Entrepreneur Ali Hessaraki owns EZ Software Solutions, L.L.C., located at 5948 N. College Avenue. He recently went off-line to describe his company’s business model. “I got started in the business when a friend of mine, Gino Pizzi, who owns Ambrosia restaurant, had his computer system crash one Friday evening. He called me for assistance and I helped him out. Programming is easy but building the knowledge base for a particular industry is hard. We came out with our first version of restaurant Point of Sale (POS) software in 2002. First, we worked with Ambrosia, then Midtown Grill and Red Room. Now we are in 32 states with offices in North Carolina, Davenport, Iowa and San Diego, but our home office is here. We have a point of sale for hospitality, fine dining, fast food, over the counter and drive through restaurants. We also have a product specifically designed for retail that would be perfect in a butcher shop, flower shop, grocery or clothing store. EZ Dine and EZ Retail are trademarks. You can’t copyright the product, but you can EZ Software Solutions 5948 N. College Ave. [KK23 on map] trademark the name,” he noted. “The Point Of Sale determines what (877) 853-1263 happens from the time a customer arrives at a business until they leave – and then www.ezsoftwaresolutions.com handles the accounting afterwards. It makes the server or cashier’s job easier to take an order at a bar, table or counter, it notifies the production staff what to make, and it receives the customers’ payments. All of this information is put together, simplified and it makes everyone’s job easier. It automates many of the business processes, like time sheet management, reservations and inventory control,” Hessaraki explained. His company began operating in a modest office space, but has continually grown and

recently relocated to the Broad Ripple area. “We moved into our new building about 10 months ago (to 5948 N. College Avenue) and built a garage in the back. When I started the business in 2001, my first office was in Carmel with 300 square feet. We later moved to the Riviera Building and expanded from 800 square feet to 1,500 square feet where we had the entire first floor. After that, I bought a building off 46th and Keystone Avenue. We operated from that location for years, and fortunately it’s a property which I still own.” EZ Software Solutions is among many small and growing companies in the Broad Ripple Area. “We currently staff 21 full-time and two part-time employees. They work in the areas of sales, marketing, programming, and technical and office support,” Hessaraki said.

His life story is an inspiring one. “I immigrated to America in 1979 from Tehran, Iran and earned an undergraduate degree in computer science at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis (IUPUI). I taught computer science there for 19 years. Well-known IUPUI economics professor Mohamed Kaviani is a long-time friend. In 1984, I earned my master’s degree from Ball State University in computer programming. One of the most rewarding things about the business is having my two sons, Amir and Ali, Jr., work with me. One runs the EZ Retail side of the business and the other runs the EZ Dine side. In business, I’ve had to take many risks, but they have paid off with countless rewards,” he reflected. When Hessaraki was starting out, COBOL (Common Ordinary Business Operating Language) and FORTRAN (F) were widely-used programming languages. As the field of computer science has expanded into numerous new languages for countless new applications today; C# (Sharp) and Swift have become more common. He emphasized that once a person knows the basics, other programming languages can be much easier to learn. To learn more about how your company can benefit from EZ Software’s point of sales solutions, call 1 (877) 853-1263 or access their website at www.ezsoftwaresolutions.com. If you’re dining or patronizing a retail establishment this holiday season, Ali Hessaraki and his staff may power your business transactions easily and from their new home office in Broad Ripple.

Jordan Ellenberg - How Not to Be Wrong: The Power of Mathematical Thinking Tuesday, December 5, 7:30 PM - Schrott Center for the Arts The math we learn in school can seem like a dull set of rules, laid down by the ancients and not to be questioned. In this talk, Jordan Ellenberg shows us how wrong this view is: Math touches everything we do, allowing us to see the hidden structures beneath the messy and chaotic surface of our daily lives. It’s a science of not being wrong, worked out through centuries of hard work and argument. Drawing from history as well as the latest theoretical developments, Ellenberg demonstrates that profound mathematical ideas are present whenever we reason, from the commonplace to the cosmic. And, he shows how to use this knowledge in our lives, whether you’re a business looking to discover the power of big data, a corporate audience out to improve logic and understanding within your organization, or a college crowd with an appetite for the latest research by one of America’s rising scholarly stars.

The background of The Gazette:

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Town with Nora Spitznogle Happy December and all of the celebrations the month brings – Hanukkah, Winter Solstice, Christmas, Boxing Day, and New Years Eve. No matter how you celebrate there is plenty of music and merriment to be found. Cheers!

