Welcome Welcome, everyone, to Broadway Showtunes 2021. We are so thrilled to have the opportunity of staging our flagship production this year.

Since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, we have all embraced many “new normals” and challenges and cherished so many things that perhaps we previously took for granted.

Here at BIGLITTLE Theatre School, we have much to be grateful for. There has been unstinting support and belief from every quarter. Parents, students, friends, associates, staff, superb guest creatives and alumni have ensured that BIGLITTLE could weather the storm. The school has operated throughout the toughest of months and has been able to provide an everchanging style of teaching, to the highest possible standard.

Incredible projects and workshops have taken place and some unique and memorable video productions and showcases have been produced.

It is because of huge determination, creative thinking, blood sweat and tears, that BIGLITTLE has been able to provide such a range of exciting and professional training for all ages, including vital training and preparation for LAMDA examinations and for those students preparing for top theatre school auditions this year.

Staging our much-loved “Broadway Showtunes” production became a reality when the Coronavirus Roadmap was announced.

Ordinarily, meticulous planning for this annual production starts nine months in advance. However, as I write (three weeks before opening night) it is still yet to be confirmed where the show will actually be staged (Pavilion or the BIC?)!? We were cautiously optimistic that Step 4 of the roadmap would be implemented on June 21st. We were, of course, mindful that a delay was possible. With this, BIGLITTLE’s own “Production Roadmap, with Plans A, B, C, D, etc was also brilliantly and tirelessly masterminded,

by Colin Billing and a superb team. The dedicated teams, in every department, have been fuelled with positivity and encouragement.

They are ready to respond to any adaptations, tweaks and logistical alterations that might be necessary, with very little notice, and with the top priority always being to ensure that BIGLITTLE’s talented and deserving youth theatre students are given the opportunity to shine in this unique production. We are indebted to the huge support of our friends at BH Live, particularly the operations and box office staff and most especially one of our youth theatre parents, Simon Bagnall – in his capacity as venue technical supervisor at the BIC & Pavilion.

We sincerely hope you enjoy this 20th production of our Broadway Showtunes style of show. In September, the school will proudly reach its 25th Silver anniversary landmark. With your continued support and belief, BIGLITTLE Theatre School can look forward to the future with confidence and excitement. Thank you.

Co-founded back in 1996 by Michelle Guy and Colin Billing, BIGLITTLE Theatre School is proud to be celebrating our 25th birthday this September.

Regarded as one of the South’s premier theatre school specialising in musical theatre, singing, acting and dance, we have over 300 talented students aged from 4 through to 19 years. Our tuition is delivered by a highly qualified team of professional teachers and directors, many of whom bring their expertise directly from the West End.

In recent years, numerous graduates have secured places at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts, The Arts Educational Schools London, Royal Central School of Speech & Drama, Guildford School of Acting (GSA), Rose Bruford College, East 15 Acting School, London School of Musical Theatre (LSMT), The Urdang Academy, Bodywork Company, LIPA, Millennium, Laine Theatre Arts, Drama Centre, Trinity Laban and others. Many are currently performing, directing and choreographing in the West End and on national and international tours.

An excellent reputation has been earned in the local and professional theatre world and good associations are maintained with London stage schools, celebrities and children’s charities for which the school has helped raise considerable sums of money. Higher levels of excellence are achieved year-on-year with numbers limited to maintain the high standard of teaching.

enabling personal excellence through performance As we move into a new academic year in September, we are super excited to be able to offer free trials for our extensive range of weekday classes for acting, dance and musical theatre, plus auditions for our Youth Theatre Companies for a September start.

THEATRE MACHINE - MUSICAL THEATRE CLASSES FOR STUDENTS IN RECEPTION TO YEAR 6 For children in Reception to Year 6 who are interested in singing, dancing and acting and want to join a fun and vibrant class,Theatre Machine offers a range of ‘age-appropriate’ classes on a Monday evening in Boscombe, Wednesday’s in Ringwood and Friday evenings in Christchurch. We also offer Theatre Machine on a Saturday morning in Bournemouth. Theatre Machine is open to everyone and we offer all students the opportunity to come along for a free trial before enrolling in the class.

ACTING AND DANCE For students who are interested in acting, we offer an extensive LAMDA Examination Program and a variety of non-syllabus acting classes and workshops.

