BRHS Open House
last look at our school
While many attendees (your editor included) forgot to sign in at the May 17 open house, over 1500 attendees did sign in! This open house allowed grads and friends to walk through the halls of BRHS for the last time before it closes after this school year.
The 2018 Fair landscape changed. Now the Park 66 Flats can be seen to the south east of Artist Field in Opti Park.
Broad Ripple Art Fair 2018
There was some rain, but most of the fair saw sunny skies and the grounds of the Indianapolis Art Center were filled will art, food, and music lovers.
Rahmon Olugunna, “Osogbo Price of Art”, from Evanston, Illinois, offered many bright, graphic paintings. Open house attendees got to see the old girl’s gym where they used to have Phys Ed. This space is currently the band room.
Grads enjoyed looking through the many old yearbooks to see pictures of themselves and their friends.
INDEX
Friends and families gathered to celebrate the school for the last time. Your editor’s best friend from BRHS, David Dawson (class of 78), traveled from Cincinnati for the open house. Above, three siblings: Christine Carlson (class of 66), Phyllis Carlson Schwitzer (class of 64), and Gary S. Carlson (class of 69).
Many local restaurants were at the Fair, including Shalimar, which has been a Broad Ripple favorite for over 20 years.
On Saturday, School of Rock Carmel performed on the Great Lawn Stage.

Editions Limited-Frame Designs: Celebrating 50 years in business!
The story of Editions Limited-Frame Designs begins 50 years ago in June of 1968. That summer John and Barbara Mallon opened a frame shop called Wonderlin Galleries, at the corner of 49th and Pennsylvania in the heart of Indianapolis’s Meridian Kessler neighborhood. Along with his partner Ron Mikulla, John began a business venture that would last for half a century. The business grew and developed over time into what would become a cornerstone of the Indianapolis picture framing, fine art and corporate art consulting market. John bought out his partner in the 1980’s. In 1970, the name of the business was changed to Frame Designs. In 1974, the business expanded and opened a new division called, Framemakers. Framemakers was “Do-It-Yourself” framing, which was a very popular trend throughout the seventies and early eighties. Framemakers was the first store of it’s kind in Indiana. The first Framemakers store was opened at 506 S. Rangline Rd. in Carmel, IN. The store still stands in the same building today, under the name Editions Ltd-Frame Designs. John and Barbara would eventually have 5 Framemakers stores throughout the state of Indiana. During the mid 1980’s, the business moved to downtown Indianapolis and opened a fine art gallery and focused on art and corporate art consulting. “The Gallery” started in the Merchants Bank building and eventually moved to Massachusetts Ave to join the early downtown art scene. During this same time, John and Barbara purchased Editions Limited Gallery, which was Indiana’s oldest contemporary art gallery, founded in 1969. In the 1990s John and Barbara’s children came into the company in various roles, as did a few other key employees who all remain with the company today. For many years Editions Limited was at 838 E. 65th Street in Broad Ripple. Throughout the 1990’s and 2000’s the business has continued to thrive and adapt to the changing retail environment. As things go, the “Do-It-Yourself” trend went out of style and the Framemakers division closed. The business now is streamlined to focus on fine art, custom framing and residential and corporate art consulting. Editions Ltd-Frame Designs is still operating out of the same Carmel location where they have been for 44 years. In the 50 years in business, the company has been privileged to serve many wonderful clients and interior designers, to add art to amazing projects both residential and corporate and to work with many, many incredible artists. Editions Ltd-Frame Designs hopes to serve the art and design community for many years to come! Stay tuned for a future new location. The company will be having an Anniversary Framing Sale the week of June 18-23rd. Custom framing will be 40% off, and there will be a selection of ready-made frames and huge markdowns on artwork too!

All are welcome to play bocce at the courts in Lacy Park, or learn how to play the historic Italian game. The Lacy Park Bocce Courts are located at McCarty and Greer Street at the south end of the Church. Those interested in signing up a team of four to play in the IHSI League should register at www.italianheritage.org. Additionally, there is a 7:00 pm mass on Saturday, June 9th at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Before Mass at 6:45 p.m., a colorful, Italian religious procession, with a Blessed Virgin statue, along with priests, servers and members of the Italian Heritage Society will move through the middle of the food booths.

