By Dan Gesslein A deranged man stabbed his victim in front of a Bronx firehouse, the NYPD says.

Investigators are trying to determine the reason why a man in Fordham Heights attacked a man in front of an FDNY station.

According to police, at around midnight on May 23rd, a 33-year-old man was standing in front of a firehouse at 1901 Sedgwick Avenue. An unknown man came up to him and stabbed him three times about the body.

EMS raced the victim to St.

Barnabas Hospital where he is listed in critical but stable condition.

The NYPD released surveillance video of the suspect leaving a location on West Burnside Avenue with a group of individuals; approximately one male, two females and a child.

Investigators say the attacker is a 25-year-old man with multiple tattoos on his arms and right hand. The individual

was last seen wearing a white t-shirt, dark green camouflage pants and reflective sneakers.

Driver sought after fleeing fatal crash

An NYPD source con-

firmed the deadly crash

that took place at 4:26 a.m. on Sunday, June 5, at the intersection of East 168 Street and Webster Avenue in Morrisania.

The source told the Bronx Voice, "It was determined that a 45-yearold male was operating a Toyota Camry traveling westbound on East 168 Street, when the vehicle was struck by another vehicle traveling northbound on Webster.”

After the collision, both vehicles continued north on Webster for an estimated 100 feet before coming

to a stop. The source added, "The unknown operator of that vehicle, exited the vehicle and fled the location on foot.”

The victim, driving in a vehicle with plates registered to the Taxi and Limousine Commission, was transported to Lincoln Hospital with "severe trauma to the head and body" and died a short time later.

The victim was later identified as Robert Goodwin, 45, of Queens, NY. Police officials had no description of the suspect, but a manhunt for the individual is currently underway.

Cell phone bandit robs 4 stores thru-out NYC

The NYPD says the same man robbed four Metro T by Mobile stores in the Bronx, Queens and Brooklyn.

By Dan Gesslein The NYPD is searching for a gunman who stuck up 4 Metro cell phones stores throughout the Bronx, Queens and Brooklyn within a week’s time. In the Bronx, the robber hit the same store twice.

The first robbery took place at around 8: 30 pm on May 19 at a Metro by T-Mobile store in a strip mall outside the Edenwald Houses.

In this case, as what would turn out to be the robber’s MO, wearing a mask and a hat, the suspect walks up to the counter and makes small talk. Then he casually pulls out a handgun and has the employee turn over the cash in the register. He then flees in a red SUV. In the Baychester case, the stick up man ran off with over $1,000 -

the most he would take away from in his robbery spree.

Cops say the same man struck again two days later in Ozone Park, Queens. At around 11:30 am on May 21, the suspect walked into the Metro by T-Mobile on Liberty Avenue and pulled out a gun. He fled with $80.

The next day the same suspect struck a Metro by T-Mobile store in Stuyvesant Heights, Brooklyn.

Once again, the robber walked up to the counter and engaged the employee in a conversation.

He then pulled out a gun and demanded cash. He fled on foot on Patchen Avenue with $230 taken from the robbery.

Cops say the gunman returned to the scene of the orig-

inal crime when he robbed the same Bronx cell store less than a week later. At around 7 pm on May 24, the robber walked into the same Metro by T-Mobile on 233rd Street he had started his crime spree. He walked up to the counter, pulled out a gun and demanded cash. This time he only fled with $158.

A second person has died from an outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease in the Highbridge section of the Bronx, health officials say. The deceased were both over 50 and “had risk factors for severe disease.”

So far 24 people have been diagnosed with Legionnaires since the outbreak was detected on May 3rd. In addition to the two deaths, four people are currently hospitalized with the disease.

The NYC Health Department ordered the remediation of the four cooling towers that tested positive for the presence of Legionella pneumophila, a type of bacteria that causes Legionnaires’ disease. The remediation was completed last week.

New Yorkers with flu-like symptoms, cough, fever or difficulty breathing should contact a physician immediately. Due to the ongoing spread of COVID-19, people

seeking care should be tested for COVID-19 and evaluated for Legionnaires’ disease.

People get Legionnaires’ disease by breathing in water vapor that contains Legionella bacteria. Legionnaires’ disease is not contagious and can be treated with antibiotics when caught early.

Legionnaires’ disease is a type of pneumonia that is caused by the bacteria Legionella, which grows in warm water. Symptoms resemble

other types of pneumonia and can include fever, chills, muscle aches, and cough.

Legionnaires’ disease can be caused by plumbing systems where conditions are favorable for Legionella growth, such as cooling towers, whirlpool spas, hot tubs, humidifiers, hot water tanks, and evaporative condensers of large air-conditioning systems.

Individuals only get sick by breathing in water vapor

containing Legionella bacteria, and the disease is not transmitted from person to person.

