NOTE Welcome to British Polo Day Jodhpur 2016, presented by RJI Capital, in association with The Umaid Bhawan Palace. The British Polo Day global platform has seen us celebrating British luxury heritage in some fantastic locations – gala dinners on the Great Wall of China, Pasola spear-throwing on the beaches of Sumba island, and excursions into the Atlas Mountains – just to name a few. All this takes place while also raising money for good causes around the world to leave a legacy far beyond what we thought was possible when we began this adventure. Lord Louis Mountbatten played his first game of polo in Jodhpur when he accompanied Edward, The Prince of Wales, on his 19211922 tour of India and the Far East. Mountbatten had to step in at the last minute to replace an injured player and although he only hit the ball three or four times he wrote in his diary: I’ve gone absolutely dippy about polo, which in my opinion is the best game in the world.” He in turn, taught his nephew, Prince Philip, who taught his son, Prince Charles, who in turn taught Princes William and Harry. This is just one example of the many ways that India and Great Britain have been connected with polo ever since the revival of the sport in the nineteenth century. The seeds of polo in Jodhpur were sown in 1889 when Sir Pratap Singh, younger brother of the Mahara ja and Prime Minister of Jodhpur State, invited Col. Stuart Beatson of the Bengal Lancers to help him raise the Jodhpur Lancers. Polo was played for the first time here and we are delighted to be continuing that tradition with the British Army team once again playing the President’s Bodyguard. Our second match will be The British Exiles vs Mayo College for the covereted Yuvra j Shivra j Singh of Jodhpur Plate and bringing to a close the 6th British Polo Day India will be Jodhpur vs Mundota Fort & Palace, Jaipur. The aim of a British Polo Day is to continue the tradition of playing high quality amateur polo against friends in host countries whilst also acting as a platform for Britain around the world. We are proud to partner with some of the best companies and brands, including RJI Capital, Harrods, Royal Salute, Bentley, British Silverware and Hackett. We do hope you enjoy the day. The British Polo Day Committee

RULES OF PO L O 1

The green player has the line, and at fair speed the white player would be crossing the line without a sufficient safety margin, resulting in a penalty against white.

3

When travelling in the same direction the white player may draw level with green player and then force him across the line and take possession of the ball without committing a dangerous foul.

5

Two players riding for a ball from opposite directions in the open must both give way to the left and take the ball on their right or offside.

2

Even at a far lesser angle the white player would still be crossing the line if he continues in that direction, and committing a dangerous foul.

4

The white player may move in parallel with the line and play a shot providing he can do so without interfering with the green player’s mount or causing him to check back. If white would cross the line to the dotted position it would be a foul.

6

When two players are approaching a ball in the open from different directions, the player (white), with the line of the ball on his offside, right hand side, has right of way.

DELNA POONAWALLA FASHION Delna Poonawalla known for her enchanting and feminine designs elegantly takes on drama with her new couture collection ‘Dark Mistress’. It has a soft, sculptural yet a dramatic look which resonates her signature style. The collection is all about elevating your evening wear to a high fashion status with its chic play of deconstructed duality and sheer overlays. The silhouette of each creation is flattering for all body forms. ‘Dark Mistress’ being a spin of haute couture, has it all from alluring and arresting blood reds, to the seductive cuts wrapped in sensational shades of midnight blue. Almost like a transformation from darkness into light, each and every design oozes style and self-confidence. The collection moves away from demure and focuses on fierce romance. Bold, structured gowns in intense colours dominates the collection ‘Dark Mistress’. Frenchinspired voluminous tassels made from leather, velvet and lace detailing add to the theatrics of each piece, accurately capturing the essence of the theme. The collection is extremely wearable off the ramp as well which can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. Leather accents and colours make it an arresting feature. The line starts with lighter/ edgier pieces like capes, shorts and A-line dresses and progresses to a more royal theme and eye-catching pieces. Delna Poonawalla will be showcasing her collection ‘Dark Mistress’.

