WELCOME

ith the indulgence of Christmas and New Year a month behind us, it’s time to knuckle down to the challenge of a new year. With revitalised goals, fresh focus and a renewed vigour, we all set out to make this year better than the last. Whether it’s a sporting challenge, personal target or professional ambition, the important thing is to be realistic and set yourself measurable milestones. There’s no point in setting yourself up to fail, but the sense of achievement when you succeed is a feeling like no other. We get so caught up in the grind of day-to-day life that we often neglect our own wellbeing. So, in a new series this year, the focus is on you! Over the next eight issues Andrea Oakes will look at mind, body and spirit to help you to be healthy, happy and at peace both mentally and physically. It’s amazing how small changes can make big differences – I’ve learned that through my own Cognitive Behaviour Therapy sessions. I hope you all can take some useful advice from each one and help improve your wellbeing – you’ll notice a difference. I’m looking forward to a packed schedule in 2018. On home soil, we have a year-round schedule of CDIs for all to enjoy and we must support them as spectators. There’s no denying these shows are expensive to run. Increased infrastructure, officials, prize money, venue décor… they all add up. Sponsorship is increasingly hard to come by and the competitor entry fees don’t cover costs, so we must get behind them and visit. Dressage is so accessible – there are not many sports you can pay around £20 to watch all day at close quarters, meet the stars up close and personal – a number of top riders have exciting young horses who’ll make their international debut this year – and get free tuition by observing the best in the world. So, why not make it one of your 2018 resolutions to get out for the day at a CDI you’ve never visited before? You know you want to! Winnie Murphy, Editor, British Dressage
