Young Dressage Horse

SPECTATOR GUIDE

KBIS Welcome

On behalf of everyone at KBIS, we are delighted to welcome you to this year’s KBIS Young Dressage Horse Championships.

For us, supporting this prestigious event is about recognising the passion and hard work that goes into producing young horses for dressage, and about investing in the next generation. From the first steps in training to the electric atmosphere of the championship arena, every stage of the journey is shaped by commitment, skill, and care; values we share deeply at KBIS.

We know that behind every combination competing here there is a dedicated team: owners, breeders, riders, trainers, and supporters who have given their time, expertise, and encouragement. These championships are as much a testament to their efforts as they are to the horses’ ability and promise.

KBIS is proud to stand alongside the dressage community, offering protection to allow riders and owners to focus on what truly matters - bringing out the best in their horses.

Whether you are here as a competitor, a spectator, or a supporter, we hope you enjoy the atmosphere, the standard of competition, and the chance to witness future champions in the making.

We wish every competitor the very best of luck and look forward to celebrating your achievements both in and out of the arena. Here’s to a fantastic championship.

How It Works

With titles for horses from the ages of four to seven, get to grips with how the format works across the age categories; designed to help young stars show their best on the big day.

Four-Year-Olds

Combinations stepping up to contest the KBIS title for four-year-old horses only present in one test at the LeMieux Nationals.

A class of high quality horses, all of whom have progressed from qualification via the KBIS semi-finals, will ride the BD National Test for four-yearolds in front of international young horse judge Sascha Schulz. As this age is the youngest a horse can compete under the BD rules, the test is only ridden once - with no ride off - and the highest scoring horse is the winner.

Five and Six-Year-Olds

In the KBIS Championships for five and six-year-old horses, combinations will be asked to ride the BD National Test for the respective age group in a pre-judging phase, which takes place on Saturday 13 September. Marks awarded here determine the horses who will return for final judging.

During final judging, horses enter the arena in a group to ride a commanded plan. All horses in the final judging are then ridden by the rider judge, before the placings are awarded.

Seven-Year-Olds

The seven-year-old class provides a thrilling window into the stars of the future; with horses here showing some of the higher level work.

Combinations in the seven-year-old KBIS Championship ride the BD National Test for this age group, with no pre-judging or final judging. The horse who achieves the highest score in front of Sascha Schulz, Spencer Wilton and Eva-Maria Vint-Warmington will be the winner. The class takes place on Saturday 13 September in the LeMieux Arena.

Rider Judge Meet Phoebe Peters

Ahead of her first ride in the UK in five years, we chat with history-making Brit Phoebe Peters as she prepares to make a debut appearance as the guest rider for this year’s KBIS Championships.

Having made waves as a youth rider, earning Britain’s first ever gold medals as a Pony rider, Phoebe Peters has gone on to forge a career in the sport. The now 26-yearold rider made the move to the Continent following completion of a degree in Modern Foreign Langauges, and has worked in several top stables to date. Having ridden for Klaus Balkenhol, Van Olst Horses and Reesink Stables - securing several top young horse titles - Phoebe’s career has seen her focus on the

training of young horses and stallions, whilst also working at the highest level of the sport.

In the Netherlands, Phoebe is the only British rider to have won the Pavo Cup, the Dutch National Championships for Young Horses. It was with the Van Olsts stallion Everest in 2023 that she first claimed the trophy; before returning to the top step of the podium in 2025 with her Reesink stable star, the four-year-old McMary.

What do you look for in a young horse?

“I look for a good hindleg, as good a walk and canter as possible. A good hindleg in the trot gives you something to work with. I like a horse with a good engine, they need to want to go forward and work with you.”

From the stables you’ve worked in, are there any particular bloodlines you’ve liked the most?

“I love the Vitalis lines.

I’ve ridden some Vaderland offspring - who’s by Vitalis - and they all have a super attitude to work.

This year I’ve ridden the first of the McLaren offspring; we all really like them. I’m also biased towards Secret. I have my own horse by Secret, they have very good canters.”

You ride a lot of breeding stallions, how are they to work with?

“With the breeding stallions, they can be different depending on their individual character.