CHRISTIAN HOOK ARTIST The paintings of Gibraltarian artist Christian Hook are rooted in tradition, yet brim with freshness and vitality. Winner of several prestigious awards, his interest lies in depicting motion, time and the movements that occur in-between events: “We are always on the move, if not physically, mentally.” Christian’s favourite subjects are the horse and the human figure and the fusion between classical art and abstraction has led him to find a unique way of perceiving his subjects. The past and the present collide in each piece, creating alternating perspectives. Christian was named ‘Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year’ in 2014, which shot him to well-deserved prominence. The tense final, held at The National Portrait Gallery, was the culmination of a ten-month search to find the most talented portrait artist in the UK and Ireland. Christian studied illustration at Middlesex University, London before establishing a career as an illustrator for Disney and later lecturing in illustration at The Royal College of Art. These days his celebrated work hangs permanently in three British museums and is included in numerous important collections including the collection of His Royal Highness Prince Edward. He has just finished filming a documentary series about his work for Sky Arts, investigating the lives of some of Britain’s best-loved celebrities.

He is primarily based at Justerini & Brooks’ St James’s Street premises in London, but is as likely to be found visiting customers all around the world, tasting in a cellar in Burgundy, or just perhaps escaping to the mountains with a pair of skis.

Marc de Panafieu Partner - Jaeger-LeCoultre Marc grew up in Paris and moved to Dubai more than 10 years ago. He is the Regional Brand Director of the Manufacture JaegerLeCoultre in the Middle East. Since its founding in 1833, the Manufacture has been an inventive protagonist in the field of Haute Horlogerie; the 1,249 mechanical calibers developed and the 413 registered patents indeed illustrate the creative passion that continually drives the men and women of the Grande Maison. Marc, who describes himself as a family man with deep-rooted French values and a twist of Middle Eastern influence, enjoys horse riding as he used to hunt and compete in dressage and jumping when in France. Equally, he takes pleasure in travelling and fine watchmaking, two passions that his role at Jaeger-LeCoultre enables him to combine.

PERSONALITIES Sir David Steel British Representative Sir David was one of Mark Vestey’s great friends over the years. Called to the Bar in 1966, Sir David practised in commercial law. He became junior counsel to the Treasury in 1978 and in 1981 took Silk. Sir David was appointed as a Judge of the DIFC (Dubai International Financial Centre) Courts in 2011. Prior to this - to name just one of many prestigious positions held over a legal life of the highest distinction - he served as a Judge of the High Courts on the Queen’s Bench Division from 1998 onwards. It is a great honour to have Sir David as the British Representative over British Polo Day India 2016.

Mark William Vestey (1980)

ON TRANQUILITY OF MIND BY THE ESSAYIST PLUTARCH 46-120 AD

He rejects the idea that tranquility is best achieved by doing nothing, as if the best advice for a sick man was never to leave his bed. Likewise, he does not believe that any one particular way of life is by definition free of pain, since if you are the sort of person who is unable to make right use of circumstances, a change of life will not of itself alter your disposition. The key to tranquility, argues Plutarch, is reason and wisdom. He quotes Plato, comparing life to a game of dice. There is no point in raging at the way the dice fall since there is nothing we can do about it; we must therefore make the best of what we have, and refuse to react overemotionally either to good fortune or to bad. ‘From the grimmest circumstances we must draw something that suits us and is useful.’ Plutarch now gives some examples, starting with the man who threw a stone at a dog, missed, hit his stepmother, thought about it and concluded, ‘Not so bad after all,’ WRITTEN BY A PETER JONES A magazine cutting kept for years

A LIFE IN AND AROUND POLO “The trick is to play with people you like, which makes winning and especially losing a lot more fun.” This was the advice my father gave to both sisters and I, aged 12, 8 and 6 respectively. Colin Dhillon had called quite rightly demanding that dad send the three of us over immediately, as Satnam needed some other people to play with (or more appropriately “near” in the early years) at home, and the rest is a happy lifetime in polo. It was only as the years passed that I would need to field questions from time to time about why we had been encouraged to play polo after my father’s hunting accident in 1984? It had simply never crossed our minds when we were younger. Clearly there were cigars to be smoked, there was port to be drunk and the three of us were an excellent excuse to get back into polo after Uncle Sam retired, having deputised for his brother in a Foxcote shirt for The Queen’s Cup Final victory of 1984. My mother even took to the field as her children’s ponies began to retire.

