Broad Ripple Park Carousel turns 100 - Children’s Museum treasure

It was way back in 1917 when the Carousel, now at the Children’s Museum, 30th and Meridian Street, was installed at the White City Amusement Park (named after the gleaming white buildings in an area of the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair: Columbian Exhibition called The White City). The amusement park was built on the present-day site of Broad Ripple Park on the bend of the White River to give Indianapolis residents a reason to ride the street car all the way north to the Town of Broad Ripple. The carousel was built by the Dentzel Carousel Company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, consisting of 42 carved animals (17 Jumpers, 14 Standing, 11 Menagerie, 2 Chariots). The ride remained in the park through the early 1950’s, but fell into disrepair, destroying the rotating mechanism and musical organ. Around 1956 the Indianapolis Parks Department moved the pieces to storage. Over the next years horses sometimes appeared at special

events, such as on the Circle. The Children’s Museum acquired the animals in 1965 from the parks department. The museum director at the time was Mildred Compton, who had recently attended a carousel convention and decided to restore the Broad Ripple carousel for the museum. All but one of the original animals were recovered. Over the next 10 years a period rotating mechanism and organ were located and all of the animals were restored. The ride was installed in the soon to open 30th and Meridian museum building in 1975 (previously the museum was in the Parry Mansion at 3010 N. Meridian Street). In 1987 the carousel was declared a National Historic Landmark. The old carousel has been offering rides to young and old at the museum since 1976– currently 430,000 per year!

Take the Survey on Broad Ripple High School Reuse

The Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA) is in the process of gathering community input regarding the use of the Broad Ripple High School site if the IPS Board decides to close the school. In June, Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) announced its recommendation to close various area high schools, including Broad Ripple Magnet High School for the Arts and Humanities. The IPS board will hold a final vote on September 18. A community input session was conducted on August 25th at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Those unable to attend the session may take the online survey at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ BRHSUse1 The survey must be completed by September 12. The BRVA’s objective is to maximize the opportunity for the community to have its desires realized by identifying its desires and effectively advocating on the community’s behalf. Output from the survey will ultimately be used as criteria to IPS and potential site developers. Updates maybe be found online at www.brva.org/brhsadvocacy BRVA Board Member and Past President Kent Springer says the online survey is part of the organization’s mission to advance the Village community through engagement and advocacy. “It is imperative that the community be able to shape the facility’s re-use,” said Springer. “And while the BRVA strongly believes BRHS should remain scholastic and community-service-minded, we want to make sure all voices in the community are heard.”

The background of The Gazette:

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Buzzing Around Town with Nora Spitznogle Labor Day Street Fair Monday, September 4 The Jazz Kitchen sidewalk 5577 N. College Ave - all-ages, free, 2:30 – 8 pm

I cannot believe that this is the 21st year for the Labor Street Fair neighborhood party – I counted back on my fingers and it’s true. I was working at CATH Inc at the time and set up kiddo games – I think I still have the duck pond supplies in my basement – and sold iced tea and sodas. I love that the tradition has continued. The corner of 54th and College looked different then. CATH was across 54th street from the Jazz Kitchen, where Fresh Market is now. Atlas Supermarket was open on the northeast corner of the same property. Brooke’s Army Navy Supply was on the northwest corner and the Broad Ripple Pie Company next to them. There will be food and beverages available for purchase from Yat’s and The Jazz Kitchen. There will be limited seating, so feel free to bring a lawn chair. The musical lineup is: Clifford Ratliff & Friends | 2:30-4p Pavel and Direct Contact | 4:30-6p Rob Dixon and Friends | 6:30-8p I’ll see you there!

French Market Saturday, September 9 Saint Joan of Arc Church 4217 Central Ave - all-ages, free, noon – 10 pm

Speaking of long-running neighborhood festivals, this will be 27th year for the French Market. Saint Joan of Arc’s fundraiser started as a Sunday afternoon picnic in a parishioner’s back yard. Now the day-long event includes music, artisans, children’s activities, and of course, delicious food and wine (and beer). Don’t forget to purchase a raffle ticket or four. Prizes include cash, a scooter, a quilt, an iPad, and Colts tickets. The funds raised from the French Market are used for maintenance and upkeep of the school and gorgeous built-in 1929 church. You can take a formal tour of the historic church led by historian and parishioner William Selm at 1:30, 2:30, and 3:30. Mass will be celebrated in French by Father Michael Hoyt at 4:30. I will be there all day with our Second Helpings students who are getting some real-life training working in a small kitchen and preparing classic French dishes. Be sure and thank them when you see them. The musical line up is: The Julia Kahn Band |noon – 2:00 Midtown Mad Men | 2:15-4:15 French Axe | 4:30 – 6:30 Toy Factory | 7 – 10

-Nora Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. Road upgrades needed?

