Four days of celebration coming to Broad Ripple Park - August 11 thru 14 Thursday, August 11 through Sunday, August 14 Broad Ripple Park will be transformed by the Broad Ripple Village Association into a historic glimpse of its amusement park past. Two different amusement parks have occupied Broad Ripple Park over the years. In 1907 the White City Amusement Park (named after the Chicago 1893 Columbian Expo) was built by Dr. Robert C. Light and W.H. Tabb. A year later it burned. It was rebuilt and reopened. That park lasted into the early 1920s. It was during this time that the carousel (now at the Indianapolis Children’s Museum) was installed. This second amusement park had several owners and went through extensive changes to modernize the attractions. It lasted into the 1940s. Each day of the local Indiana Bicentennial celebration includes: Carnival Rides and Food, Craft Beer Garden presented by HiFi, Food Trucks, History Exhibit courtesy of Broad Ripple Gazette, and Community Booths.

An aerial view of the amusement park at Broad Ripple Park taken in 1939. Broad Ripple Avenue is at the bottom. White River is to the left. The parking lot is in the same place today, the middle right. Visible are the roller coaster, dance hall, and famous swimming pool (where Olympic tryouts were held in 1952)

It was a light month for zoning petitions, with only two items on the agenda and about 15 in attendance. The July 26 public meeting of the Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA) Land Use and Development committee was held at Northminster Presbyterian Church. The agenda (in bold): A. 834 E. 64th St., Sangrita regarding enclosure of the patio deck. This agenda item was for information only as no variance is required. Sangrita Saloon, 834 E. 64th Street, [D4 on map], plans to install a “smart pergola” over the existing 24-seat outdoor deck. This roof moves with the sun and rain and has fans underneath. Vinyl shades on the sides with an outdoor furnace would heat the space in the cooler months. B. 6539 Carrollton Avenue regarding improvements to the building for office, light retail, or art gallery, single tenant use. Variance required before applying for construction permit. This variance is for improvements to 6539 Carrollton Avenue. Plans are to add on to the building, but keeping under the 50% improvement limit imposed by the flood plain regulations. Clapboard siding will bring the exterior to a more traditional look. It is currently zoned D4 (residential). No variance is required for parking. The committee decided to take an electronic vote once the official filed petition has been received. The next scheduled meeting is August 23, 6pm, at Northminster Presbyterian.

Hello gang! There is so much to do in this two weeks that I’m not sure when I’ll sleep…or work, for that matter. Don’t forget that the Indiana State Fair is happening now and it is chock full of music and fun. Here’s a sampling of other great things to do.

Broad Ripple Carnival Celebrating Indiana’s Bicentennial August 11 – 14 Broad Ripple Park 1550 Broad Ripple Ave all-ages, free, Thursday & Friday 4 – 9 pm, Saturday noon – 9 pm, Sunday 11 am – 4 pm I’m sure we’ve all seen the wonderful photographs from the 1900s depicting Broad Ripple Park as an amusement park complete with a roller coaster, log ride, bumper cars, beach, petting zoo, and carnival games. The history of Broad Ripple and the Indiana Bicentennial will be celebrated with a four-day festival in the park, featuring carnival rides and games, food and drink, a craft beer garden, live entertainment and community booths. Sunday will feature an artisan and vintage market. The days are jam packed with yoga, pet adoption, storytelling, and much more. Here is a peek at a bit of the music: Friday: 6:30 pm, The Funk Quarter. Saturday: 6:00 pm, Steve Kennan. 7:30 pm, Chad Mills

Saffire-The Uppity Blues Women: Revisited Sunday, August 14 Jazz Kitchen 5377 N College Ave 21+, 7 – 10 pm, $20

Oh my goodness, this show will be an absolute blast! I can’t remember when it was that I saw Saffire – The Uppity Blues Women play at the Music Mill – 2008ish, maybe? I am forever grateful to Maureen Cox for suggesting that I go. The band is great fun and made up of very talented women. The Uppity Blues Women retired in 2009 and we were lucky that band member, Andra Faye, landed in Indianapolis. Their fans have been clamoring for a reunion show, but they have declined, especially after the death of piano player, Ann Radson. The band was coaxed into playing the Cincinnati Blues Festival this year and added Indianapolis to the tiny reunion tour. Yay, us! Gaye Adegbalola (vocals, guitar) and Andra Faye (vocals, bass, mandolin, violin, guitar) will be joined by Cheryl Renee, a talented singer and pianist from Cincinnati, who I hear has just the right amount of sass to handle the mix of classic, slightly-naughty, and original blues songs the band is known for. Scott Ballantine and Andra Faye will play a short opening set.

