Classless crash spared tragedy

reason why no one was killed was because it happened on a Sunday.

Police were called to Sedgwick Avenue and Hillman Avenue at just after 1 p.m. on January 5. The driver lost control of the vehicle and ended up on the sidewalk, no injuries were reported.

4 sought in Parkchester home invasion

By David Greene Police released surveillance video of four suspects wanted in connection with a home invasion robbery in Parkchester, that left their victim hospitalized nearly a week after the incident.

According to officials, police were called to 1469 West Avenue at Wood Road at 3:25 p.m. on January 7. The unidentified 53 year-old woman reported that a woman knocked on her door claiming to be with a home security company.

When the woman opened the door, three young men

pushed their way inside the apartment.

Police reported that the victim was repeatedly punched in the face. A second victim in the apartment was apparently not injured. The four suspects ransacked the apartment before fleeing, taking a designer handbag, two i-Pads, a computer tablet and a wallet.

One resident of the building stated, "Can you believe they claimed to be with a security company and they pushed their way inside."

The resident added that he had not seen the victim in the 5 days since her hospitalization.

On January 11, the NYPD released the building's surveillance video of the 4 suspects. One suspect is a black or Hispanic male, wearing an army-type jacket and work boots. A second suspect is a white or Hispanic female, wearing a black jacket and black baseball cap.

A third individual is a black male, wearing a dark jacket and hooded sweatshirt. The fourth subject is a black man wearing

a black and white jacket, a black cap and a red hooded sweatshirt underneath.

When asked to comment, a representative of Parkchester South Condominiums stated, "We cannot give out that information over the phone."

Asked if a comment could be obtained in person, the woman added, "No we cannot."

A driver calls for help after her vehicle got caught on the newly installed barrier at East Tremont Avenue and White Plains Road.

By David Greene Drivers in West Farms are encountering a new pedestrian barrier that if a driver accidentally hits the curb, is creating a new phenomenon, where the vehicle is propelled up onto the barrier. The vehicle is either stuck with two or three wheels completely off the ground, or the car is flipped over completely.

Harvey Grossman, a driver and owner of D-Cap Insurance on East Tremont Avenue recalled that the project was completed in September. Grossman explained, "There's been a minimum of seven instances," he says with a laugh, or about once a month since the project’s completion.

“They're making the left turn here," he continued, pointing to the

intersection, "and they don't really see it turning from East Tremont to White Plains Road," because oncoming traffic blocks the driver’s vision and they become stuck on the plastic barrier.

Asked why he thought the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) decided to erect the small barrier, Grossman replied, “I CONTINUED ON PAGE 8

heard it's happening up the block as well. Who the heck knows why, they reduced the road to one lane? I don't get it. They changed everything.”

A mile or so south of East Tremont the DOT recently completed a major project, the closing of the Sheridan Expressway and the creation of Sheridan Boulevard and along East Tremont and into Morris Park the DOT reduced the two lanes of traffic to one, as a method for "traffic calming.”

night and they had no reflectors or anything... and I hit it. Nothing happened, I think I bent my rim.”

He added, "People should complain more.”

One of the barriers on White Plains Road now has a giant traffic barrier over it, likely placed their by drivers who work in the area.

The DOT announced the Vision Zero-related project at the end

of August, stating that two dangerous intersections would get new traffic islands, extending cross walks for pedestrians and adding the problem-plagued, small pedestrian barrier.

The improvements were made along East Tremont Avenue at the intersections of East 180 Street, White Plains Road and Van Nest Avenue.

Edison workers were killed in a horrific crash at East Tremont Avenue and East 180 Street.

Shortly after the announcement City Councilman Richie Torres told News 12, "Speeding is so common on the East Tremont corridor. One study found that 69% of the drivers were above the speed limit.”

Torres also said at the time.

"We're going to manage to calm

traffic and reduce speeding without causing the loss of parking and travel lane.”

A request for comment was made with DOT on, January 13, and the DOT has not yet responded to the request.

Torres' office was also notified of the problem and his office vowed to look into the matter.

A similar project was completed along Third Avenue in October.

New Year begins with murder of aspiring Bronx River rapper

By David Greene Police continue to search for clues in the shooting death of an aspiring rapper in Soundview. The fatal shooting is believed to be the first homicide in New York City in 2020.

nings, 29, who had been shot in the head and neck inside his 3rd floor apartment.

He was declared dead at the scene.

Police immediately took Jennings' live-in girlfriend to the 43rd Precinct for questioning, though she was later released.

One resident who declined to be identified, stated, "He got out of prison last year and his father moved out, so he moved in with his mother." His mother died at the home in November.

Neighbors say Jennings worked in construction by day and in his spare time, concentrated on his music career as an aspiring rapper.

