POLICE, CRIME AND ANTI - SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR UPDATE

ISSUE 87: 11 APRIL – 15 MAY 2024

CRIME STATS

Over the last month, reported crime has increased from 622 to 696. This month has seen a slight decrease in cases of theft, from 267 down to 262, with an increase in public

order offences, burglary, and vehicle offences. As always, the police encourage everyone to report any criminal activity witnessed.

AN UPDATE FROM THE STREET INTERVENTION SERVICE

Over the last month, the Street Intervention Service (SIS) has been working to prevent an individual from prolific begging and antisocial behaviour (ASB) in the city. This individual was offered the relevant support available but continued to breach their Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO). This led to their arrest where they are now awaiting sentencing.

The team offer relevant support to individuals to assist with rehabilitation, prevent further ASB from taking place, and protect the local community.

The SIS team would like to thank all businesses and employees who attended the ‘Be Streetwise’ training at Watershed on 26 March 2024. The training was positive for those who attended and allowed businesses to ask questions directly to the Streetwise team and understand how they work.

The Street Intervention Service is excited to work with the BID in the future to host further training sessions to support businesses. Please get in touch with the BID to register your interest.

PROLIFIC SHOPLIFTER JAILED

Police have arrested a prolific city centre shoplifter this month after the individual targeted several stores in Cabot Circus.

In April, the individual was arrested three times over a two-week period where they accumulated over 30 offences. The individual was also in breach of their Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO), which included an exclusion zone of Cabot Circus shops.

Following their arrest, the individual has been remanded in court. An application will be heard at their next court appearance to enforce a stricter exclusion zone of the city centre.

Over the last month, police have worked with the stores in question and their security teams. The team would like to thank them for their cooperation in helping to gather evidence of these offences promptly to put before the court.

COUNTERFEIT GOODS IN CITY CENTRE

The Bridewell Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) has been working to protect shoppers from unlicensed street traders selling counterfeit goods in the city centre.

Products such as fragrances are being sold in the city centre, branded with imitation labels and known to contain harmful chemicals. Despite looking and smelling similar, these fragrances fade quickly and can be a risk to your health.

Police understand that buying cheaper goods can be tempting, however, police are urging everyone to be cautious of counterfeit sellers and to only purchase goods from genuine businesses.

If you have any information relating to any counterfeit sellers in the city, including information about their vehicles or transport, please report online.

AN UPDATE FROM PCSO, NAT NAYLO R

“Recently, I have been working with several stores in the city relating to increased shop thefts. I would like to thank all involved stores who completed their CCTV and follow-up statements in a timely manner, leading to a positive outcome of the arrest of an individual.

If your business is experiencing theft, please report online. Alternatively, if you are not already registered for DiSC, I encourage you to get in touch and sign up to the platform. DiSC is a helpful tool that allows businesses to stay up to date with prolific offenders and can help to identify individuals who may be causing issues for your business. DiSC also allows you to view and submit incident and intelligence reports regarding low-level crime and antisocial behaviour.

With warmer days upon us, this is bringing an increase in footfall to the city. These warmer days can lead to an increase in antisocial behaviour, street drinking, and begging. If your business is facing issues relating to ASB, please report online or call 101. If the issue escalates and an immediate threat is present, please call 999.

If you would like to arrange a meeting with me, please get in touch with the BID and I will be happy to visit your business and offer my support.

I hope you all take care and enjoy the start of the sunshine.”
