For example, the elegant white pewter and iron balustrades that grace the magnificent spiral staircase and are found throughout the property have all been manufactured by Les Ateliers St. Jacques of Paris. The many beautifully curved and vaulted ceilings are made of traditional French ‘staff’, which is a very special mixture of plaster of paris and fibres that can form designs of any shape. In order to deliver the very highest quality, E. G. Deco of Monaco actually set up and operated a complete workshop inside the property for some two years. The impressive architecture of One Sandy Lane embraces traditional tropical features such as expansive verandahs, timber posts and the use of coral stone. The Barbadian coral stone, carved and shaped by local craftsmen, provides a complementary match for the superb quality Italian marble that is used throughout the building. French artisans have used natural pigments to make the paint, then applied it with a palette knife, adding as many as seven different layers of texture and tone. Contemporary Meets Island Living: a dance of space, form & nature

Challenging traditional norms and introducing modern architectural concepts has always been a test for any architect. A luxury condominium on Prospect Bay Beach in St. James, Barbados, manages to elegantly combine contradicting concepts: traditionalist British-Caribbean architecture of the island with sleek lines and open spaces, characteristic of modern design, as well as local landscape and natural materials with man-made ones, and to do so by having ultimate comfort in mind.

The beginning wasn’t easy, and it started by a quest of two Brits, Linda and Chris Salt, to find a home for themselves on the island of Barbados. They were looking for a house with the island’s spirit, but innovative, sleek architecture, and ultimate, modern-day comforts. After a long and frustrating search, this goal seemed impossible to achieve. The apartments and villas they visited on Barbados seemed to lack something – they were either too old-fashioned and “stuffy,” or a bit too overpowering with their bright Caribbean style. That was when they decided to commission a brand-new building themselves. Chris says: “The raison d’etre of the project was two-fold, firstly to create a super-home in a fantastic location for our own family to experience and enjoy, and secondly, given the increasing scarcity of prime beach-front land on the West Coast of Barbados, to provide an opportunity for other like-minded buyers/families to realize exactly the same dream in their very own apartments.” The next step was to find an architect who could share their vision. It had to be somebody with local Caribbean experience, but far-reaching, brave ideas. They needed an architect who wasn’t afraid to dream big, just as them. Then they came across Roldano Bellori, an Italian-born architect and the principal of boutique architectural firm, The Attic Ltd., famous as much for his daring blend of modern architecture that utilizes straight lines and favors open spaces, as for his respect of existing local traditional style, and always faithful to his passion for local landscape and natural materials. Finally, the dream started taking shape. Portico, which opened its doors last year, is ideally located on the west coast of Barbados, between Holetown and Bridgetown, and a short walk from the world-famous Four Seasons Development, synonymous with many celebrities. The building draws attention from the outside by its sleek glasscurtain wall, a part of the façade that is impressive but not too overpowering at the same time. Enter inside, and you will find yourself on a glass bridge above a reflecting pool, where water and stone organically merge with concrete and glass, replicating the surrounding outdoors in a contemporary way. “I have tried to combine local traditional architectural style with big spaces and sleek lines, and I

enjoyed playing with different materials, such as stone, wood, concrete and glass. But most importantly, I have attempted to create an open-spaced dwelling that includes the stunning landscape you see outside the window,” says the architect. Vast spaces throughout the building add to the feeling of untamed nature and modernistic architecture blended into one - including a five-storey open lobby, where the elevator stands out as an independent volume, yet integrated into the whole. Glass balustrades and bridges on each floor offer another level to the feeling of freedom one experiences inside the building by introducing a deeper dimension of invisible elegance. The stairs, a sculptural composition in steel and glass, adds drama

to the lobby, majestically connecting the floors. “The stairs became a piece of art I was looking to place in the vast space in the middle. I decided to play with characteristicfeatures of stairs usually find on boats, but I constructed them from lightmaterials, so that they blend in with the theme of the building, but playfully stand out at the same time.” This architect’s vision seems to have come to life in the apartments as well. When you open the sturdy cedarwood front door, you will immediately get a right-on-the-beach feeling, as floor-to-ceiling sliding stackable doors, imported from New Zealand, utilize paradise-like views to the maximum and make the turquoise Caribbean Sea an intrinsic part of the living room. natural materials imported from around from the globe, including Israel, Turkey, Italy and other parts of Europe, and combining them with ultimate comfort needs. Barbados has long held its position as the preferred getaway for travelers in the know. Although one of the smallest islands in the region, it has much more to offer than its neighbours, including excellent beaches, a friendly people and a wide range of hotels and amenities sure to please the most discerning guest. One of the islandʼs gems is The Lone Star Hotel & Restaurant. Constructed in the 1940ʼs by carenthusiast Romy Reid, The Lone Star originally served as the only commercial garage on the West Coast licensed to sell petrol. It now houses one of the islandʼs few but distinctive boutique hotels and an ultra-chic bar and restaurant, the quintessential hideaway for A-listers, seasoned travelers and those looking for an unpretentious yet luxurious Caribbean respite. Owned by Christian Roberts and his partner Edward Fairless, the Lone Star is a permanently buzzing institution for the islandʼs local and imported hipsters. Roberts is an English film and stage actor who starred opposite Sidney Poitier in To Sir with Love in 1967 and carried the lead in his own production of the stage musical Return to the Forbidden Planet at the Cambridge Theatre in 1989. The contemporary nautical décor has been expertly integrated with the Lone Starʼs historic architecture; the garageʼs original workshop serves as the reception area, while roman numerals on the kitchen floor mark the original repair pits. The coral stone air- raid shelter Reid built during WWII now houses the restaurantʼs extensive wine and champagne cellar.

