MAKING A DIFFERENCE Designing inclusive and diverse soft wearable technologies Thursday, June 2, 10:00 am Dr. Cindy Hsin-Liu Kao,Assistant Professor in Human Centered Design We are pleased to announce our next speaker series session with Cindy Hsin-Liu Kao. We are looking forward to welcoming Dr. Kao to share her unique work designing on-skin interfaces (i.e., smart tattoos and bandages), electronic textiles in HumanComputer Interaction and Wearable projects that blend art, science, and engineering boundaries.

SCHOOL MAKER FAIRE New Brunswick was the host of 2 school Maker Faires in May. We held our first one at École Marguerite Bourgeoys, Caraquet where we hosted over 300 young makers who shared their projects. During the event, students and teachers tried hands on sessions, witness a morphing matter demonstration and visited over 50 project displays from different schools.

We hosted our 2nd Maker Faire in Millidgeville where students from the Greater Saint John area got to try their hands at soldering while also taking the opportunity to watch bioplastics demonstrations.

INNOVATIVE EDUCATORS' GALA During the month of May, Brilliant Labs has recognized the creative work of 18 innovative educators, at 3 different teacher celebration galas!

INSPIRATION MAKERS

This year Brilliant Labs is looking for those teachers who inspire others to be their best and who are taking chances to try new things to educate students. We're pleased to share this New Brunswick "Inspiration Maker!"

Name: Dan Goggin School: Gibson-Neill Memorial Elementary School Twitter handle: @GNMES_News Mr. Goggin’s Grade 2/3 French Immersion class is a flurry of activity.

In the past few months, students have created their own virtual Olympic facilities in Minecraft, used a 3D printer to bring their idea of a NB Ecosystem to life and have just begun their largest project yet: A Lifesize, 3D Printed, Custom Chess Set.They challenged Brilliant Labs to use their largest 3D printers to help them make their chess pieces, but they are modeling the top of each of the pieces in playdough, then scanning their sculptures to digitally add them to their print.

Great performance by NB teams at the Quebec final of the Défi Géni Inventif Inventif École de technologie supérieure de Montréal.

Just imagine! Creating a catapult capable of launching tennis balls to reach various targets such as a pizza sheet, a milk carton, a can, a cardboard box and a water can at different heights and distances? It takes design thinking, ingenuity, creativity and perseverance.

Yes, it's quite a challenge that these young people were able to meet with confidence, precision and brilliance.

On May 27 and 28, the Quebec final of the DGI-ÉTS was held in Montreal. Teams from Quebec as well as New Brunswick and Ontario had the opportunity to test their catapults in this great competition.

Two teams from NB took first place in the out-of-province category: Philippe Martin and Gabriel Bossé (7th-8th) from École Communautaire St-Joseph with their "Sling IV" catapult, and the high school team of Pierre-Paul Thériault, Anthony Friolet and William FrioletAlbert from Polyvalente Louis Mailloux with their "Champions" catapult. Miguel Blanchard, Samuel Lanteigne and Justin Hébert from Polyvalente Louis Mailloux "Migmagie" came in 2nd place, and Joel and Mike Côté from Polyvalente Thomas Albert in Grand Falls - "Les Jumeaux" took the 2nd place B final. Congratulations to all of you!