The background of The Gazette:
I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Happy Decoration Day! It’s time to dust off the white shoes and launch into summer. There are gobs of great things to do this time of year - ignore the yard work one evening and enjoy the neighborhood. Of course, I may be a little too good at ignoring the lawn mower...
The Jazz Kitchen Patio Mondays - Thursdays 5377 N. College Avenue - 21+, free, times vary
Another sure sign of summer is that the music is flowing on The Jazz Kitchen patio. Mondays: Jazz JAM Session. You can bring your own horn to join the jam or to listen. 7 - 10 pm, burger and beer specials. Tuesdays: New Orleans Nights with The Red Hot Whiskey Sippers and a Louisiana Shrimp Boil. Music starts at 6:00 Wednesdays: Andra Faye and Scott Ballantine will kick off the rotation on May 23. Tim Brickley Troubadour will take over the patio on May 30. The rotation continues from there. Thursdays: Bembe Latin Band performs from 6:30 - 9:30. There will also be food and cocktail specials.

Comfort Jam 2018 Saturday, June 9 The American Legion Post #34 - Robert Kennington Post 2210 E. 54th Street - all ages, noon - 7 pm, $5
All of the money collected at the door will go directly to The America Legion’s Operation Comfort Warriors for comfort items, experiences, or assistance towards the recovery of veterans. I’m sure there will also be plenty of other ways to donate money throughout the day. The music lineup is great and includes: Jus’ta Band, Andra Faye & Scott Ballantine, 3:1, The Raven Brothers, By Chance Band, John Barney and The Passengers, El Rusho, and Naptown Revue.
Uncle Dan and Sophie Jam - The Music of Cole Porter Tuesday, June 12 The Jazz Kitchen 5377 N. College Avenue - 21+, doors 5, show 6 - 8, $25
The duo of writer Dan Wakefield and saxophonist Sophie Faught make up the Uncle Dan and Sophie Jam. They take the audience on a creative journey with Dan and Sophie though stories and music. This installment will include special guest Cathy Day, an author who is currently writing a novel on the great Indiana composer, Cole Porter. As always, Sophie and her band will perform great jazz standards and a musical nod to Cole Porter. “Uncle” Dan will do his masterful job of interviewing Cathy and telling stories connecting his vast experiences to many Hoosier greats.

-Nora Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time. Poetic Thoughts
by C.W. Pruitt II
Editor’s note: Here is a bit of CW’s past, from a 2005 Gazette.
-Alan
Our culture bombards us with material distractions which often interfere with us obtaining the highest levels of Love. This poem is a plea for finding what is truly important: Relations and Revelations accordion book by Teddy Lepley
Sage to Student You are young and undisciplined. You are easily distracted by what your senses find pleasing. Therefore follow me. The example I give will allow you the same divine connection that I have. Observe how I die. The beauty and perfection of my sacrifice will be an undying source of inspiration. C.W. The controversial IndyGo Red Line Bus Rapid Transit $75M Small Starts grant was received from the Feds so construction can begin on the line which will run from 66th Street south to downtown and beyond. While construction is anticipated to begin within the next 45 days, IndyGo will start on the southern portion of the route. Per Bryan Luellen of IndyGo: “We don’t have solid dates yet. Working with the contractor on specific timeline—all of that will come out as soon as we have a groundbreaking date set. Best guess at this point is early next year.” Meanwhile, no need to wait. The #17 and #18 IndyGo routes already run downtown from the Ripple several times an hour. Fare is just $1.75. The Broad Ripple Park outdoor pool opens June 2 (sadly after Memorial Day). The pool will unfortunately close on August 5. This year’s hours for the pool will be: Sat. 12-5P, Sun. 12-5P, Mon. Closed, Tues. 11A-6P, Wed. 11A-6P, Thurs. 11A-6P, Fri. 11A-5P. They also offer swim lessons and will host a swim team. For details go to www.indy.gov/parks. Special events include: June 8 – Water Safety Day from 11 to 11:30 a.m. Stay for the water safety lesson and swim for free the rest of the day. June 30 – Pack the Parks 12 to 5 p.m. with special programming and activities. As I have previously noted, the future of the outdoor pool is in jeopardy. IndyParks is considering shuttering the current outdoor pool with photo by Bill Malcolm implementation of its new master plan for the park. (Yes an indoor pool or a splash park are being considered. But the current outdoor pool would be closed and another outdoor pool is not in any of the planning. While it is not final, the writing is on the wall.) Send your feedback to IndyParks if, like me, you think this is the wrong way to go. There are too few outdoor pools in our city as it is. Many city children get their lessons at the current pool. Yes, it may need repairs and it is a hassle to find life guards, but this is no solution. For details and to give feedback on this matter, go to www.broadrippleparkmasterplan. com and be sure and email them if you have a view on your vision for the Park.

