Learning Support Information for families whose children may need additional Learning Support in order that they can fulfil their potential.
Learning Support Inclusion • The British School of Paris is an educationally inclusive school, where the teaching and learning achievements, attitudes and well-being of every pupil matter. • In the mainstream classroom children receive high quality teaching. Teachers are able to make creative adaptations to classroom practice that enable pupils to learn inclusively and meaningfully alongside their peers. Learning Support Departments • For children who have additional learning needs, a dedicated Learning Support department, which works closely with classroom teachers, exists in both the Junior School and the Senior School. • Both teams are experienced in working with and advising staff about children with a variety of special educational needs, including Asperger’s, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia and ADD. • A number of Learning Support staff hold post-graduate qualifications and regularly attend professional training courses to keep up with new research and current practice in the UK. • The Junior and Senior Schools manage and deliver a range of specialist interventions, which are detailed in our Special Educational Needs & Disability (SEND) Policy and curriculum guides (available on request) and are summarized below. Curriculum Support • Some children have additional learning needs that require extra support and targeted intervention. Therefore, as part of the standard curriculum and available to all pupils, the school offers Curriculum Support.
Learning Support • Curriculum Support consists of classes which allow for consolidation of learning and additional reinforcement of instruction given by subject and class teachers. Curriculum Support is usually offered to small groups and aims to improve the literacy, numeracy and study skills of children up to and including Key Stage 3. At Key Stage 4, pupils can benefit from a Curriculum Support option class to help them better fulfill their potential with GCSE level work. Educational Support • Educational Support is a level of specialist provision delivered by the Learning Support departments and is additional to and/or different from, the standard curriculum. • Types of Educational Support available include: o One-to-One sessions with a specialist teacher, o Support in class from a Teaching Assistant o Individualised learning programmes outside of the mainstream classroom setting. Educational Support is a service that incurs fees which are charged to fee payers in addition to normal school fees. School entrance is always conditional upon a SEN and/or disabled child receiving required additional support.
Learning Support Public Exams and Access Arrangements • The Senior School is a fully accredited exam centre for GCSE and A Level qualifications, and as such, a specialist assessor is available to implement Access Arrangements and Reasonable Adjustments for candidates with disabilities and learning difficulties. Local Support Networks • We are also fortunate in the Paris area to have access to the SPRINT organisation which is an English-speaking Anglo-American network of private medical practitioners, psychiatrists, psychologists and therapists who are available for family or individual consultations if necessary.
