Meet the Creator

Liz Roth Hello! My name is Liz Roth, and I’m an artist. I am currently a student studying graphic design and illustration. I created this zine to give artists like me a place to discover, create, and express themselves. I like to write, draw, read, and collaborate with people. I’d like to eventually take this magazine and make other volumes, but we’ll see! Everyone included and mentioned in this zine has been personally interviewed by me, or sourced, which was my entire goal. If you have any questions, make sure to email me at @elizabethlroth!

SELF CARE AND ART BLOCK Written by Liz Roth Artwork by @afrogdite on Instagram Art block is a period of time when an artist cannot access their creativity and/or they cannot bring themselves to create a new piece of work. They feel like they have run out of things to draw. This can become a large issue, and a result, can lead to a lack of self-care. Self care is the practice of taking action to preserve or improve one's own health. I got the chance to speak with an instagram artist named Milena (@afrogdite) about this issue in the art community.

How do you practice self-care as an artist?

"As an artist I try and educate myself as much as possible on a lot of things, I do things like absorbing information and your surroundings and recording them (I keep a journal). having an inner library of all these awesome things really influences your health and creativity".

How do you deal with art block?

"Usually when you’re art blocked it’s because you’re in the art improvement curve and you’ve started to notice flaws in your art that you want to improve. a you feel stuck because you don’t know how to improve and nothing feels right anymore. My strategy is usually trying something completely new, use colors you never use, or go find some inspiration and remind yourself why you started drawing".

Lots of small businesses have recently been popping

media. Because of this, some people have decided to ditch large-company shopping, and instead, shop small. I got the chance to

of

the

owners

Lovedose candles, which is a small shop, on

Amanda explained that they both wanted to find a new hobby together while living in New

York,

Four Questions With Amanda Hemminger of Lovedose candles

How did you begin your small business?

"My best friend, and business partner, Nicole Kapper (@nicolekapper) and I planted the seeds for Love Dose in November of 2019. We were living together in New York at the time and wanted to take on a new craft, a fresh art skill. We bought a $15 candle starter pack and begin experimenting with wax. Our relationship with wax grew over the next few months and we eventually started making organic candles in locally sourced vintage containers. We created a website and Instagram for our candle business as a hobby, that eventually grew into our jobs. We put sustainability, organic ingredients, and minimal waste at the forefront of our business ethics because we want to create eccentric products while being kind to the Earth."

How has covid-19 affected your business at all?

"COVID-19 has definitely affected our business. In March of 2020, we both had to move back to our hometowns from New York - financial reasons. Since we no longer live together, creating physical products is way more difficult. We both had to learn to communicate really well on our vision for the business.

Since we are home, we have a lot more space to store products, which is a big contributor to our growth. The space allows us to make more. Along with the added space, we spend all of our time at home and have so much extra energy to put into our business. Since COVID, online shopping has exponentially increased. Our business has gained a lot of exposure due to this shift."

What is your creative process?

"Our creative process is mostly failures, which we think helps "build our company the most. Since we work with dangerous materials such as hot wax and fire, most of our process is trial and error: constantly experimenting. We are always testing new ideas and materials before we market them. We show the mistakes and experiments on our instagram because we want people to know that it's almost entirely impossible to produce something that you like on the first try."

Where do you want to take your small business?

"It's so funny because I don't think that either of us thought we would ever have 5 year plan for the business. As I said before, this started as a hobby so it's still so incredible to us that we have the ability to plan for the future. As of right now, our 5 year plan involves moving back to New York, establishing an office/warehouse space, expand our product offerings, and be able to pay artists (specifically Black and people of color owned small businesses and creatives) to collaborate with us. We want to use our platform to promote and uplift other small companies as well."

I got the chance to interview a smaller artist named Kat Daniel about the creative process of making music.

How do you come up with your music?

Can you take me through the process?

"Well.. for me, usually it's kind of like finding a loved one, if that makes any sense. You can search for it forever and desperately try to find them, but it's just when you stop searching you'll find them.

That's kind of how it is. Sometimes I try to push myself to write something which almost always ends up being really bad.

But anyways, usually when I actually write something it starts out as just maybe two chords on the guitar that catch my ear and from there I just follow the melody that naturally comes out for me. So yeah, writing music is a pretty natural process for me and if I have any advice it is if you're anything like me, don't try to push yourself when writing. Let the music write itself, if that makes sense."

Where do you get your inspiration?

"Mainly Elliott Smith and lots of Radiohead, Syd Matters, and Belle & Sebastian inspiration."

Do you have any advice for anyone starting out in music?

"Just do whatever you want to do. Instead of caring about the name of your band, the cover art for your hypothetical album, etc.. just do it! The best music comes out of having fun and a passion for music. And don't feel pressured to do anything."

2021 Astrology Predictions written by Liz Roth / Quotes by Susan Miller

Astrologer Susan Miller is feeling positive about 2021, and what the stars will bring towards our future.

Susan Miller is an Astrologer who runs a popular website called “Astrology zone”. In a recent Vogue article, she was asked how she felt about 2020, or if she predicted the pandemic. “When I looked up the horoscope for the Spanish Flu pandemic and saw that Jupiter and Pluto were conjunct in 1918, I almost fell off the couch! There was a big outbreak of yellow fever in 1795, and Jupiter and Pluto were also together for that. But I don't want people to think that every time Jupiter and Pluto get together, we're going to have a virus.”

Susan was also questioned about her 2021 predictions for astrology. “I think we’re going to be OK after January 12—by then, Jupiter and Pluto will be further than eight degrees apart. It also happens to be a new moon in Aquarius, which rules all of us. There’s also a grand mutation on December 21, 2020. Every 20 years, Jupiter meets with Saturn; this is very important because it influences the arts, music and entertainment, fashion, the values of the time. Every time they’ve met in the past 200 years, apart from one exception, they’ve met in an Earth sign—this time they're going to meet in Aquarius, which is an air sign. “Another big feature in 2021 is a dispute between Saturn and Uranus about what we should keep in our lives, and what needs to change. The environment is a very big goal to think about and that's good because Uranus can innovate and come up with ways to save the planet. There'll be a lot of innovation, as it will be the blooming of the Age of Aquarius.”

Susan has met with lots of celebrities to discuss astrology as well. “I've met Emma Stone—she didn't want me to read her chart; she wanted me to teach her how astrology works.

Pharrell Williams loves it and has a lot of questions, and Cameron Diaz is lovely. I met Jennifer Aniston at a party and loved her. She's Aquarius and is going to be in the middle of it all in 2021—I should really let her in on that!”
