Welcome to our 8th edition of Bristol Jazz and Blues Festival! While the eagerly anticipated renovations at Colston Hall continue, we will be staging concerts at St George’s, Bristol Folk House, O2 Academy, Fiddlers, Colston Hall foyer and Bambalan where we hope you’ll find plenty to satisfy your jazz and blues tastes!

As always, we try our best to present as many different genres under the jazz and blues umbrella as possible, featuring as many of Bristol and the South West’s jazz and blues talent as we can squeeze on stage. Our policy has always been to showcase the world class musicians we have living among us and have them collaborate with our visiting artists and there’s lots in this year’s programme to fullfill that aim.

It is a particular pleasure to have Tricia BouttĂŠ join the programme this year after her aunt, Lillian BouttĂŠ, the Musical Ambassador for New Orleans - a title inherited from Louis Armstrong, was a featured singer at our first Festival in 2013 (pictured above).

In these 8 years we have featured over 400 bands, and more than half of them Bristol based. Our Jazz community has developed to the point that some of our visiting artists now ask us to provide their bands with our musicians. The music industry in our City is strong and we are proud to have contributed to that strength.

This year our free concerts on Sunday at Colston Hall present 5 school bands. Their talent deserves public attention. We have taken a Swing Band into over 60 Primary schools over 2 years and we would like to do this on a regular basis when we can raise the funds. And our next goal is to form the Bristol Youth Jazz Orchestra similar to the National Youth Jazz Orchestra.

If we can get the support to do this Bristol would be the fourth UK City to have one.

RONNIE SCOTT’S ALL STARS & UWE BIG BAND

Thursday 26 March | 8pm | 1532 Theatre | £20, £15, £10 + bf The famous Ronnie Scott’s All Stars will be joining forces with Bristol’s very own University of the West of England Big Band in a joint concert at the 1532 Theatre. This will form part of the opening night for the University’s ‘Festival of Sound’ as well as Bristol Jazz and Blues Festival.

The UWE Big Band, under the direction of Keith Morgan and Nick Attwood, will open the concert performing well known charts from the big band rep before the Ronnie Scott’s All Stars take to the stage.

The Ronnie Scott’s All Stars perform a vast repertoire of jazz music and is comprised of the club’s house musicians. This dynamic group is lead by the club’s artistic director, James Pearson. The All Stars have been touring the U.K. extensively performing “The Soho Songbook”, “1959: The Year that Shaped Jazz”, and “The Ronnie Scott’s Story” over the last few years. In 2020 they will be bringing “Ronnie Scott’s at 60” to the stage.

At the age of 15, a recording of Jimmy Rushing with Count Basie was Paul Jones’s introduction to the sound of big band blues. 60 years later via Manfred Mann, Eric Clapton, The Blues Band and BBC’s The Blues Show Jones revisits that early inspiration with a powerhouse big band backing him in a selection of his personal blues and swing favourites!

JAZZ DAMES PRESENTS WHAT SHE SAID

Friday 27 March | 7pm | St George’s | £22, £17, £12 + bf What She Said brings together five of Bristol’s top female musicians, Rebecca Nash, Tammy Payne, Ruth Hammond, Sara Colman and Katya Gorrie, and their shared fascination of the known and unknown women behind the music of the last 100 years; unknown women fundamental to the big band scene of the 30s, pioneers who bucked the status quo and ploughed their own style like Kate Bush and Alice Coltrane, and others who seized the mood of the western world like Joni Mitchell.

As female composer performers who haven’t felt limited by their gender, Nash, Hammond, Colman, Payne and Gorrie have searched their record collections and drawn out women who forged a future they now inhabit. These women are both the apparent and hidden voices inside the heads of the project leaders and this project will take them back into their early days of study, through their professional careers to examine their influences.

If jazz was a recipe, the blues is a vital ingredient. For many, the two are intrinsically linked. Saxophone maestro and Bristol Jazz & Blues Festival artist-in-residence Pee Wee Ellis premieres this new show featuring a personal selection of classic compositions and originals with a hand-picked all-star group.

