DESIGN CONCEPT GOAL

ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES

THIS DESIGN WILL BE ONE THAT ATTRACTS MANY GENERATIONAL GROUPS FOR MANY TYPES OF ACTIVITIES THAT BRING THOSE GROUPS TOGETHER. THROUGH THE DESIGN OF A PLAYGROUND, REFUGEES LIVING ON SITE WILL BE ABLE TO USE THE COURTYARD AS THEIR BACKYARD AND ALLOW CHILDREN TO TREAT THE AREA AS SUCH. PRIVATE AS WELL AS MORE GROUP ORIENTED SEATING WILL PROVIDE THE COURTYARD WITH PLACES FOR PARENTS TO WATCH THEIR CHILDREN, A PLACE FOR STUDENTS TO STUDY, AND A POINT OF RELAXATION FOR ALL USERS. A LARGE, GRASSY GATHERING SPACE WILL BE DESIGNED FOR LARGE EVENTS THAT MAY TAKE PLACE WITHIN THE COURTYARD, BUT ALSO SERVES AS A PLACE TO SIT, PLAY, AND RELAX WHEN THOSE EVENTS ARE NOT TAKING PLACE. LARGE GARDEN PLANTERS WILL BE DESIGNED WITHIN THE SPACE WHERE THERE IS MODERATE SUN EXPOSURE FOR COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO PARTAKE IN GARDENING. THROUGHOUT THE DESIGN, RAIN GARDENS WILL BE INCORPORATED AS A WAY TO INFILTRATE AND COLLECT RAINFALL THROUGH THE SITE’S WATER MANAGEMENT SYSTEM. NATIVE PLANTS WILL BE INCORPORATED WITHIN THOSE RAIN GARDENS IN ORDER TO MITIGATE MAINTENANCE AND IRRIGATION. GABION WALLS, BENCHES, PLANTERS, AND OTHER FIXED OBJECTS ON SITE WILL BE MADE OF MATERIALS THAT ARE PREVALENT ON THE ADJACENT BUILDINGS AS WELL AS OTHER MATERIALS FOUND THROUGHOUT THE HISTORIC NEIGHBORHOOD. LASTLY, TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF THE PEOPLE USING THIS SITE, GATE FEATURES WILL BE DESIGNED IN THE BREEZEWAYS SERVING AS ENTRANCES TO THE COURTYARD.

OBJECTIVES DESIGN A SAFE PLAYGROUND AREA FOR CHILDREN AT PLAY OFFER A LARGE GATHERING PLACE FOR PUBLIC AND SOCIAL EVENTS PROVIDE DIVERSE SEATING FOR GATHERING, INTIMATE CONVERSATIONS, AND PLACES FOR PARENTS TO KEEP AN EYE ON CHILDREN AT PLAY INTEGRATE LARGE GARDENING BEDS FOR RESIDENTS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS THAT ENCOURAGE GROUP ACTIVITY INCORPORATE NATIVE, DROUGHT RESISTANT PLANTS THAT ALLOW FOR RAINFALL INFILTRATION AND COLLECTION AS A WAY TO SUPPORT SUSTAINABLE FEATURES ON SITE

INTEGRATE MATERIALS ON SITE THAT SPEAK TO THE ADJACENT BUILDING MATERIALS AS WELL AS THE HISTORICAL CONTEXT WITHIN THE NEIGHBORHOOD

USE MATERIALS IN BUILT FEATURES ON SITE SUCH AS RETAINING WALLS, GABION WALLS, COLUMN WRAPS, ETC.
