By David Greene After several weeks of seeking information and comment on a new safety improvement that has drivers fuming-the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) has stated they have had no complaints from drivers and the program is citywide.

A vehicle struck the traffic island and got caught on the pedestrian barrier at White Plains Road.

In early January, Harvey Grossman, a driver and owner of D-Cap insurance on East Tremont Avenue provided several photos of different vehicles that struck the curb on a newly installed traffic island and the vehicles were then caught on a 2-foot plastic bumper, a barrier designed to protect pedestrians.

Or as Grossman stated, about one crash a month.

The spokesperson also didn't mention if these bumpers were involved in these crashes or the cause of them.

The statement concluded, "These types of bollards work to deter speeding and turning vehicles from entering pedestrian spaces and are at numerous locations throughout the borough and citywide.”

Restaurant owner gets 20 yrs for killing employee’s husband

Couple went to Bronx eatery to ask for her check

A former restaurant owner will spend the next 20 years in prison during a fight over money which left a Bronx man dead. The victim and the defendant argued when he came to pick up his wife’s check. Prosectors said the gun went off during the fight.

Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark said, “The defendant, a restaurant owner, shot his former employee’s husband when they

went to pick up her paycheck. The defendant took a life because of a disagreement over money. He will now spend many years in

prison for his actions.”

District Attorney Clark said the defendant, Kenton Connerly, 52, of Port Chester, N.Y., was sentenced to 20 years in prison and five years’ post-release supervision by Bronx Supreme Court Justice Alvin Yearwood. The defendant was found guilty by a jury of first-degree Manslaughter and two counts of Criminal

Possession of a Weapon on December 13, 2019.

According to the investigation, on the evening of September 29, 2017, the victim, Lorenzo Daley, 29, went to the defendant’s restaurant, “Simply Seafood” located on 2542B White Plains Road, with his wife, a former employee, to retrieve her paycheck.

An altercation erupted

between Connerly and Daley, and Daley and his wife stepped outside of the restaurant and the defendant followed with a gun. Connerly pistol-whipped Daley in the head and the firearm went off once, striking the victim in the neck. Daley was taken to Jacobi Medical Center where he was pronounced dead a couple of hours after the incident.

Combating Coronavirus BRONX VOICE City outlines ways to cope GLM:

Mayor Bill deBlasio announced that two additional people in New York City have been identified for testing for the novel coronavirus. Both individuals, who are over 60-yearsold, had recently been in mainland China and presented with fever and cough or shortness of breath without another common cause, like influenza and other cold viruses, identified on testing.

The first individual has been hospitalized at Flushing Hospital Medical Center. The second is hospitalized at New York-Presbyterian Queens. Both are in stable condition. Testing to

determine whether these are confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus will take a minimum of 36-48 hours and depends on CDC testing capacity.

With the best public health system in the world, New York City stands ready to respond to any confirmed cases of the coronavirus,” said de Blasio. “I urge all New Yorkers to remain vigilant, and if you or anyone you know matches the criteria and have recently traveled to the affected areas of China, please see a medical professional.”

“We are continuing to work closely with our partners at the CDC,

State and federal government as the coronavirus situation evolves,” said Health Commissioner Dr. Oxiris Barbot.

“If you have traveled to the area affected by the outbreak in the last 14 days and feel unwell, call your doctor or visit a clinic, and you will be cared for. Also, practice everyday precautions like you would during flu season — wash your hands frequently, and cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze.

least 300 people have died. The first person under investigation for the novel coronavirus in New York City remains at Bellevue Hospital and in stable condition.

The Health Department has not received results of the CDC test, and will share information about the test as soon as the results are provided.

Cases under investigation should not be presumed as likely to be confirmed. As of January 31 — the latest available national numbers from CDC on cases under investigation — only six of the 120 specimens tested were identified as novel coronavirus.

The novel (new) coronavirus is a strain of coronavirus that has not been previously detected in humans. This novel coronavirus can lead to symptoms of fever, cough or shortness of breath. While some infections have resulted in severe illness, and even death, others have presented with milder symptoms and been discharged from care.