The Leisure Kings Saturday, December 2 The Jazz Kitchen 5377 N. College Ave - 21+, doors 5 pm, shows 7:30 & 10 pm, $15-35

Before you read further, stop and buy tickets to this show, as it’s sure to sell out. If you don’t love it, swing into the Red Key after the show – I’m waitressing that night — and I’ll buy you a drink. If you love it, feel free to pop in also. Billed as the “R Rated” Big Band Show, the evening promises to be jinglejam packed with laughs and music. The talented duo behind the comedy and songwriting is Mike Wiltrout and Sean Baker. They have been playing together since 2002 and continue to surprise their followers with their clever lyrics and special effects. Underneath the merriment are two very talented musicians. Enjoy an evening of merriment and good cheer!

This sounds like an amazing evening of beautiful music. Hooshir (“Shir” in hebrew means song) is Indiana University’s premier a-capella group. The students are from different walks of campus life - music, business, education, and geoscience are just a few of the many degrees being pursued by the talented men and women of Hooshir. Hooshir performs a mix of Jewish music, secular Israeli and American pop music, and standards. Their repertoire ranges from current pop artists such as Lady Gaga and Beyonce to popular Israeli artists.

First, let us celebrate the four glorious years that this independent periodical shop was open! Jenneane and Benjamin Blevins are closing the retail space to pursue their creative studio projects full time. I can’t wait to see what this creative, community-minded couple does next. They are celebrating with pie, punch, people, and periodicals and releasing an uber-limited broadsheet to mark the occasion.

-Nora Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. Buy a Christmas tree, wreath, or poinsettia. ISBVI is at 7725 N. College, follow the signs to the NE side of the property. If you can’t make this event, Weavers Nursery (1316 Broad Ripple Avenue) and Johnny’s on College Avenue next to the Fresh Thyme Farmers Market have trees, including Fraser Firs – my favorite.

Have you seen this colorful storage building? Where is it?

Answer on page 14

Random Ripplings It is about time....now that all of the construction equipment is gone and the street is clear, there is NO PARKING on the east side of Cornell Avenue north of 64th Street. Just my humble opinion but... shouldn’t this have happened months ago while they were building Just Pop In and destroying traffic to and from the area businesses?

Clue: E equals Z Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s learn another, more complex, two-step, way to solve. On the medium puzzle, we see that the 1 in the left section of the middle row would eliminate the three spaces in the row between the 8-7 and the 2-6. This means the 1 will eventually go in one of the two spaces between the 8-7 or the 2-6. We can use this eventual 1 placement to eliminate the spaces above the 7 in the middle section of the top row. The 1 in the right section of the top row eliminates the three spaces at the top of the middle section of the top row. The 1 in the middle section of the bottom row eliminates the spaces above the 8 in the middle section of the top row. This only leaves the space above the 3 for the 1 in the middle section of the top row! You have learned another technique needed to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

The winery just surpassed 200 thousand gallons of wine produced in a calendar year and capped its one millionth bottle, that’s a LOT of juice! Easley wines are sold in Indiana and 8 other US states. To keep up with demand the winery added a brand new state of the art Italian bottling line. One of the bottles being capped and labeled on it is “No Opposition Cabernet Sauvignon”. It’s a bold, dry smooth red wine that tastes great with anything from burgers to burritos.

Science meets Art : Culinary Conversations The theme was the” Science of Fermentation” and guests at the Da Vinci Pursuit fall fundraiser a few weeks ago sipped, sampled and learned more about that process in beer, wine and food. One of the four conversationalists was Broad Ripple Brew Pub brewer Jonathon Mullens. He talked about creating new English style ales for BRBP and sampled a deliciously tart and tangy sour beer. The wines were Italian but widely available and enjoyed by all. Folonari Chianti - smooth, dry red wine with notes of black cherry and raspberry, made from fermented juice of the Sangiovese grape. Folonari Pinot Grigio - crisp, refreshing dry white wine with notes of green apple and lemongrass made from the fermented juice of pinot grigio grapes. The Life of The Party Adventures in Entertaining

