Year 2 Prizegiving 2024

“Whilst we need food to feed our bodies, it is kindness that feeds the soul.”

Mike Marie

Pre-Prep Prizegiving provided an opportunity for both a review of the action-packed year that the children of Pre-Prep have enjoyed and a reflection on our Year 2 leavers’ journey, as well as the kindness that they have demonstrated as a collective.

Mr Marie reflected on the many Bromsgrove Qualities awards that are given out throughout the year and the continual embedding of our School values that the children embrace and demonstrate with regularity. The Head Pupils of the Prep School, Isabelle Ballard and Fraser McDougall, both addressed the audience, reminiscing on their own experiences of life in the Prep School that Year 2 could look forward to, and, in Isabelle’s case, recalling some fond PrePrep memories of her own.

Year 8 Prizegiving 2024

“Here’s what I think integrity is: it’s choosing courage over comfort. Choosing what’s right over what’s fun, fast or easy. And practicing your values.”

Brené Brown

During Mr Marie’s Prep School Prizegiving speech, he focussed on the importance of the pupil’s education being value driven; whilst the accumulation of knowledge and understanding about academic subjects is ultimately examined towards the end of formal schooling, lessons for life are learned continuously and values are scrutinised daily, and long beyond School life. Gabriel Brown, Upper Sixth and Pre-Prep and Prep Survivor, was welcomed as the guest speaker, giving an honest and reflective account of his own experiences and development throughout his time in the Prep School and beyond. Gabriel shared with the School the need to embrace disappointment, setbacks, and making mistakes – the key to success being the perseverance in the face of failure.

With many highlights shared, such as the first place finish for the Goblin Car, the Years 7 and 8 production of James and the Giant Peach, the Year 6 choir performing at the Royal Albert Hall, outstanding Eisteddfod performances, the success of the gardening club at the Malvern Show, continued sporting excellence with national representation and titles being earned, superb internal and external art exhibitions showcasing pupils’ work across all year groups, and much more, the underlining message from Mr Marie was that success stems from an adherence to our values, not least ambition, respect and humility, and the importance of the recognition of an entire community contributing to the success of individuals and groups. In an Olympic year, the significance of the slightly adapted Olympic motto and the role that community plays were summarised: Citius, Altius, Fortius – Communiter (Faster, Higher, Stronger – Together) – together, the community achieves more.

In Year 8, we went to Stratford Upon Avon on a Geography trip and it was really fun to walk around interviewing people and learning about the town. Then at Christmas we took part in form dodgeball and it was so much fun working together to beat everyone. I have had a wonderful time in Prep School, and I will miss this time in my life. I have enjoyed living in the boarding house, Page. It has been acting as my home and offered me lots of qualities, such as enabling me to become more independent and being able to solve my own problems. But not only has it done that, most of my friends are also in Page House, and they have always been there. Before I came to this School, I had never really enjoyed English sports like rugby, but after I arrived here, I must admit, I fell in love with the sport - rugby, hockey and cricket are all some of my favourite sports of all. I have also participated in table tennis, and have tasted little flavours of success, I am not the best player on the team, but I’d say I have helped our team. Last year in rugby, I was D team, but this year I decided to try my best, and this led to me being moved up to the B team, it was a memorable in experience, because it tells me that if you give all you have, you might just reach that point where you get successful. In academics, I worked hard and got consistent grades, and then I got moved up two sets. That remains to be one of the greatest accomplishments in my life. And similarly in science, I used to average 70 percent, but now I average above 90 which I am proud of. I have also attended choir, and when I first joined, I was so stoked, because some of my friends were there and it was just generally fun, I stayed there for a year and a half, and we’ve had some fun trips on the journey. However, out of everything, my friends are the ones who had made my whole journey in this School, the best experience I could have possibly had.

Page House

We have been lucky enough to be a part of another awe-inspiring year in Page. With Heads of House, Jyanas Gurung and Shristi Rai, the organisation and smooth running of the boarding community has been nothing short of brilliant. Isaac Chinnadurai and Sanskriti Rai have done an amazing job as Deputies, leading and acting as exceptional role models. Our Heads of House and House Prefects have been consistent in promoting and prioritising our Page Values, with kindness underpinning all other qualities.

Charity and community links within School have been high on our agenda this year. Building stronger links with our Senior Boarding Houses has been a success. This has not only given the older students opportunities to support us in Prep Boarding, but it has also made the younger boarders become familiar with Senior pupils who they will meet more regularly in the future.

In the Michaelmas Term, we welcomed Mrs Punt to Page as a guest speaker to talk about her charity work and running career. The children were inspired by her words of wisdom and encouragement, giving us all the motivation to host our own sporting events and raise money. This term saw the beginning of a new tradition, Page Santa Cycle. This happened by accident, or as some might say, a twist of fate, as inclement weather stood in the way of our planned Santa Run. The cycle event turned out to be a huge success and proved that when things don’t go as planned, we can turn unexpected events into something special. The children also enjoyed Hallowe’en parties, a fireworks display at Winterfold and a family Christmas meal organised by our Page Pupil Voice team. All these events were supported by the Senior helpers.

The Lent Term brought about another new tradition, our Page Easter Run, again supported by Mrs Punt. A large number of boarders donned their running gear and ran around the field to raise money. It was wonderful to see so many get involved, including our younger boarders too. The Page children showed their determination, resilience and camaraderie, thinking of others and creating lasting memories. Further highlights from this term included Mothering Sunday in Chapel, our annual Easter Egg Hunt and our all-time favourite, Domino’s Pizza Night.

The Summer Term is always a special time within our boarding community. With the lighter and warmer evenings, the children can make the most of the freedom of the School grounds. There is nothing more rewarding than hearing the laughter of many and seeing the children play together, enjoying each other’s company in the most beautiful of settings. We have witnessed endless hours of fun playing football, basketball, cricket and volleyball; with the younger children making dens amongst the trees and racing around on the go-karts.

Throughout the year, our boarders have again been given the opportunity to explore life away from campus, and every Sunday trips have taken place to our favourite venues and destinations including Aztec Adventure, Waterworld, No Limitz Trampoline Park, Planet Ice and shopping trips to Worcester, Cheltenham, Birmingham and Merry Hill. As requested by our Page Pupil Voice, we hosted a special visit to China Town for our guests from Bromsgrove Mission Hills. The trips have been a huge success and could not have happened without the time and support of our Prep School teachers and Housemothers.

Prizegiving was once again a special and most memorable day. Subject prizes were awarded to many of our Year 8 leavers. Sheldon Cheung received The Lynch Cup for Mathematics, Lucas Hong was awarded for English as an additional language, Shristi Rai was awarded the trophy for German, Tiffany Tuladhar-Cardosa was the recipient of Llanwrtyd Wells Cup for Art and Brisha Gurung took Warne Cup for textiles. In addition to this, Edith Stones received one of the Headmaster’s Prizes. Sangmu Lama, Miksha Thangden Limbu, Eden Hall, Sophia Birch, Jeremy Chan and Elly Hall all received prizes for the highest attainment in their respective year groups. Ashwin Rana, Lacey Sutton, Jyanas Gurung and Emily Shaw were awarded prizes for the highest engagement in their year.

We celebrated the end of the year in style with a House BBQ. It was lovely to see so many staff present, including the Senior Houseparents, and a healthy representation of Senior helpers. This was an opportunity to thank everyone who has made this year a happy and successful one. To the Houseparents and Assistants, Housemothers, Tutors, Housekeepers, Estates, Health Centre, School Shop and staff at the Prep School; a heartfelt thanks to you all for your love and commitment to our boarders.

We anticipate another great year in Page House and Conway Page, and we look forward to making many more happy memories together.

Commemoration Day

The Headmaster opened proceedings by reiterating the wishes of Sir Thomas Cookes when Bromsgrove School was refounded in 1693. Sir Thomas set out in his Foundation Deed of the same year what should happen on days such as this. The School was expected to appoynt a Learned Minister to read Prayers and preach a Sermon in the Church at Bromsgrove ….(as Revd. O’Hare did so well in St John’s during the Commemoration Service) for which Service the School shall give to the Minister soe appoynted Tenn Shillings (we have yet to thank Revd O’Hare for his excellent service with the princely sum of 50 pence) And that after the Sermon is preached, said Sir Thomas, the said Trustees, Minister and Schoolmaster shall in such manner as they shall think fit take their Refreshment (we hope it is in the spirit of the Foundation Deed that everyone enjoyed both refreshment and entertainment throughout the day).

So, as we adhere to the wishes of Sir Thomas Cookes from 331 years ago, we also celebrate the many successes of the past three terms on Commemoration Day. These included successes of individuals, teams and groups, some of which have been achieved to high acclaim, whilst other successes have occurred more quietly by pupils who have happily worked away out of the limelight. Indeed, it was once said that success is not the key to happiness, rather happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.

As well as saying goodbye to our Upper Sixth pupils, we also bade a fond farewell to colleagues Mr Alejandro Osorio Martinez, Ms Lydia Xu, Mrs Jacqui McCarthy, Mr David Atkinson, Mrs Annika Eaton, Mr Paul Prouse, Mr Gunny Patel, Mrs Ann Hibell, Mrs Sarah Cronin and Mr Paul Mullan. The Headmaster also thanked the Governors, the PA and, of course, the parents for their support of the School, all of whom make considerable sacrifices to enable our pupils to have a plethora of opportunities available at Bromsgrove.

The Headmaster saved the final words for the departing Upper Sixth leavers – they are poised to go off to a host of highly selective universities in the UK and abroad; some with offers of degree level apprenticeships and a small number taking a planned gap year. But, over the years leading to this point, these students have made an immensely positive impact on the School, both because of all that they have done and the tone they have set.