The festival features lovely beer from Sun King brewery and delicious sausage from Kincaid’s Meat Market. Other local vendors provide deserts, food offerings, and wine. Activities for young guests include inflatables things to bounce on, games, cake walks, and face painting. New this year: a back lot party featuring School of Rock musicians for the teens. Don’t worry parents, chaperons will be provided. Music lineup: Friday, August 19 5:45 Fabulous SausageKings 6:30 Scarlet Water 7:30 Turnipseeds 8:30 Midtown Mad Men 9:45 Streaker

The background of The Gazette:

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Assn he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

State Fair may open sans train

As reported last issue, the State Fair may have no train this year. My sources tell me that the operator of the train, the Indiana Transportation Museum (ITM), is working closely with the Hoosier Heritage Port Authority (HHPA) with the goal of running the Fair Train this year. Unfortunately, no final decision has been made by the HHPA.

Here are some B&W images your editor took of the old iron Westfield Bridge over the White River in 1976, just before its demolition. In the image above you can get a feel for the tight curve right at the entrance to the bridge. This was a dangerous bridge. To the right you can see the iron plaque still in place before the fearless foursome (see issue Vol 13 #15) wrestled it down and saved it from destruction. Below is your editor on the bridge. These are my high school days at BRHS and you might be able to make out the ever-sostylish HP calculator case on my belt. Yes, I wore it all the time, not just during school!

The Wine Scene

Where in the "Village"?

This one is harder. It is out in public, but a little out of the way. Where is it? Answer on page 14

as seen by The Broad of Ripple (Jill A. Ditmire)

Pop Tab:Trend or Friend? Remember when we thought the “stelvin” or screw cap was just a fad? How about wine in a box? Wine drinkers were appalled. What about the POP of the cork? How could a wine that you unscrew or tap possibly taste good? It might be time to re think wine-in-a-can. I was and still am a big fan of both screw cap and box wines. The packaging protects from possible cork taint and makes serving simple. Same with the slimmer, portable wine containers. Since my first sip of wine in a tetra pak (Three Thieves) and wine in a can (Sofia Blanc de Blanc by Coppola Wines) I found them smart, eco friendly, safer (no glass to break) ways to take wine with you on a picnic, a boat, or pool side. And most importantly, they TASTED like wine from a bottle. The latest can wine sensation comes from Seven Daughters. It is one of many brands owned by Terlato Wines, which does business with wineries and producers from all over the world. The Seven Daughters Moscato is from the Veneto region of Italy and the Pinot Noir from California. The lined can keeps juice fresh and each holds the equivalent of two 4 oz glasses. Still not convinced? Give these a try: Underwood - Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris from Oregon, Barefoot REFRESH Spritzers - slightly sweet white and red blends; Sofia Blanc de BlancSparkling wine anytime.

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put a 1 in the right section of the middle row which contains 3-5-7-9. The 1 in the upper right section eliminates the space between the 5-9. The 1 in the left section of the middle row eliminates the spaces on both sides of the 9. The 1 in the center section eliminates the space to the left of the 5. The only place left is directly below the 3. You have learned one technique needed to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

