caught on tape casually loading his weapon while trying to rob a gas station convenience store in East Tremont.

The NYPD released surveillance video of the robbery which left one man injured with a gunshot wound to his foot.

At around 7 am on February 15, two men walked into the convenience store of the BP Gas Station at 1862 Webster Avenue. The video shows one of the men walk

up to the counter behind two customers.

He casually pulls out his gun, puts the clip in and chambered a round before approaching the customers.

The gunman then forcibly removed the customer’s chain and bracelet.

Cops say one of the robbers discharged

their weapon striking a 48-year-old man in the foot.

The robbers fled in a red Mercedes-Benz sedan.

By Robert Kappstatter Cops are asking for the public’s help to catch a pistol packing mugger who struck twice in the Bronx.

The NYPD released surveillance photos of a man wanted in connection with two robberies in one week in the Bronx. In the photos the man is seen holding a handgun.

At around 3:15 pm on February 24, a 55-yearold resident was inside an apartment building on E. 174th Street when he was approached by a man wearing a hoodie and white face mask. The victim was then

smashed in the head with a handgun. The mugger removed $150 in cash and fled.

The victim was treated at St. Barnabas Hospital where he was treated for a laceration.

In another incident three days later, cops say the same suspect chose a traditional stickup for his next victim instead of a pistol whipping.

February 27, in the Bronx River Houses, the robber struck again. He approached a 24-year-old man in front of 1460 Bronx River Avenue. He pulled out a gun and removed a set of keys as he hopped on

the man’s e-bike. The robber then drove away on the e-bike towards 174th Street.

Senior critical after being struck crossing Hutchinson Parkway

By David Greene A senior citizen remains in critical condition after trying to cross a busy highway on the Indian Village / Pelham Bay border.

According to an unnamed police official, the incident was reported at 12:33 p.m. on February 26.

The police official stated via an email the following day, "Police responded to a 911 call of a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian struck on the

By Robert Kappstatter Cops are looking for a trio of muggers who attacked and robbed men and a woman during a series of robberies in the Bronx.

Police released surveillance video of three men suspected of mugging four people in Soundview.

The first attack happened inside a Soundview shopping center on January 27. At around 10:45 pm near the Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen at 1600 Bruckner Boulevard, a 22-year-old woman was approached

by three men. As one of the men asked for the time, another man pushed the woman to the ground and took her bag which contained $800 in cash, bank cards and a Samsung cellphone.

The victim suffered cuts and bruising to her hand but refused medical attention.

The next incident took place on February 15. At around 10:25 pm, the robbers approached a couple in front of a house

on Croes Avenue.

The trio surrounded a 31-year-old male and a 30-year-old female.

They swiped the woman’s black Polo purse and took the man’s wallet which contained $250 in cash. The group fled on foot without incident.

By David Greene Police are looking for three men who confronted a man outside a deli in West Farms before one of the assailants fired at least one shot into the man's head killing him.

Police officials say Travis Brooker, 35, was shot outside of the G & K Deli and Grocery, located at 1541 Rosedale Avenue at the corner of Bronx River Avenue, at 5:16 p.m. on March 5.

An unnamed police official stated at the time that Brooker

"was found lying unconscious and unresponsive at the location with at least one gunshot wound to the head.”

Brooker was pronounced dead a short time later at Jacobi Hospital.

On March 7, Brooker's brother-in-law Robert Ferguson was outside of the deli when he stated, "He was a good person, Travis was humble...

He's a very peaceful person and to be honest, he didn't deserve this.”

Ferguson recalled that Brooker had told him of a recent incident where he was "jumped," but Ferguson explained, "He didn't go into details, because men do that.

Men will just say I have a problem or I had a problem.”

Ferguson said he was thankful that Brooker was not alone when he died.

earlier, on the same block where Brooker once lived with his mother before moving her away.

But Brooker then met Ferguson's sister and the couple shared an apartment on the same block.

The couple's son turns one-years-old later this month and Brooker also left behind a second son with another woman.

When (The City) teamed up with our friends at Documented — a nonprofit news organization that focuses on New York City’s immigrants and the policies that affect their lives — we started getting questions about what rights tenants have if landlords threaten to call U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

So we made some calls. Here’s what we learned: Every tenant in New York has the same rights.

You have protection against eviction right now no matter what your immigration status — but only if you fill out a form called a hardship declaration.

Samantha Lyons, an immigrant tenant attor-

ney at Catholic Migration Services, which provides legal help for immigrants in Queens and Brooklyn, said her office has “seen a lot of landlord behavior threatening to call ICE.” Jennie Stephens-Romero, supervising housing attorney at Make the Road, a service provider and advocacy organization for immigrant and working-class New Yorkers, said, “We have seen a slight uptick in harassment based on immigration status during the pandemic.

