Issue 7 finally makes it to the chopping block. January Transworld listed us in a ‘zine article. Pg. 110 of the issue if your interested or even own a copy of Transworld. Heard through the rumor mill Concussion may or may not be quitting for the umpteenth time which sucks because that is the goods right there. We had more people help out with this issue than ever before so you might find some interest within these pages. Pissbat and whiny internet babble seems to be the rage this month. It pretty funny all these guys arguing about when to hit a fire pool and you see them skating the park and they cant even hit the coping on the 3 foot stuff. Joey from Paying in pain kicked down the mother load of photos for this issue so go check out that mag before you sleep tonight. On a side note, if you ever have a problem with something or someone, you should try talking to them like a man instead of sending emails to their supervisor and trying to stir the pot, kook. Some shit to check online is royal Hawaiian pool service.com for Gary Owen’s bag of ill shots of the sessions we all would kill for. B.M.Ed

Coffinsmoke won the new Scarecrow Deck with this photo of the best tard photo contest.

Dead Guy Ale is a maibock, a German-style lager. I was very happy to come across the growler sized bottle. A bit too large to hide quickly if you need to, but just the right size to cause a bit of damage. The taste is a bit more hearty if your used to pounding the pabst so be warned. If you like that type of beer this one is up your alley for sure.

The Coopers Brewery Microbrewery Kit is the world’s best selling beer making kit for good reason. It is designed to give you everything you need to brew 6 gallons of your own high quality, completely natural, great tasting beer every time.

If your ever on a road trip and camping near a water soucre, heres a cheap way to make a killer fishing lure. Its pretty much self explanatory and it’ll really work.

Steelhead Double IPA - Mad River Brewery. Served this double IPA slightly chilled in a pint glass, from a twelve ounce brown bottle. Poured a somewhat hazy copper amber color. One finger of fizzy, thin off-white head formed and quickly faded, leaveing almost no lace behind. Smell was quite citrusy, orange peel and lemon zest, hops, with quite a bit of malt in the background. Some nice earthy aromas were noted as well. The flavor was that nice west coast IPA flavor I was expecting. Tons of citrusy hops, a bit of resiny pine, and a sweet maltiness to back up the hops. A very flavorful yet bitter finish. A nice big full bodied, palate coating mouthfeel. Light carbonation and very drinkable. A pretty solid, well balanced double IPA in my opinion.

Chris Mumma is one of the few kids from Dana Point worth skating with. Style for days and faster than whatever you think you can rock. His current sponsors are DBC ride shop and Lost Clothing. If your ever around the san clemente skatepark and you see a blur go by, it probably was Chris working off his Coors Lunch.

Another faux-skate-manifesto by a another magazine editor If I hear one more person mention 2012 I’m gonna break some thumbs. It’s not a Mayan prophesy, the calender is only a representation of cosmic alignments.. you know, astrology. You know, the shit that, that has been discredited for centuries. Then everyone is like, well if 2012 isn’t gonna get us, then the technological singularity happening in approximately 2032 will for sure. Truthfully, that shit is scary as fuck, but still, even if it does, fuck it. Fuck this place, do you really want the current crop of message board administrators to live on for eternity in virtuallongboard heaven? What I am really worried about is if we upload our brains into hard drives, 22 stair ollies will be too easy. If we all start living in computers fun will no longer exist. Skateboarding will no longer be relevant. Nobody knows for sure, but it’s hard to look around and not draw a few conclusions. If the future really is the emotionless data gaze I’ll fucking see you there busting up their virtual utopia. If the electricity goes out one day (I still cannot fathom how many eggs are in that basket), keep pushing that too. make your own boards, in direct opposition of what is supposed to happen. These pictures are a few weeks in Fresno, California. A place nobody really gives half a flying fuck about and big white pickups outnumber high school graduates. It is a training ground for separating bullshit from the real shit. Skateboarding flourishes here and that is what really rules. Straight up. Fuck the future. Fuck yesterday. Let’s get this over with today.

The Marginal Way skatepark is a local DIY project built with volunteer labor and contributions. Its mission is to create a legal recreational facility for skateboarders in the City of Seattle. The recent decisions by the City of Seattle and Seattle Center to tear down the legal skateparks in the city (Ballard Skatepark, Seaskate) and rebuild them at a later date motivated local skateboarders to begin construction on a small concrete skate area in the industrial SODO district.

Marg

The site, located under a highway on-ramp, was primarily used as transient campground and was littered with garbage, human waste and graffiti. Clean up and construction in and around the area began in October 2004 with the approval of the surrounding businesses.

The Marginal Way skatepark was originally intended as a interim solution by the Seattle skateboard community to bridge the gap between the demolition and promised reconstruction of the two city skateparks. However, the lack of legal facilities for the thousands of Seattle skateboarders remains an issue. Skateboarding, by recent estimates, is one the fastest growing recreational activities the US today and is enjoyed by millions of participants, yet the City of Seattle is destroying it’s approved skateboarding facilities. The Marginal Way project is currently navigating the City of Seattle’s permitting process. Please help save the Marginal Way skatepark. We need your support.