We also offer weekday performance dance classes for our Youth Theatre students in our dance studio in Christchurch.

AUDITION FOR YOUTH THEATRE, BE IN A SHOW! For students who love performing, creating theatre and who want to work at a faster pace, our Youth Theatre Companies are the perfect place to be!

The students performing tonight are members of four of our Youth Theatre companies: Footlights (Years 4 -6), Limelights (Years 7-9), Starlights (Year 10 and above), and PDP (Year 12 and above).

PDP is our Professional Development Programme for students aspiring to train at the top theatre schools with a view to a career in the industry.

All rehearsals take place on Saturdays at Bournemouth School for Girls. Entry to all of our Youth Theatre Companies is by audition only. Our next round of auditions will be held on Saturday 11th September.

FOUNDATION YOUTH THEATRE In September 2019, we launched Foundation Youth Theatre. Foundation Youth Theatre is strictly for students in school years 1 - 4 and is a fast-paced course for children who are looking to progress to our Youth Theatre Companies. Covering all aspects of musical theatre, our Foundation Youth Theatre is held in the Performing Arts block at Bournemouth School For Girls where students get to work with our Youth Theatre creative teams. Entry to Foundation Youth Theatre is by an initial workshop or trial session and will prepare students for entry into Footlight Youth Theatre (entrance subject to audition).

BY OSCAR HAMMERSTIEN “You’ll Never Walk Alone” is a show tune from the 1945 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Carousel. It is sung by Nettie Fowler to comfort and encourage her cousin Julie Jordans after Julie’s husband - Billy Bigelow - falls on a knife and dies in a failed robbery attempt. It is reprised in the final scene when the deceased Billy, who has been granted a single day on Earth to redeem himself, silently motivates his unhappy daughter Louise during her graduation ceremony.

Newsies MUSIC BY ALAN MENKEN, LYRICS BY JACK FELDMAN Inspired by the Newsboys Strike of 1899, the informal strike leader, Jack Kelly, is part of a group of orphaned newsboys who live in Lower Manhattan.

After Jack confides in Crutchie, about his dreams of life out West “Santa Fe”, the newsies prepare for a day on the job. Together they find as much joy as they can in their life of poverty “Carrying The Banner”. As the Newsies rally together, the Brooklyn newsies finally show their support for the strike and head to the rally declaring “Brooklyns here!”. Together the Newsies publish their own newspaper - ‘Newsies Banner’ - to get the attention of the bigtime publishers.

In a graveyard Gomez introduces the Addams family, who have gathered to honor the cycle of life and death. Joined by his uptight wife Morticia, the entire family sings and dances on this special night celebrating what it truly means when you’re an Addams. They summon their ancestors to join them in this celebration, which involves line dancing, the bunny hop, the twist, and rigor mortis.

This 1910-1940’s ragtime medley showcases the melodic hooks and syncopated rhythms of Irving Berlin’s musical writing. The medley opens with a tongue-and-cheek salute to the glamour in show business, “There’s No Business Like Show Business”, and “Puttin’ on the Ritz”. This fades into “Alexander’s Ragtime Band” in the style of the Andrew Sisters an American close harmony singing group of the swing and boogie-woogie eras. With ragtime tinkle on the keys comes an arrangement of “I Love Piano” and “Handful of Keys’’, before the music bursts into the syncopation and rhythmic nuance of the swing period, “Let’s Face the Music and Dance.”

Everybody’s Talking About Jamie MUSIC BY DAN GILLESPIE SELLS, LYRICS BY TOM MACRAE Miss Hedge, the careers teacher, leads a class discussion about the students future. One student, Jamie New, reveals his dreams of becoming a drag queen “And You Don’t Even Know It”. Jamie continues to express who he truly is breaking through his mental barriers ‘Wall in My Head’. After receiving shiny red heels for his birthday, Jamie finds himself in the firing line at school by the bully Dean. Pritti, Jamie’s best friend, tries to cheer Jamie up and encourages him to go to prom in a dress, “Spotlight”. Jamie goes on to meet a group of drag queens and decides to start his own act. Finally, after encouraging even Dean to be kind for one night and to accept all, the whole cast join together in harmony “Out of the Darkness”.