Relocation of the Glendale Library—share your vision
Unlike IndyParks, the Library has no public comment process for selection of a new location for the Glendale Branch Library. However, they told me you can email your comments to Library CEO Jackie Nytes (jnytes@indypl.org) or Board President Joann Sanders (jmsanders@msn.com). I suggest you tell them to move the Library back to the Broad Ripple Village to make it a local, pedestrian friendly experience rather than their “COSTCO” model which requires driving and a lot of parking. Don’t Drink and Bike—IMPD checkpoints catch DUI bicyclists and drivers in the Ripple A reader asked me to follow up on the new sobriety check points being held week end nights in the Village. Apparently, both drivers and bicyclists were pulled over and arrested on a recent weekend night by IMPD. The check point was at the Flanner and Buchanan parking lot across from Weaver’s. Drivers and bicyclists were checked for sobriety. Some bicyclists were apparently arrested and their bicycles confiscated according to one reader. IMPD’s Captain Fredrick S. Ilnicki issued the following statement in response: “Check points are not always in the same place. They are decided upon depending on crash data and complaint data. Any checkpoint that occurs is predicated with a media release before the checkpoint occurs. That is the standard the courts have ruled upon to make them legal. Bicycles are considered vehicles and therefore fall under the DUI laws as well. The term “sting” implies, to me, that officers are going out of their way to find something to lock people up on. Our officers are only enforcing the laws on the books, as they would for any other neighborhood within the county.” So don’t drink and drive (or bike ride) in the Ripple. I hope to hear from any bicyclists who were arrested. Does the .08 standard apply? Was your bike returned?
Get out of the Ripple-Toronto
Toronto makes a great weekend. The city of almost 4 million rivals New York City. The most diverse (and inclusive) city in the world offers much to do – Ripley’s Aquarium, a ferry out to the Toronto Island for a swim in Lake Ontario, shopping (your dollar is worth $1.28 against the Loonie), and more. The new train to the airport takes just 25 minutes and costs $7. You won’t need a car thanks to the great transit and walkability of the city. Try the Ramada Plaza or Comfort Inn – or save even more by renting a summer dorm room from Ryerson University or the University of Toronto. Lunch at the historic St. Lawrence Market is a must. Try the juice bar downstairs or a smoked meat sandwich “Montreal style”. Read my full column at www.windycitytimes.com (see Features, see Travel).

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put a 7 in the right section of the middle row that contains 2-3. The 7s in the right section of the bottom and top rows eliminate the 6 spaces in the right 2/3rd of the section, leaving the space between the 2-3 as the only place for the 7. You have learned one technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

I bought my first little black dress in 1992. I needed something to wear to my high school class reunion and the capped sleeve Ann Taylor sheath was the answer. Its simple classic design could be dressed up with jewelry or worn with a suit jacket for work. It was comfortable yet confident, qualities I was still working on in my life so I justified the cost to my frugal budget as an investment on many levels. It paid off as I still have that dress and STILL wear it when I’m in need of that “just right” look. The LBD or Little Black Dress rose wine from California does the same. It’s simple yet classic but costs MUCH less than the real dress. Its pale pink shimmer makes it eye catching in the glass and soft flavors of pink grapefruit make it a refreshing easy drinker. The screw cap keeps it comfortable but the crisp dry finish means you can confidently serve it with anything from sushi to grilled salmon to vegan cheese and gluten free crackers. Off the rack and in the rack–the Little Black Dress is still a smart choice. Jill A. The Life of The Party Adventures in Entertaining

