In the ongoing quest for perfection, the marble was selected at the quarry by experts from Bufalini Marmi, then cut and pre-assembled in Italy to guarantee uniformity of colour and vein. From the moment of its conception, the creation of One Sandy Lane has been undertaken with a rare determination to achieve the pinnacle of excellence in every aspect of its completion. The team that fashioned One Sandy Lane has paid minute attention to detail and utilised the very finest materials from around the world, along with exclusive designs and custom-made architectural features. For example, the elegant white pewter and iron balustrades that grace the magnificent spiral staircase and are found throughout the property have all been manufactured by Les Ateliers St. Jacques of Paris. This eminent French company is renowned throughout the world for executing exceptional renovations of historic buildings, most notably the Palace of Versailles. The balustrades have been entirely made by hand and they are unique to One Sandy Lane. The many beautifully curved and vaulted ceilings are made of traditional French ‘staff’, which is a very special mixture of Plaster of Paris and fibres that can form designs of any shape. In order to deliver the very highest quality, E. G. Deco of Monaco actually set up and operated a complete workshop inside the property for some two years. The impressive architecture of One Sandy Lane embraces traditional tropical features such as expansive verandas, timber posts and the use of coral stone. The Barbadian coral stone, carved and shaped by local craftsmen, provides a complementary match for the superb quality Italian marble that is used throughout the building. ST PETERS BAY – THE FACTS Property prices at St. Peters Bay start from $1.95m for a three bedroom residence rising to upwards of $7.75m for a deluxe, four-bed penthouse with with a 970 sq. ft. private roof terrace with a pool, additional dining and barbecue area. Tennis Elite Contest Barbados Dream Cup Championship For decades Barbados has been enjoyed as a respite for the jet-set lured by the island’s tropical beauty, turquoise waters and relaxed attitude that provides a haven from the bright lights and fast-lane of fame and fortune. Perhaps beguiled by the island’s charms, Barbados is now also attracting some of the best tennis players in the world to compete in an audacious tournament challenge garnering global attention. November 2013’s Dream Cup was contested by Andy Murray (4), Juan Martin Del Potro (5), Richard Gasquet (10) and Nicholas Almagro (13 ) in what was one of the most unique and intimate settings to see such a clash of top-class talent in a competitive event, almost unparalleled in professional tennis circles.

The 2013 Dream Cup was a showdown between impressive tennis blue-bloods, however, Barbados insiders will know that this is not the first time that top calibre players have graced the island’s Sir Garfield Sobers Gymnasium stadium. In fact, The Dream Cup has emerged from a series of fund-raising exhibition matches organized in 2010 and 2011. The inaugural Dream Cup 2013 Men’s singles semi-finals (a best of three set format) took place on Friday 29 November at the Sir Garfield Sobers Gymnasium followed by the Dream Cup final on Saturday. Alternating annually, The Dream Cup will feature a Ladies singles tennis tournament in 2014.

Janice Sylvia Brock

Janice Sylvia Brock has been a professional artist for over 40 years, producing a truly remarkable body of work. Primarily working with traditional oils on canvas, she has become one of the most exciting painters of our time. Renowned worldwide, there are even two Brocks hanging in the White House, and Saatchi recently held a very successful Brock exhibition. After experiencing a traumatic period due to her severe childhood arthritis, Brock chose to defy her physicians' gloomy predictions of a short life with little prospects by focusing on her sheer lust for living and all things beautiful. Her grit, determination and boundless optimistic spirit combined with her amazing natural artistic talent have resulted in Brock becoming one of the world's favourite artists.

Brock is a master of colour and form. The vibrant hues, the sense of movement, the free style, the sometimes offbeat treatment of subjects, imbue her paintings with a joie de vivre. Her work has been likened to that of Matisse; like him, Brock will approach a new canvas without the aid of sketches, photographs or preliminary outlines. From the first stroke of colour laid onto the virgin canvas, her brush strokes are utterly confident, and this is evident in the result: works which resonate with life, sensuality, and humour. The diversity of Brock's creativity is literally breathtaking - although she works mainly in oils, she will occasionally work in other media to get the effect she needs.

