Feds bust ‘shooter’ for cold case murder in Bronx park Feds say they cracked a cold case murder in a Bronx park from five years ago. Now a local man is facing life in prison.

Feds charged Bryant Brown, aka “Trigga,” with the murder of 21-year-old Albendris Nunez. Prosecutors said Nunez was fatally shot in Devoe Park on December 20, 2015.

US Attorney Geoffrey S. Berman an-

nounced the indictment of Brown in the fatal shooting.

“Albendris Nunez was 21 years old when he was murdered in Devoe Park,” Berman said. “As alleged in the indictment, Bryant Brown was responsible for that

murder. Thanks to our outstanding partners at the NYPD, Brown now faces federal charges for this terrible crime.”

Police Commissioner Dermot Shea said: “Early on a Sunday, Albendris Nunez was fatally shot on the street outside a Bronx park. Four years later, our police officers and detectives, working with our law en-

forcement partners, have brought justice and proven the effectiveness of our unrelenting focus on fighting violent crime.”

Prosecutors said Brown tried to rob Nunez inside Devoe Park. According to published reports Nunez tried to flee from the robber, he was shot in the back.

Brown is charged

with one count of attempted robbery, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, and one count of using a firearm to commit murder during a crime of violence, which carries a maximum penalty of death or life in prison, and a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison.

But many New Yorkers and those in urban areas may not have home computers nor access to reliable broadband.

Paper and phone options will still be available.

Census 2020 will count an increasingly diverse and growing population. Segments of the population are traditionally more difficult to count: young children, people living with men-

tal or physical disabilities, immigrants without documentation, communities of color, those living below the poverty level, those with a distrust of government, and others.

Lincoln Hospital is in a good position to assist the Census to reach “hard to count” individuals, to ensure an accurate and complete count. Because of the neighborhood’s trust in and need for the health professions, Lincoln is in a unique position with plans to assist by encouraging all individuals to participate in the count, and communicate to those who are hesitant.

8 injured as minor storm causes 20-car pile-up on Bronx River P’rkway

Slippery roads and poor visibility appear to be responsible for a 20-car pile-up on the Bronx River Parkway, in Woodlawn, that injured 8 people, including one seriously.

Firefighters and paramedics remove the injured as the Bronx River Parkway was shutdown for more than 5 hours.

Police say that at just after 1:30 p.m. on January 18, police were flooded with calls of a crash in the southbound lane of the Bronx River Parkway, between East 233 Street and East Gun Hill Road. EMS reported 8 individuals were removed to area hospitals, including one victim reported in serious condition.

Police, fire and paramedics identified, treated and removed those aided as people kept warm in their cars or walked around the closed highway as they waited hours for tow trucks to remove them.

Two victims of the crash were seen coming together and hugging in the middle of the shutdown south-

bound lane, before apparently walking over to their mangled car, with the bumper hanging off the vehicle.

According to the National Weather Service, only one-inch fell in the Bronx, but visibility at the time of the crash was reduced to 1/4 mile.

Driver Brandon DeShields told WCBS News, "I switched lanes, someone behind me ran into the back of my car and it caused me to slide and hit another car.”

The NYPD reported 15 cars were involved, but one local news crew had video of their count, that they put at 20.

The parkway was back open by 7 p.m.

3 suspects sought in Jerome Ave. robberies

By David Greene Police are actively looking for three suspects targeting Jerome Avenue shops in Norwood-- including one bandit who held up one shop twice.

On the morning of January 1st, 52nd Precinct Commanding Officer Deputy Inspector Thomas Alps Tweeted a photo of a suspect.

"Do you know him? He is wanted in connection to a commercial robbery that occurred on October 26."

Police spokeswoman and Detective Sophia Mason confirmed that the same individual robbed the Jerome Variety Shop, located at 3404 Jerome Avenue on October 26 and again on January 1. Mason stated on January 10, "There is no arrest on file regarding the robbery on October 26.”

Mason added, "The same suspect description was given for both incidents." She described the individual as a 6-foot tall black male, 160 pounds and wearing a black jacket.

According to the employee who was robbed both times at the Jerome Variety, the thief got away with $50 on October 26 and fled with $30 on New Year's morning.

The employee claimed police were given video of the suspect and police produced their own mug shot photo of the suspect, whom the employee identified. Asked why he thought police didn't mention the second robbery, he replied, "I don't know, you should ask

them.”

Police did put out wanted photos of the suspect along Jerome Avenue in November.

When asked why Inspector Alps failed to mention the second robbery in his Tweet, one community affairs officer from the 52nd Precinct responded, "Sorry, I don't have an answer to that.”

The victim added, "The first time he pulled a knife, but the second time no." He added, "I knew it was him when he first came in" during the second heist.

Meanwhile, police are also looking for the man and woman team who fled with a ring from Galaxy, a jewelry and electronics shop, located at 3412 Jerome Avenue on Sunday, January 5.

On the January 5 incident, Mason stated, "At just before 2 p.m. on January 5, 2020... an unknown female black wearing all black, was trying on a ring inside the location and fled the store with the property.

As police were investigating the theft at Galaxy, police were forced to multi-tasking as extra officers and paramedics were called, after a woman fainted next door at the ATM machines inside Chase Bank. The woman eventually recovered and refused medical attention.

One employee of a Jerome Avenue business,

stated, "The cops have to be more visible in the neighborhood. No, I don't see the police out here. I don't know what's going on. The Jerome Avenue Business Improvement District will let us know what's going on."

Asked if police conducted foot patrols in the weeks leading up to the holidays, the employee responded, "No, not really... you don't see them on a regular patrol here."

