Welcome to the British Polo Day USA, presented by Land Rover! We are delighted to be holding our inaugural British Polo Day in the USA at the Will Rogers Polo Club, the only remaining polo field in Los Angeles, California (when in the 1930’s there were over 25). The park was originally the private estate of Will Rogers: famed humorist, newspaper columnist, cowboy, author, movie star and polo player. Rogers and his family lived here between 1928 and 1935. During this period, he and his friends (including David Niven, Spencer Tracy, Hal Roach, Walt Disney and Clark Gable) played here regularly. We must also thank our hosts, Lord and Lady Frederick Windsor. Freddie and Sophie have called LA their home for nearly five years now and have been instrumental in making this event possible. And, since Sophie is an alumna of Cambridge while Freddie attended both Eton and Oxford, it is especially fitting that we are bringing players from these three institutions here this weekend. The links between our countries and players from these institutions are of course very strong. An Old Etonian team first played over here in 1910, and HRH Prince William’s match here in recent years received worldwide coverage. One of the most famous Oxford Blues was 10-goal American Deveraux Milburn, known as the greatest back there has ever been, who captained Oxford in two Varsity matches and went on to play for the USA in every match between 1909 and 1927. Similarly Tommy Hitchcock, another Old Oxonian 10 goaler, played for the USA team (and had one of the characters in the Great Gatsby based on him). Polo is thriving both sides of the pond and we are in for a thrilling day of polo. The aim of a British Polo Day is to celebrate the history and heritage of the sport, and continue the tradition of playing high-quality amateur polo against friends across the world, whilst also acting as a platform upon which to build a network of diplomatic and commercial opportunities. We are also very pleased to be showcasing the best luxury brands here, and would like to thank all our partners. We hope you have a great day! The Committee of British Polo Day - USA

Will rogers welcome note 10

Dear Guests, It is with great pleasure that the Will Rogers Polo Club and Los Angeles welcome British Polo Day, its guests and sponsors to the Will Rogers State Historic Park. The beautiful park sits above the Pacific Ocean, and was given as a gift to the State of California by the Rogers family in 1944 so everyone can enjoy this wonderful equestrian facility and park that at one time was exclusive only to the Rogers Family and his personal guests. The park is a unique oasis in the middle of Los Angeles where equestrian and polo activities are welcome. Some of you may know of Will Rogers, the actor and humorist, but you can tell by walking around the property that he was a true horseman. One of his famous quotations appropriately states, “Horsemanship through the history of all nations has been considered one of the highest accomplishments.” He would have been proud that British Polo Day chose his home to play their inaugural US Polo match. The Will Rogers Polo Club is one of the oldest Polo Clubs in the United States and has a membership that resembles the United Nations in its diversity, with an age group than spans sixty years. Every year we host various charity events. However, hosting British Polo Day is a special honor for us. On a personal level, I went to Eton, and was also in the Life Guards before coming to work on the West Coast of the United States. Therefore, it is an extremely special opportunity for me to be part of this event. We know that a very exciting weekend of activities has been arranged, and welcome all our out of State guests to sunny California. One of our famous local actors who used to play polo here commented “Playing polo is like trying to play golf during an earthquake.” Welcome, and enjoy the day at Will Rogers Park.

As an old friend of British Polo Day’s MD & Partner Ben Vestey, I have long been impressed by his passion for polo and have noted the progress of his enterprise with great interest. I had the pleasure of attending BPD Mexico last November at the sunlit Balvenera Polo Club in Queretaro, where I witnessed first-hand the quality of the relationships that BPD is building among its friends, charities and business partners. These are flourishing, not only between Britain and each host nation, but also between what is now an expanding group of interconnected countries. My wife Sophie and I have made our home in Los Angeles and so it is with great pleasure that we are supporting this inaugural British Polo Day in the United States. I know that the aim for Ben and his Co-Founders is for this unique event to be regarded as one of the most enjoyable and sought-after invitations in town. Given the charm, exuberance and strength of will that it has taken to forge this young enterprise, I am confident that BPD USA will establish itself right at the forefront of what is now a truly global network. On behalf of the British contingent, welcome to the inaugural British Polo Day USA. We hope you have a wonderful day!

