HOUSING TRANSFORMATION
PROJECT TYPE: MULTIPURPOSE (HOUSING & COMMUNITY CENTRE)
SITE: KIAMBU NEAR WNDSOR HOTEL, KENYA
SOFTWARE: ARCHICAD, TWINMOTION, PHOTOSHOP
DATE: 2023
MASTERPLAN
SCALE 1:750
The aim of this project is to create an affordable housing scheme for home owners with varied income and fnancial capabilities. The project aims to achieve social integration across income groups in each cluster, while taking into account that some home owners may wish to develop their houses in phases.
The housing cluster should have a different mix of house types ranging from 2-bedroom and 3 bedroom apartments, 3&4 bedroom maisonettes and 3&4 bedroom bungalows. The housing units should be designed to allow for incremental growth / uncertain programmatic expansions into the larger units without losing the overall architectural character of the cluster. The design of the units should as much as possible achieve flexible space thus enhancing space / land sharing.
The community Centre as part of the Housing project is tributary to the themes explored in the housing project viz; Social housing (space sharing), social mix (integration across income groups) and planning for sustainable communities. The Community Centre is expected to serve both residents of the area and residents of neighboring estates.

The overall theme is SUSTAINABLE BUILDING MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES This is achived in several ways including;
*The parking lot area is constructed with gravel which is a permeable paver that allows water to drain to the ground below.
*Reclaimed timber is used for making furniture and floor in the buildings
*Outdoor solar lamps to brighten pathways. This lighting is subtle and does not disturb night animals in the area. This brings guests closer to nature and allows them to witness many animal sightings close to the ecolodge
*Mosquitoes are repelled naturally by; planting plants that repel mosquitoes in the bioswale and placing of birdbaths and feeders to attract birds that eat mosquitoes.
MATERIALS USED
RAMMED EARTH FLATTENED BAMBOO RECLAIMED WOOD
SITE ELEVATION RENDER
*The windows in the main building are located on the N/S direction which helps in minimizing thermal gain
*The water offered in the restaurant is pacaked in reusable glass bottles to reduce the amount of waste caused by plastic. The space also uses papaya stems as straws and bamboo trays
*At night the restaurant uses LED lamps and candles for lighting the space
*Reduced use of paper napkins in favor of hand woven local cloth napkins in the restaurant

Corner streets are a hostspot for people so i designed a pedestrian plaza at the corner where people can meet and have small meetings as they pass by. The site can be accessed from Mchumbi and Kapiti road
The demonstration kitchen is where vendors or visitors can learn how to prepare the fresh vegetables from the garden or goods from the market, for sale from notable local chefs or vendors. It can also function as a culinary classroom for local schoolchildren to learn about good eating practices.