International Match Windsor (1977)

Stick & Ball (1984)

It used to be endlessly frustrating quizzing him about the not insignificant feat of winning 4 Gold Cups and 6 Queen’s Cups, as his recollection of the actual polo matches was famously hazy - when compared to the minutiae with which most of my friends recall the ups and downs - but he vividly remembered the characters on the scene and the fathomless amounts of fun that was seemingly had by all of those lucky enough to be there then. It was a passage of polo that saw the end of the post-war period and preceded the dawn of the professional era with Gonzalito Pieres and Carlos Gracida coming to the fore. A time to be grateful and a time of the beginnings of change. There is something else has become abundantly clear in recent years. Quite naturally, there are many in polo with an “angle” of sorts. As Chairman of Cirencester Park Polo Club and then The HPA, he always self-evidently just wanted the best for polo in the broadest sense and this earned him a considerable amount of respect and reputation along the way. Belligerent problems, when they regularly arose, were often dealt with over long lunches - a flashback to an era already bygone - with the offer / threat of a repeat lunch extended in the event that said problem had not sufficiently gone away. Being trusted as predominantly interested in the interests of polo in the broadest sense, he was always it seems a fair mediator and peerless diplomat in such matters. This umbrella love of polo no doubt also helpful when it came to finding middle ground, with the over-large personalities involved often somewhat averse to pitching a tent there. Through a combination of success on the field and then selfless service off it, the legacy stands of a universally loved figure within the polo community. Although this would not necessarily have been entirely to my father’s liking, as this good opinion leaves no need for a famously prodigious lunch. BEN VESTEY

BRITISH POLO DAY RUNNING TOTAL - $2,048,184 USD RAISED TO-DATE In countries all over the world, polo has a long history of raising significant funds for worthy causes. Wherever possible, British Polo Day is entirely committed to bringing to bear the full weight of its partners, its network and its creative talent to this end. A ‘gold standard’ approach has always been sought. Every pound / dollar raised goes directly to the chosen charities in each country, with no foundation or administration fee applied. All BPD sourced lot proceeds are evenly distributed and all charity-sourced lots go directly to those charities. -British Polo Day Great Britain 2016 marked the milestone not only of 50 events held but also of banking over $2mUSD for various remarkable and worthy causes from a standing start in 2011. Philanthropy has been integral to British Polo Day right from the start. Our first British event saw over £85,000 raised with Prince Harry for Sentebale, hosted by Lord Lloyd Webber at his immaculate Watership Down private ground. There was a time when we were raising more money for charity than we were generating in revenue as a business, which was bonkers but in a brilliant way. British Polo Day has always sought to raise funds for causes that resonate with our hosts in each country, as a gesture of gratitude for the gift of their support and patronage. Alongside this ongoing approach, we are increasingly also incorporating working closely with entrepreneurial billionaire philanthropists, who have global grand transformative challenges and change in mind. These individuals have chosen a problem to fix, coupled with a razor sharp and often disruptive approach to achieving this end. Alongside the ongoing benefits of funds raised and mutual community build, British Polo Day’s sister business BE Social Global aims to massively amplify impact on social media channels, which ensures an awareness bounce but also further engagement. This is especially resonant with the younger generation, who are keen to get involved in their own way and are increasingly looking towards those leading philanthropists seeking to create real change, as opposed to say the less nimble approach that might traditionally be taken by governments or institutions.