Lord Frederick Windsor

British Polo Day carries on the tradition of the British playing polo against friends in a host of different countries around the world.

1

The green player has the line, and at fair speed the white player would be crossing the line without sufficient safety margin, resulting in a penalty against white.

3

When travelling in the same direction the white player may draw level with green and then force him across the line and take possession of the ball without committing a dangerous foul.

5

Two players riding for a ball from opposite directions in the open must both give way to the left and take the ball on their right or offside.

2

Even at a far lesser angle the white player would still be crossing the line if he continues in that direction, and committing a dangerous foul.

4

The white player may move in parallel with the line and play a shot providing he can do so without interfering with the green’s mount or causing him to check back. If white would cross the line to the dotted position it would be a foul.

6

When two players are approaching a ball in the open from different directions, the player (white), with the line of the ball on his offside, right hand side, has right of way.

THe Brompton cycle polo exhibition match 30 1

The Brompton Cycle Polo Exhibition Match

This year at the British Polo Day USA we are pleased to showcase Cycle Polo in partnership with Brompton bicycles. All Bromptons are designed and built in their factory in West London, England. Brompton is one of only two major frame manufacturers still based in the UK, and have been in full production since 1988. The company remains in private hands and is now led by Will Butler-Adams, though the Brompton’s inventor, Andrew Ritchie, continues to act as Technical Director. Today, Bromptons are sold in 42 export markets. Cycle Polo was invented in County Wicklow, Ireland, in 1891 by retired cyclist, Richard J. Mecredy. That same year the first cycle polo match was played between The Scalp and the Ohne Hast C.C. Towards the end of the 19th century the game reached Great Britain, France, and the United States where the American Star Bicycle was a popular mount. The first international match was played between Ireland and England in 1901. Cycle polo was a demonstration sport at the 1908 London Olympics with Ireland winning the gold, beating Germany. The sport reached its peak of popularity in Great Britain during the 1930s with the introduction of the regional leagues. Cycle polo also flourished in France during this period with the establishment of the French league. Internationals between France and Great Britain were held regularly. However the Second World War marked the beginning of the demise of cycle polo in Britain. The sport managed to hang on in France though, with league championships held regularly till today. The 1980s saw the rise of two new powers in cycle polo, India and USA. The Cycle Polo Association of India was officially created in 1966 and the Bicycle Polo Association of America was created in 1994. International cycle polo matches staged a comeback in the 1990s with the first world championship organized in 1996 in the USA. Today there is organized cycle polo being played in Brazil, Argentina, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Great Britain, India, Ireland, Malaysia, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Switzerland and USA. Cycle polo was officially recognized by the International Cycling Union in 2001.

The Oxford University Polo Club was founded in 1874, three years after the introduction of polo to Britain, by undergraduates from Christ Church and Brasenose Colleges, led by Mr. Walter Long (later Viscount Long of Wraxall and First Lord of the Admiralty). The first match was held on the 1st of July 1877, and was contested by its two founder Colleges amid considerable pomp and ceremony. The great success of that day encouraged the players to establish a Varsity match with the Cambridge University Polo Club. This Varsity match is the oldest polo fixture in the western world and was first played at the Bullingdon Cricket Ground in Oxford on the 27th of November 1878. It is the oldest continuing polo fixture in the western world. During the late sixties and early seventies, polo at Oxford enjoyed a purple patch, winning the annual match eight times in a row. BPD USA will be Casra Labelle’s 5th cap (under the auspices of Cambridge) and Max Kirchoff ’s first (who has the unusual distinction of having studied at both Oxford and Cambridge). The Oxbridge Team is completed with the additions of Ardeshir Radour and Graydon Brittan, who will both also receive their first BPD caps.

Polo is perhaps the oldest game in the world – having been played over 2500 years ago - and is truly international. The name polo is said to have been derived from the Tibetan word “pulu”, meaning ball.