Gettin’ Ripped in Ripple

Good LORD this summer has been bloody hot already (as my darling English trainer, Rosie, would put it). And sadly for me, and likely several of you, which means a lot more sweating…and even worse: a lot more bug bites. I am cursed as one of those people who get devoured by bugs (mostly mosquitoes, but not only) while my friends and family seem untouched. The thought of going to an outdoor evening concert or an event makes me anxious just typing this, as I know, without adequate planning, I would be uncomfortably swatting away while my company looks at me like I am being over dramatic. But, ah yes. It is a fact that about 20% of us get bitten more than others. Yep, I am one of the lucky 1 in 5. That BITES! So WHY do these little boogers prefer to dine on my already incredibly sensitive skin more than the next guy? There are several reasons, and go figure, I fit most of them. Read along to see how many of these factors define you. 1. Breathing: Bugs locate their target by smelling the carbon dioxide emitted in their breath. Therefore, people who exhale more gas (found to be either larger people or frequent exercisers) have been shown to attract more mosquitoes. CHECK! 2. Exercise and Metabolism: Victims are also found by the smell of the lactic acid in sweat and higher body temperatures. Strenuous exercise increases the buildup of lactic acid and heat in the body, which will make one stand out to the insects. CHECK! 3. Pregnancy: The increase in bites for pregnant women is likely the result of increased carbon dioxide and body temperature. NOPE! 4. Clothing Color: Dark and bright colors stand out to the mosquitoes. Note to self: wear dull looking clothing when outside! 5. Cholesterol: People who are more efficient at processing cholesterol (which comes out through the skin) are more likely to be prey. CHECK! 6. Movement: Mosquitoes are also more attracted to someone moving rather than one at rest due to the changes in waves of light around them. CHECK! Wow, after seeing this list I might as well be the poster child for a buggy feast! Looks like exercise is the perfect recipe for disaster in regard to getting bites due to heat, CO2, lactic acid and movement. BUT don’t let that be your excuse… I don’t know about you, but I am heading out now to get some really good bug spray and some white workout clothes.

Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter Hurray for Hostas Shade gardening can be a challenge to some gardeners but in my yard, sun gardening my puzzle. Because my yard is dominated with 75-year-old trees, a few sunny plots are hard to find. I had to become quite adept at landscaping with shade plants that grow easily in Indiana. I don’t go in for exotics or unusual plants. I just like the tried-and-true varieties that can winter over and multiply in my yard. I am a hosta lover, not a connoisseur. The plants are more often lush and range from chartreuse (yellow-green) to green to deep blue green. The leaves can be tiny or gigantic. They usually multiply and grow in a rosette or circular form. What I particularly like about hostas is that they are hardy and impenetrable to destruction. Other than my dogs and a few slugs, the leaves cover fairly large areas and discourage weeds. I began with just a few varieties. (When a hosta comes to my yard it loses its botanical and common name!). In spite of my lack of identification, I enjoy sharing and receiving plants. They are almost impossible to kill and can be transplanted anytime of the year. My first ones were brought from our old house. We decided to border a stone fence that was almost a half-of-a-block long. It took us almost seven years to do this. We planted the first season, let the hostas multiply, dug and separated the next spring, and planted again. These border hostas are our showy color in August. I have painted my landscape with variegated ones, hostas with purple flowers, and ones with white flowers that are usually fragrant. What is wonderful about this plant is that you can move them, adjusting their height, bloom, color of leaves, and growing formation to design an elegant display in your yard. There are a few other plants I have added to my shade garden. For Spring blooms: wild flowers, bleeding hearts, and spring bulbs. The daffodils and narcissus have enough light before the hosta leaves get too big and photo by Brandt Carter shade the ground. Lenten This was not a staged photo: Wrigley in my garden! Roses or Hellaboras have been fantastic additions. Their dark, dark green leathery leaves are a wonderful contrast to the hostas. The Lenten Rose begins blooming in late January to midMarch (coinciding with Lent; thus, the name) and hold its white, greenish white, purple, or pink blooms into June. After several years, I also was surprised how they multiply and spread thus saving a frugal gardener the need to buy more. I have also encouraged Forget-Me-Nots to spread along with Dames Rockets, early blooming Money Plant, and ferns. A few daylilies a set in a sunny spot. All my plantings are low maintenance and easy growing. Have a hosta party with neighbors and friends. Exchange varieties and enjoy new plants. I can’t keep track of all my varieties, but I can remember who gave me the plants and the yards they left to become a resident of mine. Just one final thought: If you become a hosta fan, check out the Indianapolis Hosta Society, www.indianapolishostasociety.org. It offers education, sales, trips, and tours.