by Elizabeth Morse

Holiday Entertaining. Stay Classy. It’s easy to feel the pressure of the holiday season. The latest promos are stacked attractively to catch your eye everywhere you go. Your inbox is flooded with promo codes. Should you send Christmas cards or Seasons Greetings? Include EVERYONE at the office to your cocktail party? And how about food, what should you serve? You want to be trendy. You want to be in the now. You WANT that bottle of Pumpkin Spice Moscato but you know it’s probably wrong. Secretly, you’re over “hip” and you just want great food and drink, and well, an awesome vibe. You want your guests to leave relaxed, thinking that your event was a welcome and refreshing oasis of holiday bliss. Well, folks. I’m here to let you in on a little something. The classics are ALWAYS going to be cool. Here’s how to have smooth sailing this tinsel time: You see, good choices never go out of style and that said, it’s time to talk about the upcoming season and what excellent entertaining selections look like. And by selections, I really mean three things: the style of the event and the food and libations that you plan to serve. During the holidays, you can’t go wrong by choosing sparkling wines. Fizz is festive, great food wine, fits any budget and runs the gamut from dry to sweet. For the most part, bubbles also don’t stain carpet. You’ll find one paired with each of the parties mentioned. Category 1- The Open House First things first. Set the mood for your event with a fun invitation. I’m a proponent of paper, but Evite.com has some clever (free) options and you can track RSVPs quickly. You won’t need tons of food/wine options for folks to enjoy themselves. A huge platter of colorful cut-out cookies (stars, trees, Santas, etc.), a super-fresh and varied selection of fruits and vegetables with both sweet and savory dips (*Tip: lemon yogurt is a great fruit dip) and a chaffing pan full of spicy meatballs. I love making little “stations” around the house to spread out snacks. For instance, cookies and a stack of napkins in the living room with meatballs closer to the kitchen. You get the idea. It prevents clogs of people and helps migration and conversation. As far as beverages go, offer a few non-alcoholic options and just one festive bubbly! A value-driven option when you need decent wine and lots of it, is a fine way to go. I’m loving a fun Italian varietal called Duvello (that’s the grape, like Prosecco) and the specific wine I’ll suggest is Palladiano Durello Spumante Brut. This wine has been served in the bars of Veneto for years. Just a good, solid sparkler. Bright fruit with loads of Granny Smith apple flavor tempered by a bit of honey. Delish. About $8.99 per bottle. Finally, make sure you’ve got your play list filled with up-beat holiday tunes. Think Brenda Lee & Ertha Kitt. Turn on the tunes, put the pets in a bedroom and turn the porch light on. Category 2- The Dinner Party Typically one is hosting these events for besties. Frankly, if you’re going to have dinner with folks you don’t adore, why go crazy cleaning your house and cooking for them. Right? I mean, if you don’t love them–go out. If they’ve made it to the inner circle and they’re coming to a dinner party at your house, pull out the stops. Create an impressive menu that can be prepared largely in advance so that you can enjoy time with friends. Personally invite friends with a phone call or card. I think an Evite here is a little tacky. Again, set the tone for your event. When guests arrive, have a nice piece of Mycella Blue Cheese and ginger snaps out to snack on. For dinner serve: green salads with cashews, pear slices & dried cherries (made ahead and set in the fridge). The main meal could be a beautiful truffle-honey roast chicken & root veggies (email me for these recipes). It’s one pan, beautiful and delicious. For dessert, bourbon brownies served with ice cream. One of my all-time favorite wines is Laurent-Perrier Cuvée Rosé. A French classic with a stunning deep salmon color. Strawberry, raspberry & cherry flavors. If you really feel fancy, there’s a site online that will cover your bottle in mad amounts of glitter–any color. Tah-dah! Now you have a center-piece for your table. Just google the name of the wine and the glitter site will pop up. You’re welcome. Worth the $80ish price tag. Offer coffee with dessert and don’t forget your tunes. Category 3- The Big Family To-Do If you are hosting the big gathering, then you can organize the meal. This can be a little dicey in some families, but it’s your house. Here’s how I’d proceed: make a list of who’s coming and how many people need to be fed. Identify what needs to be made (turkey, ham, three savory sides, four pies, Aunt Sally’s special marshmallow salad) and make a LIST ON PAPER. Next, call or send everyone an email and ask them to please bring whatever you have assigned to them. Keep the correspondence light, never bossy, just pointing out that nobody wants to have 5 green bean casseroles and no scalloped corn. You shouldn’t feel like you need to make every single thing (unless you want to–then be sure to spread the word!) but there needs to be a semblance of order. Chaos ruins big events. As the host you should provide the main course and the beverages. In this category, I’d go with J Vineyards Cuveé 20 Brut for the meal. A traditional blend of Champagne grapes (Chardonnay, Pinot Noir & Pinot Meunier) from California. There’s a little apple in this one too, but I love the citrus and pear flavors and the delicious yeasty smell. Around $34.99 This is a little expensive, but at family events, do you really want everyone indulging? I vote for offering a nice glass at dinner to toast the family. One and done! *I almost forgot! A note about kiddos: It is so nice to grab a bottle of sparkling white grape juice to include youngsters. It really makes them feel grown-up and you may be surprised at how they rise to the occasion. I’m also always a click away and happy to help you with your entertaining quandaries. Would like a recipe mentioned here? Shoot me an email at elizabeth@broadripplegazette.com and I’ll respond.