History of the game

n 600 BC the first recorded game of polo took place between the Turkomans and Persians. The Turkomans won. Polo began as a training game for cavalry units, usually the King’s Guard or other elite troops. To the warlike tribesmen, who played it with as many as 100 to a side, it was a miniature battle. Persian literature and art give us the richest accounts of polo in antiquity. Ferdowsi, the famed poet-historian, gives a number of accounts of royal polo tournaments in his 9th century epic, Shahnameh (the Epic of Kings). In the earliest account, Ferdowsi romanticises an international match between Turanian force and the followers of Siyâvash, a legendary prince from the earliest centuries of the Empire. The game spread into North India. In fact Sultan Qutb-ud-din Aibak, the first Muslim Emperor of North India, actually died accidentally in 1210 playing polo.

From Persia, in medieval times polo spread after the Muslim conquests to the Ayyubid and Mameluke dynasties of Egypt and the Levant, whose elites favored it above all other sports. Notable sultans such as Saladin and Baybars were known to play it and encourage it in their court. Polo sticks were features on the Mameluke precursor to modern day playing cards. Polo was passed from Persia to other parts of Asia including the Indian subcontinent and China, where it was very popular during the Tang Dynasty and frequently depicted in paintings and statues. The Moguls were largely responsible for taking the game from Persia to the east and by the 16th century the Emperor Babur had established it in India. Polo was revived in Japan by the 8th Shogun, Tokugawa Yoshimune (1684-1751) and was played until early 20th century. It was the favourite sport of the last Shogun who surrendered power to the Emperor in 1868.

The modern game of polo, though formalised and popularised by the British, is derived from Manipur (now a state in India) when British tea planters discovered the game in Manipur (Munipoor) on the Burmese border with India and eåstablished the first polo club in the world at Silchar, west of Manipur in 1862. In 1869, Edward “Chicken” Hartopp, 10th Hussars, read an account of the game in The Field, while stationed at Aldershot, and, with brother officers, organised the first game known then as “hockey on horseback”- on a hastily-rolled Hounslow Heath against The 9th Lancers. The 1st Life Guards and the Royal Horse Guards were quick to follow suit on grounds at Hounslow and in Richmond Park; and then on a small ground near Earl’s Court known as Lillie Bridge. The first polo club in England was Monmouthshire, founded by Capt. Francis “Tip” Herbert, 7th Lancers, at his brother’s seat, Clytha Park, near Abergavenny in 1872.

Global Philanthropy Partners BRITISH POLO DAY RUNNING TOTAL - $858,530 USD raised to-date. In countries all over the world, polo has a long history of raising significant funding for worthy causes. Wherever possible, British Polo Day is entirely committed to bringing to bear the full weight of our partners, network and creative talent to this end. In partnership with our host in each case, British Polo Day divides the fund raising proceeds from charity auctions and raffles that are held at any event between local and British charities. In so doing, the polo ties between two nations are reinforced further through shared philanthropic aims. The Bearman family have taken their experience with Oscar and his ongoing treatment at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) and have set themselves ambitious fundraising targets. British Polo Day events will continue to contribute to meeting these targets in the years ahead. Homeboy Industries was only recently introduced to British Polo Day by the formidable Wendy Stark, who is a great friend of Lord Frederick Windsor and his wife Sophie. BPD’s two Co-Founders Ed Olver and Tom Hudson as well as MD & Partner Ben Vestey have all served time in The British Army. This experience illuminated the transformative change on difficult lives that can come about as a result of the foundations of “community”. Father Greg’s longstanding - and often frontline - commitment to a better life for gang members in Los Angeles chimes with The Directors of BPD. Homeboy Industries will remain a cause that is supported year-on-year at BPD USA. We will raise what we can to support their work in transforming lives and the virtuous circle that this entails. The USA are world leaders in so many ways but the area of philanthropy is one in which they leave other nations trailing in their wake. Worthy causes come in all shapes and sizes and the combination of an entrepreneurial spirit as well as favourable government led incentives ensures that the 3rd Sector in The US continues to set the example both on the domestic and world stage. As far as it is within your power to do so, please bid with reckless abandon!