Review Time Learn to Ride a Skateboard - This video is the best, the kids from Everybody Loves Raymond are in it, so you know the skating is off the hook. Check out their website for a disclaimer about Eric Brittian and some qulaity footy of Mandeline’s Slam. Worth the check for the slam. I really dont know why this video came to us, but now that it has,it appears my kid was more pumped on thomas the train. The actual value held within this dvd is undescribable. This is probably hands down as good as Ditch Dogs so get it quick! - RMG Scavenger Skateboards sent over this meaty sized ride, 8.5 and rock solid. The graphic was enjoyable and the board felt nice. I dont normally ride as big a board so I only rode a few pools with this ride. If you like bigger boards, this boards for you. I dont think they have a website, but they have a myspace page, just search for Scavenger Skatebboards. I think this is the second pro truck out from Indy and they are pretty rad. 139’s with some fast ass paint make for a good ride. Andrew Renyolds is more than worthy to have his name on a set of Indy’s so check them out. I had to swap out my old bushings cause I hate new ones, but most people do. Independenttrucks.com

Etnies Faction Black Labels - Rigged up a set iof these and was plesently suprised that they were good to skate in. Thin sole so you could actually feel your board and grippy vulcanized rubber make this shoe a good one to get if you like old school vans or something similar. They seem light and withstood a good amount of abuse without falling completly apart. Worth a check out if your in the market for a new pair of kicks.

Reviews - Kevin H. Knife Fight – Crisis LP (Lengua Armada) KNIFE FIGHT finally hung up their boots after playing for about 5 years. While a lot of Southern California bands were still influenced by Strife and the late 80’s Revelation sound, KNIFE FIGHT went back to the basics with more of an early Boston hardcore influence. The Crisis 12” is the last release the band put out and it does them justice. It starts off with “Held Back”, which has a good intro to get things rolling and then jumps right into it. Topics range from the current Iraq situation to liars, shit-talkers, and general things you think about when you’re ready to snap. Musically, the record is standard KF fare reminiscent of the first 7” with subtle Discharge and Negative Approach influences; particularly the chorus of “Lies” and the bass intro of “Live Your Life”. Parts of side two, especially “Apathetic”, sound like Burning Bridges era material. The last track “Crisis” is like a modern day “How Much Art”. If you like early hardcore like Negative FX or Negative Approach, then definitely give this a listen. Reagan SS – Universal and Triumphant (Rebel Sound) Reagan SS is definitely one of the better L.A. bands that are out right now. They’re one of those bands that get better with each subsequent release. After releasing a couple killer 7”s, they put out the 2006 demo which showed the direction they were moving in. While musically not as fast as the first two 7”s, this record basically picks up where the Bon Apetit 7” left off. One thing that makes them stand out is that they have a distinctive bass tone that compliments their overall sound. The beginning of “Forced Entry” is reminiscent of Germs’ “Lexicon Devil” (the slower version on the 7”). “Gut Me I’m Yours” follows that and is probably one of the more stand out tracks of the album. The intro is instantly memorable and shows that you don’t have to play at 100 miles an hour in order to write a good song. My personal favorites are “The Bombing Starts” and “Pests”; probably two of the more aggressive tracks on the record. There are a couple tracks on here that are obviously filler, but so what? Start to finish, this shit smokes. Loud & Clear – s/t (Six Feet Under) From the band’s name and Kevin Crowley inspired cover art, you think you’re going to hear some Abused / early NYHC worship. At least that’s the way the band presents themselves. The vocals sound like a Ray Cappo impersonation. Musically, the record sounds more like Youth Of Today’s “We’re Not In This Alone”. Other sources make comparisons to Straight Ahead, but I don’t hear it. The record is okay, but nothing groundbreaking. There are a couple decent songs on here. The main riff of “Times End” is pretty cool, but the breakdown section pretty much ruins it. I’m sure the Bridge 9 crowd will be into this type of thing, but overall this record isn’t that great. My advice: if you’re going to rip off a band’s cover art and logo, you better be able to back it up with something musically equivalent.

Double Negative - The Wonderful And Frightening World Of Double Negative (No Way Records) This record is bad ass. There’s a bunch of stuff going on in their songs. You can hear influences from VOID, Discharge, and early Corrosion Of Conformity. But they clearly have their own identity, never sounding like a rip-off or clone of those other bands. Lyrically, the topics mostly deal with non-conformity and hating the outside world; which would make sense since they’re not following anyone else’s fashions or trends that are prevalent in today’s punk and hardcore scenes. This band rocks, plain and simple. Be sure to check them out on January 17th in L.A. and January 18th at The Clinic in Santa Ana. Broken Needle – s/t (Lengua Armada) Broken Needle is probably one of the better live bands on the west coast right now. Their songs have memorable sing-along parts and their singer Todd is all about audience participation. Musically, they have an early Uniform Choice influence. The LP is mostly comprised of songs that were on their demo along with a few new songs. The new tracks on here fucking rip, especially “Consequences”. If that’s the direction that they’re going in, then their next release should be really good. This record was probably one of the most anticipated releases for 2007. They’ve gone through a couple line-up changes, but seem to be more stable now. Hopefully they’ll record more material and play more shows.

The Rival Mob – Bitter Rivals demo Rival Mob is from Boston, but sound like they’re from New York circa 1985/86. They remind me of mid-tempo Rest In Pieces, especially in the production. Musically, this is excellent. Great intros and songwriting. “Mind Closed For Life” would be a good example of this. Lyrically, they’re on point and they come across in straight forward manner. Some of the greatest bands came out of Boston. 99% of the current bands on Bridge 9 and related labels are garbage. Labels like that are watering things down musically and lyrically, and instead are focusing more on an image that appeals to 14 year olds that shop at Hot Topic. The lyrics of “Upside Down” reflect this. These days, bands like this are few and far between. There aren’t many current bands that speak out about what’s going on around them; they typically go with the flow until they’re not the flavor of the week anymore. Then they start another shitty band and are quick to point out their ex-member status in order to generate interest. Rival Mob has former members of Lovely Lads, another great band. But rather than cashing in Paying in Pain - Issue 23 - Another killer on their ex-member status, they let the music speak for itself. issue with the typical paying in pain quality. Go to this website and then send ‘em 2 bucks. Check out the Paying in Pain section in this issue for a taste of what your missing without a copy by your crapper. http://payinginpain.com