Bikes, not drones solution to delivery problems?

Cargo bikes for delivery companies making tests in NYC

Amazon, DHL and UPS will test cargo bikes in New York City as alternatives to traditional delivery vans in a pilot project city officials hope will result in reduced congestion, improved air quality and a safer environment for pedestrians.

Amazon will begin by using 90 bikes to help deliver groceries out of three Whole Foods locations. DHL will start with three bikes making deliveries out of its Manhattan service center. UPS said it would use “a few cargo bikes” during the pilot. All three said they planned to scale up their use over time.

The Department of Transportation (DOT) pilot will last for six months and could be extended depending on the results, the city said in a press release. The DOT will monitor variables like speed, parking and use of bike lanes with an aim to “better under-

stand whether cargo bicycles can successfully fit into the City’s streetscape.”​ All three of these companies have used delivery bikes in other cities around the world. DHL uses them in Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands and Singapore, according to Bruce Marsh, senior manager of corporate public policy at DHL. UPS operates the bikes in 30 cities around the world, a spokesperson told Supply Chain Dive in an email. Amazon has tested them out in Europe.

Solving the Parking Predicament Companies say cargo bikes could save time on deliveries because drivers won’t have to worry about dealing with one of New York City’s most precious resources: parking space.

The bikes will have a few different parking options available to them. The city is going to set up corrals

where these bikes will be able to park when loading and unloading, which will be in more high-traffic areas.

The bikes can park on the sidewalk as long as they keep enough of the walkway free in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The bikes can park, without charge, in the same loading and unloading zones used by traditional delivery vans. Determining where the bikes will park, though, is an ongoing process the city could change as a result of the pilot project.

“Our intention is this will help actually speed up delivery,” Marsh said. “It will also help us in terms of our parking fines. The city has also gotten very aggressive in terms of parking and parking management and so this will help us on that end too.”

All three of these companies and New York City also have plans to

reduce their greenhouse gas emissions in the coming years. Everyone involved said new delivery methods like these electric bikes will be part of making those cuts a reality.

“Our climate pledge goal is net-zero carbon for the entire company by 2040,” Tom Chandlee, a senior program manager for sustainable transportation at Amazon, told Supply Chain Dive in an interview.

“So not just the logistics business, but also AWS and the data centers, device production, etc.

But regardless of what type of operation, we’re committed to making actual changes within our business, in order to eliminate the carbon emissions associated with it, as opposed to offsets outside of our business.”

DHL began looking into using cargo bikes in New York City two years ago as part of its

GoGreen initiative, which aims to reduce its logistics emissions to zero by 2050. But at the time, electric bikes were illegal in the city. DHL began meeting with state and local officials around the same time the city began talking about trying to reduce truck congestion and emissions.

“It was good timing,” Marsh said. “Earlier this year they started allowing e-bikes and then they reached out to us ... when they were ready to start looking exploring a pilot.”

Amazon said its delivery bikes have been on the street in New York City since last February.

It could still be a few weeks before DHL and UPS bikes are seen on the street. Marsh said DHL’s formal deal with the city should be finalized soon.

By David Greene A West Farms driver was injured by flying glass when a stray bullet shattered her windshield.

At 7:45 p.m. on January 23, police and paramedics were called to Hughes Avenue and East 179 Street, in

the West Farms section. Police immediately discovered the bloody woman, believing she had been shot.

Detectives on the scene investigating a shooting that left one man and an innocent bystander wounded on Hughes Avenue.

The unidentified 34-year-old victim was rushed to Jacobi Hospital and was expected to recover. Police say she was an "innocent bystander.”

The 17-yearold male victim was discovered inside a building, he had been shot in the leg.

He was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital and was also expected to recover.

Police have no motive and were looking for the

gunman, described as a male Hispanic, wearing a black jacket, blue sweatpants and royal blue sneakers.

Police shut down Hughes Avenue for several hours as investigators retrieved shell-casings and other evidence from the scene as an NYPD helicopter kept watch from above.