Known locally as the place to see and be seen, The Lone Star Restaurant and Bar is one of the ʻinʼ places for eating out on the West Coast. Food critic Michael Winner has dubbed the eatery ʻthe Ivy of the Caribbeanʼ; judging by the array of A-listers regularly seen sipping champagne and rum cocktails at the polished mahogany bar, his opinion is well-warranted. Entering from reception, guests descend to the dining room via a large wooden staircase. With its highly polished floors, large white-clothed tables, blue and white ticked bucket seats, wire balustrade and large, sail-like awning, the Lone Star Restaurant almost feels like the deck of a large yacht. The idyllic views of the Caribbean Sea, especially at sunset, further enhance the distinctly nautical feel. The ultra-chic eatery has a breezy, casual atmosphere during the day, where the islandʼs local and imported hipsters converse over chilled white wine and oysters before taking a dip in the blue Caribbean waters, just steps from the open-air dining room. As evening falls, the Lone Star takes on an elegantly trendy atmosphere; the dress code is designer but not pretentious. As a throwback to the Lone Starʼs history as a garage, servers wear mechanicʼs overalls and baseball caps, enhancing the unique atmosphere. On quieter evenings, it can be romantic, however the Lone Starʼs cult following often has the restaurant and bar buzzing with music and the chatter of the island's regular winter visitors and its long list of resident celebrities. ʻDesperadosʼ, the bar opened in 2008, is named after the Western film Roberts starred alongside Jack Palance in the 1970ʼs. Featuring welcoming sofas and leather bar stools, it is often humming with the chatter accompanying pre-dinner champagne cocktails and caviar (Sevruga, Beluga and Osietra). The restaurant serves a delectable range of international cuisine with a Caribbean twist, prepared in the airy, open-plan kitchen by head chef Harold Skeete and his team. Chef specialties are prepared using freshly caught fish and local produce; dishes include tuna tartare, chicken tikka masala (Winnerʼs favourite), green Thai king-prawn curry and Caribbean fish pie, a favourite with the regular clientele.

THE HOTEL Well separated from the restaurant scene, the Lone Star suites define Caribbean cool, providing guests with a sophisticated yet comfortable retreat from sunny days and champagne-filled evenings. There are just four suites; reflecting the propertyʼs history, each is named in honour of an automobile legend: Cord, Studebaker, Lincoln and Buick. The rooms are large and airy with a refreshing décor

featuring dark polished Mahogany furnishings, crisp white bedding with touches of marine blue and ceiling to floor white muslin curtains. Each room features a king-sized bed, comfortable sitting area, tea and coffee service and complimentary mini-bar. The en suite bathrooms are definitively luxurious, with 5x5 ft. glass wall showers, double sinks, Philippe Starck fittings and inviting plush white towels and bathrobes. Each suite features a private verandah with uninterrupted views of the Caribbean Sea. The two lower suites open directly onto the powder white sand, while the upper suites offer a birdsʼ eye view of the relaxed beach setting below. Wire balustrades, sail-like awnings and inviting chaise lounges on the west-facing balconies enhance the nautical feel; shaded from the sun until late in the day, they provide the ideal setting for a rum sour

sundowner as the sea lights up with a palette of electric oranges and yellows. Though the views and relaxation are second to none, for guests wishing more technical entertainment each suite is fitted with an LCD flat screen TV, DVD and CD player, as well as complimentary WiFi access.