Whilst some members of the Upper Sixth have been with us for two years, others for almost their entire lives, during their time at Bromsgrove, they have created a host of memories, friendships, interests and talents. We hope that, for many years to come, they will be able to recall their achievements, in and out of the classroom of which they are particularly proud and any challenge they have been able to overcome.

The Headmaster finished by asking the Upper Sixth to face their new adventures with optimism. Be open to new experiences, ideas, and people. Develop interests and passions – just as they have done here. Learn from setbacks, adapt, and keep moving forward. We want our pupils to use their skills and talents to make the world better – remember the African proverb, If you want to go fast, go alone; but if you want to go far, go together.

Above all, whilst they may no longer be Bromsgrove pupils, they will always be a Bromsgrovian.

The Sir Thomas Cookes Sermon

The annual Sir Thomas Cookes Sermon on Commemoration Day was preached this year by The Reverend Phelim O’Hare, Archdeacon-designate for Aston, Birmingham. In recognising the end of the School year, the prospect of a long summer holiday and, for leavers, the sense of paths going separate ways, he referenced the popular Game of Thrones refrain ‘Winter is coming’, as well as the theme from CS Lewis that ‘Wrong will be right when Aslan comes in sight; at the sound of his roar, sorrows will be no more; when he bares his teeth, winter meets its death; and when he shakes his mane, we shall have spring again.’

Rev O’Hare suggested that summer is a season to remind us of who we are, to prepare our path and the purpose that will give meaning to our lives. It is easy to take for granted how one’s school experience can create memories and a sense of nostalgia, but the joy of learning and discovering new abilities, skills and capacities, particularly the gift of friendship, should continue beyond school days and should, he proposed, become the ambition for those about to leave the metaphorical familiar shore and fishing grounds mentioned in the reading (Luke 5: 1-11).

Jesus’ words to Simon in that same reading, telling him to ‘push out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch’ can be a metaphor for what a school like Bromsgrove does to encourage those who seek to learn and grow, preparing pupils to push out into the deeper water of the world, embracing the opportunities, choices and challenges it presents, including some of the risks and anxieties it may bring, trusting that God will support and help to create meaning, direction and a deeper satisfaction to the gift of life. Simon Peter’s immediate response in the reading was to recognise his own personal failings, yet his trust still led him to fulfil his own purposeful vocation.

Rev O’Hare encouraged all to be warmed in summer by God’s friendship that invites us to push out into deeper water and ‘catch people’ (whether friends or opponents) in our lives and personal journeys, who will help to form and develop our own purpose as faithful servants.

The Tony Limbert Trophy (Sport) 2024

Emelia Moberley

Tony Limbert was a pupil who fully embraced the sporting opportunities here at Bromsgrove. This trophy, dedicated to his memory, is awarded to someone who has strived to do the same during their time here.

Throughout her time in the Senior School, Emelia has embraced every aspect of sporting life. Committed to training and competition, her hard work and natural talent has meant that she has represented the School in 173 fixtures over the past five years across many sports. Emelia is very unassuming and her commitment and attitude to School sport has been second to none. She always gives 100% regardless of the task ahead and has demonstrated excellent sportsmanship on and off the field. Emelia always turns up to every training session and match with a smile on her face.

Whether on the astro, the netball court, or the tennis court, Emelia has demonstrated physical prowess, determination, and endeavour to help lead teams to County, Regional, and National success. Personally, she has been awarded the triple cap shield. Along with her tremendous teamwork, she has exhibited great leadership skills, exemplified by her outstanding achievements as the hockey captain and netball vice-captain. This year’s winner of the Tony Limbert award is Emelia Moberley.

The Paul Sawtell Trophy 2024

Finbar Dinnen

The Paul Sawtell Trophy winner this year is the example of what every student in Bromsgrove School should aspire to be. The contributions made by this student have been immense academically, as an ambassador, and in terms of participation.

Finbar has represented the 1st XV rugby team, the 1st XI hockey team and the 7s rugby teams. He has participated in athletics fixtures and taken part in every House event possible.

Despite his number of commitments, Finbar remains true to himself; he is a community-minded soul, and a great people-person, willing to give up his time for a cause he believes in. Finbar is equally comfortable greeting VIPs or sharing a joke with the Lower Fourth pupils.

Teachers value his positive attitude, outstanding academic progress, and his contribution in the classroom, whilst peers respect his knowledge on a plethora of topics. As a slick debater, Finbar displays a natural knack for leadership. His forthcoming studies in History and Economics at Oxford University are fitting for a young man who will undoubtedly make significant contributions to the world. He is a trustworthy and popular friend to many and as Head of School his contributions have been countless. Congratulations, for embodying the very best of what Bromsgrove School strives to achieve and earning this well-deserved award. The Paul Sawtell Trophy is awarded to Finbar Dinnen.

The Ben Showell Memorial Prize (Performing Arts) 2024

Olivia Garrett

The Ben Showell Award goes to someone who has shown excellent commitment to both Music and Drama throughout their time at Bromsgrove School.

A scholar of Drama, Olivia has also been seen many times on the concert platform singing solo, appearing with the Jazz band, or conducting their House choir. She has been a mentor to others and it is also clear that she has been on a significant journey herself since joining the School five years ago.

Passionate about performing in general and about Musical Theatre in particular, Olivia has struggled at times with a lack of confidence, so it has been a pleasure watching her truly blossom in the last eighteen months. As an actor, Olivia has tackled a number of very varied roles from the Cockney bag lady in Pinter’s absurdist comedy, The Last To Go, through the equally hilarious star-struck young housemaid in The Hampstead Murder Mystery, to her desperately moving performance as the bereaved mother of Hamnet at the last Drama scholars’ evening.

Eclipsing all of these appearances, however, was her Anita in West Side Story last December. From Olivia’s impressive range and glorious dark singing tones to the utter conviction of her acting, particularly in her final horrifying scene, both racially and physically assaulted by members of the Jet gang, she gave a consistently remarkable performance that would not have been out of place on the West End stage; those who witnessed it were very lucky indeed.

A very popular winner of the Senior House Drama Performing Arts Award last March, this year’s Ben Showell Performing Arts trophy goes to the unforgettable Olivia Garrett.

Special Prizes

The Kelly Bicknell Award (Service) 2024 Serisha Sunner

The Kelly Bicknell award goes to a student who has genuinely been outstanding in terms of their contribution to the life of the Bromsgrove School community.

Throughout her career at Bromsgrove, Serisha has shown a commitment to community that has gone above and beyond what is expected. She is humble, well-rounded, enthusiastic and, above all, dedicated to several areas of Bromsgrove School life. In each of those aspects, she has looked to engage and develop her own interests and talents but has, in the process, ended up encouraging others to enjoy their own participation in such activities.

Serisha is a strong academic in her own right, with a sharp mind and a sharper wit; she thrives on testing her mettle against similarly focused individuals in class, but relishes expanding her own understanding through such discourse. Such determination has seen Serisha achieve one of the highest UCAT results in the country while, in extension activities, the only way to react to her commendable Lower Sixth Form Silver award (top 20%) achieved in the National Chemistry Olympiad was to gain the Gold award (top 8%) this year – the only Bromsgrove pupil to do so. As Vice-President of the School’s MedVetDent Society, Serisha used her own enthusiasm for pursuing a career in this field to encourage and support like-minded peers through the application process, as well as sharing advice to younger pupils exploring such options.

In Performing Arts, Serisha has been a regular contributor to Music and Drama, at both House and School level, particularly enjoying musical ensemble work, even to the extent of taking on the responsibility for rehearsing and conducting her House Song competition entry – always an exercise in patience, consideration and perseverance when encouraging and balancing the musical strengths and weaknesses (and excitement) of a large chorus. Likewise, she has relished many opportunities to take to the stage in School productions, but also in the House Drama competitions, with awards in Fifth Form and Lower Sixth, and as House Drama rep in Upper Sixth, always leading by example.

That sense of service has also transferred into a prominent role in the School’s Combined Cadet Force as one of the pupil NCOs in the RAF Section, developing her own leadership and inter-personal skills while encouraging teamwork and participation in younger pupils who have reacted well to her enthusiasm and interest in their progress. And not surprisingly, such a character appeals to both young and old, proven by her volunteering at a local residential home with a winning mix of helpful commitment, genuine care and human compassion within the local community.

Serisha can reflect on an outstanding School career in which she has stretched herself by making the most of many opportunities. She has much to offer individually but, along the way, has enriched the experience of many others within the community to which she has contributed so much, in so many areas. This year’s Kelly Bicknell award goes to Serisha Sunner.

Predicted to achieve 7s in all six of her IB subjects, the winner of the elite Academic Award is an outstandingly talented social scientist.

Seeing how a society’s learned helplessness can allow a democracy to drift to dictatorship, Arina has read and thought deeply. She has immersed herself in the works of Isiaih Berlin through to Zubarevich, from Plato to Popper.

Qualifying for the All-Russian Economics Olympiad finals and the Moscow Economics Team, her interests have consistently returned to where the separate worlds of economic and political theory and philosophy intersect. For example, her entry into the R. A. Butler Essay Prize suggested that deglobalisation is the consequence of the inequality seen in democratic capitalism. Isolationism and national populism reflect the socioeconomic weakness in liberal democracy.

Arina is outstanding in class and, like all of the very best students, she combines this with a humility and eagerness to improve that has enabled her to scale the academic heights. Having been introduced to a new topic, the next day she will return armed with an in-depth knowledge and follow-up questions. Her willingness to reflect on and play off the ideas of others pushes forward understanding and works for the benefit of all. She learns for the enjoyment of learning and finds all topics worthy of interest.

Arina is looking forward to continuing her exploration of the world of Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Balliol College Oxford. The winner of the Housman Trophy is Arina Makarina.