Norma Saunders, 51, the tenant association president for the building, who knew Jennings since he was a child, recalled, "He was a good kid, he wanted to be a big time rapper.”

Saunders recalled, "Twenty-twenty was going to be his year.

Basically, it's a sad situation right now.”

Speaking of the Bronx River Houses, Saunders added,

"I've been here all my life and this has been one of the worst years I have ever seen it here."

Saunders mentioned a homicide, where a baby was thrown from a window and a serious fire, taking place during the past calendar year.

Meanwhile, Mayor Bill de Blasio and newly appointed Police Commissioner Dermot Shea came to the Bronx to announce the year's crime statistics during a town hall meeting at the New Settlement Houses.

Officials reported that as of December 29, there were 299 murders across the five boroughs, compared with 275 from 2018, an 8.7% increase despite the fact that the NYPD had reported a drop in homicides during the first 6-months of the year, with 135 reported as of June 30.

Felony assaults were also on the rise, but most other crime statistics categories were down over the previous year.

Why not take a few minutes over the next few days and think about the business, so you can develop one or more RESOLUTIONS addressing some of the following key questions: What can I do to operate more efficiently during the year so that I have more time for my family, my hobbies or my social life.

Is it possible to raise my prices now, so I can generate more revenue for the same amount of effort?

So many businesses are afraid to raise prices as they fear customer loss. However, if you approach this question from the perspective of increasing only a few percentage points each year, it is likely that customers will not even recognize the change, or care about it.

In my next column I will discuss some key elements and consideration of an effective EXIT PLAN. What do you feel might be the best way to seek growth in my business during the current year? Specifically, should I be targeting different prospects, add new lines to my business, or improve my selling efforts.

How could I get more customers in the coming year? Should I spend more on advertising, or advertise and promote using different vehicles. Perhaps this is the year I make a real commitment to

digital marketing, social media and website enhancement.

This list could go on forever, but the key is to take time now to analyze your business and make some resolutions that will improve your situation in the months ahead. Normally the New Year’s period is a unique time when we can THINK and PLAN, so do yourself a favor and MAKE A NEW YEARS RESOLUTION FOR YOUR BUSINESS.

2020 Vision: Starting the New Year with eye health

By Fatima Shell-Sanchez, Registered Nurse, Visiting Nurse Service of New York As we begin a new year, many will vow to make better decisions for their health and wellness, but how often is a visit to an eye doctor included in one’s health-maintenance agenda?

Studies show five main reasons respondents did not have their eyes examined in the last three or more years were: • No problems with their eyes or vision.

• Did not get around to it.

• Cost/Exam not covered by insurance.

• Purchasing reading glasses over the counter was easier.

All of these can have dangerous consequences for older adults and their overall health. Maintaining good vision is especially important for older adults, who are at increased risk for age-related eye conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease. Poor vision can also lead to non-eye related repercussions and elevated risk for falls, social isolation and decreased independence.

Even in the year 2020, not everyone—especially seniors—can depend on 20/20 vision! As a registered nurse with the Visiting Nurse Service of New York (VNSNY) my colleagues and I care for older patients with declining vision every day. We work

to help our patients understand the importance of maintaining good health and eyesight as they age.

Here are a few guidelines that can help ensure you or a loved one are staying on top of eye health throughout the new year.

• Knowledge is Power: Many do not realize their vision is poor until they receive a proper eye exam. In just a few minutes, a proper assessment can make a lifetime of improvement. It is important to complete regularly scheduled eye exams every six to 12 months for those patients over the age of 65. Additionally, make sure to get any kind of eye irritation checked out immediately. You should also ask your doctor about glaucoma–which can include symptoms of blurred vision, eye pain, light sensitivity, and problems with glare–and know your risk factors for the disease.

January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month–a great time to check in on your health!

• Protecting Your Peepers: Knowledge without action is fruitless. Make sure to keep on top of eye appointments, wear eye-

glasses or contact lenses as directed by your physician, take medications if prescribed, and apply eye-drops for alleviation of dry or irritated eyes.

Eye lids and lashes should also be kept clean, as bacterial infections can cause pain, inflammation, obstruction in vision, and in some cases, even vision loss. It’s important to remove all eye makeup before a night’s sleep, clear eyes of all excrements that may develop overnight, and regularly clean contact lenses. As eye health declines with age, maintenance is key!

• Living with Impairment: Vision decline may be an adjustment, but there are a variety of tools and resources that can help you cope and maintain a comfortable level of vision. I usually recommend patients get magnifiers or computer text enlargers to reduce stress caused from frequent squinting and straining to read. Additionally, if you happen to have one, iPads and other large-screen tablets have been known to enhance visual clarity as they allow for a high contrast, crisp display. Too much screen time, however, can cause sore, sensitive eyes, and headaches.