Just as Norma hits rock bottom she receives a cryptic message from Paramount. Certain that DeMille (a famed director) is eager to discuss her new script, Norma drops in on the set greeted warmly by former colleagues. As she looks around, she is taken back with emotions, comforting herself in the homely sounds, sights, and smells of her past.

Mitzi Mitosis (Tick) is performing at a club ,“Downtown”, when his estranged wife Marion appears and reveals they have an 8 year old son, “Say A Little Prayer”. Alongside his two best friends, Bernadette and Felicia, the three drag queens travel through the Outback on a beaten-up tour bus, Priscilla Queen of the Desert. On the road they meet Shirley “Shirley’s Nightlife” and then kickstart a bar party “I Love the Nightlife”. While away, the bus is spray painted with hateful statements, together they paint over the hateful slurs ‘Colour My World’ and continue their journey, facing and overcoming each obstacle in their way.

The crew are back sailing the high seas after young cabin boy Jim Hawkins, The Great Gonzo and Rizzo the Rat hear the legend of Captain Flint’s massive treasure. They set out on a frantic search for a mysterious island “Shiver My Timbers/Sailing for Adventure” battling with high winds and surviving the completely ridiculous “Cabin Fever”, which causes trouble left, right and centre. They uncover a sinister plot by the villainous pirates led by Long John Silver, who seek the treasure for their own “The Attack”. Together they prove themselves and show the world what it’s like to be a “Professional Pirate”.

MUSIC AND LYRICS BY LIONAL BART The boys from an orphanage bemoan the fact that they only get gruel when they dream of “Food, Glorious Food”. After pulling the short straw to have to ask for more, Oliver escapes in search of someone who will love him, “Where is Love?”. He meets the Artful Dodger who offers his lodgings “Consider Yourself” and explores the new, busy world around him “Who Will Buy?”. Finally Oliver is introduced to Nancy who leads the pub regulars in a rousing chorus of “Oom-Pah-Pah”. Nancy eventually meets a cruel fate at the hand of Sykes while Oliver, by chance, is reunited with his long lost uncle.

Later, in the manager’s office, notes appear from the Phantom demanding that Christine replaces Carlotta. Firmin and André assure the furious Carlotta that she will remain the star while the other fear for the consequences.

Addaperle decides Dorothy’s best chance of returning home is to follow the Yellow Brick Road to the Emerald City, to see the great and powerful Wizard of Oz, or “The Wiz” for short “He’s the Wizard”. As Dorothy embarks on her journey she makes new friends, meeting Scarecrow, Tin-man and Cowardly Lion ‘Ease on Down the Road’.

There they battle evil witches, and finally get to meet the all-powerful and mysterious Wiz. ‘Brand New Day’.

Deloris joins the other nuns for dinner and after several comedic interactions with the overly perky Sister Mary Patrick, Deloris discovers how the other nuns got their “calling” from the Lord.

Aladdin MUSIC: ALAN MENKEN, LYRICS: HOWARD ASHMAN/TIM RICE Far in the middle-eastern city of Agrabah, “Arabian Nights”, Aladdin, a young street boy, spends his days stealing food and aggravating the locals “One Jump Ahead”. Aladdin is smitten after meeting Princess Jasmine, who is disguised as a commoner to get outside the palace walls. After a trip to the cave of wonders, Aladdin finds himself winning 3 wishes from a Genie. With his first wish Aladdin disguises himself as Prince Ali, hoping to be approved prince worthy for Jasmine “Prince Ali”. Once at the palace, Aladdin courts Jasmine with a ride on his magic carpet provided to him by Genie “A Whole New World”.

Come From Away MUSIC AND LYRICS BY IRENE SANKOFF AND DAVID HEIN Come from Away is based on the true events in the week following the 9/11 attacks on America, when 38 planes, 7,000 passengers, were ordered to land in the small Canadian town of Gander. On the morning of September 11, 2001, the townsfolk of Gander describe life in Newfoundland “Welcome to the Rock”. Together they welcome the passengers “On The Edge/Heave Away / Screech In” and one trailblazing pilot, Beverley Bass, comments on how her once optimistic view of the world has suddenly changed “Me and the Sky”. Once allowed to fly again, all joyously exchange stories of the immense kindness and generosity that was shown to them by the Newfoundland strangers in their time of need “Somewhere in the Middle of Nowhere”.