The Cookes Prize 2024

The Cookes Prize is awarded each year to a student who has had an outstanding School career, making significant contributions across various areas while maintaining an exemplary academic profile. This year’s recipient epitomises these qualities and more.

From the moment George joined the Senior School, he has distinguished himself as a remarkable individual whose talents span a wide range of disciplines. Academically, his performance has been nothing short of stellar. Dedication to studies is evident from consistently high grades, particularly in subjects such as Computer Science, Further Maths, and Physics.

George’s intellectual curiosity and determination has earned top results in various competitions, including the UKMT Senior Maths Challenge, where a silver medal was achieved. He also recently excelled in the Bebras Challenge, a national computational thinking competition, where his score placed him in the top 10% of entries in his age category.

His prowess is not confined to the academic arena. Georgie is a multitalented individual whose contributions to the School community are extensive. In sport, he has excelled as a key player in the 1st XV and 1st VII Rugby teams, where the team made it through to the National semi-finals at Rosslyn Park, demonstrating versatility and leadership. His commitment to physical excellence is further evidenced by achievements in swimming and athletics, consistently setting high standards and inspiring his peers.

In addition to sporting achievements, George is a talented musician and actor. As an integral member of the School choir, solo performances have been noteworthy. Musical talents extend to the saxophone and piano, instruments played with great skill and passion. He has not only performed in solo and ensemble settings but also encouraged younger students to develop their musical talents, fostering a love for the arts within our School. George’s fond renditions of Billy Joel classics such as Piano Man have left lasting impressions during House and School events. Theatrical contributions are equally impressive, with a standout performance in the School production of Guys and Dolls bringing the character of Arvide Abernathy to life with flair and dedication.

What truly sets George apart is character. Despite numerous achievements, humility, approachability, and a willingness to support others remain consistent. Teachers and peers alike praise maturity, integrity, and infectious enthusiasm. The ability to balance numerous commitments while maintaining high standards in all areas is a testament to an extraordinary work ethic and resilience.

Reflecting on his journey from the Prep School through to the Upper Sixth, George has not only excelled academically but has also left an indelible mark on our community. Participation in events including poetry recitals and the Staff Reading Prize finals, where he captivated audiences with his powerful recitation of Frost’s Mending Wall further exemplifies his versatility and passion for learning. Service and leadership commitments have been exemplary. Involvement in the CCF and achieving the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award highlight dedication to personal growth and community service. Additionally, his tenure as Head Boy of the Prep School set the foundation for his outstanding leadership skills, which he continued to develop and showcase throughout his School career.

As Deputy Head of School, George been a source of wisdom and support, providing insightful contributions during weekly meetings and setting a positive example for peers. It is with immense pride and admiration that we award this year’s Cookes Prize to George Hastings. Congratulations, George, on an outstanding School career. We look forward to seeing the incredible impact you will undoubtedly make in the years to come.

Elmshurst

Just as a tapestry is woven with diverse threads to create a vibrant and cohesive picture, so has the 2023-2024 academic year at Elmshurst House been a testament to the diverse talents, resilience, and unity of our students. Each member has added his unique colour and pattern, contributing to the rich and intricate design that makes Elmshurst a truly special place.

This year has been packed with too many events and activities to mention all. We kicked off with a dynamic evening, supporting Bromsgrove Sporting FC to an exciting victory. Another successful House Song with our rendition of Seven Nation Army, winning Best Conductor. Victorious teams in many of the Inter-House events kept the trophy cabinet well-stocked. Dining out with each year group and their tutors made for some memorable evenings. Winning the Senior House Drama competition and the inaugural Elmshurst Christmas Concert showcased how much talent we have, highlighting why Elmshurst has been so prominent in the myriads of music and drama performances this year. The Hallowe’en party, the Christmas Dinner and Disco, Chinese New Year Casino Night, the House Charity Football Match, and the Hog Roast and Tug o’ War are just a selection of the events enjoyed this year.

Our departing Upper Sixth have been a tremendous group, setting fine examples and leading Elmshurst with commitment and pride. Each of the eleven boys has found success on their unique journey through Bromsgrove School.

Jack Friend, our Head of House, has been a steadfast presence at Bromsgrove School since Pre-Prep. Involved in many areas of the School, particularly the CCF, his military leadership skills have guided Elmshurst with wisdom and clarity, always giving his time and effort for others. His dedication and involvement, coupled with his impressive achievements in the Sixth Form, have earned him much respect, culminating in a well-deserved university place to study Medicine. We are all deeply grateful for his contributions.

Mark Florov, our Deputy Head of House, has been an exemplary figure, known for his impressive athleticism as a key player in 1st team football and rugby, as well as his strong academic performance. His calm and reasoned demeanour, coupled with excellent communication skills, has made him a respected and reliable leader within Elmshurst.

The House Monitor Team, consisting of Radu Bogdan, Aaron Chan, Damon Cheng, Alvin Chui, Mark Florov, Jack Friend, Naim Hassoun, Bright Jindachotsiri, Amir Tukur, Hanli Yang and Ben Yeo have been pivotal in steering Elmshurst. Their unique characteristics, teamwork, and empathy have built respect and fostered a supportive environment. Their efforts have earned Elmshurst’s gratitude and admiration.

Being awarded School Caps this year are the following:

Bright Jindachotsiri for Badminton

Aaron Chan for Drama

Mark Florov for Football

Ben Yeo for Rugby (also Player of the Season)

Our Honours Boards not only record the Head of House but also the winners of the four House awards. This year’s winners leave their legacy recorded on the walls of Elmshurst as follows:

Best Newcomer: Yurii Fedorovych Endeavour Award: Bright Jindachotsiri House Spirit Award: Mark Florov

House Contribution Award: Jack Friend

Elmshurst House continues to be a vibrant tapestry of diverse talents, underpinned by a strong ethos of community and a family feel. This year has been a fantastic one, filled with achievements, camaraderie and growth. The sense of belonging and mutual support among the boys has created an environment where everyone thrives. We look forward to the future with optimism, knowing that the threads woven this year will continue to strengthen and enrich our House for years to come.

Hazeldene

At the end of another busy year, I have reflected on all that the Hazeldene girls have achieved this year, and I am in awe of them. Hard working, kind, funny and incredibly supportive, our girls have had many highs this year, and they have done it all with a smile on their face, and a kindness shown to others that knows no bounds.

House competitions have been in abundance and the girls have thrown themselves into the array of sports, music and drama performances. House Song earlier in the year saw the girls sing Seasons of Love, finishing as runners up in a tough competition. House Drama performances showed incredible talent from our young actresses, and Hannah Sutherland deserves a special mention for her role in Me! I’m Afraid of Virginia Woolf The camaraderie and House spirit that has been in abundance at all these events, and seeing the girls joining in across the studies, has been a delight. Academically, we have had many students achieve countless commendations for their efforts and AE grades throughout the year. Our Hazeldene PA continues to grow, with the now annual events firmly in the calendar for all to enjoy. The Hallowe’en Party moved location to Hazeldene House this year and girls across the ages thoroughly enjoyed the array of games on offer. I must give credit to all our girls who selflessly agreed that their Easter Egg treat from the PA should be gifted to our House charity this year, Women’s Aid. The PA have continued to work hard to encourage the girls and their parents to be involved in Hazeldene life and I am grateful for all their support throughout this year.

This year’s Monitor team have gone above and beyond to support the girls, the staff and myself. They are fully committed to making the House a safe, welcoming place where students can feel comfortable being themselves. I would particularly like to thank this year’s Head of House, Oliva Garrett, Deputy Izzy Keavney and House Captain Charlie Atkinson for their leadership and support. I am looking forward to the new Monitor team stepping up to the mantel and seeing their new ideas to keep improving House life. The team who will be integral to this are: Jessica Fleming, Lily Milojevic, Elizabeth Philpott, Isla Sutherland as House Monitors, with Head of House Teah Petrova and Deputy Head of House Emily James at the helm.

I would like to thank our Housekeeper, Zoë Paling, for all her support and for the work she does in looking after the girls daily, and to the tutor team who have been brilliant again at encouraging, cajoling, and supporting their tutees through another incredibly busy year.

Hazeldeneans, you all make me very proud to be your Houseparent. Have a brilliant summer, for those staying, rest and recuperate ready for another busy year next year, and for those leavingspread your wings, go and show the world your brilliance and good luck.

Housman Hall

Reflecting on the year, I am struck with the level of cohesion that has characterised Housman Hall during this academic year. The new Lower Sixth students settled quickly and had the confidence to integrate themselves into friendship groups that spanned the year groups. The Upper Sixth willingly played the role of caring older sibling, helping to nurture a familial atmosphere.

Both year groups bought into the opportunities available, signing up to Chapel Choir, Flourishing Fiver, the School Production, Orchestra, CCF, Duke of Edinburgh, as well as a range of sporting activities. If ever there was a year for Housman to dominate in House rugby, this was it, with a large number in the 2nd team, but, alas, the competition did not run. The image of the fearless warriors, Adam Scholar and Rohan Adams, charging into contact makes me shudder. The contribution that Housman has made to the development of volleyball at Bromsgrove cannot be understated. What started life as a group of students playing socially during the evenings has now become a recognised Bromsgrove School sport, complete with fixtures and the awarding of colours and caps. The departure of Oscar Chow, Laziza Djumabaeva, Casey Wong, Benedikt Rast and Irfan Bin Kamaludin is a loss to the volleyball teams, but they leave behind a flourishing sport that will continue to grow on the foundations they helped to build.

House competitions always bring out the best in Housman students; their can-do attitude, support for one another and commitment to representing the House. Our Lower Sixth took the lead in the House Drama competition, and, with the support of the experienced Wayne Leung, produced an ambitious ensemble performance. Our performance of Counting Stars by One Republic was impressive and drew the following praise from the Music dept; ‘It is always the case that a House with great heart shines on an event like this. It’s clear you all were enjoying the moment together, and that can’t be faked for the competition.’