Individuals at higher risk include those ages 50 and above, cigarette smokers, and people with chronic lung disease or compromised immune systems. People living or working in the area who are experiencing these symptoms should seek medical attention with a primary care provider or seek urgent care.

Drivers fume as gas hits new highs

By David Greene Gasoline prices across the Bronx have already cracked the $5 per gallon mark with just two weeks before the summer driving season begins-- when gas traditionally sees it's highest prices of the year.

The highest prices found on May 25, was at the Mobil Gas Station at White Plains Road and Bronx Park East, where a gallon of regular gas for cash would cost a driver $5.29, while their "Ex-

tra" would cost a driver $6.09 and the "premium" was getting $6.19 per gallon.

Cortez blamed inflation due to "global events" including the pandemic and Russia's war in Ukraine as the cause of interrupting the supply chain.

On May 29, "Ray" visiting from Albany and filling up his tank

at the BP Gas Station at Webster Avenue and East 202 Street, was asked why he decided to fill up at one of the higher priced gas stations, he responded, "Don't tell me that."

Ray then asked, "So I can find it cheaper?”

When asked who is to blame, Ray said, "I'm not really sure of the process, but I feel whoever can do something should do so im-

mediately, because it's outrageous." Ray added, "It was $4.90 when I left there, but $5.09 is the highest I've ever paid.”

Meanwhile, "John" from Mt. Vernon, NY., was also visiting the BP Gas Station on Webster Avenue, and he explained, "I'm in a hurry," as his reason to not search for a lower price. John added, "They have to lower

In a statement released on May 23,

by Andrew Gross, a spokesman for the Automobile Association of America (AAA) when he stated, "Gasoline has either remained flat or risen every day since April 24 and has set a new record daily since May 10. That was the day gas prices eclipsed the previous record high of

$4.33, set earlier this year on March 11.”

Gross added, "Seasonal gas demand is rising as more drivers hit the road, despite the pain they face paying at the pump." He added, "Tighter supply and increased demand have pushed pump prices higher. This supply / demand dynamic and volatile crude prices will keep upward pressure on pump prices."

Unprovoked attacks spreading across boro

By Dan Gesslein The first day of summer is 17 days away but the crazies are already in full bloom in the Bronx. Several residents have been violently injured in unprovoked attacks.

The NYPD is searching for a man who struck a Bronx straphanger with a wrench in an unprovoked attack. At around 8:25 pm on May 30, a man was riding the D Train at the 167th Street Subway sta-

tion. The 53-year-old was approached by a man who pulled out a wrench and hit the straphanger on the hand.

Cops say the wrench-wielding attacker struck for no reason. The

Police are searching for a man who put a 53 year old in a rear choke hold. After choking his victim and beating him with a metal object, the attacker began kicking the man. victim had no interaction with him prior to the attack.

After hitting the man the attacker fled on foot.

The victim was treated for a laceration at BronxCare Hospital where he is listed in stable condition.

In another case, a Fordham man was beaten with a metal object and stomped on for an apparent minor arguement.

At around 6 pm on June

1, two men had gotten into a verbal dispute inside 2460 Davidson Avenue. The 53-year-old man walked down to Fordham unaware of any trouble.

The NYPD released surveillance video which shows the man the victim had gotten into a dispute with sneak up behind him and then put him in a rear choke hold. The attacker then began punching the victim in the head and

hand with a metal object knocking him to the ground. Then the attacker is seen kicking his victim in the chest as he tried to stand.

The victim was rushed to Saint Barnabas Hospital, where he is listed in stable condition.

Man charged with shooting up hospital

A Soundview man has been indicted for shooting up a hospital waiting room because a fellow patient looked at him the wrong way, prosecutors said.

Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark announced that a Bronx man has been indicted for shooting at a man multiple times, wounding him, inside the emergency room waiting area of NYC Health + Hospitals Jacobi.

District Attorney Clark said, “The defendant allegedly opened fire near patients including a mother and her baby, as well as emergency healthcare professionals, who ran for their lives. We are thankful that the shooter was swiftly ap-

prehended, due to hospital cameras capturing the attack.”

District Attorney Clark said the defendant, Keber Martinez, 25, was arraigned June 1, 2022 on Attempted Murder in the second degree, two counts of first-degree Assault, two counts of second-degree Criminal Possession of a Weapon, two counts of second-degree Assault, first-degree Reckless Endangerment, Criminal Possession of a Firearm, third-degree As-

sault, second-degree Menacing, second-degree Reckless Endangerment, two counts of fourth-degree Criminal Possession of a Weapon, and Possession of Ammunition before Bronx Supreme Court Justice George Villegas. He was remanded and is due back August 24, 2022.

Protests against gun violence held thru-out Bronx

By David Greene After a series of mass shootings at a supermarket in Buffalo, a flea-market in Houston, a Taiwanses Church in California and an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas-- Bronxites took to the streets to mourn the victims and call on elected officials to ban automatic weapons, tighten current gun laws and close loopholes.