A little bit about our much beloved Honorary Patron Pee Wee Ellis Few musicians get to celebrate their 78t​h ​birthday knee deep in a new project charting the history of funk and its impact on music. Even fewer are still actively touring the world with their own bands or working in new collaborations. But after some 58 eventful years as a musician, band leader, arranger and composer Pee Wee Ellis can claim all those things.

His remarkable story spans six decades, starting in the 50s when he took himself and his sax off to New York City to find his heroes Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk and the great Sonny Rollins (who became his teacher and mentor.) A promising career leading jazz bands in Florida took an 10

unexpected turn in 1965 when he joined James Brown’s sensational Revue, playing alto. Within six months he was bandleader and musical director and was co-writing with James Brown. ​‘Cold Sweat’, ​widely acknowledged as the first true funk record, and many of JB’s hits for the next four years, including ‘​Say It Loud, I’m Black and I’m Proud’ w ​ ere the fruit of this collaboration.

By 1970 Pee Wee moved on to CTI in New York and was producing and directing for the likes of Brother Jack McDuff, Esther Phillips and George Benson. In 1979 in California he caught the ear of Van Morrison and began a five year spell as Van’s MD/bandleader arranging the horns on albums such a Into the Music, and Common One. During the 1990’s Pee Wee moved to Europe and pursued a burgeoning solo career, releasing jazz albums including the critically acclaimed ‘12 and More Blues’. He also formed the JB Horns with ex James Brown alumni Maceo Parker and Fred Wesley, who toured widely to great acclaim.

Pee Wee rejoined Van Morrison as bandleader and arranger for five more highly successful years around this time. Meanwhile, his worldwide reputation had become apparent as musical stars from Africa and Cuba (including Oumou Sangare, Cheikh Lo, Ali Farke Touré and Buena Vista Social Club stars Cachaito Lopez and Anga Diaz) sought his distinctive sound for their recordings. Most recently he has arranged for and recorded with Boy George, Joss Stone, George Clinton and Paul Carrack.

Having led the spectacular ‘Still Black, Still Proud’ an African Tribute to James Brown in the early 2000’s and being a founder member of drumming legend Ginger Baker’s Jazz Confusion in 2015/16, currently Pee Wee is focusing on his own projects: his band The Pee Wee Ellis Assembly still tour worldwide, recently opening the Blue Note in Shanghai; he is working on his autobiography and an Anthology from his 50 year recording career.

In 2016 he launched the heritage project FUNK: Evolution of a Revolution, at NYU Performing Arts Center in Abu Dhabi, including the innovative masterclass FUNK 101, which has proved to be a great success from Abu Dhabi to Guadeloupe.

He is a regular contributor to educational programmes in schools, communities and universities – a fact recognised when he received an honorary doctorate in 2014, from Bath Spa University in the UK. He is also a Patron of and Artist in Residence at the Bristol Blues and Jazz Festival.

It has been a truly eventful musical life, and the signs are that Pee Wee Ellis has no intention of slowing down for a while yet, birthdays or no birthdays.

Fronted by saxophonist and composer Adam Waldmann and winners of MOBO Best Jazz Album 2011 Kairos 4Tet are one of a kind. Bridging the gap between classic and contemporary; the jazz idiom and the lineage of song, with ferocious grooves, burning improvisations and melodies they have become one of the UK jazz success stories. Following the release of their long awaited third album, they are joined by Swedish singer Emilia Mårtensson.

GILAD ATZMON – CHARLIE PARKER 100 Saturday 28 March | 5pm | St George’s | £22, £17, £12 + bf Alto Saxophonist, author and activist Gilad Atzmon is the perfect choice for this anniversary show celebrating be-bop pioneer Charlie Parker’s 100th birthday. The concert will focus on Parker’s beautiful series of recordings with strings from the early 1950s and features Atzmon’s celebrated quartet the Orient House Ensemble and the celebrated Sigamos String Quartet.