On behalf of the ‘Face Value’ charity appeal for the children at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, England, I wanted to thank all of you attending today’s British Polo Day event in Los Angeles, and for allowing our Face Value Campaign to be part of this fantastic day. Our Face Value campaign for Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) was started a few years ago after my first child, Oscar, was born with a rare syndrome called Crouzon Syndrome, a rare genetic condition that causes the craniofacial bones to fuse prematurely. Oscar is cheeky, bright and brimming with personality. Everyone who knows him is delighted he’s doing so well because he hasn’t had an easy start in life. Oscar has already had numerous operations to relieve the pressure on his brain and eyes to improve his breathing. When Oscar is older he’ll need another major operation at Great Ormond Street Hospital to help expand and reshape his skull so that his brain can keep growing. Children with craniofacial conditions have to face many challenges - not only functional, but also the psychological pressure of looking ‘different’. With your help, the craniofacial surgery team at GOSH could develop life-changing new technologies to help children like Oscar. The craniofacial team at Great Ormond Street Hospital are committed to giving each patient the best possible chance in life. But further leaps forward are only possible with investment and research and development. Top craniofacial surgeons, Owase Jeelani and David Dunaway aim to undertake an ambitious fiveyear programme to revolutionise surgery for children with craniosynostosis. They aim to develop pioneering new, and less cumbersome, devices to surgically move the skull and face, whilst improving the understanding of the anatomical problems of children with craniosynostosis. We’re committed to help raise £1million as soon as possible so that the team can start taking strides forward. We have already made good progress raising 50% of our target. Thank you very much for supporting today’s auction and with any donations you might care to make. It will be hugely appreciated by a large number of children who will benefit from your generosity. Thank you all very much and I hope you enjoy today’s British Polo Day Event.

Christian Bearman (Oscar’s Dad)

In the 1980s, the city of Los Angeles was struggling to deal with escalating gang violence and gang membership. At that time, Boyle Heights had more gang members per capita than any other place in the country. Around that time, Father Greg realized, with the help of many people in his parish, that he needed to provide jobs and education as alternatives to the gangs and the senseless violence they create. So, “Jobs for a Future,” was started as part of Dolores Mission in 1988. “Jobs for a Future” later became Homeboy Industries in 2001, and has grown to become one of the largest, most comprehensive and most successful gang intervention, rehabilitation and re-entry programs in the country. As one of the largest gang intervention, rehabilitation and re-entry programs in the country, Homeboy Industries has helped nurture into existence 46 similar programs in the United States (and several outside). The goal is to create a movement in this country to address the lethal absence hope among innercity youth. A dream would be to formalize a “National Homeboy Network” to ignite further this model of social enterprise, a therapeutic community, healing, intentional attachment repair and jobs/skills training as an “exit ramp” for those stuck in a cycle of violence and incarceration. Convening and sharing strategies, best-practices and a common vision will be the hope for the future of the National Homeboy Network. Solidifying our services through implementation of lessons learned from the convention, reconvening to share results and advancing the movement are Homeboy’s dreams for the coming years. Part of Homeboy’s wish is to broaden further the impact of our service delivery model by establishing and building partnerships with peer organizations who can become a part of the National Homeboy Network “Homeboy Industries has been the tipping point to change the metaphors around gangs and how we deal with them in Los Angeles County. This organization has engaged the imagination of 120,000 gang members and helped them to envision an exit ramp off the “freeway” of violence, addiction and incarceration. And the country has taken notice. We have helped more than 40 other organizations replicate elements of our service delivery model, broadening further the understanding that community trumps gang -- every time.” - Father Greg

Estimated Value : $4,000 USD British Polo Day is an invitation only gathering point that is now a truly global network. Close relationships are being forged, and indeed are flourishing, not only between Britain and the host countries in each case but also in what is now an expanding group of connected countries. No more than 10 events are selected each year and the experiences include everything from a closing Gala on The Great Wall of China to a party beyond compare on the ramparts of Jodhpur’s Mehrangarh Fort. With all countries now oversubscribed, due to a determination to keep each leg to pegged at a capacity that encourages interest and fun, these tickets will only prove harder and harder to come by. The Directors of British Polo Day lean towards our friends and allies to make up the core of each event and, from that group, those who bid generously – and are wholly responsible for the success of our philanthropic efforts – are always invited in the first instance. Winning this lot will secure four guest invitations of choice over the next 12 months as a minimum but additional invitations may also be extended due to this kind support of our chosen Charities for BPD GB. www.britishpoloday.com