The Housman teams across both the girls’ and boys’ House football competitions showed great spirit, and we easily fielded large squads. The class of our boys’ A team allowed them to progress to the final against Wendron-Gordon. A nail-biting encounter that went to penalties saw the cup come home to Housman. The cool, clinical, finishing of Philipp Steck and Matteo Hammel as well as the heroics of Stanley Firouzian-Chun in goal stick in the memory.

Irfan Bin Kamaludin and Fiona Zhang were excellent Heads of House, willing to be supportive and muck in at all times. Adam Scholar was awarded the Stubbings Cup for embodying what it means to be a Housman Hallian, and Casey Wong won the Kulebyakin award for kindness. Individual awards are incredibly hard to award when you have so many high quality, caring, sociable and fun students in the same House. A problem that I hope continues to afflict Housman Hall.

Lupton

As another year ends, nineteen new Luptonians are now well established in House, and we have said our fond farewells to fourteen long serving Upper Sixth formers.

On the academic front, Benjamin Hornigold received awards for the best performance at GCSE for Physics and for his all-round performance in all subjects. Alexander Bennett was awarded the Lower Fourth subject prizes for Latin and French. Ethan James received the Music prize and Adam McClure won the Endeavour and Progress prize. Henry Foster was awarded the Upper Fourth academic prize for Physical Education and Seth Benjamin received the subject prize for French. Henry Hoare won the academic award for the Extended Project Qualification and Isaac Bridge won the Sportsman of the Year trophy. On Commemoration Day, Thomas Astle was awarded the Wattell Prize for History, Gabriel Brown received the Turner Memorial Prize for Music and Finbar Dinnen was awarded the Head Boy Special Prize and the Paul Sawtell Trophy. Highlights from the Michaelmas Term included our very own Gabriel Brown, who played the lead role in the West Side Story production in December. The Fourth Form boys won the Junior House swimming, and we delivered a superb performance in the House Song competition. Lupton won the inaugural Eco fun sports competition and the House pumpkin competition.

At the beginning of the Lent Term, Lupton were able to call on a plethora of Fourth Form boys to take up the challenge in the Junior House drama competition. The eight boys had no drama experience to boast but were fantastic on the night. Unfortunately, they didn’t win, however, Benjamin Hilton was awarded the runners up prize in the best actor category. In the Junior House hockey competition, the Fourth Form boys reached the final where they won on penalty flicks. In the House Music competition, Benjamin Hornigold co-ordinated a nine-piece ensemble rendition of Superstitious by Stevie Wonder, finishing as runners up.

In the Summer Term, a busy exam season meant that House competitions were limited. Lupton did, however, have time to take part in the Junior and Senior tennis competitions and the House Bake-Off. We also witnessed the return of the Senior School Sports Day.

Caps were awarded this year to Isaac Bridge, Oscar Bridgewater, Gabriel Brown, Brendan Colley, Finbar Dinnen, Henry Hoare and Markuss TownsendFord. Isaac Bridge was also awarded The John Downey Cup for his contribution to hockey. Major School Colours have been awarded to Gabriel Brown, Finbar Dinnen, Maximilian Jehan and Markuss TownsendFord. Finley Bamford, Joshua Bevins, Oliver Dieppe Josh Glaze, Oliver James, Harry Jones, and Noah Healey received their Minor School Colours. Henry Hoare received his Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award.

I want to publicly thank the Lupton PA for all their efforts this year, and particularly Denise Mickle, who, after eight amazing years, is stepping down from her role as head of the Lupton PA. She has given so much of her time over the years organising events that have helped to raise money for various charities (this year our main charity being the Medical Detection Dogs) and ensuring that the House has everything it needs from new benches to reclothing the pool table.

The Lupton Tutor team have provided outstanding pastoral support and Angela Cotterill has continued to maintain the House, ensuring that all the boys in Lupton are given the care and attention that they require.

Lyttelton

The Lyttelton boys continue to impress with the myriad of abilities, interests, challenges and more throughout the community. They continue to challenge themselves to improve in areas of own individual focus, team environments and outside comfort zones to explore new pursuits; they remain an incredible community of different aptitudes and skill that work together with, and for, each other.

Highlights for Lyttelton this year included winning both Junior rugby competitions in October. The Senior House Drama performance, an extract from Of Mice and Me, was performed by Ewan Head, Bobby Riley, Tom Hunt and Harvey Phillips and directed by Ewan Head; Tom Hunt was awarded the Adjudicator’s Special Prize for his excellent character acting. The House Ensemble Music competition saw Darcy Dines (bass guitar), Leo Boonnak (electric guitar), George Ascough (voice), Euan Choi (drums) and Dayven Wong (keys) perform an infectious rendition of You Can Call Me Al by Paul Simon. There is special credit to the dozen Lower Fourth boys who banded together, putting themselves outside their comfort zones, to perform Under Milk Wood by Dylan Thomas, with commitment. Struan Brockie, Sam Brown, Freddy Giles, Sam Harries, Eddie Head, Ewan Head, William Russell, Joseph Simon, William Siviter, Jan Van Schalkwyk and Archie Wilson all performed with eloquent narration of the extract and held the audience spellbound as everyone hung onto each word.

The traditional Mark Reading at the conclusion of each term showed the breadth of talent across the House. Mattia Magni was awarded the IB CAS award for his commitment to service activities, personal growth and global citizenship. Bobby Riley was given the Bromsgrove Service award for his outstanding contributions and interactions with the residential homes group and Chadsgrove Outreach group; he participates with enthusiasm and has a great rapport with everyone.

On the sports field, Caps were awarded to Robbie Bayliss (hockey) Alastair Ritchie and Seth Rogerson (cricket), Toby Lewis and Ollie Holden (rugby) and Tom Griffiths (golf). Toby Lewis was also awarded the Perrey Thompson trophy for his longterm service to School rugby. Major Colours were awarded to George Eccles (cross-country), Seth Rogerson (football), Toby Lewis and Ollie Holden (cricket). Minor Colours were awarded to George Ascough (fencing and music), Jasper Page (fencing), Ewan Head (drama), Henry Grey and Will Holroyd (athletics), Tom Tansley (rugby and athletics) and Euan Choi (golf). George Eccles was given the CCF award for Best Army Cadet. Alastair Ritchie and Seth Rogerson were awarded trophies for bowling and fielding, respectively. Finally, having completed 120 fixtures in his time at School, contributing most to rugby and cricket, and making incredibly positive contributions, Toby Lewis was awarded The Ben Dudley Award for outstanding contribution to boys’ games.

Thank you to the PA for their ongoing efforts in organising events throughout the year and for supporting the boys with their time and resources. We are also grateful to everyone who supports Lyttelton and its endeavours, including all families, and most importantly, the boys themselves. Finally, we continue to appreciate the contributions from our experienced tutors and support staff. Without each of you, Lyttelton would not be the community it is. Best wishes to all for the year ahead.

Mary Windsor

It has been a fabulous experience throughout my first year as Houseparent of Mary Windsor. I have been so proud of how the girls have looked after and supported each other through all the ups and downs they have encountered this year.

We have had some memorable House events in Mary Windsor including the welcome party in September, followed by the infamous Hallowe’en Party. A Christmas Party at Grafton Manor was a lovely way to end the Michaelmas Term. We finished the year with a Soirée in the House garden.

Mary Windsor pupils have participated in many House events, the highlight being the House Song competition conducted by Lily Wigglesworth, accompanied by Hailey Li with their rendition of FourFiveSeconds by Rhianna, Kanye West and Paul McCartney. The House Drama competitions for both Seniors and Juniors showcased some exceptional talent. The Senior girls performed a scene from The Accrington Pals by Peter Whelan, directed by Abi Palmer. The Junior cast performed a scene from Sparkleshark by Philip Ridley, directed by Iruoma OnwukaIwuchukwu.

The girls have shown tremendous House spirit by participating in many House Sports competitions such as swimming, hockey, tennis and rounders to name a few, finishing with a very hot Sports Day at the end of term. Some of our pupils have achieved School colours; Minor Colours were awarded to Angel Balogun, Iruoma Onwuka-Iwuchukwu and Elina Quito for Drama, and Irina Popovici for Tennis. Many congratulations also go to Audrey Wu and Jenny Tang who have been awarded full Arkwright Engineering Scholarships.

Academically, we have had some wonderful successes including Lower Fourth and Upper Fourth Subject prizes awarded at Mark Reading Assembly: Charlotte Birch (Design and Technology), Rowan Reijmer (Art and Textiles), Alisa Chen (Biology) Kate Ignatiuk (Art, Craft and Design and Design and Technology), and Sophia Tong (Endeavour and Progress).

In our end of year House assembly, we reviewed events and achievements of the Mary Windsor girls. We were delighted to award the following prizes: Kamilla Jumatova (Sports Award), Letitia Ho (Drama), Sophia Tong (Music). The Senior cup went to Iruoma Onwuka-Iwuchukwu, the Langdale Cup to Jenny Tang, the Wallis Bowl to Lily Wigglesworth, and the Fazell Cup to Arianna Okemuo. Sharon Mang and Charlotte Birch gained the best engagement grades and Hangma Limbu collected the most academic commendations this year.

We also said goodbye to our Upper Sixth Leavers. They have contributed much to the House, and we wish them every success as they continue their academic journey. We say farewell to Maisie Lyons, Arianna Okemuo, Daria Pyzhova, Tona Sanchez I Bosser, Moyo Sheidu, Hilary Siu, Abigail Tang and Lily Wigglesworth. Thank you to Lily who has led the Mary Windsor as Head of House and School Monitor and Moyo as Deputy Head of House. Farewell to Arianna who has carried out her role of Head Girl at Bromsgrove School so ably, and we are all very proud of her.