Saturday 28 March | 9pm | St George’s | £26, £22, £18 + bf It’s the mid-60s; Bossa Nova is at its height. All the big stars release albums featuring its sun-drenched rhythms; none bigger than Doris Day and Frank Sinatra. The first half of this special concert features recreations of Sinatra’s recordings with Bossa godfather Antonio Carlos Jobim, with Denny Ilett performing Frank’s role. The second half features Day’s 1965 album Latin For Lovers led by Clare Teal in front of a 35-piece orchestra.

Andy Hague’s rendition of Kind of Blue was a major highlight of our last Festival, and for 2020 he takes on Oliver Nelson’s 1961 album The Blues & The Abstract Truth. Originally featuring a stellar line up including Freddie Hubbard, Eric Dolphy, Bill Evans, Paul Chambers and Roy Haynes, Andy’s take on this seminal work will similarly feature contemporary jazz royalty.

Sunday 29 March | 5pm | St George’s £22, £17, £12 + bf Andy Sheppard is one of the few British Jazz musicians to have the rare honour of working with the most important contemporary American big band leaders/ composers Gil Evans, George Russell and Carla Bley.

It follows that Sheppard has often been inspired to create his own big band projects, most recently a commission by the Bergen Big Band for which he wrote Bump 5250. Featuring the cream of South West musicians, this will be the UK premiere of a big band suite that takes you through the ups and downs of falling in love.

After 5 years of countless gigs, parties, festivals and good times, Worm Disco Club have decided the right time has come to start up a record label. ‘Worm Discs’ will be launched in 2020 with the mission of providing a platform for fresh contemporary acts from around the UK to release their music on. The first of two consecutive nights at Fiddlers will be the ‘Worm Discs’ label launch party featuring three of their favourite artists from Bristol. Snazzback, Waldo’s Gift and Run Logan Run all on the same bill! This is set to be a special evening celebrating Bristol music.

The trio of Jackson, Jake and Nathan collectively DJ, promote and curate their shows, providing Bristol with some of the most exciting contemporary groove based acts around today. BRIGHT LIGHTS BIG CITY - A MUSICAL HISTORY OF URBAN BLUES Saturday 28 March | 3pm | Bristol Folk House | £15 + bf Our good friends (and experts in all things guitarrelated) at Guitarist and Guitar Techniques magazines have joined forces to produce this new show focusing on the period between the acoustic Delta Blues sound of the 1930s and the advent of Rock ’n’ Roll in the 1950s. This was the era of giants such as Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker and T-Bone Walker who harnessed the power of the then new-fangled guitar amplifier and literally changed the musical landscape forever. Guitarist editor-in-chief Jamie Dickson has previously produced shows for Bristol Jazz & Blues Festival honouring both Jimi Hendrix and Cream. This show takes us back to pay homage to the very artists that would have inspired both those acts and many others, as youngsters.

Saturday 28 March | 6 - 7:30pm | Bristol Folk House | £15 + bf Chris Corcoran is the guitarist’s guitarist! He is one of the UK’s finest blues and R&B musicians and has been performing across the UK and Europe for over 20 years. Chris’s unique brand of instrumental Jump Blues is an exciting, dynamic and completely original presence in this world where Rock-flavoured blues tends to be the order of the day. Corcoran’s 7-piece band, complete with horn section, has been described by Guitarist magazine as “our favourite players of vintage blues” and led Germany’s Blues News to comment “the best ‘Texan’ blues guitarist, at present, isn’t from Texas, but from England!”

GOODMANIA ’40 CELEBRATING BENNY GOODMAN Sunday 29 March | 1:30pm | Bristol Folk House | £15 + bf

Clarinetist/bandleader Pete Long is the director of the Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Orchestra and Echoes Of Ellington who performed Long’s celebrated Jazz Planets suite at Bristol Jazz and Blues festival in 2019. This time he presents the music of Benny Goodman’s legendary 1940 sextet. This particular Goodman group is famed also as it represents almost the entire recorded output of electric guitar pioneer Charlie Christian. Complete with piano, vibraphone, bass and drums the music they produced is joyous and swinging with tight interplay featuring throughout. Pete Long’s all-star group is the nearest we’ll ever get to actually being there when Goodman unleashed this infamous sextet on the musical world.