The gunman possibly fled on a bicycle.

Former NYPD Sergeant killed in Co-op City fire

A former police sergeant was killed and three others were injured after an early morning fire in Co-op City.

Firefighters were called to an 11th-floor apartment at 120 Casals Place, at just before 3 a.m. on January 20.

Firefighters discovered a 49-year-old woman suffer-

ing from smoke inhalation in the lobby and later discovered the woman's 85-year-old father inside the apartment. Both were rushed to Jacobi Hospital.

man, later identified as retired NYPD Sergeant and US Army veteran Bernard Edwards, 85, was found unresponsive in a re-

clining chair and died a short time later at Jacobi Hospital.

Two firefighters also suffered minor injuries. After a preliminary

investigation, officials say the fire was deemed accidental and smoke detectors were working inside the apartment.

Robbery suspect NOT arrested

By David Greene An apparent human error is to blame for a Twitter post on the NYPD's 52nd Precinct feed that stated a suspect in a recent robbery and assault of a pregnant woman, inside an elevator at Tracy Towers, was sent in error and the suspect is not in custody.

On January 8, the NYPD 52nd Precinct Tweeted a previously released photo of the female robbery suspect wanted in the December 23 assault and robbery of a 40-year-old female victim inside of 40 West Mosholu Parkway South, with red letters across the photo, stating, “Apprehended."

The Tweet stated, "This individual wanted for ROBBERY has been apprehended.

Thanks to all involved.”

However, after repeated inquiries an unnamed official at 1 Police Plaza emailed a reply on January 27, that stated, "The tweet was posted in error.

There are no arrests in connection to the robbery described and the investigation is ongoing.”

At the time of the incident police stated, "The victim entered an elevator with an unknown female individual. The victim and female got into a verbal dispute which escalated into a physical confrontation.

One resident of the building, who declined to be identified, claimed that there have been several home invasions in the building over the last couple of years. The resident asked, "Why do we have security?" That claim could not immediately be confirmed by the NYPD. Anyone with infor-

mation in regard to this incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1 (800) 577-TIPS, all calls remain confidential. A $2,500 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual.

In another recent posting from the NYPD's 52nd Precinct Twitter feed, posted a photo of a suspect wanted for the October 26, knife-point robbery of the Jerome Variety Shop, at 3404 Jerome Avenue. The January 1st post failed to mention that the suspect had returned New Year's morning and robbed the store a second time.

Flu season reminders for seniors

illnesses and 8,200 deaths in the United States from the flu so far this season, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and every year, the flu kills roughly 35,000 Americans–that’s a lot of coughing, sneezing and feeling run down! New Yorkers of all ages need to stay mindful and protect themselves from airborne illnesses like the flu, and the coronavirus, both of which are making headlines across the globe these days.

Because the body’s immune defenses weaken with age, seniors are at increased risk for catching the flu, which can lead to serious health complications, such as pneumonia and other life-threatening conditions.

As a Registered Nurse with the Visiting Nurse Service of New York, I work to

help the older New Yorkers in my care, and their family caregivers, understand the risks associated with the influenza virus what they can do to stay healthy and flufree.

Flu prevention isn’t complicated, and most of us have heard the drill a thousand times, but it’s important to remember that a few simple measures can help keep you and your loved ones from being side-lined by serious illness as the 2020 flu season shifts into high gear: First Line of Defense The best way to protect yourself and your loved ones from the flu is to get your yearly flu shot. Getting the flu vaccine not only protects you, but also prevents you from spreading the flu to your loved ones.

The CDC recommends that people six months of age and older should get a flu vaccine as soon as the current season’s vaccines are available.

Medicare will cover the flu vaccine once

every flu season, while many local pharmacies and community organizations in your area provide free flu shots.

People ages 65 and older should especially be vaccinated, as the flu can worsen symptoms of chronic conditions that many seniors are already living with.

Recognize Your Symptoms Unlike a cold that comes on gradually, the flu begins suddenly with a headache, chills, and a cough.