Citizenship status and national origin are protected categories under New York City’s Human Rights Law. That

means it’s illegal for landlords (as well as employers and providers of public services) to discriminate against someone based on their real or perceived citizenship status or national origin.

So a landlord can’t use immigration status or what they think the immigration status is against a tenant to get them to move out?

5 nutrition tips to help with COVID-19 recovery

One way we can help

Eating fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains helps your immune system to stay strong. So, it is important to eat the right foods in addition to frequent hand washing, wearing a mask, and social distancing, to stay as healthy as possible through the COVID-19 pandemic.

If you do contract COVID-19, you might notice a loss of smell and a decreased appetite. If you don’t feel like eating, you might not be getting appropriate nutrition and hydration, both important in fighting the infection. You may unintentionally lose weight, as well as lean body mass.

Here are five nutrition tips you can fol-

low at home to help you stay resilient if you have COVID-19.

If you don’t have the energy to eat solid food, you can still get most of the calories and nutrition you need with liquid nutrition supplements, also known as meal replacements or protein shakes. You can find many of these at the grocery store or in your pharmacy. You can also make smoothies or milkshakes at home, with ingredients like Greek yogurt and peanut butter. Experiment with different fruits, vegetables, and proteins to find combinations you like.

Eat four to six smaller meals throughout the day rather than three big meals. For example, eat a small breakfast after you wake up and then plan another small meal about three hours later.

Do the same with lunch and dinner. Many folks find that smaller meals are more easily digested.

Choose snacks that are high in calories and protein but not large in size. Good choices include yogurt (especially Greek), crackers with peanut butter or cheese, hard-boiled eggs, or nuts.

If you don’t feel hun-

gry when you usually eat your regular meals, try “eating by the clock.” Set an alarm on your phone to help you remember.

Make sure you’re hydrating enough. It helps your body recover and can help prevent thick secretion build up in the lungs, which could lead to pneumonia.

If you have throat pain during or after a COVID-19 infection, you may find hot liquids easier to take. Fill a large water bottle in the morning and drink it all by the end of the day. If you have a fever or gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea, fill the bottle with an electrolyte solution, such as Gatorade or Pedialyte. This will help prevent you from getting dehydrated.

By David Greene A mass COVID-19 vaccination site has moved from the Walton High School Campus to the nearby Bronx High School of Science in Jerome Park.

On March 2, Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz announced on social media, "This is because (the) NYC Department of Education needed to reclaim the Walton HS campus for middle schoolers who were able to return to the classroom this week.”

Dinowitz added that the procedure will remain the same as shots will be given by appointment only.

Bronx High School of Science is located at 75 West 205 Street.

Meanwhile, the vaccination site at Yankee Stadium is now giving Bronx residents the one-shot Johnson and Johnson vaccine and is reportedly expanding to 24-hours a day.

New York City’s Commission on Human Rights focuses on protecting people from discrimination and making sure everyone’s rights are respected. You can report your landlord to this agency.

Agency officials respond to complaints and can help you understand whether your rights are being violated. The agency can also issue fines, bring cases to

court and offer trainings and other resources to stop instances of discrimination.

If you think your landlord is discriminating against you, you can call the Commission on Human Rights at 212-4160197.

When you call, you can stay anonymous and ask questions before you decide whether to file a complaint. You will not be asked about your immigration status.

What can happen if a tenant reports a landlord?

If you file a complaint

against your landlord, said Kathie Carroll, assistant commissioner for the Commission on Human Rights, an attorney will contact your landlord to explain the city’s discrimination laws to them. The attorney will let the landlord know their behavior is illegal and warn them they could face legal consequences and big fines.

If the landlord does not stop the discriminatory behavior, Carroll said, the commission can file a claim. Attorneys will then conduct an investigation

and try to reach an agreement with the landlord. If that doesn’t work out, the commission can bring the landlord to court.

Some landlords have been hit with fines as high as $17,000 for threatening a tenant with a call to ICE, Carroll said. The commission can also require landlords to undergo different training sessions and restorative justice programs.

Are there resources to help pay back rent if a tenant is undocumented?

Besides the resources listed above, there’s a privately funded rent assistance program called Project Parachute that helps tenants regardless of immigration status.

It’s funded largely by the Real Estate Board of New York and the New York State Association for Affordable Housing, and is being run by Enterprise Community Partners. Since August, Project Parachute has paid full rental arrears for 473 households, and 85% of those applicants have been undocumented.

Meanwhile, rent is still due, and the eviction moratorium is only in place until May, if you fill out a hardship declaration.

Lyons from Catholic Migration Services said, “There are just so many stopgap measures, and it’s frustrating to not have information on what’s happening.
