THE IMPACT OF GIVING 2024

A WORD FROM THE CHAIRMAN AND HEADMASTER

THANK YOU FOR MAKING A THRIVING DIFFERENCE

We are pleased to share our 2024 Impact of Giving Report with you, highlighting the incredible generosity and commitment of our community throughout the year.

A highlight of the year was the completion of our Beyond Tomorrow fundraising campaign which exceeded the $10 million fundraising goal. This is a wonderful outcome and demonstrates that the culture of philanthropy is well and truly alive at BGS. We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who gave to the campaign which supported The Duigan Centre, our most ambitious building project in the School’s history. Your gifts will have a lasting impact as we continue to position BGS at the forefront of educational excellence.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank our Campaign Committee members. In particular, current parents Peter Morley, Scott Bull and Roger Shen for the key role they played in the campaign’s success.

Another highlight of the year was our 7th Annual Giving Day. Our generous community including; Old Boys, parents, staff, and sponsors, joined together as we focused on raising additional funds in support of The Duigan Centre. Over $300,000 was raised, far exceeding our

expectations and significantly boosting our campaign outcome. Thank you to our volunteers, donors, staff and boys who played a part in the success of our Giving Day.

There were countless other instances throughout the year where the generosity of our community truly shone. We are particularly grateful to Old Boy, the late Peter Fleming, for his generous bequest which was directed to the fundraising campaign supporting The Duigan Centre. The Peter Fleming Learning Lane, situated at the main

entrance of The Duigan Centre, serves as an enduring reminder of Peter’s generosity and his love of his School. This gift follows on from another significant bequest received last year from the estate of the late Rodney Bunning. Due to Rodney’s bequest, two boys are now attending BGS. His legacy will ensure that there will always be boys attending BGS on his scholarships - boys who otherwise would not be in a position to attend our School.

Finally, to our donors who chose to make BGS a philanthropic priority during the year, thank you again for your incredible support and dedication. Your generosity truly demonstrates that BGS’s culture of philanthropy continues to flourish. Together, we are building a legacy that will benefit our boys for generations to come.

IMPACTING THE LIVES OF OUR BOYS

It is with heartfelt gratitude that I present this year’s Impact of Giving report, outlining the impactful and generous contributions made by our incredible community throughout 2024. Your unwavering support in so many ways has been instrumental in advancing our mission and enriching the lives of our boys.

A key focus of the Development Office this year, and indeed for the previous four years, has been securing advocacy and support for The Duigan Centre – the most ambitious building project in our School’s history and one that will assist to position Brighton Grammar at the forefront of educational excellence well into the future. Remarkably, this project was delivered on time and on budget. I am also pleased to report, that through the amazing support of our community – Old Boys, past and current parents, staff and friends of the School - we were able to reach our $10M fundraising goal for the Centre. To the families who made The Duigan Centre a philanthropic priority over the past five years, a sincere thankyou.

Our Annual Giving Days have very much become part of our philanthropic calendar and our 7th Giving Day held in May was another most successful one. This year gifts raised on The Giving Day were directed to the Duigan Centre and with the support of our three matchers, TLC Health Care, VIVA Holidays and Oak Capital, all gifts received on the day were doubled. Thank you to our matchers and to the 532 donors who chose to support this year’s Giving Day. Together, we raised over $300,000

for the Centre in less than 24 hours – an amazing outcome and another indicator that philanthropy is alive and well at BGS. Scholarships open doors for talented and motivated students who otherwise would not have the opportunity to join our community and seeking support for our scholarship program was another priority for the year. Through the incredible generosity of two BGS families this year, we were able to offer two additional means tested scholarships. We look forward to welcoming the recipients of these scholarships to BGS next year, one entering Year 7 and the other entering Year 11. We also look forward to witnessing the unique contributions they will bring to Brighton Grammar School.

During the year, our Sequamur Society Manager, Nickie Warton, welcomed six new members into our bequest program, the Sequamur Society. This Society honours and thanks those members of our community who have chosen to include a gift to BGS in their Wills. I am delighted to report that membership of our Society has grown to 116 which is simply wonderful. This year, our Scholarship Fund and Building Fund have been strengthened significantly through the generosity of three members of our community who left gifts to BGS in their Wills.

The years ahead are going to be exciting ones and the philanthropic culture that has developed at BGS gives us the confidence

to know that together we will continue to build a brighter tomorrow for our boys.

I would like to conclude my report by thanking our generous donors for your dedication and commitment to our great School. It is because of you that Brighton Grammar continues to be a place where students can dream big and achieve great things.

