By Bob Kappstatter A pregnant woman was viciously beaten with a wrench by a man as bystanders tried to stop it. The attack was caught on tape.

Surveillance video from a off of the Fordham Road building captured the attack shopping district at around A pregnant woman was attacked with a wrench by a man near the Fordham Road Shopping along the Grand Concourse 5:20 pm on June 6. The vid- District. eo shows a man pushing a woman on the street in gridlock and pinning her against a parked car. He is then seen wailing on her.

Investigators said the man used a wrench to hit the woman who is pregnant.

The attacker then drags the 26-year-old woman by the hair and lets go as bystanders begin to surround the victim and confront the attacker. He is then seen jumping into his car as a crowd starts to surround the vehicle.

The victim goes into the car parked ahead of her attacker, pulls out a cell phone and appears to dial. Suddenly the attacker’s silver BMW pulls out of the stopped traffic, mounts the shoulder and curb and drives off.

Investigators would not say if the attack was an incident of road rage or if the victim knew her attacker.

rushed to nearby St. Barnabas Hospital where she was treated for a severe laceration to the head.

The NYPD released the video and still photos of the suspect’s car.

Pol gets $ for tows to combat illegally parked tractor trailers

The issue of tractor-trailers parking on residential streets has long plagued many Bronx communities.

Despite legislative efforts to raise penalties, the problem persists as companies write off parking violations as cheaper than hotel and storage costs and thus are the cost of doing business.

Furthermore, enforcement efforts can be hampered due to the relative few amount of large tow trucks the New York Police Department (NYPD) has to enforce parking regulations and remove these trucks from City streets.

As a part of an ongoing effort to address this issue and improve his constituents’ quality of life, Assembly Member Michael Benedetto (D-Bronx), announced that he was nominating the NYPD for an approximate $800,000 grant to purchase an additional tractor-trailer that would be dedicated to the Northeast Bronx.

“This has been a longstanding problem in my community,” said Assembly Member Benedetto. “These problematic tractor-trailers are more than just unsightly, they also block road-

Woman fatally stabbed in her apartment

By Dan Gesslein The NYPD released new video of a man wanted in connection with the fatal stabbing of a woman in a Castle Hill apartment.

At around midnight on June 24, officers from the 43rd Precinct responded to a call of a woman stabbed in the Castle Hill Houses. In the second floor apartment of 530 Olmsted Avenue cops discovered the lifeless body

of a 56-year-old woman. The victim was stabbed in the lower torso.

Police have identified the victim as Nancy Newsome who lived in the apartment.

Investigators would not comment on a motive for the murder.

The NYPD released surveillance video from inside an elevator in the building.

The man is seen in the elevator with a moped.

By David Greene At least one man is dead and seven others were wounded after six shootings were reported across the borough as America celebrated it's 246th birthday on July 4. Police are asking for help in catching several suspects in different shootings.

Police officers in the 42nd Precinct began their day with a shooting reported at 12:54 a.m. A 33-year-old man was shot at Webster Avenue and East 170 Street. According to a police source, the victim stated, "He was sitting on a bench when he heard gun fire and realized he was shot in the leg."

The unidentified victim was transported to Lincoln Hospital, the search for the gunman continues.

The sound of gunfire remained silent until officers from the 40th Precinct were called to Eagle Avenue and East 158 Street, at 5:50 p.m.

Police say a 24-year-old man was walking his dog when a person in a dark colored vehicle shot him in the leg.

Once again the unidentified victim was transported to an area hospital and police are looking for the gunman.

At 8:45 p.m. officers from the 40th Precinct were called to Pulaski Park at Bruckner Boulevard and Alexander Avenue. Police discovered a 35-year-old man who was shot in the chest and hand.

Police continue to identify the gunman.

Police in the 48th Precinct were called to 2431 Prospect Avenue in the Belmont section after 3 people were reported shot. Police say John Edwards, 62, was hit in the chest steps away from his home and died a short time later at St. Barnabas Hospital. Police confirmed a 23-year-old man was shot in the right leg and a 26-yearold malln was hit in the right arm, and both men were also transported to St. Barnabas Hospital.

A fifth shooting was reported at Third Avenue and East 182 Street in the confines of the 48th Precinct at sometime after 10 p.m. A short time later officers from the 46th Precinct reportedly stopped the vehicle on the

Cross Bronx Expressway and placed the suspect in custody however, this incident could not be immediately verified.