Leaving us this year are tutors Miss Baker, Miss Bradford, Mrs Eaton, Miss Hankinson and Mr Prouse, who, between them, have contributed to Mary Windsor for many years. I would like to thank them for all they have given and appreciate their hard work and dedication all this time. As they move on to their new roles at Bromsgrove or beyond, we wish them well.

Thank you also to the tutor team, Assistant Houseparent, Miss Limbrick, and of course, our wonderful Housemother, Mrs Watson for everything this year. We look forward to the next academic year with our new Head of House Rukhsang Tamang, Deputy Head of House Norah Gurung and assisted by a fantastic team of Monitors. We are so very proud that three members of Mary Windsor, Victoria Kwok, Kamilla Jumatova and Iruoma Onwuka-Iwuchukwu have also been selected as School Monitors, and Iruoma as Senior Boarder. Best wishes to everyone for the year ahead.

Oakley

They say it is the taking part that counts and although this is a sentiment I usually agree with, this year it was the winning that I will remember for many years to come. House Song 2023 was our year and it was a priceless moment when the judge announced that Oakley’s Super Trouper was the winning performance.

The girls’ elation after four weeks of intense rehearsals echoed through the arena. Led by Upper Sixth Phoebe Qu, accompanied by Fifth former Trissie Wong on the piano and encouraged by our strong Monitor team, the song was praised for its ambition and skill. As if that wasn’t enough, winning House Music later in the Lent Term, after being runners up last year, saw further accolades for Trissie Wong, Karis Cheng, Clara Lau, Alvina Chui, Bernice Tse, Alicia Wong and Yana Chan with their polished rendition of Rewrite The Stars

House Drama saw Esinam Adom receive the Best Actor prize and the two-handed piece she performed with Petya Lazarova was spellbinding, ably directed by Ibukun. Esinam and Petya continued to pound the boards, impressing in the Lower Fourth play at the end of the Summer Term.

Not to be outdone by our musicians and actors, we were also proud winners of Junior House badminton and Senior House hockey. I have been really impressed with the way our new students have been willing to throw themselves into every event and represent the House.

We are sad to say goodbye to Mr Terry from our boarding team after five years of his support in the House. And although Ms Xu and Ms Bradbury have only been with us a short while, they too will be much missed by me and the girls.

My thanks as ever goes to the rest of the Oakley family, tutors Mr Vice, Mr Snelling, Mrs Linfield, Ms Perez, Ms Hopkins, Assistant Houseparent Miss Farrell and our beloved Housemother, Mrs Pugh. The time and dedication they give to the roles in helping support, cheerlead, cajole and encourage the Oakley girls is truly inspirational.

Our outgoing Upper Sixth have been outstanding. I could not have wished for a more dynamic and diverse group of confident and talented young women. As role models, I have relied on them to lead by example. They have led the House to raise over £1000 this year for our House charity Help For Heroes. My sincere thanks go to the whole year group for their contributions to House life and to the Monitor Team, Katie Chan, Alicia Wong, Prin Taksaporn Waeruwanatorn, Lidia Belcuore, Sasha Kichaikina, Sofia Mikhonicheva, Sophia Mills, Varvara Maslennikova, and Deputy Heads of House Selai Boginisoko and Nina Renouvel. They have been expertly led by Hatty Owen as Head of House who has been a model of high standards, hard work, kindness and humility and I thank her for her loyalty and dedication to Oakley House.

As I reflect on the past year of wins and losses, I still feel the privilege of living and working alongside our Oakley girls who come from all corners of the world, near and far, calling this their home and each on their own trajectory. This is what makes me feel like I have won the lottery.

Ottilie Hild

What a pleasure it is to be writing this as the curtains close on my first year as Houseparent of Ottilie Hild. I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the seventy-seven hardworking, funny, ambitious and kind young women in my care. There is so much talent amongst our Ottilie Hildeans. Whether it is on the athletics track, the netball court and the hockey pitch, or on the Cobham and Routh stages - where there is a competition or a performance, there will be at least one of our OH girls.

I have been blown away on so many occasions witnessing the sheer hard work and determination that supplements the talent. A huge thank you goes to my tutor team, the Parents’ Association and to the outgoing Monitor team, led by Flos Stewart and Freya Lawton, for their hard work in making this year such a success.

The first event of the year to bring the House together was, of course, the Unison House Song competition: led by first conductor Phoebe Hodgkisson, the girls did themselves proud with their rendition of the Jackson Five’s I Want You Back, which became an earworm for many weeks afterwards. Music and drama are real strengths of Ottilie Hild: in the Michaelmas Term, the Scholars’ Concert provided the opportunity for our girls to showcase their talent, and the Senior play, West Side Story, with Olivia McKelvey in the lead role of Maria, and Ottilie Hildeans in strong supporting roles, was a high point of the year. Junior and Senior House Drama took place in the Lent Term and we enjoyed performances of excerpts from The Death of Jude Hill and The House of Bernarda Alba. I particularly loved seeing some of our younger students push themselves out of their comfort zones and get involved – that is, after all, what being in Ottilie Hild is all about. The musicians had their chance to shine in the House Music Ensemble and Solo competitions where girls from across the House performed their spine-tingling version of Adele’s Set Fire to the Rain, and Iseoluwa Odugbesan rocked it on the drums to Van Halen’s Jump

In House sporting competitions, what we may lack in trophy haul this year was certainly made up by enthusiasm across the range of sports, and everyone who took part in the inaugural girls’ House football competition was incredibly proud of their involvement in a Bromsgrove ‘first’. Our 1.2 relay team gave that time-honoured tradition everything they had and came second by a matter by the smallest of margins: could next year finally be ours? We have many individuals who shine on the County, National and, indeed, International stage: seeing some of them in action and hearing about their exploits have definitely been highlights of this year.

Ottilie Hild girls have involved themselves in too many academic challenges and competitions to count – Maths Challenges, National Scientific Thinking, Science Olympiads, and, of course, being crowned winners of both the Junior and Senior Staff Reading Prize. They have also organised and run incredibly successful Hallowe’en and Valentine’s bake sales, both of which are now firm fixtures in the calendar. There have been so many personal challenges, achievements and successes this year: every single girl leaving this House at the end of term should be as proud of herself as I am of her. With Liz Smith and Emily Bower as incoming Head and Deputy Heads of House, and an impressive monitor team in support, we now look ahead with relish to September and a brand-new set of challenges.

School House

The School year began and ended with a heatwave, symbolising the energetic pace of the year. September saw a flurry of activity as the boys settled back into Bromsgrove School life, culminating in a whirlwind of exams. We also welcomed twenty new Lower Fourth pupils, all of whom have made significant contributions to School House and the Senior School.

Taking over from Mr Clinton as Houseparent, I have been immensely supported by the Monitor team. Charlie Wasley as Head of House provided calm and charismatic leadership, with Deputy Head Owais Iqbal and Monitors Seb Hall, Ben Collett, George Hastings, Rufus Parker and Joseph Boardman playing crucial roles. I eagerly anticipate the new Monitor team led by Hugo Blackwell, including Henning Wu, Seb Bullock, James Hobbs, Joe Kippax, Kaashif Ali Baig, Ethan Spurgeon and Alex Lobban continuing their excellent work.

The Tutee of the Half Term award was presented to Charlie Wasley, Beau Vaughan-Hawkins, Leo Chan, Jonnie Parker and Shayan Jilka for their consistent high standards and embodiment of School values.

Our year in sport was marked by a delayed but rewarding arrival of silverware. After numerous close calls, we triumphed in the Senior Hockey tournament and the 1.2 relay, with Will Pridden nearly setting a new School record for the fastest lap.

Academically, the Fourth Form students, particularly Ed Coote, Shayan Jilka, James Barnett, Leo Chan and Marcus Ho excelled in their end of year exams. In Lower Sixth, Neel Agrawal achieved the maximum average Engagement grade of 5.0 for his Lent AE Grades and impressive summer exam results, with Alex Lobban and Henning Wu also performing outstandingly. We await the GCSE and A Level results of our Fifth Form and Upper Sixth with optimism, given their dedicated preparation.

School House is blessed with musical talent across all years. Thomas Punt distinguished himself in the Solo House Music competition on the trumpet, with commendable performances from George Hastings, Neel Agrawal, Leo Chan, Marcus Ho, and Beau VaughanHawkins. Throughout the year Joseph Boardman, Nick Hunt, George Hastings, Beau Vaughan-Hawkins, Marcus Ho and Leo Chan participated in numerous concerts and School events, showcasing their dedication and exceptional musical abilities.

On stage, Joseph Boardman and Hugo Blackwell were outstanding in the School’s Senior Production of West Side Story Ethan Masterson and Marcus Ho also showcased dramatic flair in the Fourth Form production of One Man in His Time

One of the year’s highlights is the selection of the School Monitors. This year, James Hobbs and Neel Agrawal were chosen from School House, and I am confident they will represent us with pride and distinction.

We bid farewell to both Miss Cronin and Mrs Hibell who retire after a combined forty-four years at Bromsgrove School. We are grateful for their care and support and wish them all the best in their future endeavours.

Being part of School House this year has been a privilege and a reward. Boys, you make us proud. It’s an honour to be part of your collective journey.

Thomas Cookes

Thomas Cookes is one of the most competitive and successful Houses at Bromsgrove School. Much achievement has been made in the classroom, and I would particularly like to mention Serisha Sunner who achieved a Gold Award in the Chemistry Olympiad, putting her in the top 8% of the country. This year, we welcomed our new Housekeeper, Jo, following Lorraine’s retirement, and our pupils have been helping her to settle into our close-knit House community.