DUIGAN CENTRE HARD HAT TOURS

Throughout the year, we had the pleasure of hosting many behind-thescenes hard hat tours of The Duigan Centre for our major donors.

Our donors were provided with an exclusive first look at the facility’s stateof-the-art design and purpose-built spaces, which are set to enhance the learning experience for our boys. In addition to a walkthrough of the spacious science labs on the entire first floor, each tour also included a visit to the creativity and innovation spaces on the ground floor where our budding entrepreneurs will be encouraged to experiment, collaborate, and bring their ideas to life. Another highlight of the tours was a visit to the three tennis courts on the roof, where many donors commented on the amazing views!

These hard hat tours served not only as a way to show our major donors the impact their gifts were making but also served as a testament to what can be achieved through the collective support of our community.

Coupled with the expertise of our teaching staff, we can’t wait to witness the positive impact The Duigan Centre will have on the educational experiences of our boys.

A sincere thanks again to our generous major donors for their ongoing support and involvement, which continue to make projects like The Duigan Centre possible.

DONOR WALL THANK YOU

As we close out our focused fundraising efforts for our Beyond Tomorrow Campaign supporting our Duigan Centre, I want to take a moment to sincerely thank those who supported this campaign. The generosity of the Brighton Grammar community in its entirety is remarkable. We appreciate each and every one of you for believing in our School.

A number of our community decided they wanted to recognise their support by way of a named panel, making an impressive installation in The Duigan Centre. The families represented through this initiative come from all segments of our generous community. Some of these strong community advocates are highlighted:

The Lees Family is a Junior School family whose youngest child is at Firbank. The Lees family has supported The Duigan Centre from the very beginning. They were keen to show their appreciation for the strong and supportive start their son made when beginning at BGS. They have become ongoing supporters of the School, with particular interest in our Beyond Tomorrow campaign through attending early site tours, advocating for the project and choosing to recognise part of their generosity through the naming of panel number 12.

David Johnson has remained an avid supporter of BGS for many years, not only through his own generosity but also through the ongoing support of On Track Sportwear sponsorship. David is an engaged member of our community and rarely misses a BGS Business Breakfast, he enjoys being part of our community and this explains his

motivation to support BGS on a personal level. Recognising David’s support of this campaign through a named panel was an obvious and small way for us to show our appreciation for his ongoing advocacy.

The Burnell Family has chosen to recognise the family’s Old Boy connections to Brighton Grammar, spanning over two generations, on the donor wall. Their connections to the School, however, run deeper. Andrew is a BGS Old Boy, a former BGS Staff member, and a member of the Court of Companions, which recognises long-serving staff members. His wife is a current BGS staff member and also a Court of Companions member. The Burnell family’s motivation for adding their name to the installation was to recognise their son Tom’s time at BGS.

CREATIVITY & DESIGN SCHOLARSHIP COMES TO LIFE

At Brighton Grammar we have a strong focus on integrating creativity, critical thinking and entrepreneurial endeavours into our traditional educational curriculum. We have a range of subjects on offer that tap into these skillsets and aim to prepare our boys for the evolving working world. These subjects have become popular among the students such as Food and Technology for Year 7-8s, Entrepreneurship in Year 9, industry and collaboration experience with our Artist In Residence program and many more.

Therefore, it came as a welcome suggestion to us when an Old Boy and his wife wanted to establish a Design and Creativity Scholarship. This conversation came at the perfect time as we open The Duigan Centre in 2025 allowing this new student to really capitalise on their interests. The Duigan Centre is designed, and purpose built for harnessing creativity, exploration, and budding entrepreneurial minds.

We are thrilled to welcome our first Design and Creativity Scholarship recipient in 2025 and know that he is eager to entrench himself in all that Brighton Grammar has to offer.

We thank our most generous family for their establishment of this scholarship and enabling this incredible opportunity to come to life. The impact of this scholarship is yet to be truly felt, however the generosity and chance for a nurturing education is not lost on our new family.

TRILOGY SCHOLARSHIP

Our means-tested scholarships continue to grow in number and we are pleased to announce the establishment of another scholarship this year.

The Trilogy Scholarship, made possible through the generosity of three members of a current BGS family, affords recipients the opportunity to grow and thrive in our community – an opportunity that may have not been possible otherwise. We would like to sincerely thank this family, who wish to remain anonymous, for establishing the Trilogy Scholarship and we look forward to welcoming the first recipient of this scholarship into Year 7 in 2025. This boy’s journey at BGS will serve as a testament to the life-changing nature of means tested scholarships whilst also enriching and inspiring members of the BGS community.