The Will Rogers Follies - Our Favourite Son MUSIC BY CY COLEMAN, LYRICS BY BETTY COMDEN AND ADOLPH GREEN The curtain rises on Will Rogers, a Follies-style tribute to the man whose daily newspaper column sent America on its way each morning with a smile on its face. As America’s most beloved star, Rogers is approached about running for President in the 1928 election. He decides to run as the candidate of the DeBunk Party, and joins another unforgettable Tommy Tune production number.

Anything Goes MUSIC AND LYRICS BY COLE PORTER “Anything Goes” is set mostly on a luxury liner sailing from America to England, and the excited passengers are wished “Bon Voyage!”. After Billy meets Reno Sweeney, the rather unlikely-sounding evangelist turned nightclub entertainer, the ship is alive with new romances - “Easy to Love” and “You’re the Top”. The whole ship is taken in with ‘Blow, Gabriel, Blow’, a full-out gospel number in which Reno entreats her fellow passengers to give up their sins and be ready when Gabriel blows his horn to join him in heaven. ‘Now since I have seen the light, I’m good by day and I’m good by night.’

In the 1960s, four scrappy young men from New Jersey -- Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Nick Massi and Tommy DeVito have the magic sound that propels them from singing under streetlights to singing in spotlights. With songs like “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry” and “Walk Like a Man” , the quartet finds itself at the top of the charts. However, personal and professional problems threaten to tear the group apart.

SHERMAN, ADDITIONAL SONGS BY GEORGE STILES AND ANTHONY DREWE At the heart of Edwardian London, in Cherry Tree Lane, the Banks family struggle to cope with the stresses of life and children. After many failed Nanny attempts, the children decide to write the advertisement for a new nanny, “The Perfect Nanny”. Within moments Mary Poppins arrives, restored advertisement in hand, and takes charge of the Bank’s children, having every confidence in her own qualifications and merit “Practically Perfect”. Since graduating James has gone on to perform in various musicals in the West End and Tours including: Pepper in Mamma Mia! (Novello Theatre); ensemble/understudy Galileo in We Will Rock You (Dominion Theatre and international arena tour); Riff in West Side Story (Cork Opera House); Joe Vegas in Fame – the Musical (Irish tour) and Woof in Hair – the Musical (European tour).

In recent years James has explored other parts of the industry and has travelled the world with various Vocal groups performing in Hawaii, Canada, South Africa, China, India and many more.

Most recently James was performing in the National Tour of ‘Jersey Boys’ playing the role of Joe Pesci and covering the lead role of Frankie Valli.

Kelly Knight Kelly began her training at BIGLITTLE and Murilova Ballet School, and at 17 started her professional dance training at Bird College in Sidcup where she gained a Dada Award for the 3-year Diploma course. Kelly continued her training at London Studio Centre where she achieved a BA Hons degree in Theatre Dance. Kelly has performed in shows including playing the part of Franz in The Nutcracker (Ballet Russe), Moby Dick the Musical (Pleasance Theatre) and Dance Overture( Hackney Empire).

She has also modelled and danced in hair shows for Trevor Sorbie and Scissors, as well as working with acclaimed choreographers for events and conferences in London. As a teacher Kelly worked as part of the dance department at The Brit School in Croydon.

Nick Hayes

Nick is currently playing lead role Adam/Felicia in ‘Priscilla Queen of the desert’ on tour in the U.K. until November 2021.

Ex-students of Kelly’s have gone on to perform with the Rambert Dance Company, Richard Alston, Zoonation, as well as dancing for recording artists such as Beyonce, Ed Sheeran and the novelty dance act Twist and Pulse. Kelly has choreographed and staged many dance pieces and her work has been performed at central London venues such as the Shaw Theatre, Greenwich Theatre, and the Bonnie Bird Theatre at Laban. Since relocating to Dorset to raise her family, Kelly has performed as a professional dance partner for part of Bournemouth's ‘Business Come Dancing’ which was hosted by Pavilion Dance, and recently was invited back to be part of the judging panel.