THE BEACH HOUSE VILLA The Lone Star also offers the ʻBeach House,ʼ a traditional coral stone villa furnished with the ownersʼ private collection of furniture and artwork, a contrast to the minimalist interiors of the hotelʼs four suites, providing an intimate atmosphere for guests looking for that proverbial home away from home. The Beach House Villa has a

The quiet and secluded atmosphere is ideal for sunbathing, reading an enticing holiday novel or taking a dip with the resident turtles. large, private sun deck and dining gazebo with direct access to the white sand beach below. The Villa can be rented in full or divided into smaller units; the two downstairs rooms, named ʻTropicalʼ and ʻMermaidʼ after the stunning murals on the bedroom walls, can be rented separately or together with a small adjacent den, whilst upstairs is the two-bedroom Penthouse Suite. There is an extensive library with everything from the classics to recent bestsellers, and the audio-visual room has a collection of DVDs. The bedrooms and their en suite bathrooms are filled with fresh flowers and scented candles. When rented in full, the villa offers additional service of its own staff, including two maids, a cook and a handyman.

THE BEACH While no beach in Barbados is private, at Lone Star you wonʼt find the throngs of tourists and beach vendors found elsewhere, but rather a choice of comfortable sun loungers and blue beach umbrellas nestled amongst the palm trees. Large silver gilt mirrors playfully lean against the trees, reflecting the glittering Caribbean Sea. The quiet and secluded atmosphere is ideal for sunbathing, reading an enticing holiday novel or taking a dip with the resident turtles. Swimming is excellent; the sea is typically calm and snorkeling equipment is available for guests wishing to explore the small reef just offshore. The Lone Starʼs cool, relaxed atmosphere feels worlds away from the hustle and bustle of the West Coast, yet is conveniently located near top amenities, including trendy boutiques, vibrant nightlife and world-renowned golf courses at the Sandy Lane and Royal Westmoreland Estates. H Holders House Polo Ridge, St. James

Just inland from the West Coast, Holders House boasts one of the island’s finest locations. To the east is the Green Monkey, Sandy Lane’s most exclusive golf course; to the west, the Holders Polo Club, the first club established in Barbados and one of the most prestigious in the Caribbean. Within minutes of Holetown’s fantastic range of amenities, Holders House is accessed by a tree-lined drive that leads to another world entirely. The main house has a wrap-around verandah with comfortable seating areas, a grand piano and views of the sea – an ideal location for watching the sunset with evening cocktail in hand. Home to the Kidd family for over forty years, the house is decorated with beautiful antiques, family photos and personal heirlooms reminiscent of the family’s interests, especially polo, a sport the family has helped develop into something of an institution on the island. Both Jack and Jodie Kidd are frequent participants in matches held at the polo club, where first-class international teams regularly compete. Each March the grounds play host to Holders Season, the Caribbean’s premier cultural event. The Barbados platinum west coast extends south

It was once said that the Barbados ‘Platinum West Coast’ commenced just south of Paynes Bay and ended just north of Holetown. This is certainly no longer the case following the emergence of a growing number of prestigious developments and businesses further south on the border region of St James and St Michael. This area is centrally located between Holetown and Bridgetown and only two miles from the fast-growing business community of Warren’s.

Probably best known and for a variety of reasons is the worldfamous Four Seasons Development at Clearwater Bay which is already showing clear signs of its much awaited reincarnation which undoubtedly the whole Island has been looking forward to for over two years now. The worldwide household names which have purchased villas at this development have been well documented and do not require repeating here but suffice it to say that the prestige and fame associated with them can only be good for the Island, particularly as these people are constantly under the world spotlight. The very fact that they are prepared to invest their millions in Barbados automatically gives a worldwide message that they are big fans of the island, particularly as these are people who can clearly afford to live anywhere in the world that they so choose. Another development in this area which has recently received worldwide acclaim is Portico on Prospect Beach. These salubrious apartments swept the board at the International Property Awards in San Diego, California, winning the classes of Best Architecture in the Caribbean, Best Development in the Caribbean, Best Apartment in the Caribbean and Americas and ultimately the prestigious Best Apartment in the World Award. When asked about choice of location for the project, Developer Chris Salt stated, “It really was a no brainer; we had been coming to Barbados regularly since 1986 and as a Brit the last thing we wanted when we went abroad was to be surrounded by large numbers of fellow Brits just as back home. We more enjoyed mixing with the

local people experiencing local culture and appreciated the change which was definitely as good as the rest. Staying in the Fitz Village/ Prospect area which we often did allowed us to do just this. In fact back in 2004 I did look at several other potential development sites in the busy and rapidly developing Paynes Bay/Holetown areas but never being one for following the crowd decided overwhelmingly on the Portico site as we believed there were many other people who would also prefer a quieter location but still on the West Coast,

which affords more privacy and dare I say it more exclusivity. We were accused back in 2004 of being five to ten years ahead of our time purely based upon location choice, which means if these people were correct then we should be the height of fashion anytime now!” The newly renamed Waves Hotel and Spa complex just two plots north of Portico has also recently enjoyed a multi-million dollar refurbishment and refit, now boasting four restaurants open to the public, two swimming pools and a first-class spa facility which rivals the best on the Island.
