NOTE Welcome to British Polo Day Singapore 2016, presented by RJI Capital. We are delighted to be back once again this year at Singapore Polo Club, one of the oldest sporting and social clubs in Singapore. Set in acres of lush, tropical grounds, the Singapore Polo Club is a world apart from Singapore’s bustling pace yet located just minutes from the heart of the city’s hectic business and commercial centre. The inaugural British Polo Day Singapore in 2011 commemorated the founding of the club 125 years prior in 1886 when the officers of the 1st Battalion, King’s Own Regiment first played here. This year celebrates 130 years since the club was founded and we are delighted to be a part of polo, the ‘Game of Kings’, at such an iconic location. The aim of a British Polo Day is to continue the tradition of playing high quality amateur polo against friends in host countries whilst also acting as a platform for Britain around the world. We are proud to partner with some of the best companies and brands, including RJI Capital, Harrods, Royal Salute, Bentley, British Silverware and Justerini & Brooks. It is an honour to be here once again and we thank Club President Mr. Rickard Hogberg and the Committee for this privilege. The green player has the line, and at fair speed the white player would be crossing the line without a sufficient safety margin, resulting in a penalty against white.

When travelling in the same direction the white player may draw level with green player and then force him across the line and take possession of the ball without committing a dangerous foul.

Two players riding for a ball from opposite directions in the open must both give way to the left and take the ball on their right or offside.

Brompton Bicycle is the largest bike manufacturer in the UK, with its factory in Greenford, West London. Brompton’s history can be traced back to 1975, when the British inventor, Andrew Ritchie, created prototypes of Brompton bikes from his bedroom in South Kensington, London. The Royal Salute British Schools side has been introduced as a nod not only to the best amateur traditions of the sport, but also to the institutions that are renowned and respected around the world. Royal Salute Ambassador and England polo player Malcolm Borwick (6-goals) will captain the Royal Salute British Schools team in their bid to secure the RJI Capital Mountbatten Plate. Since the assembly of the British Schools Polo Team - who in their inaugural match were victorious in obtaining the coveted Charity Cup in Great Britain - the British Schools Polo Team have competed in Russia, China, Australia, USA and Great Britain. BRITISH POLO DAY Vinod Kumar CEO - Tata Communications As a child growing up in Chennai, Vinod knew that he wanted a career in global business. That dream is in full bloom since he works as the CEO of Tata Communications, which operates in more than 100 countries. If he could go back in time, he would add ‘professional polo player’ to his childhood wish list! Vinod started riding and playing polo 4 years ago and is consumed by the sport. Alas, he is nowhere near professional levels, but nevertheless enjoys chasing the white ball around on horseback. Luckily, his global travels have enabled him to play and engage with the polo community in Argentina, England, Sotogrande, Thailand and Malaysia, in addition to his home club in Singapore.
James McBride Managing Partner - Nihiwatu James McBride is a globally known hotelier who has led some of the best hotels in the world during his twenty-five year professional career. James turned hotel entrepreneur in 2012 when long-time friend Chris Burch approached James to partner with him in the acquisition of Nihiwatu on the island of Sumba. The subsequent investment and redevelopment of the resort, with its philanthropic and adventure focus has positioned it as one of the best resorts in the world. The success of this has spawned the birth of Nihi Resorts and the development of Nihioka a sister resort on Sumba with a vision to develop an Island in Komodo connecting all with a classical Indonesian phinisi.
PERSONALITIES Malcolm Borwick Player - British Schools Malcolm started playing Polo aged 10 in the Pony Club, and never looked back. Having been selected for an HPA scholarship aged 14 it soon became clear that a career in polo beckoned. He formed Polo clubs both at Radley College and Durham University leading both clubs to successive victories as a student at these fine establishments. After University he toyed with the idea of getting job in banking, but opted for the tough life as a travelling professional polo player. Now, with over 50 England Caps and having played in over 30 countries as a professional, aside from the stresses of playing top level polo, he works as a Brand Ambassador for Royal Salute Scotch Whisky, Piaget, and La Martina . This is his first British Polo Day match, and maintains it will be the highlight of his yearMalcolm is married to Ale and has 3 children Ines, Jaime and Lucas.
Ebe Sievwright Commentator & Master of Ceremonies Ebe has been playing polo since he was 14 and now plays, teaches and commentates for polo all over the world. Aged 17 he was awarded a Hurlingham Polo Association scholarship and subsequently lived in Argentina for a year learning how to school polo ponies and preparing to play polo professionally. Good sense prevailed and he decided to go to university in Edinburgh, Scotland but he always maintained one foot in the polo world, and now works at the prestigious Guards Polo Club. As a professional, he has played high goal for the Black Bears and Azzura polo teams, winning the Swiss open with Javier and Eduardo Novillo-Astrada, and has played in Queen’s Cup 22 goal matches with Marcos Heguy and Nacho Novillo Astrada.
