Brisbane Festival, the Festival Board, and the Indigenous Advisory Group continue to build a festival that expresses its respect for and acknowledgement of the various Traditional Owners and Custodians of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander lands and waterways. Our respects extend to the local and neighbouring Communities where the works are performed and celebrated across Brisbane areas. We acknowledge their continuing connection to land and waters and honour the Elders past and present.

We recognise the fundamental role that Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islander people continue to play in creative events and celebrations, as well as the importance of our continued engagement with the Indigenous Advisory Group and First Nations Communities. We are committed to the development of opportunities for further growing the various Cultural performances across the Festival.

Brisbane Festival and the Indigenous Advisory Group will continue to embrace, engage, and collaborate in partnership towards a progressive future.

As we look ahead to Brisbane 2032 and beyond, Brisbane Festival continues to put Queensland in the spotlight as a creative powerhouse and significant cultural destination.

I encourage you to immerse yourself in this year’s extraordinary program.

The Queensland Government is proud to support Brisbane Festival through Tourism and Events Queensland’s Major Events program, a key driver of our outstanding $1 billion Queensland Events Calendar for 2025.

The Festival offers a true taste of Queensland’s vibrant spirit and contributes to our growing reputation as the premier destination for world-class entertainment and unforgettable visitor experiences.

It wouldn’t be September without Brisbane Festival bringing so much to see and do to our suburbs.

As the lifestyle capital of Australia, Brisbane has incredible stories to tell about its people and heritage, which are brought to life in this month-long celebration.

Our organisers have worked tirelessly to bring you an amazing showcase of our thriving arts scene and fireworks.

Welcome to Brisbane Festival 2025

When I began creating this year’s Brisbane Festival, I hadn’t intended it to be my last. As with every festival I have had the privilege to direct alongside our team, I set out to create something unforgettable, filled with defining moments that linger in our hearts and minds. Now, as I present my sixth and final Brisbane Festival, I am more determined than ever to bring this city to life through art, joy, and fearless creativity.

My passion for being Boldly Brisbane has always been my guiding light. From navigating the challenges of the COVID years to introducing ambitious initiatives such as Street Serenades and The Art Boat, Brisbane itself has been my muse — a city reimagined as a stage, alive with possibility.

As I look back on this extraordinary chapter, I do so with immense pride and deep emotion. These years have been marked by bold ambition, creative risk-taking, and a profound love for this festival and its community. It has been an honour to co-lead this remarkable organisation with my dear friend Charlie Cush, supported by an exceptional Board led by Chair Anna Reynolds and Deputy Chair Philip Bacon AO. With the cultural wisdom of our Indigenous Advisory Group, the generosity of our Giving Committee, and the boundless energy of our festival team, we have dared to dream big — and together, turned the impossible into reality.

We have seen exponential growth, forged deeper connections with our audiences, and redefined what it means to be Boldly Brisbane.

The 2025 Festival positions Brisbane not just as a host city, but as the stage itself. We transform theatres, parks, streets, rooftops — and everything in between — into vibrant arenas where art meets place, and audiences are invited into moments that are bright and electric, raw and revelatory.

Local creative giants Craig & Karl will transform three of the city’s key bridges with ANZ’s Walk This Way, a kaleidoscopic installation celebrating our river city. Stephen Page’s monumental Baleen Moondjan will illuminate the river with an awe-inspiring performance set in an installation of whale bones created by Jacob Nash, as night falls and magic rises.

Last year, we bridged Brisbane and Paris — two Olympic and Paralympic host cities. This year, we connect with Los Angeles, our sister city on the global stage. We welcome L.A. Dance Project, led by ballet icon Benjamin Millepied, who brings his exquisite work Gems to Brisbane in an Australian exclusive.

At the Twelfth Night Theatre, we’ll throw a party to remember with GATSBY at the Green Light, breathing new life into a beloved Brisbane stage.

Our commitment to local luminaries will shine again. We celebrate the power and grace of three of Australia’s finest female choreographers — Marilyn Miller, Katina Olsen, and Jasmin Sheppard — with Preparing Ground. Shake & Stir return with The Lovers, a pop-infused, high-voltage take on A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Australasian Dance Collective brings us Bad Nature, an ambitious international collaboration. And we welcome back Queensland’s own William Yang, performing Milestone with the incomparable Camerata – Queensland's Chamber Orchestra.

At Brisbane Festival HQ, we are preparing one mighty hurrah — an epic celebration filled with love, bravery, and passion. A program that marks the close of this beautiful chapter and opens the door to a bold new future for Brisbane Festival.

To our government shareholders, with a personal thanks to the Arts Minister through Arts Queensland and the Lord Mayor and Brisbane City Council, to our corporate partners and treasured donors — thank you. Your faith and support have been the bedrock of our success.

And to the artists: you are the soul of this festival. Without you, none of this exists.

Here’s to Brisbane Festival — what a magnificent creature you are.

HIGHLIGHTS

The Dancing City City Spectacles The Shape of 2025

HIGHLIGHTS

Awakening in spring, Brisbane Festival transforms the city into a stage — a celebration of dynamic contrasts, where sunshine draws shadows from brutalist concrete, the river shimmers in technicolour, and joy illuminates both historical and contemporary spaces.