The ultimate survivor, Brock's life-force seems boundless despite the many huge challenges that life has thrown at her. Barbados and the UK. In recognition for her extensive charitable work, Brock was recently invited to meet Her Majesty the Queen at Buckingham Palace. Brock's vibrant paintings are keenly sought after by discerning collectors worldwide. These few samples are but a tiny microcosm of her truly diverse portfolio. Many of her paintings, recently completed or still in progress, are displayed in her St. James studio - over 500 sq. ft. of exhibition space overlooking the ocean. Brock welcomes visitors to her gallery in Barbados, as well as the one located in Alderley Edge, UK. In November 2013. Brock's fascinating autobiography about her battle for survival and her success story of how she became an internationally renowned artist was published. The book, My Life On Canvas, contains an abundance of vibrant and thought provoking paintings from her life’s work - 1963 to present day. Mount Gay Rum is the oldest, most storied, most nuanced rum in the world. Our unique double – pot distillation process came to Barbados with the first merchant ships, the source of our rum’s distinctive aromatic character since 1703. Nelson Gay, an elegant six bedroom coral stone Palladian mansion, is located on the West Coast of Barbados in a lush tropical beachfront estate of nearly two acres. Nelson Gay’s garden opens straight onto a stunning half-mile beach. The clear, sheltered Caribbean Sea is roped off for safe swimming and is ideal for all water sports. There is also a coral reef for excellent snorkeling. Nelson Gay is just perfect for a totally relaxing and unforgettable holiday. British architect Barbara Hill designed the elegant mansion in the 1960s, under commission by US Ambassador Robert M. Scotten as his private residence. Inspired by a novel about life in the Winward Islands, Hill moved to Barbados in 1958, where she was a founding member of the local Institute of Architects and an active member of the Barbados National Trust. Nelson Gay, designed in the West Indian Colonial style, is considered one of Hill’s best works, ranking among one of Barbados’ finest homes. Most recently renovated under the direction of architect Brian Surfleet, Nelson Gay has maintained a timeless quality difficult to find in more recently built properties, expertly mixing classic Palladian architecture with modern amenities to create the ideal family holiday setting. The hall opens to the living room, featuring a 14’ ceiling with an intricate wrought iron chandelier and most impressively, an unobstructed view of the gardens, pool and Caribbean Sea just beyond. The South Wing of the home includes the kitchen, laundry room and formal dining room, a masterpiece within itself. Lit by candlelight only, the dining room provides a dramatic, intimate setting for evening parties. Featuring a glass-topped table designed by renowned designer Oliver Messel, complimented by French antique chairs and a selection of five different place settings, including Wedgewood, Rosenthal and Mikasa, the dining room accommodates up to 12 guests. There are five bedrooms in the main house, each decorated in a soothing palette of green and white, with high quality linens, chandelier lighting, billowing curtains and tiled flooring also designed by Messel. One bedroom is located in the South Wing; featuring his and hers en suite bathrooms with showers. The bedroom’s external doors fold back to reveal a charming private patio with sitting area and verdant foliage, ideal for a morning cup of tea or private relaxation. The North Wing houses the other four bedrooms, two of which comprise an impressively spacious Master Suite connected by a large en suite bathroom with shower; there is a second en suite bathroom in the suite as well. The Erté Mural Room features a queen-sized bed, en suite bathroom with bath/shower and access to a covered terrace opening on to the pool and gardens. The room has been aptly named due to the unique mermaid mural painted by the artist on the bedroom’s wall, where he stayed during his frequent visits to Nelson Gay. Born in St. Petersburg in 1892, Erté established himself in Paris as a fashion illustrator for Harper’s Bazaar magazine, for which he produced 250 covers over 22 years. Best remembered for the extravagant costumes and stage sets he designed for the Folles-Bergère, he is considered one of the foremost fashion and stage designers of the twentieth century. The fourth and final bedroom in the North Wing, the Green Room, features two single beds (which can be combined as a large king), en suite bath with shower, pool terrace access as well as a private patio opening on to the gardens. The North Wing also has a media room with a range of entertainment amenities, including a 55” flat screen television with surround sound, cable television and a library of over 400 DVD titles. There is also a day bed that can be used for additional single accommodation if necessary. As impressive as the interior living space is, Nelson Gay’s outdoor space is the true gem of the property. Complimented with lush green foliage and tropical flowers, residents will surely spend much of their time on the 60 ft. wide terrace, enjoying the environs. Said with a gracious smile, as I am led through the foyer of this magnificent villa on the island’s Platinum Coast. Italian in origin, the name “Aliseo” translates to mean “Tradewind” in English, and as its name suggests, this property is a breath of fresh air. This beautiful tropical villa, complete with 9 en-suite bedrooms capable of sleeping up to 18 persons, is ideal for the perfect family vacation. Situated high atop the picturesque Sandy Lane Estate, the property is run like an exclusive boutique hotel, and maintains extremely high standards on par with its elite location. A testament to this, on my arrival I am greeted by the gracious and un-assuming Butler of the property,

Edmund, otherwise known as “the man of business”. As is his duty to fulfill all requests by the patrons of Aliseo, all requests no matter how small are swiftly and efficiently dealt with, from organising a personal trainer to a yoga or pilates expert, or an in-house spa experience, encompassing the full spectrum of treatments, a cocktail party or customized island tour with picnic, Edmund goes above and beyond to ensure the satisfaction of his guests; he does it all with an easy grace, his sweet manner making life at Aliseo just that extra bit special. On my personal guided tour of the property, I encounter some of the most delightfully furnished rooms I have ever been given the grace to see. Every room is out-fitted with air conditioning, beautiful panel ceiling fans, en-suite bathrooms, walk in wardrobes and flat screen TV’s. Every room is unique in its design and layout, the décor has a very English Baroque feel to it with heavy drapery and ornate rugs co-existing alongside beautifully made mahogany and oak pieces. You almost begin to feel as though you are residing in an old castle by the seaside. However, there are distinctive touches which highlight the nature of its tropical location. The two-storey villa hones in on an old Bajan Plantation element that one cannot help but feel comfortable in; the upper level houses very tastefully designed bedrooms, all with arresting views of the manicured grounds. The “Bajan Suite” or Master Suite, has its own private terrace overlooking the stunning garden and swimming pool below. It is elegant and private with a beautiful 4 poster king size bed alongside gorgeous mahogany armoires and vanities, giving it that special old world Caribbean charm. The Ocean Suite and Monkey Suites are equipped with two twin beds fitted in crisp white linens and corresponding décor to match the themes suggested in the names, such as a monkey lamp and wall art, tropical fish dresser and light fixtures all with little jungle animal accents. These youthful artistic touches make these suites ideal for families with young children.
