Hello!

I am Brinda Taxali, a fresh graduate from Aayojan School of Architecture and Design, Pune, passsionate about interdisciplinary designs. Throughout my academic career, I have developed a keen interest in user-experience design, exploring form and material, context based designs, documentation, illustrations and technical detailing.

I am curious to know how the practical constraints of the field can use my skillset whilst expanding my practical knowledge in the field of architecture.

Housing has always been a part of an ever evolving urban structure. Housing needs or requirements have typically grown out of the prevailing social, economic and technological advances or environments. Currently, cities are evolving at an unprecedented pace. This rapid urban growth, combined with a tech - driven, fast and service - intensive lifestyle, has led us to look and explore various fronts; and address the issue of relevance of housing patterns within cities for the future generations. An architectural model for housing which in sync with the current environment, is socially equitable, and is for the new generation, which is for all and which can adapt for the future generations and continue to remain relevant.

When independence was declared at the stroke of midnight, two nations were born on 14th/15th August 1947, where, on one hand people were celebrating the joy of freedom on the other hand the celebrations were overshadowed by one of the most dramatic and massive human displacement along with loss of life. It is considered one of the largest and most violent mass migrations in human history– the India-Pakistan Partition

What happens when you are rendered penniless and homeless overnight?

People who witnessed it or were subjected to it were left traumatized, helpless, and uprooted from their homelands to an unfamiliar land where they had to rebuild their lives from scratch and fight their way to establish themselves. The mass displacement of people across the subcontinent resulted in millions of refugees settling in provinces and cities to which they had no prior connections — neither of family, culture nor language.

Water in this space, resonates with its characteristics - continuity of fluid inspite of obstacles and no stagnation.

The wires running in between the blocks represent the chaos due to overpopulation in the city.

Narrower paths have been created so people can move one after the another forming a trail.

Circles represent movement on wheels and the bullock carts, train, cycle, car - these helped people to keep moving ahead.

The curved panels have been placed in such a manner that they create a path for people to explore through defined or undefined path

The ramp has been narrowed down, with limited light before being exposed to an open space.

The curved shape has been given to the structure, providing a directional path for movement to adjacent space.

Elements- windows similar to train, ramps getting narrower as moving upwards and dummies of people laying on the floor in haphazard manner and the number increases as we move forward

The walls of the space painted deep red, depicting the massive bloodshed and starting from one point to another through multiple routes. A game of maze

From this point, it can be seen how long the line has been stretched and running like parallel lines, which are getting away from each other.

The well's depth has been depicted through spiral ramps which narrow down as we move in downward direction (walking cautiously while moving forward and cut-out in between dark room acting as an escape route)

Two curves placed opposite to each other, spaces flowing into each other and creating a gathering space in between.

A narrow skylight allowing only limited light to enter. Use of different materials for flooring from polished surfaces to broken bricks From free flowing curves to defined circles the form of the the space changes.

The punctures in wall throughout allows natural light to penetrate creating a silent peaceful zone.

The KHIRKI mosque is one of the earlier examples of mosques wherein instead of a single open-to-sky courtyard it is divided into four small courtyards. It has lost its importance or individuality with course of time, due to development of urban village along its periphery known as KHIRKI village. In addition to it, the dense maze of narrow streets will eventually lead to such an architectural marvel is unpredictable. Being the focal point of this village, it holds importance for the community living there, but as an individual structure has lost its identity. Overall, the village and the mosque stand secluded from its vicinity.

With the increasing demand for green buildings, it is vital to understand the right approach towards constructing such structures that would minimize the detrimental impacts of construction on the planet, while creating a healthy and comfortable living/working environment with zero or minimal incremental cost.A green building has lower resource consumption as compared to conventional buildings, while enhancing the overall health and well-being of the users. There are a number of tangible and intangible benefits offered by green buildings. Green buildings consume 40% to 60% (depending on the range of measures adopted) lesser electricity as compared to conventional buildings.

During my 6-month internship at Studio Search, Ahmedabad. I thrived as an intern under the guidance of Senior Architect overseeing a few diverse projects. This period gathered me experience of executing the drawings on the site and learning how to deal with labourers, the many factors which one has to keep in mind while proposing the design, to drafting, visualising in 3D, to execution. Alongside, exploring the city on weekends - the rich heritage of Ahmedabad, stepwells and structures designed by Ar. B.V Doshi. The BRTS, being an easy way to commute and giving city tour.

Water required for daily chores per person per day (plus 1 day reserve)as per nbc norms = 150 LTS.

No. of persons considered = 6

Total water required =150 x 6 = 900 litres (capacity of OHT)

Water stored in UGT is twice of OHT= 900 x 2 = 1800 = 1.8 cu.m

Dimensions for the underground water tank:

Length = 1

Breadth = 0.90

Depth = 1.80 (1.5 + 0.3 for free flow)