Members of North Bronx Racial Justice (NBRJ) had already planned a vigil for the victims of the Buffalo supermarket shooting when the day before a gunman opened fire at the Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas killing 19 students and two teachers.

Members of NBRJ who met at the Riverdale Monument at Riverdale Avenue and West 239 Street, were also mourning the death of Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, who was killed by Israeli troops on May 11 in the West Bank town of Jenin.

On this day NBRJ also marked the second anniversary of the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

NBRJ guest speaker Reverend Frank Coleman, President of the Yonkers NAACP, told a crowd of about 30, "Squirrels are walking around, running around up and down trees. Most of them are grey, every now and then you see a black one. And not one grey squirrel stops and says, 'Oh, you're black.' They continue together...

They all just enjoyed living together in community. The only species (with) the highest intelligence that hates, discriminates against itself-- is humanity.”

After comparing Akleh's death with the assassinations of Martin Luther King, Jr., and Malcolm X, Ibrahim said of the gun epedemic,

"There is a very simple solution, take the arms away from people."

Ibrahim then asked, "Where are the politicians today? They should be here now.”

A few dozen fifth-grade students of Bronx Community Charter School, located at 3170 Webster Avenue, walked out of their school and stood across the street along Webster Avenue and East 205 Street-- one child holding the eye-catching sign that asked "Are We Next?" Drivers passing the children were quick to blow their horns in response.

Other signs created and held up by the youngsters included, "We Don't Want Safe Schools, We Need Safe Schools," "We Want to Live" and "End Guns.”

On May 31, "Sharon" a 5th grade teacher at Bronx Community Charter School told the Bronx Voice, "Our classes decided to hold the walk out."

Sharon continued, "When students arrived at the school Wednesday, our class morning meeting started with the question, 'What's something you want to talk about today?' And about a dozen kids immediately wanted to talk about the shooting in Uvalde, Texas.”

Detailing the discussion, Sharon recalled, "In the conversation, kids shared that they felt scared and saddened by what happened, and a few asked, 'What can we do about it?' We talked about the importance of feeling safe in school and how vital that is to be able to learn. When I saw an article about planned walkouts on Thursday, my co-teacher and I asked the students if they wanted to walk out, as a way to demonstrate the need for safe schools.”

Sharon concluded, "We had

originally planned for a few moments of silence to honor the victims of the shooting, and their families, but we stood there with our signs about the need for safe schools, cars started honking in support, and the kids were moved to stay outside longer." She added that her students felt "proud" and "hopeful" about what they had done.

Sharon quoted a student named "Jenny," who said of the driver's response, "I didn't know that there were so many people who felt the same way. It made me feel really hopeful."

According to Sharon, Jenny added, "Maybe we can change things and everyone can feel safe in school.”

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-14) began her virtual town hall meeting, speaking at great lengths on gun legislation, telling constituents, "It is shocking. It is appalling that since the time that we had our last town hall, there have been three mass shootings in the United States" She added, "It is such a damning indictment of governance and the failure of governance to not only stop these horrific attacks from happening, but to prevent them.”

Cortez recalled the passage of several pieces of gun legislation in the House of Representatives, but the U.S. Senate has not yet acted. Calling out Senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema by name, later using the term "obstructionists," Cortez added, "This gun violence occurs daily.

I will not make excuses for senators who don't act on this. We're not stopping. We're not giving up.”

Fed up with gun violence after a series of mass shootings Riverdale residents took to the streets as they gathered at the Riverdale Monument.

Pacific Island Heritage Month by the Bharati Foundation at the Vishnu Mandir Hindu Temple, in Soundview, took a more somber tone as organizer Bharati Sukul Kemraj created a table memorial for the victims of Buffalo and Uvalde and invited members of the anti-violence program 'Guns Down Life Up.’ Kemraj explained, "We're edKemraj added, "We want to tell the families from Buffalo and Texas that we may not have ever met them, but we truly care and we're here not only to say a prayer, but also to have conversations about gun violence and how it's taking innocent lives all across the country.”

On May 31, Mayor Eric Adams kicked-off `Gun Violence Awareness Month" and Everytown For Gun Safety Support Fund is kicking off it's own 'Gun Violence Awareness Week, where supporters are asked to wear orange between June 3 - 5.

The idea of wearing orange is in honor of Hadiya Pendleton who was shot and killed one week after marching in President Barack Obama's inaugural parade in 2013-- on the streets of Chicago.

According to the Gun Violence Archives, as of June 6th, there have been 18,687 gun deaths reported in the United States in 2022, including 246 mass shootings. Gun Violence Archives also report that 162 police officers have been killed, 379 individuals have been shot and killed by police and 707 children under the age of 18 have died from gunfire.

According to the Everytown For Gun Safety, orange was selected because that is the color worn by hunters as a way of preventing gun accidents in the wilderness.