R HE IP

With all the new development, some readers have wondered if our roads are sufficient to handle all the new residents. Indeed, I am hearing the White’s Ace Hardware Store area (in Nora) and the Smoke Shop land near Weaver’s Garden Shop may both be being considered for new apartment developments in addition to the new apartments by the Art Center, across from the Brugge Brasserie and the old pool supply building. Some readers have asked if it will get worse with all the new apartments (Broad Ripple Avenue has slowed to a crawl ever since the bike lanes were installed). Westfield Boulevard and Broad Ripple Avenue are congested night and day already. Plus many of the roads appear in poor shape or have drainage issues. However, this summer the City is already fixing our roads – as in 64th and 65th Street between College and Westfield as well as Westfield itself.

51st Art Fair Set for September 9

The Penrod Society will be holding its annual art fair at the Indianapolis Museum of Art on September 9. Interestingly, the IMA does not run the event. Instead, the Penrod Society does. I ran into them at the Farmers’ Market. They have an interesting history: In 1967 a group of twenty two men formed The Penrod Society. The volunteer organization was designed to support the cultural and educational activities of Indianapolis-area artists, students, and arts organizations. “Penrod” pays homage to Penrod Schoefield, a literary character from Indianapolis novelist Booth Tarkington. Over forty years later, The Penrod Arts Fair has become an Indianapolis tradition. Each year over 20,000 fair patrons visit the campus of the Indianapolis Museum of Art on the first Saturday after Labor Day. The Penrod Arts Fair showcases hundreds of artists, and offers live music, performing arts and local cuisine. Proceeds from this oneday celebration provide grants for Indianapolis-area arts and community organizations. In addition to launching the Arts Fair, The Penrod Society was also instrumental in creating the Economic Club of Indianapolis and the Prelude Awards. (Source Penrod.org website) All proceeds go to community non-profits doing art (which includes 30 different organizations). The event will be held rain or shine. Also, a preview event will be held on September 8. Find more details at penrod.org

BR Carnival a hit despite Fair overlap

The recent Broad Ripple Carnival held in Broad Ripple Park was a hit with over 9,000 attendees. They may hold it again next year.

Most Accurate Broad Ripple Business Directory

Sep 1 - Sep 14, 2017

I asked why it was run concurrent with the State Fair. Apparently this did not affect attendance and was the time when the carnival rides were available. Plus the Carnival was free. Still wouldn’t a non-State Fair weekend make more sense? Thanks to the Gazette for the great historical exhibit of the Village.

Last word on (killing off of) the State Fair Train Tracks

Proponents of continuing the train to the State Fair from Noblesville protested at the State Fair on Saturday August 19 which failed to run for the second year in a row and will never run again. Noblesville and Fishers have apparently decided to rip out the train tracks that and make them a bike and hike trail instead. The tracks go from Noblesville all the way to 22nd Street in downtown Indy and the corridor for them runs to 10th Street—hence a potential commuter rail, passenger rail, or special rail events corridor. (In a perfect world, the train to Chicago could start in Noblesville or Fishers.) The tracks run parallel to the Monon Trail, something advocates urged as an alternative plan for the aforementioned suburbs to no avail. You can read the details of Save the Nickel Plate on Facebook.

