Still no arrests in ‘bloody baby’ left outside Congressman’s office

By David Greene The NYPD is currently looking for the vandals who left a baby doll splashed with red paint outside of the office of Congressman Richie Torres (D15) sometime during the Christmas holiday weekend.

According to one police source a "criminal mischief' complaint was filed. According to that report officers from the 48th Precinct were called to Torres' office at 540 East Fordham Road.

The police official told the Bronx Voice, "A 61-year-old male left his office. On Tuesday, December 26, at approximately

7:00 a.m., the male returned to his office and discovered red paint on the front gate of the location." The official noted that no arrests have been made and the investigation remains ongoing.

On December 26, Torres took to X, posting, "On Christmas Day, anti-Israel extremists vandalized my Bronx office with red paint, symbolizing blood. Covered in "blood" is a doll meant to symbolize Jesus, whom the vandals describe as a 'Palestinian child messiah.' The escalation in intimidation and incitement against members of Congress feels like it is heading

in a dangerous direction. I, for one, will not be intimidated.”

Janet Clarke of Norwood who was one of the organizers of two protests outside of Torres' office over his support and funding of Israel's bombing campaign in Gaza, said of Torres, "Richie Torres regularly smears his Jewish, people of color and LGBTQ constituents, shutting down his office to avoid facing them, illegally blocking them on social media, and applauding security personnel when they use unnecessarily rough tactics to silence and remove them from other venues.”

Clarke continued, "His re-

sponse to what was left on Christmas is revealing: In his Tweet about it, Torres intentionally omitted the sign above which read,'Bethlehem where Jesus was born is in Palestine. 9,000-plus kids in Gaza murdered by Israel with support from Richie Torres.'

Those statistics are horrifically correct and increasing daily." She added, "Torres' dodging of such human rights tragedies demonstrates that he cares more for a doll and paint than actual human lives in the Bronx or Palestine.”

The Bronx Voice made numerous requests for comment to Rep. Torres, but his office has not responded.

Moped riding crook makes off with church safe

By Dan Gesslein A homeless man was arrested for stealing a safe from a Bronx church. Cops said the suspect made off with the safe on the back of a moped.

The NYPD announced the arrest of 36-year-old Jonathan Delvalle, a homeless man. He was charged with attempted burglary.

At around noon on December 3, the suspect

forcibly opened the basement door to the church Place of Worship Church of God in the East Tremont section of the Bronx.

Cops said the thief removed a safe from inside the church and carried it outside.

Surveillance video shows the suspect laboring to lift the safe off the ground and place it on the back of his moped. Cops said the suspect then drove off with the safe.

However, the joke is apparently on the thief because cops said the

safe contained no cash.

The safe is said to have contained business documents and other items.

The suspect is described as a male with a light complexion who is 5 foot 10.

He was last seen wearing a black jacket, blue pants and black shoes.

Murder charges in road rage crash

By David Greene A Pennsylvania woman has been indicted on murder and manslaughter charges for “intentionally” running down a moped driver, the Bronx District Attorney’s Office announced.

Lillibeth Vasquez, 28, of Allentown, PA, was arraigned on second degree murder and first-degree manslsaughter charges. Prosecutors charge that Vaaquez purposely ran over Robert Jiminez during a road rage incident.

Police officers from the 41st Precinct were called to the accident scene at 871 Intervale Avenue

at Fox Street, at 2:22 p.m. on Saturday, November 25.

A police source told the Bronx Voice at the time, “A preliminary investigation determined that a 28-year-old female operating a Honda Civic was traveling southbound on Fox Street when it struck a 23-year-old male operating a moped traveling in the same direc-

tion.”

According to an investigation Vasquez chased after Jiminez when the man was driving his moped close to the defendant’s red Honda Civic. Prosecutors said Vasquez chased after the victim through two red lights and speeding the wrong way down a one-way street.

Prosecutors said Vasquez crashed into the back of Jiminez’ moped. The collision sent the victim through the air and crashing into a brick building on Intervale Avenue and Fox Street. Investigators said the impact killed Jiminez.

the building. Photos of the mangled up car appeared in an issue of the Bronx Voice.

“This driver’s wanton disregard for other people on the streets of the Bronx allegedly led to one death

and could have had further catastrophic consequences,” said Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark.

Keeping nightlife safe in New York City

By Mayor Eric Adams New York City is the city that never sleeps. We are a 24-hour city that is the nightlife capital of the world. And we remain the safest big city in America.

When I came into office two years ago, we had a mission: Protect public safety, revitalize the economy, and make this city more livable for hardworking New Yorkers.

Our bars, restaurants, music venues, and nightclubs employ workers across the city and are home to every level of our live performance industry.

But across the five boroughs, local residents often deal with noise, trash, and crime from nightlife.

Complaints can lead to unannounced inspections that shutter nightlife businesses, sometimes permanently.

Just because our nightlife establishments throw a great party, residents and businesses should not be

stuck with a hangover the next day. We want to protect public safety, while keeping our nightlife businesses open.

So, last week, I joined the owners of the nightlife venue, Paragon in Brooklyn, to announce a new public safety program to keep our nightlife venues safe. CURE, or Coordinating a United Resolution with Establishments, brings together the NYPD, Small Business Services, and the Office of Nightlife to improve public safety CONTINUED ON PAGE 9

responses to nightlife establishments and better

engage business owners by focusing on compliance and education, not punitive enforcement.

Previously, nightlife establishments had faced unannounced, late night, multi-agency inspections, through a program created in the 90s called MARCH. We heard directly from the nightlife industry that this program wasn’t working. We listened to our business owners and residents, and together with multiple agencies, we went to work to make sure we were improving safety while keeping nightlife venues open.