Utilize screen brightness customization on your devices and practice the 20-20-20 rule (looking at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds, every 20 minutes) to reduce ocular

strain.

• Learn Eye-Drop Installation: It can be extremely difficult to apply eye drops properly, especially for an older individual living alone. Due to these challenges, it can be helpful to have the assistance of home health aides, such as those at Partners in Care, a licensed home care agency that is a part of VNSNY. A home health aide or family caregiver can help ensure that correct drops dosages are administered. Proper eye drop administration is quite simple: tilting your head back, you should form a pocket in your eye by pulling your lower eyelid down and gently squeezing the bottle directly over the eyelid pocket. It is also beneficial to keep your eyes closed for two minutes after receiving the drops, to ensure effectiveness of the medication.

• Healthy Lifestyle Modifications: Everyday changes to your nutrition and lifestyle can also improve your eye health.

Caffeine can increase eye pressure, so it is im-

portant to be mindful and modify intake if needed.

Hypertension and diabetes can also poorly affect eyesight, especially for glaucoma sufferers, who should do their best to maintain a healthy weight and keep blood pressure at normal levels.

Eating lots of fruits and vegetables with vitamins A, C, D, E, and Zinc supports ocular health. Also, don’t forget to always wear sunglasses outdoors to protect your eyes!

While most vision loss cannot be regained, there are treatment options that can help preserve visual function. It is important to remember to always communicate with your entire care team if something seems amiss with your vision. We recommend that all our patients over the age of 65 make regularly scheduled visits to the ophthalmologist as part of their routine healthcare maintenance.

Montefiore celebrates a decade connecting patients to housing and improving health outcomes

By Keona Serrano, Project Manager, Montefiore Housing at Risk Program When people face housing insecurity, their health often takes a back seat. Research shows that housing insecurity is one of the top barriers to improved health outcomes. People facing eviction, living on the streets, living in shelters, living in overcrowded apartments with family, couch surfing, or renting are all at risk for poor health.

Since 2009, Montefiore Health System’s Housing at Risk Program has been working to improve the situation by providing coordinated health and housing support to patients in the Bronx. The Housing at Risk team — Director Deirdre Sekulic, Project Manager Keona Serrano and Social Worker Madeline Gotay — help Montefiore patients with their housing dilemmas, with the goal of reducing avoidable Emergency Depart-

ment visits and hospital stays.

Many patients are referred by social workers, but Montefiore has also created an automated alert system to identify patients in the Emergency Department who may be in housing situations that effects their health, enabling the team to proactively reach out and offer support.

The team works handin-hand with nurses, physicians and other health care providers to make

appointments, schedule medical transportation and follow up about care plans. This is all in an effort to give patients access to preventative care and to pull them out of the cycle of waiting until their health deteriorates and they need emergency care. The team also has strong connections to a variety of Bronx community-based organizations to support patients with unstable housing.

Since the program was created, the Montefiore Housing at Risk team has addressed the needs of hundreds of patients.

They have successfully gained stable housing through intensive interventions such as assessments, phone calls, visits and accompanying patients to other agencies to receive benefits.

As 2020 begins, the Housing at Risk Program will continue its dedication to this important program, looking for even more ways to address housing issues that may prevent Montefiore patients from improving their health and overall quality of life.

Chef/proprietor Sal Cucullo Jr. of The 808 Bistro in Scarsdale, has introduced tempting new seasonal menus for lunch, dinner and weekend brunch along with prix fixe options.

Approaching their 10TH year, this eclectic Italian and American-fusion eatery on Scarsdale Ave. in Scarsdale, became a hotspot practically overnight. The cozy bar glows in a rainbow of alternating colors. Glistening ceramic and metal tiles highlight the 50-seat dining room wall and ceiling. There are modern artworks and lighting, a perfect palette for the vibrant dishes emanating from the kitchen. Silver metal chairs softened by stressed leather seats offer comfort, as does the friendly

staff. It’s a Manhattan vibe and it’s all kept properly casual.

Chef Cucullo is a C.I.A. graduate who practically grew up in restaurants, working kitchens owned by his Italian family as well venues of every stripe. He knows how to cook Italian, but for as long as I have known him his creativity has never been bound by culinary borders. He can knock out a delicious version of Grandma’s Gnocchi in a basil-pomodoro sauce one moment, and in another prepare a decadent Baked Macaroni and Cheese with chunks of lobster and shrimp, infused with truffle oil, that will propel you to foodie heaven.

to the max so enjoy an opening round while scanning the menu. Forty-five Bronx restaurants and craft breweries participating included: Artie’s Steak & Seafood; Mike’s Deli; Jake’s Steakhouse; Havana Café; and Bronx Brewery.