Make sure you’re aware of flu symptoms which can be often mistaken for a simple stomach bug or the common cold, and contact your care provider if symptoms worsen or you are at high risk of flu complications: *Chills and shakes with the fever *Extreme fatigue *Headaches and body aches *Dry, hacking cough *Sore throat *Vomiting and Belly Pain Practice Good Health Habits

There are several everyday steps you can take to ensure that you don’t affect those around you or worsen your symptoms. These are all tips that we’ve heard before at some point or another, but they remain important to keep in mind: *Wash your hands often with antibacterial soap and water, especially after you cough, sneeze, or shake hands. *Avoid close contact with sick people. *Avoid touching your face! Habits like touching your eyes can act as a welcoming mat for the flu virus. *Drink plenty of fluids and eat healthful foods rich in vitamins such as citrus, like grapefruits and tangerines.

*Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, and throw away the tissue immediately after use.

If you have not had a flu shot, wear a surgical face mask to prevent viral transmission that can be caused by coughing, sneezing, or speaking.

Drink plenty of water and other clear fluids to avoid dehydration.

Contact your doctor right away if you start to feel flu-like symptoms.

Rest for at least an additional 24 hours after the flue subsides in order for your body to regain strength.

Advanced treatment options are saving lives at Montefiore

By Dr. Edwin Ho, co-director, Heart Valve/Structural Heart Center, Montefiore Einstein Center for Heart & Vascular Care Diseases of the heart valves are common and tend to affect more people as they get older. This can include valve narrowing, leaking, or a combination of both.

Individuals develop these conditions either because they were born with an abnormal heart valve or because of wear and tear that happens slowly over time.

While symptoms of a heart valve problem are variable, the most common reported symptoms are related to those that limit exertion, including shortness of breath, fatigue, lightheadedness and chest pain.

Heart valve disease is always followed by a care team specializing in cardiovascular medicine and is treated with medicines if

needed.

In the past, if medicines were not enough to treat these valve problems, the only additional option was open heart surgery. This is when a surgeon will open the chest to directly repair or replace a heart valve.

In the last decade, many advances in technology have allowed doctors to now fix many common valve problems using minimally invasive techniques. These are often referred to as “transcatheter” options and are generally able to avoid opening the chest. Many are performed through a blood vessel in the groin area instead. Special devices can be brought to the heart through these blood vessels and allow doctors to repair or replace valves.

Advances in structural heart imaging, in particular, are allowing more procedures to be developed and

performed to solve certain valve conditions that previously had limited treatment strategies.

Patients who might benefit from these treatments are those with valve problems that need more than medicines, but may be at increased risk for conventional open surgery or who do not want open surgery after a discussion with their cardiac care team. Specific advantages and disadvantages of different treatment options are evaluated on a case by case basis, because many factors need to be considered.

One example of a commonly performed minimally invasive valve treatment in the United States is called transcatheter aortic valve replacement, or “TAVR.” This is performed to treat a dangerously narrowed aortic valve, which is the last of the four main valves of the

heart that blood will travel through before exiting the heart and entering the rest of the body. A specially developed artificial heart valve is compressed and brought to the heart through a blood vessel (usually from the leg) and implanted inside the existing narrowed valve.

Montefiore Health System is able to offer a wide variety of options for treating heart valve disease, including both conventional open surgery as well as newer transcatheter technologies.

Some of these are well established techniques used every day all around the world, while others are more novel and offer options to patients who previously had very few or none at all.

tors and nurse practitioners with expertise in the treatment of heart valve disease.

This includes doctors with subspecialized training in interventional cardiology, cardiac surgery and cardiac imaging, all key components in evaluating patients so that the best treatment options for each individual person can be recommended and performed.

case novel coronavirus — within 14 days of symptom onset, the CDC recommends: * Seek medical care right away.

Before going to a doctor’s office or emergency room, call ahead and tell them about recent travel and symptoms. * Avoid contact with others.

* Do not travel while sick. * Cover mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not hands) when coughing or sneezing. * Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.