One aspect of the Trilogy Scholarship worth mentioning is its forward-thinking ethos encouraging recipients and their families, should they one day find themselves in a position to give back, to consider contributing to the BGS Scholarship Fund themselves. This pay-it-forward mindset ensures the legacy of means-tested scholarships can extend well into the future, creating opportunities for deserving boys for as long as the BGS doors remain open.

For more information on supporting scholarships or contributing to our BGS Scholarship Fund, please contact Eden Phillips in our Development Office.

SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT

IMPACT ON BOYS

Brighton Grammar School is fortunate to have the support of our 33 major School sponsors. Collectively, these sponsors enhance the journey for our boys in so many ways.

Some of our sponsors choose to support our Building Fund assisting us to provide our boys with the best possible facilities, others support our Scholarship Fund, and others offer in-kind support through the provision of goods and services required by the School. Regardless of where our sponsors’ contributions are directed, collectively they play a vital role in shaping our School community.

Many of our major sponsors are also in a position to offer our boys opportunities that would not come their way otherwise. One such example is outlined in the sponsor spotlight below.

Hunter Products - Sponsor spotlight

The Hunter Family’s connection to BGS spans over 35 years, beginning in 1989 when Jeff and Jan Hunter enrolled their eldest son, James (OB 1999), in Year 2. His younger brothers Luke (OB 2002) and Tim (OB 2003) soon followed, starting a long-standing journey with the School which is now being continued by the next generation, with Jeff and Jan’s grandsons joining our School community.

Recently, the Hunter Family chose to deepen their ties with BGS by becoming part of our sponsorship program through their thriving business, Hunter Products. This global company specialises in designing, developing, and manufacturing products ranging from toys and sporting goods to fitness equipment and aquatic accessories.

Since joining the program, the Hunters have enriched our boys’ experiences through educational opportunities, especially in the entrepreneurial space. A key example is their involvement in our Year 9 Entrepreneurship course, where boys have gained hands-on experience with real-world entrepreneurial projects, thanks to their support. This initiative has been so successful that it has now become a core component of the curriculum.

The Hunter Family’s sponsorship also extends to The Duigan Centre, where Jeff Hunter’s memory is honored through a naming opportunity in the Jeff Hunter Fab Lab. This state-of-theart space not only bears Jeff’s name but celebrates his remarkable achievements, with his story displayed prominently to inspire current and future BGS boys to pursue their own entrepreneurial dreams.

We extend our thanks to the Hunter Family for partnering with BGS through our sponsorship program. Their generosity, along with the support of all our sponsors, assists us to offer exceptional opportunities to our boys.

BGS boasts one of the largest schoolbased sponsorship programs in Australia, and the impact of this program is evident throughout our community. If you’re interested in learning more about how you can get involved, please contact John Phillips in our Development Office.

BGS VOLUNTEERS UNSUNG HEROS

Volunteers are the unsung heroes of many organisations and Brighton Grammar has an amazing network of volunteers.

The opportunities that are afforded to our boys due to the help and support of our volunteering community are exceptional. From the talented makeup artists at our school productions, our bbq crews, our events operators assistants, and support crews, we see your dedication.

So, it was only fitting that we could invite all our volunteers to gather and thank them for their commitment and passion to all areas of the School.

We certainly would not be able to achieve all that we do without our volunteers’ support – thank you!

Why I give to BGS

Ross Stewart (OB 1998) is incredibly supportive of the projects and initiatives we at Brighton Grammar School offer. We asked him to share with us his connection to BGS and what motivates him to be so invested in the outcomes we aim to deliver.

Tell us about your connection and involvement with BGS

My connection to BGS goes back a long way. My uncle was first at BGS in the 1970s and I am one of four boys who all subsequently went to BGS. My brother’s sons have all attended BGS, and my son is now moving into Year 5 having started in ELC.

From a work perspective, Scotia Engraving, our family business, has helped BGS with many projects and built several great relationships throughout the years. I’m also involved in the Junior Parents Group and help run the Family Fun Night which is a brilliant event for the boys and families in the Junior School.

What is your hope for the future of BGS and what impact will donor support have on these out-comes?