There is no denying that we are very successful on the sports field. We have won Junior House hockey, both Senior and Junior swimming competitions, the 1.2s relays, the Junior netball, the first ever girls’ House football competition, the Junior and Senior tennis and Senior rounders.

Many of the TC girls have been involved in both Senior and Junior drama this year. Amelia Rowe, Evie Hastings, Ella Kenyon and Rumer Evans were involved in the main School production of West Side Story. Ella Kenyon, Rumer Evans, Lola Broadhurst, Immy Marsh and Maiyla Danby-Norman were involved in One Man in His Time. Once again, our competitive edge was apparent in House Drama. We won the Junior drama with a wonderful excerpt from Blood Wedding. We were also runners up in the Senior House drama competition.

In music, we have competed to a high level and were rewarded with the most participation in one House in the solo competition. Well done to all involved. It was really the House music ensemble that was most prolific. Don’t Stop Believin’ (by Journey) was great fun and TC won a special adjudicators’ award from the Headmaster.

TC have also enjoyed many social events this year. A ball, a House breakfast, a House picnic, House pancakes and a House Easter egg hunt. The PA have also worked hard on the Summer party where we had a BBQ and zorbing. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the TCPA for all their hard work.

I would also like to thank the TC tutors who work very hard to ensure the development of all the girls in TC.

House awards this year have been numerous – the Junior music and drama award went to Ella Kenyon, with the Senior award to Amelia Rowe.

In House sport, the Junior award went to Farah Croce and the Senior award to Millie Moberley.

Our Sixth Form House Prizes were awarded to the following students:

Endeavour CupAmelia Rowe

Collins Best SportswomanLucy Hatfield Commitment to TCNancy Broadhurst

The Maund Cup for Fulfilling PotentialSerisha Sunner

Our Monitors’ Awards were also presented at the end of term to Meegan Cartwright and Nelly Len (sport), Luci Meadows and Megan Humphries (music and drama), Holly Carter (peer support), Tilly Fountain and Poppi Fryer (charities), Gabbie Billig (committees), Lexie Wright (Deputy Head of House) and Emily Collett (Head of House).

The Special House Prizes are much sought after and were awarded to:

Thank you to all our Upper Sixth members for being a superb year group and I look forward to following your progress from afar in your next steps after Bromsgrove.

Walters

In what marks my eighth year at the helm of Walters House (matching the time I spent in WG), I continue to love my job. This year, more so than the ones before, marked a real change in the culture of Walters House. Not only have we excelled on the sports field like many years before, but we have now dominated on the stage. This change is at the heart of what we are now, a Waltonian community that is welcoming and accepting of the varied strengths and skills that we possess, and for this reason, I continue to be so proud of my boys, and it is fitting that I leave it to my outgoing Head of House to summarise the year passed.

For Walters House, the 2023/24 academic year has seen many highs, from our valiant efforts in House Song to the sporting fields where we are so highly regarded. The House has maintained its high spirits and distinct sense of togetherness, which bands the boys together and defines Walters as a community.

2024 has been a success for Walters in the sporting department, including Senior tennis, where Matt Saunders and Toby Ward (Fifth Form) managed to clinch victory against fierce competition. A strong performance in the annual 1.2 relays saw us finish third, as well as hard fought competitions across the various sports in which all who competed did the House proud.

This year’s annual House Song competition saw an excellent rendition of Bob Marley’s Three Little Birds, expertly conducted by Ed Thompson and overseen by the House Monitor team. Despite harsh comments from the invigilator, the boys did the House proud. Not only was our performance impressive, but it was also one which was creative, and through Will Beaney (Upper Sixth) and two of the Lower Fourth pretending to be birds, instigated laughter across the School. This year’s musical accomplishments don’t stop there - the House Ensemble performed an award-winning piece –Logical Song – another example of Walters’ recent diversification into a more musical and artistic House. In combination with the increasing success in House Drama competitions, this year we have seen Tanvir Biran (Fifth Form) and Harry Bradley (Lower Sixth) perform a piece from The Caretaker, which was very highly regarded across the School as a result of all their hard work.

None of this would be possible without the hard work and dedication of the tutor team and Mr Bell. Responsible for organising and motivating the House, the tutors have been instrumental in ensuring the day-to-day running of Walters, as well as suggesting ways in which things can be improved – such as Mr Summerfield’s introduction of House teams and the Waltonian of the Week. The importance of these is critical in maintaining what is such a strong sense of community spirit within the House.

This year, the Parents’ Association have been incredible in organising and providing events for the boys to enjoy.

From the annual School House vs Walters House paintball at the start of the year, to the Walters barbecue at the end, the hard work of the PA has been evident to all. Notably, the Sixth Form Ball at Grafton Manor was particularly enjoyable for the students and parents involved, especially being able to donate to an important charity – Andy’s Man Club. Other events such as the Christmas drop in, lunch time pizzas and Easter eggs are all examples of the PA’s hard work and effort.

Finally, a hallmark of Walters House, and someone who all the boys go to, is our Housekeeper Lez. Whether it be cleaning up after the boys, keeping them in line or just being someone to talk to, Lez is key to Walters and without her, House life would not be the same.

To sum up the last few years in Walters House, as Will Beaney (Upper Sixth) put it ‘I have loved every minute’.

Oscar Jinks (Walters Head of House 2023-24)

What more can be said than we have had a blast and this development and growth is down to the continued leadership of Oscar and his Monitors. I have a great team of tutors that give their all to the boys, and the care and attention that Lez gives (in what is her twentieth year in the House) is unmatched. As I always say to the boys in our final assembly, “Men of Walters…I salute you” and this I say with all my heart. Thank you.

Wendron-Gordon

The boys of Wendron-Gordon are proud of their House and this has shone throughout this year. They are kind and considerate individuals who are proud to live in the House overlooking Gordon Green.

It has been my privilege to take over as Houseparent of Wendron-Gordon this year and to be joined by three new tutors, Mr Palmer, Miss Kinsella and Miss Arnold. We have also welcomed over thirty new students to the House, seeing us reach capacity at 137.

The strong tradition of drama in the House was kept well and truly alive this year with both House Drama plays being directed by Boris Belov. The Fourth Form performed an original Boris Belov piece entitled RED and they walked away with the runners-up prize for Best Play. Not to be outdone, the Senior Play Fahrenheit 451 was equally as good and saw Boris Belov awarded the Best Director prize, whilst Zeman Woo was awarded as Best Actor.

This year’s Unison House Song had the theme of numbers, and after much discussion amongst the Upper Sixth, This Love by Maroon 5 was chosen as our entry. Bob Tse, Bowen Cheung and Richard Huang did a fantastic job in getting us ready and the boys should be proud of their performance. In this year’s House Music, Jarry Xing won the intermediate competition, whilst Huxley Ngan was runner up in the advanced competition.

In sports competitions, WG have again been competitive and, without fail, the boys have always put in their best efforts for the House. What always shines through is that they are proud to represent their House. Success this year did come in the form of Fourth Form table tennis, Senior tennis and athletics competitions, whilst a highly competitive 1.2 relay saw us finish in second place.

We say goodbye to a wonderful group of boys in the Upper Sixth who have been ably led this year by Bob Tse and Shahaar Selim. They are a tight group of friends, and it has been lovely to see them throughout the year clearly enjoying each other’s company, whether that be over a game of pool or a Saturday night takeaway. I have no doubt that they have formed lifelong friendships and we look forward to them returning to their former House in years to come.

In our final House assembly of the year, we said our goodbyes to Mrs Hibell, who, after eighteen long years of service to WG and the School as a whole, has decided that it is time to call it a day and enjoy a well-earned retirement. She was given a fitting send off by the boys, who I know, like everyone associated with the House, will miss seeing her around next year. However, Mrs Hibell leaves with our very best wishes and we wish her all the best in this new chapter of her life. We also say goodbye to Miss Elwood-Adams who leaves us to join Housman Hall as the Assistant Houseparent and we wish her all the best as she takes up this new role.

At Commemoration Day it was wonderful to see many WG leavers’ ties up on stage. Nikolay Kovalikhin, Felix Rhode, Bowen Cheung and Richard Huang all collected academic prizes, whilst Nikolay also won the Alison Branley Memorial Prize for Mathematics and Senior Boarders’ prize.

Finally, huge thanks must go to Mrs Courtney, Dr Morris, our entire tutor team and our wonderful Housemothers, Mrs Hibell, Mrs Wilkins and Mrs DeverillSkelding who have worked tirelessly for the House throughout the year.

Paul Mullan (1997-2024)

Paul Mullan arrived at Bromsgrove in January 1997 as Head of Boys’ PE and i/c rugby. An alumnus of King Edward’s Aston, where he also taught, he was well known on that circuit, with a good allround sporting pedigree, including as a back row forward for Wasps in his day. The Headmaster of the time, Mr Taylor, was looking to stabilise what was then a smaller School, as well as to expand its horizons internationally and to build confidence in Bromsgrove’s offer of breadth in the local area. Twenty seven and a half years later, the School’s consistently high National reputation for its co-curricular programme is a clear reflection both of Mr Taylor’s shrewd decision and of the value of Paul himself in such a role.

Within his first term, Paul had turned a decent rugby 1st XV into winners of the National Daily Mail Plate competition. He was astute in harnessing the national move to professionalism of his beloved rugby to encourage the growth and ambition of the extra-curricular programme at Bromsgrove, in tandem with other success stories such as the girls’ 1st XI hockey also being National Champions. The rugby fixture list became less parochial so that A team players were challenged against stronger opposition, while C/D team players simply had an opportunity to represent their School in larger block fixtures, even if it did mean that we had to travel a little further on match days. That combination of excellence and participation is a proud legacy for Paul and other Heads of Games he has worked alongside, and highlighted by the current sporting Director roles, as well as the many specialist coaches who are now a part of our community.

