IN CONVERSATION WITH PAUL BARCLAY
Tim Rogers sits down with Paul Barclay to reflect on his life, his career in music and his recently published memoir Detours, an offbeat and immensely charming literary memoir. As one of Australia’s most enduring rock legends, Rogers is a contradiction: a harddrinking rock star with the soul of a poet; a wordsmith and a raconteur, a romantic and a realist, a bon vivant and a loner.
The evening promises to be by turns revealing, warm, self-deprecating, intimate, shocking, confessional, sharp, funny and immensely engaging. Tim Rogers will be signing copies of Detours on the evening.

MUSICAL THEATRE 09
The Last Five Years Wax Lyrical Productions are bringing Jason Robert Brown’s acclaimed 2001 musical, The Last Five Years, to Brisbane with a duo of music theatre heavy-weights. It’s easy to fall in love with Kurt Phelan (Dirty Dancing) and Lizzie Moore (Kiss Me Kate) in this heart-breaking musical twohander, as they re-trace their relationship from opposite ends. Jamie (Phelan), an up-and-coming writer, struggles to balance his sudden success with his increasingly tumultuous love life.
Meanwhile Cathy (Moore), an aspiring actress, deals with the frustrations of her own career while watching her husband from the sidelines in this story of two twenty-somethings who fall in – and out – of love over the course of a five-year relationship. From the director and company behind the Matilda Award Winning Carrie the Musical, Wax Lyrical’s The Last Five Years is an intensely personal look at the rise and fall of a relationship told from both points of view.

THE STORY OF CHINA’S MOST RADICAL EXPERIMENT MEI FONG IN CONVERSATION WITH MICHELLE LAW
Join an extraordinary conversation with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, Mei Fong.
of China’s descent towards economic and societal turmoil, Fong reveals the true cost of this most controversial of policies.
For over three decades, China exercised unprecedented control over the reproductive habits of its billion citizens. Now, with its economy faltering, just as it seemed poised to become the largest in the world, the Chinese government has brought an end to its one-child policy.
Drawing on eight years of documenting its repercussions, Fong reveals a dystopian legacy of second children refused documentation by the state, only children supporting their parents and grandparents, and villages filled with ineligible bachelors.

NOT JUST LUCKY: A CAREER MANIFESTO FOR AUSTRALIAN WOMEN
Join Jamila Rizvi for an intimate and revealing evening with ABC Radio’s Rebecca Levingston discussing the confidence deficit Jamila has identified as holding women back in Australia’s gendered workplaces. Too often women who have overcome the societal, cultural and structural barriers in place for women in the workplace, put their hard-earned success down to ‘luck’ rather than claiming credit for it. Rizvi's new book Not Just Lucky is here to give women the confidence to realise this ‘ good luck’ is actually down to their hard work, talent and drive. Drawing on case studies, extensive research and her own experience, Rizvi lays out the causes holding women back and the tools they need to truly thrive in the workplace. She’s on hand for advice on how to negotiate a better salary, overcome the dreaded imposter syndrome, speak with confidence, ignore the nasty inner voice that tells you you’re not quite good enough, and deal with failure when it comes. IN CONVERSATION WITH PAUL BARCLAY
Dava Sobel, former New York Times science reporter and long-time science contributor to Harvard Magazine, Audubon, Discover, Life, Omni, and The New Yorker, sits down with Paul Barclay to share a captivating yet little-known true story of a group of remarkable women who changed astronomical history. Sobel’s latest book The Glass Universe is the hidden history of a group of remarkable women whose contributions to the burgeoning field of astronomy forever changed our understanding of the stars and our place in the universe.
In the 19th century, Harvard College Observatory began employing women as calculators (or ‘human computers’) to interpret the observations their male counterparts made via telescope each night. These women changed the history of astronomy, making extraordinary discoveries that attracted worldwide acclaim: they helped discern what stars are made of and how to categorize them, as well as found a way to measure distances across space by starlight.

Part oration, part audience exchange; enjoy an evening with this extraordinary philosopher and humanist for an energising perspective on democracy and its crisis, inspired by recent world events in the UK, US, Middle East, Russia and Latin America. Democracy was described by Winston Churchill as ‘the least bad of all systems.’ So it is, when it works. But it is being made to fail (notice those words: ‘made to fail’) in some of its leading examples in today’s world.
Grayling investigates how democracy is being made to fail and provides some positive insights into how to put it right. A.C. Grayling will be signing copies of Democracy and Its Crisis on the evening.

Kitty Flanagan SMASHING
Love songs, sex, algorithms, chimps, clowns and psychics – everything is getting “smashed”. Smashing. It’s fun, and learning. Leave the kids at home unless you fancy them getting a real Flanagan style education. As one of Australia’s best-known comedians, Flanagan has played all over the world and now tours Australia relentlessly. Flanagan is a writer and performer, and
can be seen as herself on The Weekly with Charlie Pickering (ABC) and not as herself in the Working Dog series, Utopia (ABC). Her favourite food is soup, closely followed by fried potatoes of any kind. She lives in Sydney with her dog Henry, her cat Sarge and a lovely Magnolia tree called Mary. Flanagan hopes to one day develop some skills, get an education and find a real job.

The Arrival
ADAPTED FROM THE AWARD WINNING BOOK BY SHAUN TAN An emotionally moving piece that will resound with anyone who has felt out-of-place or lost.
Australia’s flagship puppetry company, Spare Parts Puppet Theatre brings to life acclaimed illustrator/author Shaun Tan’s award-winning book, The Arrival. A truly warm and magical experience, The Arrival is a universal tale of the challenges, humour and adventures of arriving in a new country. Inspired by stories told by migrants from many different countries, including Tan’s father
who came to Australia from Malaysia in 1960, The Arrival follows Aki, a man who finds himself in a foreign country where he must find a place to live, food to eat and some kind of employment. Spare Parts Puppet Theatre weaves exceptional acting and the exquisite puppetry to bring Tan’s fantastical world to life. Audiences will experience a strange and wonderful metropolis full of floating ships, mysterious lights, alien symbols and weird animals.

The Story of Brisbane Come on a walk around Brisbane Powerhouse with award-winning actors Therese Collie and Tim Mullooly as they tell the fascinating story of Brisbane as captured in the words of its great writers– from Steele Rudd to David Malouf, from the defining poetry of Oodgeroo Noonuccal to the songs of The Go-Betweens and more!
Accompany Therese and Tim as they transform themselves into a variety of characters from the works of writers past and present, well known and less well known. Witty, enthusiastic and steeped in Brisbane cultural knowledge, Therese and Tim happily veer off into subjects that wouldn’t be covered by the city’s tourist brochures.
Against the backdrop of the Brisbane River and with Brisbane Powerhouse at the heart of the narrative, The Story of Brisbane is packed with anecdote, humour and information as it celebrates the many wondrous ways writers have seen our city.
Soak up the atmosphere of Brisbane Powerhouse and gain a unique insight into the way of life of Brisbane people: from its original Indigenous inhabitants to the European convicts and free settlers, through wars and
depression to the jump and jive of the 1950s, the flowering of the 60s, the protests of the 70s and up to the present day. Walk it. Live it. Love it. Be part of the story. PRESENTED BY BRISBANE POWERHOUSE DATE