My hope for the future at BGS is for continuous growth within. Not necessarily in numbers but BGS continues to develop and provide new settings and opportunities for all boys who attend the school. I would love to see BGS stay as a one campus school. I believe this aspect is why there is a strong community feeling and why involvement between parents and their kids is so established. Donor support is super important for the School to continue to be able to build outstanding facilities and give amazing opportunities to all families, aiding their son’s growth and development.

TOGETHER WE’RE SHAPING THE FUTURE

THE SEQUAMUR SOCIETY LEGACY

It is truly remarkable to see what can be achieved when we connect our visionary Old Boys, parents and community supporters with the Brighton Grammar Sequamur Society. Through our Bequest program, we have received invaluable gifts that have not only been instrumental in shaping the School’s rich legacy but have played a pivotal role in shaping the BGS of today.

In 2024, we were thrilled to welcome six new members to the Sequamur Society, each making a profound commitment to support the School through a gift in their Will. From investing in scholarships that seed opportunity, to investing in our world-class learning facilities that help to grow potential in our future leaders, to funding our Positive Masculinity wellbeing programs, bequests of every size redefine what is possible for the next generations of BGS students.

We extend our deepest gratitude to all Sequamur Society members – those past, longstanding and new. Your commitment to us, your trust in our vision and your decision to leave a meaningful gift beyond your lifetime ensures that Brighton Grammar School can flourish for generations into the future.

Every generation leaves a legacy for the next. What’s yours? To have a confidential discussion on leaving a gift in your Will, no matter what stage you are at, please contact Nickie Warton, Bequest Manager on 03 8591 2274 or at nwarton@brightongrammar.vic.edu.au

TRANSFORMATIONAL GIVING

LEARNING LANE TO HONOUR THE LATE PETER FLEMING (OB 1955)

Brighton Grammar School celebrates the wonderful life and memory of the late Peter Fleming. Peter’s love of his school and philanthropic generosity has greatly contributed to the development of our new Learning Centre through a bequest to the BGS Building Fund. We are delighted to name the Centre’s Learning Lane in honour of Peter’s legacy.

A well-loved Brighton community member, Peter is remembered as a great conversationalist who always had time for people, and for his genuine kindness. He was part of a large Anglican Parish family who moved to Bayside in the late 1930s. Along with his parents, Walter and Mary Fleming, Peter was very involved in the Brighton Grammar and St Andrew’s Church communities.

In his school years, Peter was a shy student but loved being a part of school life. In 1949, he joined the School Cadet program which, for a shy boy, turned out to be the form of much amusement for his family. The program would help him to build confidence through resilience, camaraderie and determination…all qualities that capture the enduring spirit of our BGS Old Boys.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Peter worked in the finance sector following school. He had a true passion for tennis, attending Wimbledon on his travels to the UK, and could regularly be found on the St Andrew’s Tennis Club courts. Peter also loved art and design and never strayed far from his life-long devotion to the St Kilda Football Club.

Kindness, community and generosity were values that guided Peter through life. Following his passing in 2023 at the age of 85, Peter left donations to nine charitable organisations… standing testament to his belief in giving back to community and creating positive impact for all.

His gift to Brighton Grammar builds on our School’s rich heritage by supporting the continued development of our exceptional learning facilities… helping to shape the Brighton Grammar School of tomorrow.

It is his family’s hope that our boys will look up to the Peter Fleming Learning Lane and remember the profound difference one individual can make in the lives of many. Brighton Grammar School is proud to have held a special place in Peter’s heart and it is therefore a fitting tribute that we celebrate his life and legacy.

Peter’s story - and the school he loved – lives on.

Recognising our donors in 2024

Thank you to all our donors. You make a significant difference to what we can achieve at BGS. Whether contributing to scholarships, buildings or other programs, your support shapes and enhances the educational opportunities for our current and future boys.

2024 SPONSORS

2025 AND BEYOND

Brighton Grammar School’s philanthropic priorities focus on two main goals that support the School’s commitment to provide an outstanding education for boys.

Providing exceptional teaching and learning environments for our students to thrive and pursue their passions.

Working to ensure a financially stable future for our community by growing our endowed funds.

Supporting an initiative that is important to your family can create an impact felt in ripples, some of those reaching many you may never know. A gift to one of our tax-deductible funds creates opportunities for our boys, their families and future families.

We think our supporters are amazing and welcome a discussion at any time, should you wish to see how you can make a positive impact with a gift.

If you would like to make a tax-deductible gift to either the BGS Building Fund, BGS Library Fund or the BGS Scholarship Fund, please contact Eden Phillips in the Advancement Office (03) 8591 2231 or email ephillips@brightongrammar.vic.edu.au