Sunday 29 March | 4:30pm | Bristol Folk House | £15 + bf New Orleans native and niece of the great Lillian Boutté, Tricia Boutté aka Sista Teedy is a formidable artist now resident in Norway where she travels throughout Europe and beyond spreading joy in a way only members of the Boutté family can do! Boutté is joined here by an all-star group of UK jazz and swing specialists such as Ian Bateman (trombone) and Adrian Cox (clarinet/saxophone) for a swinging romp through Boutté’s veritable ‘gumbo’ of musical influences from traditional Jazz classics via Blues and Gospel.

ADRIAN UTLEY PLAYS GRANT GREEN + ALBUCA

Sunday 29 March | 8pm | Bristol Folk House | £15 + bf Adrian Utley is a multi-talented guitarist, producer, composer and one of the founding members of iconic Bristol band Portishead. In this special show he’ll revisit his jazz roots in a celebration of Blue Note guitar legend Grant Green. The backing group features four of the UK’s leading jazz musicians in Mark Edwards, Ben Castle, Arnie Somogyi and Darren Beckett under their name of Albuca. Besides backing Utley, the group will also present music from their forthcoming Utley-produced album.

JUMP BLUES WITH CHRIS CORCORAN Saturday 28 March | 12 - 2pm | Bristol Folk House £20 + bf Referencing the big sound of ‘40s & ‘50s R&B guitar, this workshop will give a fresh perspective on how to add drive, style and invention to the modern Blues guitarist’s canon of licks. The course gives tips to hone your own playing including a nod to the likes of T-Bone Walker, Bill Jennings, Charlie Christian and BB King plus many lesser known but equally distinctive players. Studying these past masters will help to uncover a treasure trove of ideas for today’s guitarists.

TRICIA BOUTTÉ COOKERY WORKSHOP Sunday 29 March | 10 - 11:30am | Bristol Folk House | £5 + bf On top of being a world renowned vocalist, New Orleans’ own Tricia Boutté is a celebrated chef presenting a fun-and-fact filled masterclass focusing on her unique twists to classic New Orleans and Cajun recipes. Get a glimpse into the secret of delicious Southern States cuisine as Tricia demonstrates how to get the best from New Orleans ‘soul food’. Bring your notebooks and prepare to impress your family and friends with dishes born out of the Mississippi Delta!

JAZZ INSTRUMENTAL WORKSHOP Saturday 28 March | 2:30 - 4pm | Bristol Folk House | £8 + bf BACM is pleased to present an interactive instrumental jazz workshop led by the accomplished South West Pianist and BACM tutor, Tom Berge. The workshop will provide an insight into the art of jazz improvisation helping you to bring your craft to the next level. Instrumentalists of all ages and abilities are welcome or even if you just have a keen interest in jazz you are encouraged to join.

VOCAL WORKSHOP WITH LUCY MOON Saturday 28 March | 5 - 7pm | Bristol Folk House | £8 + bf Come and join Bristol-based jazz singer and BACM tutor Lucy Moon for an introduction to incorporating jazz phrasing into your voice. We’ll be exploring simple and wonderfully effective tools to shake up the delivery of a song and transform it into something unique to yourself. We’ll also work on expanding your vocal communication with the instruments on stage in order to lock in with the rhythm section and work together as one machine.

Suitable for singers of all levels.

JAZZ PIANO WORKSHOP Sunday 29 March | 11:30 am 1:30pm | Bristol Folk House £8 + bf BACM is pleased to present an interactive workshop, giving an insight into the different roles of the jazz pianist within a trio context, open to jazz pianists of all abilities or those who just have a keen interest! The workshop will be split into two parts. ‘Arranging’; Discussing the ways of presenting the melody through the use of phrasing, rhythm, harmonic and textural ideas. Exploring big band arranging and using this 34

tradition in a trio context (using shout choruses and rhythmic hits). Also repetition in arranging and getting the most out of the melodic material.

Secondly ‘Soloing tips’; Talk about the use of repetition in a solo to give form, talk about using short motifs in a solo. How to build a solo and ways to create tension (playing over the bar line). There will also be an opportunity for participants to perform at the end and for the group to critique.