At 11:51 p.m. a group of people were sitting outside of 2705 Bainbridge Avenue, when at least one person opened fire on the crowd.

One police official told the Bronx Voice, "Officers were informed by a 23-year-old male he was shot by an individual on a dirt bike."

The victim was shot in the abdomen and remains in stable condition at St. Barnabas Hospital. No description of the suspect was immediately available.

By David Greene A Manhattan grandmother with ties to the Bronx has been located after frantic weeks of searching, and according to her granddaughter, the woman was discovered at a shelter and was identified by one of its residents.

Julia May Edwards, 81, disappeared from 10th Avenue in the Dykman section of Manhattan on June 10, within the confines of the 34th Precinct. But the NYPD and Edwards' family focused on the area of Norwood, where Edwards had once worked at North Central Bronx Hospital and lived along Mosholu Parkway.

On June 14, granddaughter Tamisha Edwards told the Bronx Voice, "My family and I are extremely worried for her safety... she is alone and we can't find her.”

Family members and friends had been flooding the Norwood, Bedford Park and Kingsbridge sections of the borough with the NYPD missing person's flyer with Edwards' photo.

Tamisha Edwards recently reported, "My grandmother has been found. She was found last night actually.

We were notified by someone who resides in the shelter, who recognized her face from social media, because her face has been re-Tweet-

ed and her post had been re-posted... so she was able to be identified.”

According to Tamisha Edwards, Julia May was discovered living among the homeless at the Franklin Williams Women's Shelter on Franklin Avenue at East 166 Street in Morrisania.

Because it is a shelter and issues of privacy, the family was not yet able to thank the unidentified woman who identified Julia May and then contacted family members through social media.

Tamisha Edwards explained, "No. We weren't able to speak to anyone. It's a shelter so they don't want to release information." She added, "I am very grateful.

We are all very grateful to her.

She was very kind and supportive, I can just say that.”

Jacobi gets $10M to expand hyperbaric health NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi was awarded $10M in Fiscal Year 2023 capital funding through Council Member Marjorie Velázquez and New York City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams to replace the hospital's Hyperbaric Chamber and expand Hyperbaric Medicine services.

In addition to the $10M in capital funding, Council Member Marjorie Velázquez also awarded NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi $286K to purchase new ultrasound machines and $500K to acquire echocardiography ultrasound machines. The new ultrasound machines will replace the current end-of-life units at the facility over 11 years old. The new upgrade will prevent disruption of services due to faulty and aged equipment and offer better resolution and state-of-theart modules that will enhance diagnostic care for patients.

The current Hyperbaric Chamber at NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi provides Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO). This medical treatment allows patients to breathe 100% oxygen while sitting or lying comfortably inside a pressurized

chamber. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy rapidly reverses life-threatening carbon monoxide poisoning and prevents delayed neurological injury. Also, patients with chronic wounds that conventional wound healing methods cannot address have improved outcomes while undergoing HBO. Treatment for non-emergent conditions takes approximately 110 minutes, and patients are always personally accompanied by a clinician.

Monkeypox vaccines available

The Health Department today announced the next phase of the City’s plan to provide the JYNNEOS™ vaccine to eligible people who may have had a recent exposure to monkeypox.

Temporary vaccine clinics will open at the Central Harlem Sexual Health Clinic (2238 Fifth Avenue in Manhattan) and the Chelsea Sexual Health Clinic (303 Ninth Avenue in Manhattan) on Thursday for appointments only. A third clinic, located at the Corona Sexual Health Clinic, is expected to open later this month. Information on eligibility and scheduling appointments can be found at: nyc.gov/health/monkey-

The Bronx faced the highest unemployment rates of all NYC boroughs throughout the pandemic. Today, more than two years into the pandemic, programs that help set our communities and our residents up for successful, independent futures are more important than ever.

Pipeline programs – which are designed to provide skill-building, educational, and career support to students who face challenges applying to or entering the workforce – offer interventions such as test preparation, academic coursework, internship experiences, and mentoring to increase academic skills, teach students about the transition from academics to employment, and help establish opportunities for sustainable work.

