bristololdvic.org.uk | 0117 987 7877

Welcome We’ve been so happy to hear the response to the work staged since spring. Over 42,000 people, including nearly 7,000 new bookers, have filled Bristol Old Vic with joy for shows including Pride & Prejudice* (*sort of), Kathy & Stella Solve a Murder!, and most recently, cheeky little brown and Choir Boy. And there’s much more to come, including Arabian Nights and Four Seasons which will charm you and your families this festive season. Plus, you’re invited to dance your way into 2024 at our friendly, all-inclusive New Year’s Eve House Party, filling the entire front of house with great live music, entertainment, food, drink and laughter! Hidden Voices connect several shows this season. We’re delighted to be producing Gareth Farr’s new play, A Child of Science. Directed by Matthew Dunster and with a cast that includes Tom Felton, the play charts the quite staggering invention of IVF in the 1970s, unearthing some of the many lost stories of women who gave their bodies over to its development. Nanny, a new comedy about two nursery workers trying to establish their voices as a comic double-act premieres in The Weston Studio. In The Glass Menagerie a family can’t say what needs to be said to each other in an intense, acclaimed new production from Atri Banerjee. Because we’d love you to visit more often, Bristol Old Vic remains committed to affordable tickets – see page 10 for more info. Consider joining as a Member for the first choice of seats, higher discounts, and to support our continued and extensive community work across Bristol – see page 20. We’re open most days from first thing, so if you just want somewhere friendly and warm to hang out with a great cup of coffee, know that you’re welcome to come on in anytime. See you soon!

7 – 11 MAY THEATRE AAAA “Stylish, wild, gloriously romantic” The Independent

Atri Banerjee’s acclaimed production of Tennessee Williams’ semiautobiographical masterpiece, first seen at the Royal Exchange Theatre, returns starring Geraldine Somerville (Gosford Park) as Amanda. Tom escapes a suffocating home life through cigarettes and long visits to the movies while his sister, Laura, withdraws into her records and collection of glass animals. But their mother, Amanda, harbours dreams for them far beyond their shabby apartment. When Tom brings home a potential suitor for Laura, Amanda seizes the opportunity to try and change their fortunes forever.

5 JUN – 6 JUL* THEATRE In 1978, Patrick Steptoe, Robert Edwards, and Jean Purdy changed the world as we know it – and most people don’t even know their names. Bruntwood Prize-winning writer (Britannia Waves the Rules) Gareth Farr’s brilliant new play tells their pioneering story, and those of the army of women from all over the UK whose immense bravery helped them achieve the impossible – to create human life in vitro.

A Child of Science charts the incredible events that led to one of the most remarkable medical breakthroughs of our time: the birth of a baby girl and the creation of IVF, a procedure which has supported the birth of over 12 million babies worldwide over the last forty years. Directed by the highly acclaimed West End director Matthew Dunster (Hangmen, 2:22 A Ghost Story, Shirley Valentine) and featuring the award-winning Tom Felton (Harry Potter), A Child of Science is about determination, dreams, hope, and courage. It’s a celebration of life.

AAAA “Gritty, well researched... a real tour de force” WhatsOnStage on Britannia Waves the Rules

*Stage Talk to be confirmed – stay tuned! A Child of Science is a fictionalised account of the true story of the events that led to the first ‘test-tube’ birth of a baby and the invention of IVF. The play is based on research and interviews over many years with embryologists and fertility doctors, some of whom worked closely with Bob Edwards, as well as those whose lives were affected by and enabled by those events. It features characters inspired by real-life individuals, and some entirely imagined by the writer.

THE WESTON STUDIO

A story of unexpected friendship told through physical comedy and dance. An old, hard-working farmer lives alone. One day, a baby clown bounces off a passing circus train and is separated from family and friends. A little reluctantly at first, the farmer takes the clown in and, as time passes, they discover that by being with each other, they find something new in themselves. Adapted from the charming picture-book by Marla Frazee, this wordless, heartwarming show is accompanied by an original live score. For ages 3+ but suitable for all the family.

With help from some friends (and half a pound of cheese), can Pearl make her uncle better and prove princesses can be doctors too?
