September land use public meeting of the BRVA By Alan Hague

alan@broadripplegazette.com

INDEX

There were about 20 in attendance at the September public meeting of the Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA) Land Use and Development committee. There were four items on the agenda, although only one item required a vote from the committee. A. 6535 Ferguson Street, Amanda Bennington regarding approval on an egress stairwell from the second level of the house to use as an emergency exit in accordance with the fire code. This item was for the Village Montessori School [C4 on map] planning to open the second floor of their structure to students. This will require a second means of escape in event of a fire. The committee voted to support this external staircase plan. B. 930 Broad Ripple Avenue, Keith Keokuk regarding options for food service with outdoor seating, new entry and windows on east side, variance to be applied for. This information-only presentation was for the possibility of adding outdoor tables and chairs along Winthrop Avenue at what used to be Sigman’s Gallery, at the northwest corner of Broad Ripple Avenue and Winthrop [H5 on map]. The Wisconsin sandwich shop Erbert and Gerbert’s plans to open in that location. C. 927/929 E. Westfield Boulevard, John Pantzer, Scott Perkins and Michael Rabinowitch regarding a project update on a new 3-story mixed-use building for retail and office use. This information-only presentation gave the current status of the redesign for the southwest corner of Westfield and Winthrop, including the current La Chinita Poblana and the previous Broad Ripple Steakhouse and New Paradise Cafe [G5 on map]. The new structure would be in line with the current structure. Variances will be filed for right-of-way and parking. There are 11 spots and the zoning code calls for 63. There was a long discussion of the serious nature of requests for support from the BRVA on parking requirement relaxations. One side asked when should new requests be denied, the other side said times are changing and the new generations are driving less. D. 6280 College Avenue, Tiffany Oliver, Harry Reed, Joe Calderon, Jeff Gowdy, and John Sutton regarding the establishment of a Enterprise Rental at this location. This petition had not yet been filed downtown, so no vote could be taken by the committee. This proposal is to open an Enterprise Car Rental location on the top floor of the Broad Ripple parking garage at Westfield and College [H2 on map]. There would be a small office and a car wash area. The rental car parking spots would occupy approximately 20 spaces on the top floor that has around 140 spaces. The next public meeting of the Land Use committee is scheduled for October 25 at 6pm at Northminster Presbyterian Church, 1660 Kessler Boulevard [KK28 on map].

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Assn he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

C I S Poetic Thoughts S A L C

by C.W. Pruitt II

Albert Einstein was once asked, “What is the force driving the Universe?” Einstein said “Love.” Here is a poem about that force:

Another Reality Your psychiatrist is wrong! The time of day does not matter. Neither does the day of the week or The day’s date. Love is all that matters. The moment matters. If you are Still enough you will find Eternity. The birds in the trees matter. We Can be grateful for every bird In every tree-if we choose to. Your friends matter. Your family Matters. Even your enemies matter. Maybe The love we give to the ones we Love the least matters the most. You have been lied to. Love is all that matters. But you can always choose Another Reality. C.W. Pruitt II April 1999

SOLUTIONS SOUGHT FOR LIGHTING UP THE RIPPLE No new street lights have been installed in the city since 1980. Broad Ripple is no exception. Per President Kent Springer of the BRVA: “The BRVA has long advocated to the City for additional street lights in the Village. We believe lighting can solve many public safety issues. It is a great step forward that the Mayor has lifted the moratorium on new street lights; now the City needs to include street lighting in future budgets. When Cornell Avenue was

redesigned, we requested street lights and were refused. We had conduit installed in the hopes that one day we could install lights.” City Councilor Colleen Fanning also weighed in: “Broad Ripple has needed additional street lights for decades. We will continue to advocate for sufficient lighting, as it is one of the key components in preventing and deterring crime.” Local resident and community leader Barbara Wilder recently sent the Mayor a suggestion: let residents donate to add new energy efficient street lights. The Mayor’s staff responded they were open photo by Bill Malcolm Streetlight-less Cornell Avenue to the idea and would investigate. However, there is no need to wait for city action. IPL will sell you a street light. Per Claire Dalton of IPL: “IPL customers, neighborhood associations or businesses may purchase a security light to be installed on their property. They can submit a request online, and an IPL lighting representative will offer a free consultation and discuss pricing. We encourage customers, neighborhood associations or businesses who are interested in purchasing a security light from IPL to reach us at (317)261-