One of these programs, Project SEARCH, provides employment training and education for young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, not only preparing participants to enter the workforce but ensuring that program graduates are successfully maintaining competitive employment over time.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, across all age groups, persons with disabilities were much less likely to be employed

than those with no disabilities, and across all educational attainment groups, unemployment rates for persons with a disability were higher than those for persons without a disability.

Project SEARCH is a successful job readiness program for high school students with disabilities, ages 18-21, and is recognized for its innovative approach and collaborative efforts between business, education, and vocational rehabilitative services. Project SEARCH employment outcomes far exceed the national average rate of employment for people with disabilities, with a 68% success rate in transitioning students from high school into competitive employment.

Montefiore became the first hospital in New York City to partner with Project SEARCH in 2014, with unwavering support from leadership and many departments that have hosted students throughout the years. Since partnering

with Project SEARCH, 100 students have completed Montefiore’s program, with an average 75% employment rate each year.

Students who join Montefiore as interns through Project SEARCH get to experience up to three 10-week rotations in departments such as Human Resources, Environmental Services, Nursing, Gastroenterology, and Cardiac Catheterization Lab, where they learn job-specific skills and develop the necessary “essential skills” to professionally interact with supervisors, colleagues, and patients.

Last week, Montefiore proudly graduated 12 students from its 2021-2022 class.

“My confidence grew within the last year. I opened up more and was able to communicate better,” said graduate Genesis Perez, who was the graduation speaker. Genesis worked at the front desk of the Endoscopy Suite, where she greeted and assisted patients in English and Spanish.

The Morris Heights Health Center (MHHC) Foundation hosted its 20th IMPACT Awards Gala at the beautiful Marina Del Rey in the Bronx on June 23, 2022. The event drew in more than 400 attendees from across the Bronx and the Tristate area.

The annual gala, which was held in-person for the first time in two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, is the health center’s largest and most prominent fundraising event of the year. The gala

established to support the organizations ongoing mission to provide quality, affordable and accessible healthcare for all.

Bailey, 36th NYS Senate District and Assemblymember Rodneyse Bichotte-Hermelyn, NYS Assembly District 42, with the Advocacy Impact Award; Dr. Bola Omotosho, President of Community Board 5, with the Community Interest Impact Award; Tomas Ramos, CEO & Founder of The Oyate Group’s Bronx Rising Initiative, with the Health and Wellness Impact Award; José Serrano, MHHC Board Member, with the Leadership Impact Award; and Hiram Torres, VP of Operations, BronxCare Health System, with the Community Partnership Impact Award.

In addition, the foundation honored the late Thomasina Bushby, a former member of the Morris Heights Health Center Board of Directors, with a posthumous award in recognition of her longtime service and dedication to MHHC and the Bronx.

Guests enjoyed an evening of fine dining, and the sounds

of upbeat tempos by The Cassandra Band as they watched the much-anticipated fashion show that featured MHHC employees on the runway.

The Mistress of Ceremonies for the event was New York 1 News Reporter and Bronx native Amy Yensi.

This year’s guest speaker included Consul General of Jamaica, Alsion Roach Wilson.

Funds raised through this year’s gala will help support the development of MHHC’s next IMPACTful initiative—The MHHC Integrative Health and Wellness Center, a new six-story, 62, 000 square foot health facility designed to foster good health and address the social risk factors that disproportionately impact residents in the Bronx. The new health center will offer clinical, preventive, community, and social services including but not limited to a senior center, child-care center, fitness center, financial and computer literacy, and a community meeting space, in high-need, low-income neighborhoods, all under one roof.

NYC Summer Restaurant Week returns

For those seeking summer bites in and around the Big Apple, the 30th annual NYC Restaurant Week will run July 18 thru 31.

More than 500 participating restaurants in all 5 boroughs will be offering 2 & 3-course prix fixe lunches and dinners at $30, $45 and $60 price points.

Each restaurant will set their own menu for the duration of the event. There are caveats, so patrons are advised to check ahead regarding menus, dates and serving times.

It offers a warn-chic bistro interior and cozy bar. There’s also a pleasant tented outdoor patio. Surrounding garden flowers are in full bloom. A long-standing favorite here is their signature Burger du Roi, prepared medium with bacon, Swiss cheese, and sunny side egg on top. To my memory, Le Jardin was one of the first to ‘throw an egg on it’, before the culinary concept became so commonplace. The large platter comes with French fries.
