01 TIDEWATER Community Development Fall 2023

Tidewater is a 4,200-acre New Urbanist community located in James City County, Virginia. The site was designed with two main goals: to build with the environment, not against it; and to design with the pedestrian in mind, not the car.

These ideas tend to overlap through the use of dense clusters of development. By building in dense clusters, most of the site is preserved for conservation while also creating an inviting and walkable environment for residents and visitors.

The Linear Park, which is illustrated here, serves to meet this goal by providing a long stretch of greenspace to surrounding mixed-use neighborhoods.

The philosophy of “5-minuteneighborhoods” is applied to the majority of the developed areas, ensuring that one’s daily needs could be obtained within a 5-minute walking distance from their house. Tidewater seeks to combine urban and rural, which is something that modern suburbs have promised to deliver, but have been unable to. Through the use of dense clusters, residents are encouraged to interact with their neighbors and explore their natural surroundings by foot.

ArcGIS Analysis ArcGIS was used both at the state level and site level in order to fully understand the 4,200acre site. Such a detailed analysis allowed me to confidently choose spots on the site that are were most appropriate for development.

Design Process

After my analysis, I identified my town center: a relatively flat, high area of the site located near a sequence of existing roads. Once functional elements were placed, such as schools and parks, I began designing a grid for the town.

Precedents, such as Boston, Massachusetts and Brattleboro, Vermont were carefully studied for their nontraditional grids.

Masterplan All design elements were included with the environment in mind. Through the use of a fluid grid, grading was limited and clusters of development were primarily built on natural high points. This means that the majority of the site can be dedicated to a conservation easement. There are miles of pedestrian and bike paths to provide circulation throughout the design, but also to allow people to experience the beauty of the site.

02 SANFORD DRIVE

Campus Development Fall 2022 Sanford Stadium, the 17th largest stadium in the world, is undoubtedly the most visited and treasured location on campus. It is located in the middle of campus, just by the Miller Learning Center and the Tate Student Center.

Nearly 100,000 passionate fans fill the stadium whenever the Bulldogs are playing. On these days, Sanford Drive, the bridge adjacent to the stadium, is closed to vehicular traffic for the day in order to allow pedestrians to freely walk to the stadium.

This Sanford Drive redesign looks to extend this pedestrian-oriented mentality to the other 358 days of the year when the Bulldogs are not playing.

Through the use of a road diet, the design looks to transform the street into a space that prioritizes those not in a car.

Furthermore, with the use of street trees and perennials, the design would be a lively area to walk through or relax in.

Planting beds, which also serve as seating, divide the 46-foot wide street into a oneway bus lane, bike lanes, and a sidewalk.

03 HILL

RESIDENCE Residential Design Spring 2023

This infill housing project in Athens, Georgia aims to turn an unused park into a beautiful and accessible residence for an elderly couple. The design seeks to create different “rooms” throughout the site for the clients to enjoy. Though perennials and trees line the property and buildings, the couple wished to preserve as much lawn as possible in order to give space for their grandkids to play. To ensure that the lawn drains properly, two swales that lead to rainwater gardens were proposed.

The couple wished to have different functions on their .4 acre property, such as a seating area and a vegetable garden. The placement of the house and garage created a small courtyard, which includes a fire-pit and flagstone pavers.

The south end of the site contains the couple’s vegetable garden. The garden consists of six wooden raised beds and is comfortably tucked near the existing Beech and Magnolia trees on the site.

04 PERSONAL WORKS

Since the first day of my hand graphics class, sketching has become one of my favorite aspects of landscape architecture. It’s a powerful tool to quickly convey design concepts and acts as a universal language in communication. Additionally, I have grown to love on-site sketching, which forces you to observe every detail of a space. Watercolor has been my primary tool, but I enjoy experimenting with other mediums, such as pastels and acrylic paint.

The following includes many drawings from my sketchbooks, as well as renderings from projects that are not included in my portfolio.