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put an 5 in the right section of the top row that contains 2-4-6-8. The 5 in the middle section of the top row eliminates the spaces on both sides of the 4. The 5 in the left section of the top row eliminates the space between the 2-8. The 5 in the right section of the middle row eliminates the spaces below the 8. The only place left is to the left of the 6. You have learned one technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

I watched the partial eclipse from a Broad Ripple garden wearing my protective glasses from a California winery. The marketing savvy folks at Gallo sent them a month before the solar event as part of the roll out of the latest vintage of one of its popular Apothic brand wines, Apothic Dark. Smart. The glasses. The gimmick. And the wine. It’s bold and juicy with notes of blueberry, mulberry and a tasty touch of mocha. Under 10 bucks and widely available. My fellow nature lovers and I didn’t let a few clouds rain on our partial eclipse event, though we DID get rained on moments after it ended. Nor are we afraid of the dark as we look forward to 2024 when Indianapolis will be in the path of totality. No need to age the Apothic Dark that long though. Drink it now. Another new Apothic label is Crush. This one offers up red fruit–cherry, current and raspberry with a touch of vanilla in a long silky finish.

TOP TASTES

Hundreds of California wine fans partied with a purpose on August 20th. The evening of wine, food and music raised money for the Gennesaret Clinics which offer free medical and dental services to thousands of Marion county men, women and children experiencing homelessness. I poured 5 wines at my table, all fresh and affordable, and from the crowds response, very good. They included the lush Whitehall Lane Merlot, the bold Marietta Cellars Old Vine Red Lot 66, the spicy dry Gundlach Bundschu Gewurztraminer and two easy drinkers from Fess Parker Winery, its Pinot Noir and off dry Riesling. Broad Ripple’s Cork+Cracker took orders and gave back a percentage of sales to the non profit.

Vol. 14 No. 18

Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter It’s About Time “Time is free, but it’s priceless, you can’t own it, but you can use it. You can’t keep it, but you can spend it. Once you’ve lost it you can never get it back.” – Harvey McKay This time of year finds me contemplating how time flies. Annually, I say, “Where did the summer go!” And then, that kicks me into thinking about past summers and the future thoughts of “Christmas is only 3 months away!” In retail, we are opening shipments of boxes of feeders, nature gifts, and books that we hope will help customers while they shop for Christmas. “The bad news is time flies. The good news is you’re the pilot.” – Michael Althusuler But back to time−can time really go slow or fast? I know clocks can, but time…that is a notion that is very subjective. When I was attending PS66, I thought vacations would never come. As a child, waiting for Christmas tried my patience and curiosity. Summers seemed to go on forever. I loved camp, the reading club at the library, playing canasta on the porch hunkered down under blanket-tents to avoid the rain, acting out our favorite TV or movie themes, and playing hours of kickball until the fireflies danced so brightly–encouraging us to wind down the day’s activities. Dad would fire up the truck, we’d climb in the bed, and off we would go for a moonlight cooloff drive. Summers were magical. They were packed full of family and friends. Thankfully they seemed to last forever because some sixty years later, they are still vivid. Research says that when we remember time as long, we record more of the experience. “Idleness makes hours pass slowly and years swiftly. Activity makes the hours short and the years long.” – Cesare Pavese So why does time seem to go faster nowadays and speed up even more each year? In our minds we know that time doesn’t change, so researchers have studied this phenomenon. They compared older adults and college students; the subjects all felt time passing faster in their lives during the study compared to when they were younger. Researchers suggest that the notion of time speeding up begins in your late twenties. Their hypothesis is that as we age, we practice patterns and routines. It takes us less time to run through the routines. It’s as if our treadmill is speeding up. Also they have a term “forward telescoping” which is when we think that past events have happened more recently than they actually did. Often we try to recall events like marriages, deaths, and births. Asked when an event took place, I may say just a couple of years ago, but, in reality it could be ten or fifteen years ago. Time has slipped by! I do know that how I perceive time depends on my emotions, my ability to attend, the fun factor, my health, and my internal tempo clock. I look at a clock often, check my phone or computer for the time or ask the person next to me if they have a watch. Time is important and deserves to be contemplated. Take the time now as the seasons change or as you are celebrating a birthday or life event to enjoy the present. Think about time and how you spend it. It is probably one of the most valuable things you have. Think about time and how as a business you may waste your employees or customers resource. Think about your time and how you cannot reclaim those moments you have ignored. Celebrate that we have this time where we can uplift those around us and make activities in the seconds, connections in the minutes, stories in the months, and memories in the years. “Tempus fugit.” (Virgil - Time flies!)