She has worked on the creative team as a choreographer for shows Broadway Showtunes (Bournemouth Pavilion), 9 to 5 -the Musical (Jellicoe Theatre), Edward Scissorhands (Jellicoe Theatre), and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee - the Musical (Backlight productions).

Jenny Legg Jenny trained at Bird College of Performing Arts, graduating in 2007.

Nigel Richards Nigel is delighted to be Honorary Patron of BIGLITTLE, having spent a career in both performing and teaching Musical Theatre.

He trained at The Guildhall School, where he worked with Leonard Bernstein on the British premiere of The Mass.

This experience inspired him to devote his career to working with new writers as well as student performers.

Consequently, musical premiers include Spend!

(West Yorkshire Playhouse), Floyd in Floyd Collins, Songs for a New World and Hello Again (Bridewell), Neil Gaiman’s The Night Before My Wedding (Latitude), The Stationmaster (Tristan Bates, London), and Baby (National Tour). Abroad, Nigel premiered Charlotte Saloman: Life? Or Theatre? (Hal Prince, Philadelphia) and The Green Violin (Amsterdam).

Jenny has also been lucky enough to teach at colleges and dance schools all over the UK, and enjoys passing on her knowledge and love for performing to young performers learning their craft.

Nigel has had a varied career, from opera (Handel, Mozart and Kurt Weill), theatre (Ibsen and Ayckbourn) via operating theatre (Holby City), to touring with Tom Waits in Black Rider around the world.

Over sixty productions later, Nigel is now shifting predominantly to teaching and producing.

His first feature film as Executive Producer, Finding Clive, starts filming in October starring Shirley Henderson (known for playing Moaning Myrtle), with whom he trained at Guildhall, with another two films slated for next year.

He continues to sing when asked, and he will be following his 2009 album, A Shining Truth, with a new album of theatre songs called Short Stories.

Nigel is also patron of the Northern Musical Theatre Orchestra and Creative Director of Shaftesbury Avenue Ltd and film company, FOS.

Workshops include: Julia in Balance, A New Musical (East 15), Joy/Martha in Ferguson’s Gang (RADA Studios), Turning 30 (Mountview Studios) As a writer, Lydia has written book & lyrics for Arthur’s Quest (which received 6 MTN award nominations at the Edinburgh Fringe) and most recently Hatched! (a new audio musical to be released on Spotify/Apple Music this summer).

Carmen Sutter Carmen trained at BIGLITTLE Theatre School for almost ten years, including two years as part of the Professional Development Programme, and has just graduated from the Italia Conti Arts Centre with a degree in Musical Theatre. Roles whilst training include the Baker’s Wife in Into The Woods, Ensemble and Understudy Brooke Wyndham in Legally Blonde and Ensemble/Vocal Captain and Understudy Conchita Alvarez in Copacabana. Alongside her skills as a musical theatre performer, Carmen is also a talented pianist. Carmen thoroughly enjoys working the Youth Theatre company every week.

Sam Taylor-Martin Sam trained at The Italia Conti Academy. As a Musical Director: Legend Trippers (The Other Palace, Assistant), The House of Edgar (Edinburgh Fringe), The Producers (Northcott Theatre) Tom wrote the book, music and lyrics for The House of Edgar (MusicalTalk’s Pick of the Fringe, shortlisted for the Brighton Fringe Award). His original song The Starry Night was featured in as part of Sit In The Stalls’ New Year, New Songs, New Writers series. He has also composed music for the short film Kindling (REMI Award Winner) and the documentary series Age of Fear (Amazon Prime).

BIGLITTLE students have pointed out that Tom bears a resemblance to the chef from Ratatouille!

Neill Brinkworth LIGHTING DESIGNER Neill trained in Visual Performance and Theatre at Dartington College of Arts. He was nominated for the Off West End Award for Best Lighting Design in 2013 and 2015. He has worked in a wide variety of theatre, dance and opera productions across the UK and Europe.

In the theatre his Musical Director credits include Lend Me A Tenor - The Musical (Gielgud Theatre, London), Peter Pan, A Christmas Carol and The 101 Dalmatians (Chichester Festival Theatre), Wizard of Oz (Leicester Haymarket), Three Men in a Boat (UK tour), The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe (Leicester Haymarket), A Slice of Saturday Night (UK tour), Kaye’s The Word (the Plush Room, San Francisco & UK tour), West Side Story (Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama), Into The Woods (Urdang Academy), The Beggar’s Opera (Cochrane Theatre, London), You’re Gonna Love Tomorrow and Nearly All Sondheim Volume One (Greenwich Playhouse).

