De Martino

Wines With a True Sense of Place, Purity, and Balance

Founded in 1934, the De Martino family has specialized, for four generations, in creating wines that are a faithful reflection of their origin, coming from selected parcels throughout Chile. Proud to have been the first winery in Chile to put “Carmenere” on the label of a wine back in 1996. De Martino also pioneered working in century-old vineyards in the Itata Valley, incorporating traditional winemaking techniques that set a precedent in the industry.

The fourth generation headed by Marco Antonio and Sebastián De Martino, along with their team, continue the search for exciting terroirs as well as polishing their house style.

Domaines Devillard

Past Pours into the Present, Five Estates, One Exceptional Taste

Brother and sister, Amaury and Aurore Devillard, represent the 5thgeneration of this historical Burgundian family. The Devillard’s roots started in Mercurey in the XIIth century. However, their first estate label –Château de Chamirey – was not bottled until 1934. Beyond Mercurey, the Devillards have domaines in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Givry, Mâcon, and Pouilly-Fuissé. With over fifty percent of their vineyards designated as Premier Cru, and quite a few Grand Crus, the Devillards understand the importance of price to quality ratio; their wines are accessible to everyone.

Wine lovers can taste wines from the five estates run by the Devillard Family: Château de Chamirey, Domaine des Perdrix, Domaine de la Ferté, Domaine de la Garenne, Le Renard.

Year Founded: 1936

Proprietors: Amaury and Aurore Devillard

Winemaker: Carole Briffox

Château de Chamirey – 37 hectares (91 acres) in Mercurey; Domaines de Perdrix – 15 hectares (37 acres) in Nuits-Saint-Georges; Domaine de la Ferté – 5 hectares (12 acres) in Givry; Domaine de la Garenne – 7 hectares (17 acres) in Mâconnais.

Terroir: Each domaine is located in the premier location for the healthiest grapes possible. Most of Burgundy is a combination of Jurassic era limestone and marl, the density of each depends on exact vineyard site and aspect. Climate is variable, at the very least. All wine growing is done sustainably with green harvesting, and Guyot pruning system to control yields. Density of planting is on par with the rest of Burgundy, 10,000 vines per hectare.

Chateau Musar

An Emblem of Perseverance and Human Achievement

In 1930, Gaston Hochar founded Chateau Musar, inspired by Lebanon’s 6,000-year winemaking tradition and his travels in Bordeaux. Gaston’s eldest son, Serge Hochar, became Chateau Musar’s winemaker in 1959, and spent 18 years perfecting the formula for Chateau Musar’s Rouge bottling. Today, Serge’s sons, Gaston and Marc, along with their cousins Ronald and Ralph, continue his legacy and run the day-to-day operations alongside long-time winemaker and viticulturist Tarek Sakr.

Chateau Musar’s vineyards are located in Kefraya and Aana, both in the Bekka Valley, as well as a new site in Mehrine. The winery itself is located in Ghazir, just north of Beirut. All the vineyards benefit from 300 days of sunshine and 39–78 inch of rain per year, and the cooling breezes from the Mediterranean Sea and the 2 mountain ranges (Mt Lebanon and Anti Lebanon). The soil is predominately gravel with a limestone base. Ages of the vines range from 5 years to 130 years of age.

In the 1990’s, deep in the Waihopai Valley, Bryan and Jan Johnson established 180 hectares of estate vineyards on land considered too hard, too dry and too infertile for wine. This pioneering spirit is one of New Zealand’s most successful and Marlborough’s few remaining 100% Kiwi family-owned wineries.

A.A.Badenhorst

Unconventionally “Back to Basics”

A.A. Badenhorst Family Wines, based in the Swartland appellation of South Africa, was established in 2007 by cousins Hein and Adi Badenhorst. They purchased a neglected 60-hectare wine farm on Paarderberg Mountains, aiming to revive traditional winemaking methods. Adi, now the face of the winery, uses only traditional equipment, including a horse plow and old cement tanks for fermentation.

The vineyards, between 40-65 years old, are on granitic soils Paardeberg, Lammershoek, and Lemoenfontein. The unirrigated bushvines face East, North, and South slopes. Adi is a member of the Cape Winemakers Guild and played a key role in the Swartland Revolution and Swartland Independent. The winery, located on a granite outcrop, is acclaimed as a starting point to explore the Swartland region in South Africa.

Year Founded: 2008

Proprietors: (The handsome cousins) Hein and Adi Badenhorst

Winemaker: Adi Badenhorst

Property: 60 ha (148.5 acres) total, 25 ha (62 acres) planted

Terroir: The winery is situated on a granite outcrop within a mountain range, featuring three distinct granitic soils Paardeberg, Lammershoek, and Lemoenfontein. These soils, considered "low potential," are characterized by old age, resulting in modest vine growth compared to other regions. Yields are generally low, averaging 3–4 tons/ha for Chenin Blanc. The vineyard relies on natural water retention in the soils, eliminating the need for irrigation. With an annual rainfall of around 480mm, concentrated in winter months, the weather exhibits a Mediterranean pattern, with cold and wet winters and sudden leaf fall.

Annual Production: 10,000 cases

Broadbent Vinho Verde

“The Flower Wine”

CEO and Founder of Broadbent Selections, Bartholomew Broadbent’s deep roots in Portugal inspired him to create his own range of table wines. His vision was to produce the most reliable and traditional of all Vinho Verdes and to resolve the usual whine that Vinho Verde never tastes like it tastes in Portugal.

The solution was twofold: to partner with a winery that had consistent production, and to ship the wines in refrigerated containers. The latter enable the wine to taste as fresh and spritzy as it would ever taste in Portugal, and since its launch in 2005, Broadbent Vinho Verde has rapidly earned the reputation as one of the finest Vinho Verdes.

Year Founded: 2004

Produced in the premier Vinho Verde area, Barcelos commune, this red and rosé wine exclusively uses red grape varieties. Challenging ripening conditions in the cool, rainy Minho region make red and rosé Vinho Verde rare. Gentle crushing and pressing extract juice, and the rosé must undergo clarification for a clear wine. The Vinho Verde process involves suppressing malolactic fermentation and injecting carbon dioxide at bottling for the characteristic spritz. Tasting notes describe the offdry rosé as fresh and fruity, featuring a light prickle on the tongue, an appealing red-berry fruitiness, and a hint of baked apple at the end.

10-YEAR TAWNY

Hand-harvested and gently crushed after partial destemming, the grapes undergo fermentation in lagares with grape skins, extracting crucial flavor compounds under temperature control. Aguardiente is added at the precise moment to halt fermentation, crucial for Port wine's sweetness. Postfermentation, the wine ages in wood, ultimately becoming a blend of multiple vintages of oak-aged reserve wines, aged between 8 to 15 years. Good depth of color. The best tawnies show some good fruit on the nose. The palate is rich, long and deep. Serve at room temperature or on the rocks. Can be kept open for several months.