Where I work now, we treat all the stallions the same - they go in the paddock, they stand in the cross ties next to geldings and mares. When you treat them like this it transfers to the riding and they’re used to socialising. This helps when you have to present them in busy warm up arenas.

Often they have lots of presence and confidence, we have plenty of horses who go to stallion shows from a young age - they learn to be brave and have fun, and this is so helpful later in their careers where they actually enjoy the bigger atmospheres.”

What’s your best experience to date in your career on the continent?

“Winning the Pavo Cup twice is for sure my highlight. Here in Holland it’s probably the most important competition for young horses; to win it not once, but twice, was really special.

Also riding at the FEI WBSFH World Breeding Championships in 2023 was an amazing experience. Just the sheer quality of young horses there, along with the quality of the riding and training was really amazing to see. “

How important is the support of good owners and a good team?

“Good owners and a good team are everything. Without the owners we have no horses. Without the team we have nothing.

Particularly owners that understand that every horse has it’s own journey to go on, is really important. Some young horses need more time, and you won’t compete them until they’re six -yearsold, and some horses are ready to compete at the end of their three-year-old year. It’s really key that you have the support of your owners

in helping your horse find it’s own journey, and tailoring everything to that horse.

Having a team of amazing grooms, farriers, vets working together is what makes everything come together. We can’t do our job as riders, without the love and care of those working with us to prepare the horses, and make them look and feel amazing. I’m lucky to work with a super team in my job here in Holland, we all love our horses and celebrate our achievements together.”

Tell us about some of your rides to look out for in the future?

McMary is our shooting star, “her results this season say it all and we think that she has the engine of a young horse that you want. She has a lot of go!

I have a Westfalian three-year-old that I’m lucky to

ride. He’s a Premium stallion called Desigual; he was third in the Westfalian Championships this year, I’m very excited about him. He’s a horse that you sit on and you feel a Grand Prix horse already.

I also have a Trakhener Champion called Kante. He’s perhaps not as extravengent as some of the young horses you see at these championships but he has a very good walk and canter, and he has the character to be able to train him right the way through the levels.

Away from my work rides, I’m proud to ride my own horse Larkshill Supernatural, who was bred in Britain by Heather Stack. I’ve owned him since a foal and he made his Prix St Georges debut this year. The journey from the very first rides to training the advanced work is very special.”

Judge Profile Spencer Wilton

Olympic superstar Spencer Wilton joins the judging line up for several of the KBIS Young Horse Championships. Read more about this British dressage legend, who was part of the nation’s rapid rise to success during the 2010s.

Born in 1973 and raised in Suffolk, Spencer was a keen member of the Essex and

He won his first Dressage National title in 1999 and in 2006 made his first international debut and to date, Spencer has now won thirteen National titles.

Spencer & Jen Goodman’s Super Nova II were selected to represent Great Britain at the Games of the XXXI Olympiad held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and alongside team mates, Carl Hester MBE, Fiona Bigwood and Charlotte Dujardin CBE, they made the nation proud as they brought home the Team Silver Medal.

After leaving school, Spencer followed his eventing dream, as a working pupil for Ruth McMullen, Lucinda Green MBE and Mark Todd CBE and after a chance meeting with Carl Hester MBE he switched to dressage and the pair spent 13 years working

As well as representing Great Britain at the European Championships at Gothenburg in 2017, the partnership then went on to be part of the Bronze Medal winning team at the World Equestrian Games, Tryon in 2018.

Spencer rounded off 2018 with marrying his long term partner and fellow dressage rider Darren Hicks. In 2019 Spencer unfortunately had to undergo back surgery which put a halt to his competition season. Having made a full recovery he started his 2020 Tokyo build up with four consecutive wins at the Lier & Keysoe CDIs with his wonderful dancing partner Super Nova II, before COVID-19 lockdown commenced in the middle of March. Later in 2021, Spencer announced the retirement of ‘Neville’ at 18-years-old, who went on to spend four happy years at home with his owner Jen Goodman.

With no competition commitments during 2020, Spencer & Darren moved to the Cotswolds where they run a successful, busy training and competition yard.

