MINERAL SPRING WATER Take a tasting tour of downtown Manitou Springs’ eight naturally-effervescent, cold water drinking springs.

F

or centuries, indigenous Americans passing through the Pikes Peak Region stopped in the valley of the “Medicine” springs to drink and bathe in the water and pay homage to the healing spirits of the mineral springs. The town of Manitou Springs was founded in the early 1870s as a resort for travelers from the east seeking the relief of the healing waters and the dry mountain air. Now there are eight naturally carbonated mineral springs throughout the Manitou Springs Historic District. All bubble up from the karst

aquifer deep under the town, where the water is permeated with natural carbonation as it is forced to the surface. Minerals from the surrounding rock dissolve into the water for distinctive benefits. The cool, refreshing water is available and easily accessible for drinking from unique, artistic fonts. Springs are tested regularly to insure purity. Each spring has a slightly different taste. Enjoy a self-guided tour of the mineral springs. Get sipping cups and maps at the Manitou Springs Visitors Center at 354 Manitou Ave.

STRATTON SPRING

TWIN SPRING

Drilled by the Stratton Foundation during the Depression as a service to the town, this popular spring stands at the intersection of indigenous trails, the historic trolley lines, and the modern highway system.

Twin Spring is the locals’ favorite spring for its sweet taste and for making Manitou Lemonade or Manitou Mojitos. Originally two springs, Twin Spring now has been merged into one font.

CHEYENNE SPRING

NAVAJO SPRING

IRON SPRING

One of the mineral springs once utilized by the Manitou Mineral Water Company’s bottling operations is housed in the round stone spring house nearby. The red-orange Lyons sandstone for the spring house was sourced from nearby Kenmuir Quarry, now Red Rock Canyon Open Space. The mineral water flows from the original basin to a bronze font designed and created by sculptor Paul Rogers.

Navajo Spring was near the Ute Pass Trail and was a rendezvous for indigenous peoples, explorers and early settlers. The font is located on the back outside wall of current-day Patsy’s Candies Store. The candy store was originally a sampling room for the bottling works.

Iron Spring was once the most popular spring in Manitou, when thousands health-seekers traveled up Ruxton Ave. to drink its iron-infused waters. The current spring was drilled in 1910. It was made more popular by adding orange and lemon flavoring.

SHOSHONE SPRING

SEVEN MINUTE SPRING

WHEELER SPRING

A natural spring with the highest levels of many minerals, Shoshone Spring was highly recommended by physicians of the 1800s for its curative uses.

Drilled to beautify the park of the Mansions Hotel in 1909, carbonation caused it to erupt at 7-minute intervals. It was re-drilled in the 1990’s and again in 2014.

Wheeler Spring was donated to the city by the family of Jerome Wheeler, mining and railroad magnate, banker, one-time president of Macy’s department store, and chief promoter/president of the Manitou Mineral Water Company.

LEAVE NO TRACE CARE FOR COLORADO PRINCIPLES WITH A LITTLE PREPARATION, A SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE AND A SOFT SPOT FOR NATURE, YOU’LL BE ON THE TRAIL TO EXPLORING COLORADO LIKE A LOCAL. ■ KNOW BEFORE YOU GO:

■ BE CAREFUL WITH FIRE:

■ STICK TO TRAILS:

■ KEEP WILDLIFE WILD:

Do your research to know what you’ll need. Take a reusable water bottle everywhere

Help natural areas stay natural by staying on the path.

■ LEAVE IT AS YOU FIND IT: Take home the beauty in a photo and not in your backpack.

■ TRASH THE TRASH:

If you pack it in, pack it out — even food scraps and poop! If you come across trash, pick it up.

Keep campfires small, and put them out until you can handle the embers.

No feeding, approaching or touching, no matter how cute they are.

■ SHARE OUR TRAILS

& PARKS: Yield to the uphill bikers and hikers; silence your cell phone and search for the trail less traveled.

Get to know our cover artist

Ken Riesterer

Ken Riesterer is from the Chicago area. He met his wife, Tina, while studying painting at the American Academy of Art. They fell in love, married, and traveled west seeking beauty and inspiration. Finding just that in Manitou Springs, they settled down, painted, and have raised two wonderful children. Somewhere in between that, they branched out into ceramics, and started collaborating in clay. Exhibiting locally and nationally, they both continue to work and grow in paint and clay. You can find him in the studio most days, working with clay, or on the streets or in the hills drawing and painting. Ken and Tina are part of the ownership team at the Green Horse Gallery in Manitou Springs.

Experience the wild grandeur Without enduring the wild grandeur

People say the top of a fourteener is hallowed ground. But it can also be harrowing. 60 MPH wind gusts, temperatures that drop like a stone, and snow that can drift to the heavens. Which are just three reasons Pikes Peak built the all new 38,000 square foot Summit Complex. Here, you can have your donuts and eat them too.