For the 2025 program, bold and dynamic art duo Craig & Karl have explored these characteristics, developing a series of artworks and abstract forms that embody the essence of Brisbane Festival.

More than a festival, we’re a gathering place — a space where art, culture, and community collide. We believe in breaking down barriers and ensuring our festival is truly for everyone. Inclusive and accessible, we create moments that unite, inviting people from all backgrounds to share in joy, discovery, and connection. Here is your guide to Brisbane Festival 2025.

The city is our stage, with a kaleidoscopic takeover of bridges, the winding river, and City Botanic Gardens, transforming everyday spaces into breathtaking stages for art. We begin our cultural connection with Los Angeles — future Olympic and Paralympic host cities — as L.A. Dance Project brings boundary-pushing expression to our city.

International art and design duo Craig Redman and Karl Maier came of age in 1980s Australia, immersed in a world of bold, bright, and unapologetically lurid colour. It was an era that sparked a lifelong fascination with colour, which continues to define their work today.

Their creative bond began at Brisbane’s Queensland College of Art and Design, Griffith University — currently celebrating its 50th anniversary — where their complementary perspectives and distinctive personalities naturally evolved into a dynamic collaboration.

Now based in New York and London, Craig & Karl have exhibited globally, known for their vibrant, multidisciplinary works — from a striking New York Magazine cover featuring Barack Obama to a sculpture honouring film director Michelangelo Antonioni. Their unmistakable aesthetic has attracted collaborations with leading global brands including Nike, Apple, Google, Vogue, and LVMH.

In 2025, the iconic duo return to Brisbane to unveil their most ambitious project yet — set to transform the city with their signature pop art sensibility and riot of vivid colour.

L.A. DANCE PROJECT | BENJAMIN MILLEPIED (US)

The groundbreaking contemporary ballet trilogy shared in full for the first time.

A landmark Australian exclusive and world premiere, Gems by Benjamin Millepied is presented in its entirety for the first time at Brisbane Festival. This bold contemporary ballet by L.A. Dance Project, in collaboration with Van Cleef & Arpels, reimagines George Balanchine’s revolutionary trilogy Jewels through a modern lens.

Each chapter Reflections, Hearts & Arrows, and On the Other Side serves as a contemporary counterpoint to Balanchine’s Rubies, Emeralds, and Diamonds, forming a dazzling triptych of distinct works, each inspired by the brilliance and character of its namesake gem.

This program of works features a live score by Camerata – Queensland's Chamber Orchestra and pianist Yanfeng (Tony) Bai from the Colburn School, an internationally renowned L.A. performing arts school. Twelve years in the making, Gems is finally brought together in an unforgettable Brisbane exclusive dance event.

“L.A. Dance Project has been making an argument for Los Angeles as a center of dance innovation.”

The New Yorker

Reflections

The first chapter, Reflections, was conceived as a true artistic collaboration between Benjamin Millepied, composer David Lang, and iconic visual artist Barbara Kruger.

Hearts & Arrows

Hearts & Arrows pulses with the energy of Philip Glass’s composition Mishima, sharpened by Liam Gillick’s striking design. The New York Times described it as “a propulsive, kinetic stream of movement.”

On the Other Side

The trilogy concludes with On the Other Side, set to a suite of piano études by Philip Glass and delivering a visually lush and emotive finale.

Anxious clown Spencer Novich (American Horror Story, Cirque du Soleil) takes you on an absurd, hyper-physical ego trip deep into the bowels of his psyche.

This twisted, serio-comic journey wrestles with the inner critic — complete with naked balloon nightmares, shock-collar surprises, and eight-hour enemas. Will he break free, or spiral deeper into the noise?

“Clown Spencer Novich is genuinely, outrageously funny.”

The Natural Horse

T. ADAMSON

Absurd, explosive, and painfully familiar.

The Natural Horse is a dark comedy about power, family, and how far we’ll go to maintain a myth. A family of ex-Soviet immigrants struggle to maintain their relationships after their eldest daughter adopts a feral horse named Goodboy into their comfortable suburban home. From award-winning indie company Salad Days Collective, this debut Australian season gallops onto the stage with guts, grime, and glitter.

BATSHIT

LEAH SHELTON

Wildly theatrical, darkly comic, deeply intimate... “dangerously mad”.

Back by popular demand and fresh from an award-winning run at Edinburgh Fringe, psycho-siren Leah Shelton returns with her acclaimed dark comedy BATSHIT, directed by Ursula Martinez.

A theatrical gut punch inspired by her grandmother’s incarceration for seeking independence in 1960s Australia, this one-woman tour de force tears apart the labels used to control and undermine women through razor-sharp wit, raw storytelling, and unflinching performance.

“Moving and thought-provoking visual theatre that’s also terrific fun.”

If you would like to become involved with the Giving Program by making a donation to Brisbane Festival, please contact Director of Partnerships and Philanthropy Fabienne Cooke via philanthropy@brisbanefestival.com.au.