PLAY WITH THE HOUSE BAND WORKSHOP Sunday 29 March | 2 - 4pm Bristol Folk House | Free An opportunity to play and interact with the BACM jazz tutors, Greg Sterland and Federico Leonori. For an afternoon, be part of the band in a non judgmental and supportive environment where jazz musicians of all abilities are welcome. Throughout the session the tutors will be offering practical tips and suggestions on how to improve your skills.

WHAT IS BACM? BACM is a new independent music school founded by Bristol musicians Federico Leonori & Greg Sterland.

The aim is to provide community driven education from top quality tutors at affordable prices. The Academy offers a wide range of group classes, workshops and ensembles ranging from Jazz, Songwriting, Vocals, Drums & Percussion, Guitar, Piano and Music Therapy.

BAMBALAN JAM SESSIONS

Friday 27, Saturday 28, Sunday 29 March | 10:30pm | Bambalan | Free Every year, when the final notes of the last concert of the day are being played... the Festival Jam Session kicks off at the wonderful Bambalan Restaurant across from Colston Hall on Colston Street.

The Jam Sessions have become an integral part of the Jazz Festival and fill this Cafe Bar with musicians waiting to have their turn to get up and play with the incredibly talented local Jam Session house band.

The space packs out with Festival goers keen to hear the amazing Bristol jazz musicians share the stage with some of the Festivals international stars. It’s a friendly and vibrant scene that starts at 10:30pm every night of the Festival.

There is food served until midnight and you never know who you might run into or get a chance to see play.

We are excited to announce that Bambalan will be hosting our first day of the much loved free stage, filled with both a variety of live music from Bristol and beyond, as well as DJs on their outdoor terrace. Kick off the final day of the Festival with a laid back jazz brunch. For £25 you’ll be able to enjoy live music and a delicious cooked breakfast, complete with breakfast cocktails (Bloody Mary, anyone?) Running from 10 - 1pm, this will be the perfect warm up before an afternoon of free music at Colston Hall.

To round off the Festival we’ll be throwing our official after party at Bambalan. Starting from 10:30pm and running late into the night.

Catch musicians from across the weekend’s programme performing live on the stage, as always you’ll be able to enjoy great food and drinks all evening and might even get to meet some of the stars.

The Bristol Community Big Band is a big, loud and energetic local ensemble of talented amateur jazz musicians, who’ve been playing together since 2013. Band leader and local trumpet legend, Jonny Bruce, injects the band with huge energy, passion and love for the ‘big band sound’. They bring to life a delightful repertoire of classic swing, jazz and Latin big band numbers, from Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman, to Count Basie and Dizzy Gillespie.

Eastwood, who picked up a Golden Globe for Best Director for the film, offers an honest understanding of Bird’s ground breaking talents and his shortcomings - as well as painting a vivid scene of the wider jazz world and Bird’s place in it.

With a stellar cast which includes Diane Venora (Heat), who along with Whitaker was nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance in this picture, Bill Cobbs (Night at the Museum), John Witherspoon (TV’s The Wayans Bros.) and Tony Cox (Bad Santa), Bird is a valuable biography charting the genius and tragedy of one of the greatest pioneers of jazz.

The central theme of Miles Davis’s life was his restless determination to break boundaries and live life on his own terms, it made him a star. For the people who loved him most, it also made him incredibly difficult to live with. Again and again, in music and in life, Miles broke with convention— and when he thought his work came to represent a new convention, he changed it again.

An innovator in music, from bebop to “cool jazz,” modern quintets, orchestral music, jazz fusion, rock ’n’ roll, and even hip-hop, Davis’ bold disregard for tradition, clarity of vision, relentless drive, and constant thirst for new experiences made him an inspiring collaborator to fellow musicians and a cultural icon to generations of listeners.

Bristol Jazz and Blues Festival is more than just a collection of concerts, it’s a community of musicians, friends, supporters, partners, volunteers and a small dedicated team of workers and that is what makes it such a special Festival.