First and foremost, Paul is a talented and proven rugby coach and the list of names who have achieved representative and international schoolboy honours at Bromsgrove – and indeed professional contracts beyond – is impressive. His service was formally recognised by the RFU in the last few years as an age grade coach for North Midlands, Midlands and England U18 teams. Equally, he was soon also i/c cricket, spending many hours on Lower Charford in the summer months, while still keeping tabs on how athletics was going at the Ryland Centre. In short, Paul is never happier than when seeing every pitch, astro, court or track in use on a Saturday afternoon by literally hundreds of teenagers playing a variety of different sports. There is no greater illustration of his belief that sport offers opportunities beyond a weekly fixture than the numerous team tours he has led and, more recently, encouraged, whether in the UK or internationally. Many of those tours have provided memorable moments which the pupils and staff on them are still likely to recall.

And yet, Paul’s input on the pastoral side of the School cannot be ignored. Within two terms of arriving at Bromsgrove, he was Assistant Housemaster in Walters, before becoming Housemaster of Elmshurst in September 1999 to guide that House through the Millennium. For seven years he lived and breathed all things Elmshurst as an extension of his own family, unwavering in his commitment, loyalty and visibility for his boys. Even as a public benchmark, the number of School Monitors and Heads of School drawn from the House ranks in his time is surely a mark of the standards that Paul expected from his ‘Men of Elmshurst’

Paul and Liz were a strong double act as Houseparents – more recently, he also supported Liz in her role as Houseparent of the Prep boarding House Honeysuckle – and the Housemaster role displayed his veneer of discipline and expectation thinly veiling the interest, warmth, humour and, frankly, the ‘big kid’ within. Paul’s success in the House was borne from the relationship he developed with the individual pupils in the House, often helped with a bit of light-hearted teasing. A conversation starting with a poker-faced “I’m really annoyed with you …” is still often punctured with a broad grin and Mullan chuckle to restore the given pupil’s normal pulse. Paul has always been a genial host, whether at Elmshurst House events or the Elmshurst evening bar of yesteryear which many OBs will fondly remember, holding court in the same way as he has more recently done as Front of House at Routh or Cobham, or even at the annual Lower Fourth Camp.

On leaving Elmshurst in 2006, Paul had more than shown his credentials to move fully to SMT and his current Deputy Head (Co-curricular) role. His success in that has been down to his own skills and talents, a sense of fairness in looking to encourage parity for all the co-curricular pursuits in the programme, but also to an institutional knowledge of this School at a level that most of us will probably only recognise when he is not in his study next year.

For colleagues, whatever their role, Paul has been not so much an enforcer as a source of advice, a sounding board, a listening ear and a facilitator. He far prefers having responsibility for organising the detail behind the scenes which enables the pupils and the public face of the School to shine. He has been the ‘fixer’ who can enact solutions with a scroll through the many contacts on his mobile in a matter of moments, and his meticulous eye for detail and planning, as well as his liaison with other colleagues, has elevated set-piece events to a level of finesse that was not the case in the School he joined.

When former Headmaster Mr Edwards once gave a Harry Potter-themed Commemoration Day Speech, there was gentle fun poked at several Senior members of staff, but Paul Mullan as Hagrid seemed quite appropriate – big in frame but a loyal champion for the spirit of Hogwarts and its pupils, whatever their talents, and a friend to colleagues young and old. It really is the end of an era for those of us who return in September, and the many visiting OBs who always affectionately ask ‘Is Mr Mullan still here?’ will not believe it either. We all genuinely wish Paul the longest and most fulfilling well-deserved retirement from Bromsgrove and hope that Liz and he continue to pay us the odd visit as their grandchildren come through the Bromsgrove system. We have all been privileged to work alongside Paul and Liz, benefitting from everything they have given to our community.

Sarah Cronin (1998-2024)

As we bid farewell to Sarah Cronin, it is with immense gratitude and respect that we reflect on her exceptional career at our School. Since joining us in 1998, Sarah has been a cornerstone of the Business Department, not only imparting her vast knowledge to countless students but also serving as an inspiring Head of Department, leading five different qualifications. Her professional approach to her work has set a high standard, consistently driving excellence in teaching and administration.

A former colleague has reflected on how, even when on maternity leave, Sarah would meet her for coffee to go through VCE case studies – she would never leave a colleague unsupported. This dedication to her peers further highlights her unwavering commitment to the School community. Her students have shared their heartfelt appreciation: “She is great at explaining difficult terms to everyone, in a way that anyone, no matter their level in business, would understand.” “She has always had our best interests at heart.” “I am sure that Mrs Cronin will be difficult to replace.” Without a doubt, Mrs Cronin is her student’s cheerleader, their advocate and supporter.

Sarah’s commitment to her role as a tutor has been nothing short of exemplary. Over the years, she has been a tutor in four Houses, most recently dedicating her efforts to School House. She has been known to take the time to guide, support and praise her tutees, seeking them out whenever they needed a helping hand. Her nurturing presence and genuine care have left a lasting impact on the students she mentored.

In her early years, Sarah contributed significantly to the Young Enterprise scheme, providing students with practical insights and real-world business experience. She has served as Assistant Head of Year, where her leadership and guidance have been instrumental in supporting students’ academic and personal growth. She has also participated in most activities that weren’t sports fixtures over the years, and she has been a valued part of the Combined Cadet Force (CCF). Her enthusiasm for the gym has inspired many to pursue a healthy and active lifestyle.

Sarah’s innovative spirit and unwavering commitment to her students have made her a beloved and irreplaceable member of our community. As we celebrate her retirement, we honour the legacy she leaves behind - one of dedication, excellence and heartfelt mentorship. We are also delighted for her as she will now have more time to spend in Cornwall and Ireland, enjoying the beautiful landscapes and well-deserved relaxation.

Senior Staff Leavers

Annika Eaton (2015-2024)

We have been so fortunate to have had Annika with us for the last nine years in the Senior School, but her connection with Bromsgrove goes back longer than this. She taught German in the Prep School from 2009-2012 and then had a brief stay in Oman when the family moved for her husband to take up a new position. Knowing how effective she had been in the Prep School, I was pleased when she applied for the post here and delighted when she accepted. Annika is everything you want in a modern languages teacher, in addition to being a native German speaker who speaks English better than me. She had high standards for the pupils, but was always encouraging, kind and helpful, showing the pupils clearly what they needed to do to achieve even more. She was always willing to give up time to support pupils who needed extra help and they respected and trusted her greatly.

Annika shared the department’s passion, as well as that of my own, for promoting the German language and culture, and the steady trickle over the years of pupils going on to read German at university was a great source of pleasure for her. She accompanied me numerous times on the German Exchange to Berlin and Potsdam and latterly on the German trip and was an excellent help. She made good friends with the exchange teachers over the years, and I know she enjoyed this aspect of the job.

In addition to her academic contributions, Annika could be seen in many other areas of School life. She would be the first to say that team games were not really her thing and has admitted to googling “What are the rules of netball / hockey?” minutes before having to face a group of girls and pretend she knew what she was doing. She was much more at home in the hills and has done every Silver Duke of Edinburgh expedition in her time here, as well as accompanying Bronze, Gold and Lower Fourth Camp. The girls of Mary Windsor will certainly miss such a caring, reliable tutor. Annika really enjoyed spending time with them and they benefited from her advice and wisdom. As a Sixth Form tutor, she guided the girls through their university applications and encouraged them to think about their futures.

Annika has been an excellent, professional, caring colleague and such people are not easily replaceable. She leaves us to go to an international school in Munich where she will be closer to family members. We will miss her greatly.

David Atkinson (2016-2024)

When David joined the Physics Department in 2016, we not only gained an exceptional physicist but also a passionate educator dedicated to inspiring his students. David’s approach to physics is analytical and methodical; he weighs every factor meticulously and formulates hypotheses with precision. His deep understanding and vast knowledge of the subject have been invaluable to our department, benefiting both colleagues and students alike.

David’s commitment to his students is unwavering. He places them at the heart of everything he does, constantly seeking innovative ways to support their learning. One of his notable contributions has been the development of his own website, designed to provide continuous support and resources to students throughout their academic journey. This platform has become an essential tool for many.

His passion for gaming has also found its way into his teaching methods. David has ingeniously incorporated gamification into his lessons, creating engaging and challenging tasks that motivate and stretch his students. This approach has not only enhanced his own classes but has also influenced the teaching strategies of the entire department.

His ability to blend education with elements of gaming has proven to be a powerful tool in capturing students’ interest and promoting a deeper understanding of complex concepts.

David’s love of coding has led him to make significant contributions outside the traditional classroom setting. He has been instrumental in the success of the School’s robotics club where he has shared his expertise and enthusiasm for coding with students. His dedication to the club culminated in the creation of an internal robotics competition encouraging students to push the boundaries of their talents and explore new areas of interest.

In addition to his academic and extracurricular contributions, David has been a core member of the boarding team at Housman Hall since his arrival. As a tutor, he holds his tutees to the highest standards while granting them the freedom to make their own decisions and learn from their mistakes. His approach fosters independence and resilience, qualities that are essential for personal growth.

David’s impact on the School and his students is profound. He has consistently demonstrated excellence in teaching, an innovative spirit, and a deep commitment to the holistic development of his students. As we reflect on his time with us, David has made an indelible mark on our community. His departure to pursue new ventures, while a loss for us, is a testament to his relentless pursuit of knowledge and growth. We look forward to seeing the future successes he will undoubtedly achieve.

Gunny Patel (2019-2024)

Gunny is going to be very much missed as a colleague, teacher and tutor, although this is his third time leaving Bromsgrove school, so perhaps he is going to miss us just as much. I know for certain that he will pine after his beloved Maths department and the ‘well organised’ and ‘funny’ teachers therein. His colleagues have appreciated his constant positivity and melodious whistling, whilst describing Gunny as a ‘safe pair of hands’ who was always willing to step up and try something new to help the department.