The polls are only open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. In Broad Ripple, Pam Hickman, John Ruckelhaus, and Zach Roberts are running for State Senate in District 30. Incumbent Scott Schneider is not seeking reelection. For Washington Township Board District 1, Andy McSheffrey faces Wanda Roddy. For District 4, Emily Denton, Sara Rossier , and Angela Fisher are seeking the seat. For the At Large set, John Fencl faces Deitric Hall. Also on the ballot are public questions (with my recommendations): • Amending the state constitution for protecting the right to hunt, fish, and harvest wildlife (Vote NO. You already have that right. It doesn’t belong in the Constitution.) • Raising the county income tax .25% for transit (Vote yes. Don’t let perfect be the enemy of the good. The Red Line is expected to be funded by a Federal grant. You are not voting on the Red Line.) • Allowing the Metropolitan School District of Washington Township to impose a new property taxes to maintain academic staff and programs and to issue bonds for renovation work. Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the medium puzzle. We will try to put an 8 in the right section of the top row which contains 2-5-6-7-9. The 8 in the right section of the middle row eliminates the space between the 6-7. The 8 in the right section of the bottom row eliminates the spaces above and below the 9. The only place left is directly to the right of the 9. You have learned one technique needed to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

It’s a Wonder!!! Once upon a time, a local resident began writing a column. She wanted to bring fun tales about her backyard, the birds, garden advice, and memories of growing up in a different time to the good readers of Broad Ripple Village. She wrote and wrote and wrote making every deadline. But this year she got writer’s block. What would page 19 of the Broad Ripple Gazette do if her column was not sent in on time to the editor? She began a month before the deadline. She asked her sister, “What should I write for Vol. 13 No. 21?” Her sister gave her some ideas, but no offer to help. So this writer had to explore more. She talked to an avid reader of the paper, “What should I write for Vol. 13 No. 21?” The reader had only a comment about how he liked to read “Right in Your Own Backyard.” Another reader listed his favorites: the cardinal and the clothes on the line ones. Still no new, fresh ideas. So the writer sat and thought. No inspiration, no thoughts, no words. The weeks passed, and the deadline was getting close. She had thought and thought and thought. Finally the time crunch jarred a long lost memory. The book The Little Engine That Could by Watty Piper sent inspiration her way. So she began to say “I think I can, I think I can. I think I can.” She needed to copy the determination of the little engine that could climb the mountain to take its train load to the good children. This is a true story. I began writing for the Gazette 13 years ago. Alan Hague was in Backyard Birds delivering one of the first issues of the paper, and I asked if he would like a nature column or something about Broad Ripple since I lived in the area most of my life. He invited me to send a couple of articles. I did and I was hired. If Alan had told me I would be writing for the paper for this many years, I don’t know if I would have been able to meet the challenge of this assignment!! Please know that many of you have encouraged me to keep my thoughts bubbling up and putting them on paper. Just like each time I saw one special reader, he would comment on my most recent column. Another man wrote me a note about his days at Starlight Musicals and how he didn’t want them forgotten. A woman told me about how wonderful it was to be able to read something enjoyable while sipping her coffee. I can go on and on; it is your comments that give me steam to say “I think I can, I think I can!” This issue Vol. 13 No. 21 is a cause for a celebration. I began asking what I should write early this month because I had gotten an email from Alan. He contacted me with the news that this column would be my THREE HUNDRETH! That is 300 Right In My Own Backyards have appeared in the Broad Ripple Gazette! In that time I have had only four guest columnists; one was James Whitcomb Riley and his poem about Broad Ripple. Thank you readers. Remember, if you send me comments or ideas, they give me the steam to meet the bimonthly deadlines. Cheers to 300 and “I thought I could, I thought I could!” P.S. Writers are not to overuse !. This column called for lots of !!!!!!!!!! Brandt Carter, artist, herbalist, and naturalist, owns Backyard Birds at 2374 E. 54th Street.