Sexy Summer Salads! Summer is a great time to serve a variety of fresh produce. It’s everywhere: in our gardens, at the grocery and farmers markets. While we often think of salads as a side, there are many great recipes that can make salad the main course. I’ll share two recipes today. The first is an easy spinach salad that I love to serve on a hot summer night. The second is a favorite that I originally published on my blog. It’s so fresh and bright that it deserves a repeat. Enjoy!
Alice’s Spinach Salad 3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar 6 tablespoons of canola oil 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon catsup 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 1/2 teaspoon sugar black pepper, to taste 1 package of fresh spinach 1 red onion, sliced 1 container fresh mushrooms, cleaned & sliced one can of mandarin oranges, drained 4 hard boiled eggs, chopped 4 slices cooked bacon, crumbled Directions: Combine vinegar, oil, salt, catsup, lemon juice, sugar and pepper in a mason jar with a lid firmly in place. Shake well to combine. Add spinach, onion, mushroom, eggs, bacon & oranges to a large salad bowl. Pour well-shaken dressing over the salad and gently toss to coat. Serve immediately. Pro Tip: Serve with slices of buttered artisanal bread for a complete meal!
Roasted Beet Salad with Orange Vinaigrette 6 beets 5 ounces baby arugula 3 ounces fresh goat cheese 1/3 cup toasted pepitas (pumpkin seeds) Dressing: 1 tablespoon olive oil juice and zest of one orange 2 teaspoon grain mustard 1 tablespoon honey 2 tablespoon apple cider vinegar salt & black pepper, to taste Directions: Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Trim the long stringy part of the root and the greens from your beets. Leave about an inch of stem on each. Wrap each beet in aluminum foil and place on a baking sheet. On the middle rack of your oven, leave them to bake for an hour. While the beets are roasting, Combine all ingredients for the dressing in a jar with a tight-fitting lid. Shake well to combine. Remove beets from the oven and allow them to cool, still wrapped in foil. When they can safely be handled, unwrap one at a time. Grab the stem with a paper towel in one hand and using a second paper towel, gently wipe away the skin. It should easily slide off. When you have “skinned” all six, slice them in 1/4 inch rounds. To assemble the salad, choose a large bowl and arrange sliced beets on top of baby arugula. Crumble the goat cheese and sprinkle on the beets. Top with the pepitas and drizzle the dressing over all. Pro Tips: 1. Roasted beets will keep in the fridge for a week. 2. The dressing used in this recipe can also be used as a marinade for white fish or salmon. The Sertoma Club of Broad Ripple Announces Winners of the 2017-2018 National Heritage Essay Contest The Sertoma Club of Broad Ripple has sponsored the National Heritage Essay Contest for 37 years. The contest is open to sixth grade students in public, private and parochial schools in the Greater Indianapolis area. The topic students were asked to address in their essays was “What Freedom Means to Me.” Sertoma believes that participation in the National Heritage Essay Contest encourages students to better understand the founding principles of our country and to consider how those principles affect their lives today. This year, 18 schools totaling 81 classrooms submitted essays, with over 2000 essays written. From these essays, 27 finalists were identified for consideration as one of the three Grand Prize winners. The students, parents, relatives, teachers and principals attended a special luncheon hosted by the Sertoma Club of Broad Ripple during which the Grand Prize winners were presented with plaques, copies of the Constitution and The Bill of Rights, as well as monetary awards. The three Grand Prize winners selected were: First Place – ($375) Isabella Wilburn, The Orchard School, parents Dr. Victoria and Sgt. Chris Wilburn, Teacher Mr. Justin Burris. Second Place –($250) Sean Loub, Clay Middle School, parents Carolyn and Paul Loub, Teacher Ms. Kristie Meyers. Third Place – ($200) Anna Williams, Riverside Intermediate School, parents Christina and Major Richard Williams, Teacher Ms. Brie Toste.