Queen Quinn G

This summer, Fiona Bigwood’s dazzling mare Quinn G completed a FEI WBSFH World Breeding Championship hattrick, earning her third consecutive title as a now seven-year-old in supreme company in Verden.

A visit to the FEI WBSFH World Breeding Championships for Young Horses is a must-have item on the bucket list of any dressage fan.

British Dressage has been lucky enough to celebrate winners previously in the form of history-making mare Woodlander Farouche under Michael Eilberg, as well as Lottie Fry’s multiple victories representing the Netherlands with KWPN stallion stars Glamourdale and Kjento. This year, more history was made as Fiona Bigwood returned to claim a second title of her own, with her wonder horse Quinn G flying the flag for her home nation of Denmark. Whilst the horse represents their land of birth, we can be immensely proud of the efforts of those in the saddle

representing British Dressage, handling the pressure of the big occasion with grace and showing the beauty of the horse-human bond.

After winning as a five-year-old in 2023, with Betina Jaeger in the saddle, and as a six-year-old in 2024, the Danish Warmblood mare Quinn G completed the trio of FEI WBSFH World Championship wins in Verden, securing the seven-year-old title in supreme style. Owned and ridden by Fiona Bigwood, the combination repeated their clean sweep of victories in 2024, winning the qualification round on a score of 80.177%, before earning 81.650% in the final. Judged by Sven Rothenberger and Henning Lehrmann in the young horse seats at C, the duo rewarded Quinn with 9.2

for trot, 8.8 for walk, 9.2 canter, 8.5 submission and 9.2 for perspective. Paired with impressive test riding scores of 73.857% and 73.143%, their final mark would place them three marks ahead of the second placed combination of Leonie Richter and Most Wanted Nero Van Bellin (Morricone x Donnerball).

Speaking about her mare, Fiona Bigwood said: “She gives you so much and I just wanted to show off what a great horse she is. She has so much energy and yet you can still bring her back to a walk, keep the reins long and she goes straight into a superb walk through her body. She just has a great attitude to life. She’s not a typical chestnut mare, she’s a great chestnut mare.”

Role Model KBIS Champions

Recap on some of the horses who’ve secured the BD Young Horse titles in years gone by, going on to achieve great things both on the national and international scene.

Jagerbomb

Dante Weltino x Jazz 2021 7YO Champion

Owned by Becky Moody and Jo Cooper, and home-bred by Becky, Jagerbomb burst onto the scene in 2021 when claiming the BD title for seven-year-olds. That year, the gelding also contested the Prix St Georges and Advanced Medium Championships, cutting his teeth in the big arena at a fantastic show.

Their winning score in the Young Horse Championship was 76.205%, and Jagerbomb lived up to his promise, going on to be part of the bronze medal winning team at the Paris 2024 Olympics, and the silver medal winning team in Crozet for this year’s Europeans - where he also placed fourth in the Freestyle.

Full Moon II

Fürstenball x Gribaldi 2022 6YO Champion

Laura Tomlinson and Ursula Bechtolsheimer’s home-bred Full Moon II was successfully shortlisted for this year’s European Championships, after an outstanding season at Grand Prix, and is another title winning KBIS graduate.

In 2022, ridden by Sarah Rogers, ‘Moony’ was awarded the win in the final judged by Ulf Moller and David Hunt. The tall bay gelding has represented Britain twice at the World Breeding Championships; with Sarah in the saddle as a six-year-old, and in 2023 with Laura on board, qualifying for the final round as a seven-year-old.

Swanmore Dantina

Dante Weltino x Charatin 2021

6YO Champion

Ridden and owned by Sadie Smith, Swanmore Dantina is a shooting star on the British scene, flying the flag for British breeding and training.

In 2021, the gifted mare won the six-year-old title after showing her high quality paces in front of Erik Thielgaard, David Hunt and rider judge Tom Good, who said at the time that ‘she has the attributes to be a top horse and is exciting for the future’. How right he was. This season, Sadie and ‘Dia’ made their mark at Grand Prix, also earning a place on the European Championships long list. Their building record of championship wins quite simply speaks for itself.