CURE creates direct lines of communication between the Office of Nightlife and local establishments and gives businesses a chance to correct issues before enforcement takes place. No more demonizing nightlife in our city. When a noise

complaint or trash complaint about a venue comes in, we will work with businesses to resolve the issues, so residents can have peace of mind and quiet and businesses can keep their doors open. CURE is how we protect pub-

lic safety, cut red tape, ensure better quality of life, and keep business doors open.

And it is all part of our efforts to drive down crime while supporting our local economy and making our city more livable. This year, jobs

are up, and crime is down, our streets are cleaner, and we remain the safest big city in America.

We are going to continue to roll out programs that make living in this city easier for residents and business owners —

programs that make our neighborhoods quieter, keep our streets clean, support small businesses, and reduce crime.

And we are creating a better-quality of life for everyone who lives, rests, and plays in our city.

One of the most common vulnerable groups of people, like people rheumatologic conditions with chronic illnesses. that affect kids in the Bronx While flu can affect anyone, it is much more likely to lead to severe illness in people with chronic conditions.

This is why if you or your child have a chronic medical condition, it is probable that your doctor will ask, “have you had a flu shot this season?”

As a pediatric rheumatologist, taking care of kids and young adults with autoimmune and inflammatory conditions, where the conditions themselves and the medications we use to treat them can impact how sick people get from common infections, this is certainly one of the first questions I am asking my patients in clinic this week.

During the 2022-2023 flu season over 24,000 people were hospitalized in New York State. The weekly rate peaked the week of December 10th last year at just un-

der 53,000 cases. The peak of the 2023-2024 flu season was estimated to come early January. And those of us working in hospitals are seeing this peak in action. According to the New York State Influenza Surveillance Report, the last week of December 2023 was the 6th straight week of high or widespread flu activity, with the number of people hospitalized steeply increasing from the previous weeks.

Likely the best protective measure that we have against severe flu, is the flu vaccine.

Yet, uptake of the flu vaccine is less than optimal, sometimes because of myths or misconceptions around its risks and benefits. One of the persistent concerns that exists in autoimmune and rheumatology patient communities is that vaccines, such as the flu vaccine, may lead to disease flares or worsening

is childhood-onset lupus - an autoimmune disorder where the

body's immune system attacks the body's tissues and cells, leading to issues like fatigue, chronic joint inflammation and pain that can impact their daily living. Lupus in anyone, but especially in children, can cause permanent damage to almost any part or organ of the body.

Unchecked, lupus can lead to permanent damage and even death. Controlling the condition is not just important to allow kids to have relief from pain and discomfort; it is crucial to ensure that long-term complications and damage do not develop and to make sure that kids with lupus can live long, healthy lives. This is why parents and doctors spend a lot of time and energy considering all the ways they can prevent kids with lupus from flaring. One important thing we can do to help protect these kids this season from getting serious flu infections AND

from getting lupus flares, is by vaccinating them with the flu shot.

What else can we do to protect kids with lupus? We can work to vaccinate the people around them, as well. The more close contacts who are vaccinated against flu, the less likely people are to transmit the virus to the child.

The Centers for Disease Prevention and Control recommend that all people 6 months and older (with few exceptions) get vaccinated against influenza as early in the season as possible. And even though it’s January, it’s not too late to get vaccinated. Flu can linger as late as May, so any protection now is better than none.

But the longer you wait in the season, the less benefit you get and the more likely you are to get the virus unprotected.

If you and your child got flu vaccines last year, you may

wonder why you need to get them again this year. Each year different strains of flu circulate and the exact strains of flu the vaccine protects you from are different, based on the predictions of scientists who study viruses and their spread.

New violations found at site of building collapse

By David Greene Inspectors from the Department of Buildings have issued 10 additional violations to the owner of a building that partially collapsed on December 11—miraculously, only two people suffered minor injuries.

The 10 new violations pertain to unpermitted construction and illegal conversions of apartments. The illegal renovations include plumbing and electrical work in multiple apartments. The owner of the building was

also charged with creating additional illegal apartments in the basement.

Additional violations were issued for an obstructed fire escape and failure to provide an unobstructed exit to those illegal basement apartments.

Inspectors do not believe that these violations contributed to the collapse.

Meanwhile, the Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) issued the following statement: “HPD’s Emergency Housing Services team is urgently working to help these and other families in emergency shelter this holiday season find and secure stable housing using all available avenues and resources.”

The HPD statement con-

cluded, “This will not be an easy process and it will take time, but we are committed to helping people get into safe, and reliable housing as soon as possible."

The Department of Buildings has stated that they will expedite safety inspection requests from the landlord in an effort to get residents back into the building as quickly as possible.

A day after the collapse The Bronx Voice witnessed workers from the Red Cross bringing bottled water to displaced residents who were temporarily housed at the Roscoe C. Brown, Jr., Student Center on the campus of Bronx Community College as members of the media were stationed outside.

Former Bronxite William Jennings, a member of the Carpenters Union Local # 45, now living in New Jersey, had to visit the building at 1915 Billingsley Terrace a day after the collapse.

Jennings told the Bronx Voice, “The workers and management should have seen certain things that might have been a problem.” He added, “A lot of times we see things before a problem arises. So instead of taking a short cut, like a lot of these contractors and developers do, they (the workers) should have said, ‘I’m not going to work until this is fixed.’”

According to Department of Buildings records, the building currently has 23 open violations that include working without a permit and an unsafe construction site.

The +Pool will be tried in the late spring of 2024 and, in the wake of satisfying all wellbeing and security necessities, is planned to be opened to general society one year from now. To assist with guaranteeing drifting pools meet all suitable general wellbeing guidelines, the New York State Branch of Wellbeing is delivering new direction covering this new classification of pools.
