Director’s Note

Different audiences tend to characterise my work as either Dance or Theatre or something between the two.
Whatever form the work seems to be to you is simply the result of me finding a space that feels creatively interesting, authentic and uniquely my own. For me, dance is a mystery. An amorphous, ambiguous, ephemeral language brimming with potential and wholly reliant on how it’s used within a wider theatrical experience. For me dance creates a puzzle, a collage, a poem—a sequence of highly expressive but seemingly unconnected images and actions; this puzzle is contextualized in the world of the work and presented to the audience as a riddle to solve.

Volcano is another type of riddle, another mystery. A four-part non-linear narrative borrowing the structure of a Television mini-series. The narrative is pieced together through a collection of clues and reveals. Every element visually and verbally contributes to and relates back to the central story.
The closer you look the more there is to see. In a world both nonsensical and strangely familiar, Volcano invites the audience to solve the puzzle, to connect the dots and to find the meaning. Born from an unprecedented time, Volcano uses a palimpsest of movement, theatre, film, nostalgia and raw vulnerability to explore what we hold onto and what we leave behind.