Colin has conducted and arranged music for countless recordings, concerts and events nationwide, including for the Russian soprano Marina Laslo at the Barbican, as musical supervisor and arranger for Christmas with the Salvation Army at the Royal Albert Hall and Jon Lee’s debut solo album Fallen Angel. Colin conceived and arranged the critically acclaimed revue A Spoonful Of Sherman with Robert J. Sherman. Earlier this year Colin was delighted to revisit Lend Me A Tenor in a production for the London School Of Musical Theatre, and later this year will be Musical Director and Orchestrator for the Chichester Festival Theatre production of Wizard of Oz

John is the resident Production Manager for BIGLITTLE Theatre School, and he has worked extensively in stage and production management for over 35 years.

Having trained at the New College of Speech and Drama (London), he has worked at the Northcott Theatre (Exeter), Nottingham Playhouse, York Theatre Royal, as well as in the West End at the Duke of York’s, Mermaid, and the Garrick Theatre. UK tours include Triumph Apollo, Bill Kenwright and The Really Useful Company, as well as international tours to France, Belgium, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Middle East, Japan and USA. He was the National Youth Music Theatre’s Production Manager for 8 years, and he was based at the Royal Opera House and Sadler’s Wells Theatre.

This is Nick’s fourth Broadway Showtunes, having joined the sound team back in 2016 as Production Sound Engineer.

John is also the Production Manager at the Arts University Bournemouth for the BA (Hons) Acting Course.

Ian Carter MUSICAL DIRECTOR Ian is pleased to have been associated with BIGLITTLE for many years, as a singing teacher and Musical Director of the Footlight Youth Theatre Company. His musical career has taken him in many different directions; as a teacher of singing, piano, organ and theory; musical director of more shows than he can remember (including some he wishes to forget ); concerts and recitals in France, Belgium, Netherlands, Canada and USA. Also Winchester and Salisbury cathedrals and York Minster, films such as Monk Dawson, and accompanist for many stars including Danny la Rue. He has received the service award from the Royal School of Church Music, the David Palmer award for service to the theatre, and a licentiateship from the London College of Music.

Leah Sams DESIGNER Leah Sams is a Designer, Scenic Artist and Technical Draughtsman for theatre and opera. Recent design credits include The Importance of Being Earnest (Tabard Theatre), Little Women (Mary Shelley Theatre), Broadway Showtunes (Bournemouth Pavilion), Cosi Fan Tutte (Dulwich Opera Company, UK Tour), A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (Bridewell Theatre), Lock Up Your Daughters (Bridewell Theatre), Nabucco (St Andrew’s Church) and Carmen (Dulwich Opera Company, UK tour). Leah is also a graphic designer, recently producing poster artwork for James Horner: A Life in Music, which premiered at the Royal Albert Hall.

He is very excited to be taking on the Sound Designer role for 2019, drawing on over 12 years of professional experience to deliver the high calibre production audiences have come to expect of BIGLITTLE. Nick is currently touring as Head of Sound on the Dirty Dancing (UK & ROI Tour).

Adam Tuffrey MUSICAL DIRECTOR Adam is a versatile Musical Director, performer & arranger, who has performed regularly across theatres in the South of England and at many charity/ Gala events, at venues such as St. James’s Palace and Ronnie Scott’s.

As well as his role as Assistant Musical Director at BIGLITTLE, Adam is the Musical Director at Jamie-Lee Dance Academy and LeAF Academy, and, most recently, was Musical Director for ‘Jack & the Beanstalk’ at the Lighthouse Theatre, Poole (Darren Reeves Productions).

As a composer, he has released several of his own commercial singles, as heard on BBC Radio, and is currently working on an original musical with writing partner (and BIGLITTLE alumni), Alex Moneypenny. Adam was awarded a British Empire Medal on the Queens Birthday Honours List, in 2015, as recognition for his charity work, raising over £50,000 for ‘Meningitis Now’.