Firefighters were called to 2461 Hughes Avenue in Belmont at 11:20 a.m. on January 20, and discovered the damage. It was later determined that the bricks on the side of the building crashed to the ground and did not compromise the integrity of the building.

Local forecasters were reporting wind gusts up to 40 milesper-hour. No injuries were reported.

LGBT senior housing to open in Crotona

Time has run out to be a part of the Bronx’ first ever LGBT-welcoming affordable senior housing facility.

In order to qualify an applicant must have been 62 years of age or older by January 2020.

They must have an annual income of $37,350 or below if applying by themself. Or have an annual income of $42,700 or below if applying with a partner or spouse. If 3 people are in the household they must have a combined income of $48,050 to qualify.

The brand new housing will open in Crotona and will be the first of its kind in the Bronx.

However, it is not the first of its kind in terms of creating such housing for the agency. SAGE recently had a ribbon cutting for their site in Brooklyn.

The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), BFC Partners, SAGE, the New York City Housing Development Corporation (HDC), and the Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) celebrated the opening of Stonewall House, New York State’s first

LGBT-friendly affordable elder housing, in Fort Greene, Brooklyn.

It is the largest such development in the nation and is a fitting tribute to LGBT pioneers during this year – the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising.

Although New York’s housing affordability crisis impacts households of all backgrounds and demographics, older LGBT people are statistically more likely to face housing discrimination and harassment.

They are also less likely to have children or other family members to help provide for their needs as they age, exacerbating the crisis for the population.

Stonewall House, the first project to be completed under the NextGen NYCHA initiative, is a 17-story building at 112 St. Edwards St. in Fort Greene. It provides 145 units of affordable housing for households who earn 50 percent or less of the area median income and include at least one person who is 62-years-of-age or old-

Artist rendering er. The building has 54 studio and 91 one-bedroom apartments, and 25 percent of these homes will be occupied by formerly homeless households.

SAGE, the world’s largest and oldest organization dedicated to improving the lives of LGBT elder people, will operate the SAGE Center Brooklyn at Stonewall House, a 7,000 square-foot state community center located on the ground floor. The new center will open in early 2020.

“NYCHA is excited to bring affordable housing to New York City

seniors,” said NYCHA Senior Vice President for Real Estate Development Jonathan Gouvea.

“Our seniors deserve new, safe, clean affordable housing. This 100 percent affordable development is necessary and a great step forward for New York City.”

“We want all New Yorkers to feel secure and welcome in our city, and this historic development builds on our commitment to support LGBTQ+ communities and their families,” said First Lady Chirlane McCray.

“Stonewall House will provide residents with a safe en-

vironment and support system where they will be treated with respect and compassion. We are grateful to our partners at SAGE for their continued work in building LGBT senior affordable housing across the city.”

Stonewall House received financing from HPD’s Senior Affordable Rental Apartments (SARA) program, HDC, and Wells Fargo.

Outstanding receivables: Cash in the bank, if you collect them

Over the past 40 years, I have worked with over one thousand different medium and small companies.

If I were to identify one of the biggest problems (which represent opportunities) that are common to most of them, it is the lack of attention to receivables.

Some organizations are very lucky, or structured extremely well, because they operate a cash business or only see their products or services by credit card, check or ACH. However, a large percentage of businesses, mostly business to business companies, still operate the traditional way by selling a product or service and then billing their customer with the request that they be paid immediately upon receipt or within a 15- or 30-day period.

I have worked with clients who have come to me complaining they do not make enough money, only to find out upon our analysis that they have adequate sales and margins to earn a very respectful income, but they do not pay attention to their receivables.

One example is a New York City company that sold a product to restaurants and hotels in the greater New York City area. In the calendar year we were looking at they had approximately $350,000 in sales, a gross profit exceeding 90%, yet the owners were not re-

alizing any profits. Upon analysis, we found they had almost $170,000 in outstanding receivables, most of which were more than 60 days old.

You probably ask how something like this can happen! Basically, there are four major reasons, as follows: First, the salespeople considered their priorities to be selling, and they had no directive or responsibility for collecting the revenues they sold.

Second, the company sales recorded by customer just reflected the type of products they purchased, and amounts each week and the date the order was delivered.

Collections were not a part of the sales record for the client kept by the company.

Third, accounting department did not send out invoices on a timely basis, thus giving the customer additional time to pay a bill after they receive the invoice.

Fourth, the financial group did not publish an “aging report” on receivables on a regular basis.

For those who are not familiar with aging reports, it is a document that shows the payment status for each customer. Normally, these reports are based on current receivables (under 30 days), 31- 60 days, 6190 days and over 90 days outstanding. For example,

However, there is only $4,000 that is current, and they have $22,000 of their sales that are very old receivables which might never get collected.

Perhaps the customers are going out of business, or just have not been asked (sufficiently aggressively) to pay. In any case this is an aging report that portends significant problems and must be addressed immediately. With regard to re-

ceivables, there is a saying that everyone should keep in mind at all times: “RECEIVABLES DO NOT BUY GROCERIES” Said a different way, a sale means almost nothing until you have collected the money.

In a situation like the above, what can a company do to correct this problem? There are several: 1. Include collection on sales as a responsibility of the sales agent. Many organizations pay salespeople based on money collected rather than on sales generated.

2. Require the financial department to issue biweekly or monthly aging reports.

3. Assign an individual in the headquarters the responsibility for managing receivables so that adequate attention is placed on collections.

4. Finally, develop a company policy of not selling to any custom-

ers that have receivables more than “x” days old.

In summary, proper attention to receivables can be the difference between a financially successful organization or one that struggles to make payroll. Remember, collection of receivables goes right to the bottom line!