Gunny’s love for Sci-fi is unmatched, and he can often be found talking with likeminded colleagues about the latest releases or, indeed, vintage series. He has enriched our student body with lectures on the lessons that can be learnt from the United Federation of Planets.

Gunny Patel is the definition of collegiate, and I wish him the very best. In the future, no longer will the male members of the common room be greeted with a cheerful ‘hello young man’. No longer will every mint flavoured chocolate disappear from the Housman office the moment Thursday supper is over. No longer will the far corner of the mezzanine be out of bounds for all but the bravest of colleagues, and we are all poorer for it.

Jacqui McCarthy (2020-2024)

Whether hanging from a zip-wire in Wales, on the lookout for bargains to up-cycle (eventually) or planning the next adventure, Jacqui’s passion for life is a joy to behold. Born in Scotland, she spent most of her life in Shropshire. Before Bromsgrove, Jacqui taught English and was Department Head before specialising in SEND and a Teacher of the Deaf. Moving to a school for children with Autism, she juggled the roles of Assistant Head, Head of English, Exams Officer and SENDCo all at once, which sounds like a very Jacqui thing to do.

Joining Bromsgrove during the pandemic as Head of Curriculum Support, she was placed in Oakley House as a boarding tutor and brought her wealth of experience to both roles. Having a teacher who was so committed to getting the best out of every student made her a real asset to boarding life, and so it was no surprise when Jacqui moved to Elmshurst to support Matt Giles as his Assistant Houseparent two years later.

Jacqui’s boundless energy and compassionate nature means she was an ideal addition to Elmshurst. Her maternal nature has made her such an integral part of the boys’ lives, and she will be sorely missed by them next year.

One member of staff commented that Jacqui is “full of love to give” and another acknowledges that she is “adored by the boys”; that warmth is evident from breakfast to evening duty, through weekends and at lock-ups. She is a selfless colleague, but it is also fair to say that she has been enriched by the lives of the boarders in her care and perhaps they have inspired her to take the next exciting step in her career.

Jacqui, her husband Jason, and girls Bella and Josie are about to embark on an extraordinary adventure overseas as she begins her new role as Director of Student Support Services at KTJ School in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This is a typical Jacqui move: embrace every opportunity, feel the fear but do it anyway.

As a colleague, Jacqui has been a true professional, bringing stability, warmth and vision to her roles at Bromsgrove. As a friend, we will miss her quick wit, wicked sense of fun and especially her kindness. As the Malaysian proverb goes, “One can pay back the loan of gold, but one lies forever in debt to those who are kind.” Jacqui’s friends and colleagues will forever be in her debt.

Paul Prouse (2020-2024)

Paul’s journey with us began during the challenging times of the pandemic in 2020. Starting in such an unusual period, he quickly adapted to the blended learning environment and demonstrated an exceptional ability to support his students through the transition.

From the outset, Paul proved to be a valuable member of our community, always ready to lend a hand. He was a key supporter of the Guardian Angels programme, contributing to its success from the beginning, and providing key support to our students at a difficult time.

Paul’s passion for astronomy has been a shining star at Bromsgrove. He not only managed but also expanded our astronomy programme, transforming it into one of the School’s standout activities. By taking on the fledgling solar observation plans and integrating them with the Prep School, Paul has inspired a diverse group of students. His initiative to arrange for moon rocks from NASA further exemplified his commitment to providing unique and enriching experiences for students across different age groups.

In addition to his contributions to astronomy, Paul has shown a keen interest in the Combined Cadet Force (CCF). His dedication to this area led him to expand his knowledge and ultimately gain his commission. Paul’s involvement with the CCF has been marked by his enthusiasm and commitment to the development of the students under his guidance.

Paul’s impact extends beyond academics and extra-curricular activities. He has been actively involved in tutoring within both day and boarding environments. His consistent support and encouragement have enabled his tutees to reach their full potential. Paul’s approach to tutoring is characterised by a balance of high expectations and a supportive environment, fostering both academic and personal growth.

Paul’s contributions to life at Bromsgrove have been significant. His passion, and dedication have left their mark on our community. While his departure is a loss, we are grateful for the time Paul has spent with us and look forward to witnessing the future achievements he will undoubtedly accomplish.

Lydia Xu (2023-2024)

Lydia joined Bromsgrove in September 2023 for her Early Career Teaching pathway into the profession, having completed her PGCE at University College London. At interview, we recognised we would be fortunate to host Lydia as a colleague, and, indeed, she has proven a gem of a teacher, delivering very high quality teaching in a safe and secure learning environment.

Academically, Lydia has been proud of the progress her Fifth Form students have made, and they have been grateful for her care and expertise at such a crucial stage in their education. She has very much enjoyed the freedom and flexibility to develop well-resourced practicals in our curriculum. Lydia fully acknowledges the value of Bromsgrove’s ECT training programme, with her favourite sessions being those that have developed her pedagogical awareness –from remembering the forgetting curve, to establishing routine retrieval practice – and also the fun bits, such as voice training. She confides that the support she has received from all angles really helped ease her into the Bromsgrove ethos, and very much facilitated her ongoing professional development as a teacher.

Lydia sought to build links with the Prep School by hosting a weekly Science Club for younger pupils, ensuring they had great fun whilst on the Senior campus, with a highlight being a STEM project to design and make electronic Christmas cards. She also brought a novel facet to co-curricular with the Cantonese Club, training students in the pronunciation and contextual use of everyday language – this sometimes extended out to yummy Dim Sum. However, the aspect of Bromsgrove that Lydia has relished the most is participating in our boarding life, being a tutor in Oakley House. She has adored building bonds with the students outside of the laboratory, helping them in their academic studies whilst on duty, and listening to their everyday stories they have been only too happy to share. Whilst it is with sadness we bid farewell, we also share Lydia’s excitement for her next adventure – she is returning to Shanghai with her husband and son to head up a department at a successful tutoring business, and naturally we wish them well and all the very best for the future.

Caroline Leather (1992-2015; 2017-2023)

We have yet again said goodbye to Mrs Leather at the end of the Michaelmas Term. The latest reincarnation of Mrs Leather, post Kenya, has seen her as part of the Science department and in Curriculum Support, and she has certainly made the PSHE role her own. The pupils have flourished their fivers and boxed their way out of stress, amongst many other exciting lesson adventures. Whatever Mrs Leather has turned her hand to, she has always given it one hundred percent. Her endless enthusiasm, ability to smile in the face of adversity, her unbounded positivity and determination to put the pupils first has always been obvious. But now it is time for yet another new adventure. Mrs Leather will be missed but we wish her a restful and productive retirement.

Kim Guest (2020-2024)

Kim Guest has been an exceptional member of our staff team, dedicating her time and talent to teaching maths, sport and gaining her QTS. From the moment Miss Guest arrived in the Preparatory School, she has been a ray of sunshine whose priorities have always been ensuring those around her are happy. Her colleagues comment on her unwavering help and support.

Kim’s commitments to games, boarding and, more recently, maths have been extensive and all encompassingpersonifying the Bromsgrove values - and Caldicott are very lucky to be gaining such a well-rounded and committed educator. Her kind, thoughtful and considerate attitude towards everything she does means that so many of us have happy memories. She will be remembered fondly for many years to come.

Jordan Balkham (2019-2024)

Jordan Balkham started working at the Prep School in September 2019 as a teacher of English but has taken on many roles since. She has been a committed sports coach, Head of Year 7, Girls on Board Guru, Boarding Tutor, Finger Knitting Queen, Kahoot creator and more.

Jordan has been a wonderful colleague; she is loyal, caring and supportive. She absolutely adores the pupils and is always committed to ensuring that the children have challenging, interesting and exciting lessons in front of them. She has worked tirelessly to write new schemes of work for the English department and produced amazing resources for the Year 7 Fantasy Scheme. In addition, she has organised the Eisteddfod for the last few years and always ensures that it is a seamless, enjoyable day. She has attended the Year 6 and Year 8 residentials during her time at the School and is willing to have a go at pretty much anything.

Next year, Jordan moves on to teach at the Senior School, which will be a fantastic new challenge in tackling both the IB and A Levels. We have no doubt that she will continue to succeed and inspire our older children at the School.

We wish her all the best for her exciting move and for her upcoming wedding. She will return to School as the wonderful Mrs Hadley.

John Licqurish (2021-2024)

John joined Bromsgrove during the second lockdown in January 2021. Meeting students over Zoom and trying to build a rapport with them is not the easiest way to begin your time in any job, let alone teaching where forging relationships is paramount to success. However, John approached this head on and quickly gained a positive reputation for being fun, enthusiastic and above all, a good teacher. His encouragement of the younger pupils to broaden their reading horizons and try new and different authors has been very effective. In the Summer of 2021, John took an active role in the working party for the change of the Prep School AEO descriptors, drawing on his previous experience of being an academic lead to assist in this change. He has presented a Whole School Teach-Meet on ‘Oracy’ and, for the last two years, he has been the Head of International Projects, regularly meeting with the Senior leaders from all the Schools within the Bromsgrove family.

John has been of invaluable assistance to me in the Drama department. When I had to take time off for a family bereavement, he didn’t think twice about taking on extra lessons to cope with my absence and for that I am eternally grateful. He has taken an active role in all the Prep School productions since 2022, directing the Year 6 performance of The Witches in the summer of 2023 to great success. His experience and enthusiasm have helped to make the experience enjoyable, not only for the pupils but for the rest of the Drama team. I will miss him as a colleague and friend, but our loss is the gain of Tewkesbury School, and we all wish him the best of luck going forward.
